SPY PIC! – 2013 Cobra Amp Cell Driver

Cobra Amp Cell Driver

When you see trademarks with names like SmartPad and MyFly…what comes to mind?  Maybe a new Apple product release…or how about a prototype Nike shoe.  Well, both would have been a good guess…that is before Cobra went all bad-ass and rogue on the golf equipment world.   Yeah you guessed it (actually you didn’t) but those are both Cobra-Puma Golf trademarks that were filed.  And at least one of them is on display in the “spy pic” we got for you today.  It’s called the COBRA AMP CELL DRIVER.

Details

I have been saying this for years now and the trend just seems to continue to grow in the industry.  The trend I am referring to is “Customization & Personalization”.  And it’s not only here to stay but it will continue to grow over the coming years.  You saw Callaway do it with the uDesign and now Cobra is the next to offer the golf consumer a choice when it comes to what color they want to play in their driver.  In the new Cobra Amp Cell driver you will be able to choose from the following 4 colors on your head:

:: Silver
:: Orange
:: Red
:: Blue

Couple other things you might want to know about the Cobra Amp Cell driver is that it will be available in 460cc and a tour version at 440cc.  The stock shaft will be a Fujikara Fuel shaft, and the loft will be adjustable from 8.5 to 11.5 without affecting the face angle.  Soon as we get more info and pictures we will be sure to update this post.

YOUR THOUGHTS?

What are your thoughts on the Cobra-Puma brand since leaving the Titleist umbrella?  You like what they are doing…or wish they had stayed the way they were?  How do you like the color option offered on the new Cobra Amp Cell driver?  Got any first impressions on the look of their newest stick? Let ’em know!

      I own AMP driver (9.5, Hard) , and love it for its distance, forgiveness, and most straight ball I can hit with this.
      Never go under 240 yds with my clubhead speed (102-107mph). Average would be 250-255yds.
      Sometimes hit relatively high ball, so I would rather have lower loft angle in somewhat gusty condition.
      This sounds perfect for me. Can’t wait testing!!

      I have always used the off-set… and, will probably buy the new Cobra driver. However, I wish Cobra would make some off-set fairway woods. I do not care much for the adjust option such as open, closed and standard ….. Just give me a good old off-set 3 wood with an Aldila M speed shaft and I am good to go.

      when will people realize all this technology is bad for the game and bad for your wallet. this is so stupid. its a business. every year they need to come up with something new to sell us. let’s go back 30 years: butter knife irons and wood woods :) since we all have access to the same technology, all we are doing is running up the cost on ourselves. dumb. dumb. dumb.

      I have to disagree terry. Tour pros have had there clubs altered for them for years now. Now companys can give us amatures the same options as the guys on tour. It allows us to maximize the performance of their product. Why wouldnt they want us to fully enjoy the product. Thats the nature of any company. Thats like saying the auto industry is screwing us for making cars that get more mpg and offering more saftey features. should we all be driving a model T? nobody is making you buy the new clubs. Why not let a company push the limits and develop new products that will help the weekend hacker actually enjoy the game we all love. I know I would have alot more fun playing 4 hr rounds then watching a guy struggle in front of me play some 15 year old clubs and hitting it all over the map.

      I have not gotten to hit the one the Cobra rep left at my club but what I noticed was that the loft adjustment also had a couple of draw settings (10.5 and 11 if I remember correctly) for for those of us with less than perfect swings. The demo was in white with the stiff flex and looked pretty good.

      Cobra took my handicap from 13 to 1. I played around with other irons and drivers thinking there was something better. I played the S2 driver B4 I got “fitted” for a 910. I sold my 910 D2 and went to a Nike VR driver. I now play S3 Pro irons and Volkey wedges. Play my old Ping putter after I got mad broke and sold my Scotty putter (after a 4 putt). I wear callaway shirts (cheap), FJ shoes and Srixon VX balls. I’m a 1.7 now and playing the best golf of my life. There is no perfect brand. Just use each club that works best for you. Cobra is as good as any.

      I think if Cobra stayed under the Titleist umbrella they would have followed the path of Foot Joy…eroding market share. I think all in all consumers like to see manufacturers take the initiative and be pro active instead of reactive. I’ve seen all 4 drivers and hit one and it was sweet. The shaft was pretty tight in the tip and the loft changes were visible in flight. The face angle looked square in every loft except for maybe the 11.5* (could’ve looked 1/2* closed?). I think Cobra is gonna kill it with this one.

      I purchased the AMP tthis year after the RBZ and R11s, my drives are just as long if not longer and more consistent. If the new drivers are as good, I am in. The color choice is just icing in the cake but I approve of choice. I would like to have a face adjustment though.

      lol @ Brian, who is the parent company of say TM? Can you sit down for this answer: Addidas where have you been under a rock? Seriously, all top brands have a clothing line Cobra is not the first. I have just switched all my gear over to Cobra because I can drive the AMP 300 yards straight on a great day and am averaging 270 normally so if that is garbage call me Oscar the Cobra playing grouch.

      It’s nice to be able to make adjustments to the head to change the desired loft. Now when they come up with truly new technology to change the color of the head on the fly will I really be impressed.

      Personally I think that Titleist sold on Cobra to Puma because it wanted to widen the perception that its brand was on a much higher plain than the Cobra brand and was the preferred brand for better amateurs and many tour professionals.

      Personally again, I think that really serious golfers prefer their drivers to be black or even white and shy away for garish graphics including hiding shaft graphics on the underside of the shaft on both woods and irons.I certainly do.

      Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Rickie Fowler have his 1st PGA Tour win using the Amp Driver this season?

      Anyway, I’m a fan of what these guys are doing. it’s something different. Loft adjustability sounds incredible especially if they’ve managed to not affect face angle. Not sure how this is possible though.

      I don’t really care about color options. I’m not against a funky color, but I’m not going to pay more for it. I don’t like the grey looking section on the sole of the club. It looks like cheap plastic in the picture. I suspect it can’t look that bad in person though. I’m really curious how they accomplish the loft change without affecting the face angle.

      Brian,

      Rickie actually had his first PGA Tour tournament victory with Cobra Puma clubs. Granted he hasn’t played well in the latter half of the season, I would hardly compare him to Vilegas. As for trusting your game to Cobra, why do you think they are inferior? If any golf company is an apparel company, it is Nike. Mark my words, your 8 year old callaway clubs are the cause of your 7 handicap not improving any.

      I remember when Cobra first came out. It was the best thing out there. Everyone wanted the Cobra Driver. But then there was that issue with the clubs being copied and fakes made them go off the chart. The Cobra Amp looks cool and I hope it is really awesome. I need a new driver anyways. Besides, I am a sucker for wild colors. Thanks for the info.

We’ll see if this new driver changes things for Fowler. All I know is I would NEVER trust my golf game to some apparel company. Did I say NEVER? The trusty rusty was a neat concept and even a nice looking wedge but I have never seen anyone bag one.

So i certainly wouldnt compare him to Camillo switching to his TM junk. Not sure what you have in the bag but if its titleist and I would assume by your comments it is…. check who owns them now. So Brian you might want to check what you have in your bag…The Clubs you may have are made by another clothing company so i would not talk about Cobra…until you know your facts. I hope that this sells better than the AMP…I really do, because Cobra is pushing the envelope & I like to see companies/people rewarded when they take risks and dare to be different…Though it’s gotta be a type of difference that people will pay for…They’ve gotta be a little nervous at having the AMP available presently for $179.00 a year before most of their competitors’ drivers will hit that price range…That’s a whole lotta dollars lost on the sales side & profit side of the business…

      We’ll see….

      Im not a big fan of the different color schemes, or adjustability for that matter, but I do like the direction that Cobra is going. They are being very innovative in their product lines and really thinking outside of the box (I think we all know they did the white driver first). I am included in the crowd that thinks drivers don’t have much room to grow or change going forward, but I won’t be upset when Cobra proves me wrong.

      Looks kind of cool. Like the color choice and as far as adjustability, once set up correctly, I don’t change much. Advantages being that as golfers get older, you can adjust the driver to fit your evolving swing.

      This sounds pretty cool, but there are always tradeoffs for adjustability, so I’m curious how this will be done. 8.5 – 11.5 is a huge range without affecting face angle.

      Love that they’re offering different colors too, hopefully they don’t screw it up like Callaway and charge a fortune for it.

      Our Cobra rep brought these us and the first thing i thought of when I saw them was that the line looks like an assortment of lolly pops.. I’m not a huge fan of all the different colors, but what I am a fan of is their hosel. They will be offering “Blue Stiff” instead of 11.5 Stiff or 10.5 stiff. Like you said in the write-up, they range from 8.5 – 11.5 so they do not need to offer certain lofts. They also are using a window to tell you the loft on the hosel rather than a +1, -1 system. Now does the technology work? I don’t know because we weren’t able to hit them. I will post on here when we are able to though!!

      As long as it helps me hit it farther than my buddy’s neon green RKT BLZ driver, I’d be an ecstatic golfer! But does color choice translate into farther drives or just an easy way for Puma to sell some clothes’ colors other than orange?
