2011 Ping Anser Forged Wedge

Wanted to say thanks to David Dusek for sending out the image of a new wedge Ping he is currently testing out.  We had heard that Hunter Mahan was testing a new prototype wedge out this past week at the Wells Fargo tournament.  We spoke to a source this morning that confirmed that news and also gave us a little more info about the wedge.  Here is what we have so far of this new 2011 Ping Asner Forged Wedge Prototype.

  • Hunter Mahan tested it out at Wells Fargo Tournament
  • More staff players will be testing it out in the weeks to come
  • If you notice towards to toe you will see a Tungsten insert which our source says is to create more stability
  • Right now this wedge will compliment the current Ping Forged Anser irons and they do not have plans to bring a full set of irons like these to retail
  • These wedges will most likely be available at retail in the summer

Reader Feedback

Ping’s golf club designs never really have conformed to the typical standards of the industry when it comes to the looks category.  But when it comes to performance their almost always top-notch.  Ping is also not known as well for their wedges as let’s say a Cleveland or Titleist to the average golfer.  So…not matter whether you are a Ping guy or not…what are your initial thoughts on this new prototype wedge being tested by Ping? You going to give this a swing if it comes to retail?  Let’s hear whatcha got to say!

Actually, the heads are manufactured in China, but I beleive they clubs are assembled in the US.

Can’t say that I like the look of the cavities on the back, they no doubt serve a purpose but I don’t like the look.

I love the Ansers, never thought I would be playing a blade. So I am thinking I am going to have to hit the wedge. Ping has never been my pick, but now that I have the Anser in my bag. Thinking may have been over looking some great golf clubs in the past?

Looks OK to me. I’ve never liked iron heads with adhesive medallions, logos and such stuck on them. Hard to say anything comprehensive without seeing it in the playing position.

I’m a scratch player and have played Ping irons since 1982. Purchased the Anser irons a few months ago and they are the best Ping irons that I have ever hit. Great feel and ball flight. If the new wedge is anything like the set, you will like it. I am very disappointed that Ping doesn’t produce much in the USA anymore. It was always great to see the USA stamp on the back of the irons.

Stunning wedge, I am hanging onto my non-conforming Vokeys until they become toothless but I have liked the look of Ping Wedges for a while and these look even better. Much cleaner looking too which was part of the reason people avoided them in the past IMO.

I love PING, but they fail at wedges for me because they don’t make grind/bounce combinations that work for my game. Not everyone needs 12* bounce on a gap wedge. Some people like C grinds on their sand wedges. I’m sure they’re nice if they work for your game, but the focus seems too narrow. The cavity design doesn’t do anything for me either.

Like the looks from the back. I wonder if these will be a little higher quality than the irons they have been putting out, lately. I have seen a few of the S-56’s that have had face plating failures. The plating looks like it breaks loose and starts to climb up the grooves. At first glance, it looks like a rock ding. When you get an upclose look, the ding is actually a wad of plating.
Like that PING is starting to work towards a style that fits a more general population’s desires. Would love to see them back in a high ranking, like the good ole days.
Just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt,

Hot! Really clean looking with a real Ping performance kind of thing going on.
