Cobra – Top MGS Rankings 5 Years Straight

How long have you been a reader of MyGolfSpy?  Well if the answer was more then a few months then you’re probably aware that MGS is quite fond of Cobra’s golf equipment.  Why is MGS so fond of Cobra?  Well every single year for the past 5 years I have tested their drivers & irons and they have ranked in my Top 3 for best gear every one of those years.  This is a 5-Year stretch we’re talking about…not just 1-2 years which in it self would be impressive but 5 years in a row.  No other golf company can claim that in my eyes…and I mean none of them.

Cobra – No Longer Anyone’s Baby Brother

But yet people still don’t flock to them when in the market for a driver or set of players clubs.  Not many golfers think of Cobra when they think “Players Club”.  Why is that?  Well one reason is because…they were always Titleist’s little baby brother…the one no one took serious in the local backyard brawl or game of tackle football.  Well…that is until that little brother grew up and some of those older friends realized he could kick their asses now.  And that’s just what I hope happens for Cobra now that they’re on their own.  The guys over at Cobra/Titleist which is now Cobra/Puma deserve it. They deserve it for many reasons that I won’t go into…would most likely bore the hell out of you.  But one important reason is because they are and have been what I feel is the most underrated golf company in the industry when it comes to not only making great equipment but having some of the best employees and management in the biz and I respect that.  Hell anyone should be able to respect that.  From top to bottom they have a class-act group of guys.

MGS Readers Shocked By Results

We got a lot of emails this year from shocked readers when the Cobra S2 driver finished in 1st Place in our “Clash Of The Adjustable Drivers!” – LONGEST DRIVER AWARDS and then even more when their Cobra S2 and Cobra ZL finished both 1st and 2nd in our “Clash Of The Adjustable Drivers!” – USER’S CHOICE AWARDS!.  Might have shocked the readers but I could almost have predicted those results.  We have another in depth review coming of “The Best Forged Cavity Iron in 2010” coming soon as well and I won’t be surprised if they perform near the top in that review as well.

2011 Cobra S3 & S3 Pro Irons

A couple of my favorite modern forged irons are the original Cobra PRO MB’s and Pro CB’s…in my mind they are true classics that will stand the test of time performance wise.  So I was happy to see that they didn’t stray too far with the new 2011 Cobra Pro line-up of irons.  Now the new standard 2011 Cobra S3 game-improvement irons might not be my cup of tea in regards to looks but their aren’t many game improvement sticks out there nowadays that are…the new GI irons of today are just a little much for me…but I understand in this business that you have to have a line that appeals to more then 1 group of golfers if you’re going to stay afloat.

“Players Clubs” aren’t where most these companies make their big bread.  The GI market seems to be drawn to crazy decals and color schemes…the crazier they are the more eyes that latch on to them when they are walking through their local proshop…it’s a growing trend. And one I don’t see fading for years to come.  And honestly no matter how it looks if we test it and it out performs what I am currently playing then it goes in the bag…simple as that.  So we won’t knock it until we try it.

We gave you a sneak-peek at Cobra’s New S3 Driver back in August…and now we wanted to show you the spy pics we have of their new irons for 2011.  So let us and the guys over at Cobra now what you think…

These Irons are very solid. They are very close to the older pro mb and cb. I have a set currently and they are a combo set. The mb’s have a tad bigger sole than the older pro mb’s but it was good change… I prefer the new mb’s. The CB’s look identical to the old ones besides the head is a tad bit smaller but the sole is the same. And of Course as you can tell they have a nice satin finish to them which sets up nice to a players eye. I have hit a lot of different irons out there, right out of the tour van but nothing compares to these irons great appearance, best feel, and easy to shape shots.

The S2 is much more pleasing to the eye……whydo they think they have to make such drastic, ugly changes?

I have just contacted cobra golf to try to replace a sz 4iron only to be told it is no longer in stock and can’t be replaced .the club is only last years model I think this is shocking I think that if cobra are now out on their own they should look at customer care . If a club only one year out of date can’t be replaced then I would be tempted to looc at companies that can look after their customers!

Actually the S3 Pro’s are going to be a combo set the cb’s in 3-6 iron and mb’s in 7 – PW, told this through a sales rep

that’s good for me, but maybe not players who want a pure muscle back down to their 3 or 4

When the guy said Tiger played Cobra he meant Cobra Driver. He played a Deep Face Prototype Cobra driver along with his Titleist irons.

These look great from the back but all of Cobras recent “player” irons do. I have never liked the way they actually set up. It seems there is always something a bit off with their player irons (too much offset, thick top-line, weird hosel/blade transition, etc…)
I would for sure play their stuff, hopefully they got these right.

Cobra has done an excellent job in the past few years of design. The 2011’s don’t look all that differently from the Pro MB’s and Pro CB’s of the past. However, a great iron. We had a demo day at my club and I was trying out the CB’s. For kicks I thought I can’t hit it but I just want to try that MB. Viola…….I hit it almost as well as the MB? Whod a thought!!

I’m a big fan of Cobra drivers, fairways and hybrids…but their irons suck, and these look no better!

The MB is a good looking iron, solid and purposeful. Minimum of flair, which appeals to my eye.
Looks like Cobra is headed in the right direction. Their drivers, especially the ZL are some of the best looking drivers on the market. The ZL is the first Cobra club I’ve wanted to possess more than any other brands driver. The MB and CB look worthy of the same desire.

In the beginning Tiger played Titleist 681 irons. That is what Nike copied when he signed on with them

Cobra is a wonderful company…. except for two major parts of their clubs; their irons and their hybrids. This irons arw no exception, they aren’t very appealing.

The S3 is a littel over the top, but really only the graphics, I suspect its a club that would look better if it were toned down a bit, I can say I really like the finish.

The CBs and MBs look good! My first set of irons were the Cobra Gravity Backs, so I’ve always had a certain fondness for Cobra clubs. Might be time to look into them again, can’t wait to see how they perform in the forged iron review!

I actually like the look of the S3, but wonder how it would look after banging around in the bag for 6 months. I’m thinking of getting out of the GI irons next year though and I’m definitely keeping my eye on the Cobra lineup. Can’t wait till you can review these thoroughly!

Puma is keeping some of the old styling but adding their own touch…I like. Please be available in lefty!

I was told by a Cobra rep back in February to hold off until 2011 to buy anymore Cobra stuff. Good thing I did!

Puma has no role in their club design. They are more like Titleist/FootJoy in regards to clubs/apparel.

those irons look extremely good !!!!! especially the blades… And i agree about the text above, Cobra has been one of my favorite golf companies not just because they sell stuff that looks good, but also stuff that outperforms a lot of products coming from highly known companies.

I also agree it’s time they get the respect due .RememberTIGER did play cobra in the beginning.

The S3 irons I have mixed feelings, the forged cb and mb are not much in change.Thats OK but the 011 S3 at least not a knock off of the callway look but more to some of the Ping medallion button look.Ay least the medallion should have the snake logo on it not the S3.
The Cobra has a mystic of deadly power ,feared by all who use it!!! I like a thinner top line and no more cheap plastic parts to save cost. I was in hope that the look would be striking different . Swap the S3 with the Snake logo on the heads!!!! If I wanted a medallion on the club head that onlty changes each new year I would by PING.
Step up and and stand out!!
My first set of clubs were cobra.
I use the ZL driver and it’s the best yet!!!

i totally agree with you about cobra. great gear for years, the old stuff didn’t look any good but it out performed almost everything. im really looking forward to trying their new forged offering. i had the old mb’s and they were fantastic. i heard from our rep that it was going to be a split combo set and not mb and cb sets? not sure if you heard different. either way well done again cobra
