First Look: 2013 Odyssey Versa Putter

What’s in the Box?  Tell Me What’s in the Box!

Ah Seven, the movie where I learned that my wife and I may not have the same taste in movies.  Be that as it may, “What’s in the Box?” was exactly what came to mind today after an unexpected white box came from Odyssey today.  I am expecting some boxes from Callaway and Odyssey, but this one was a surprise.  Those of you who follow me on Twitter (@Golfspy_Dave) saw the initial photo earlier today.  I am sorry for being such a tease, but life got busy right after I took that photo.  So let’s wait no longer and look in that box!

Look at that!  It’s a putter!  My lovely wife was not impressed that another putter had arrived, but I was enthralled.  But, what’s in the Box, Dave?  Stop digressing and TELL ME WHAT’S IN THE BOX!  OK, OK.  As I said, its a new Versa putter from Odyssey.  It’s not a new head style, it’s a classic #1 head.  However, it is a huge deviation from Odyssey’s alignment system.  While other putters use lines perpendicular to the face to aim, the Versa has a line parallel to the face, which Odyssey says helps you to square the face to target.  Check out these graphics from the box:

I spent about 20 minutes with the Versa #1 on the putting green today, and in terms of alignment, there may be something to the Versa.  As you hold it at address and slowly rotate it clockwise and counter-clockwise you can definitely tell when it is at that squared up position.  Getting it back to square will still depend upon your stroke, but perhaps the Versa alignment system will help golfers in 2013 to at least start out square to target.  Regardless, I commend Odyssey for taking a chance with the Versa.  Something this far from the norm could definitely rub some traditionally minded golfers the wrong way, that is until they start dropping putts with it.  Anyway, here are some shots of the putter and also a shot of the letter that came in the box.

What do you think about the Versa?  Is it too far out there?  If it works, will golfers get over its unconventional looks?  Who will be the first pro to bag it in 2013?

I got the #1 black-white-black on their second day in the stores. I love it. I used to play with the two-ball and with the versa I don’t seem to focus on lining it up as much. It feels real smooth as I release through the putt.

I just read about the Mizuma putter that uses the white top line on their new putter, so who is copying who?

Seems like a good idea. It’s different, but except for the top of the club, fairly traditional. Heck it looks tame compared to the White Ice Sabertooth I use. (It works great!)

This will be like the orginal two ball. Individuals put their own perpendicular line thru the two circles until Oddesey got the hint. Same will happen here

I’ve seen some 2-Balls ruined by guys with Sharpies going to town with the alignment aid! I think having a perpendicular alignment aid might actual deter from the process, a dot is probably more suitable.

I am willing to try it, and hope they have a no-offset heel version

The putter looks good and I’ll definitely give it a try at the store. I’ll probably keep the Odyssey two ball putter I’m currently using. Hopefully the offer an option with a milled face as I’m not a fan of the face inserts.

I’m set for my putter but I like the look and the idea behind it. Well done Cally.

Tried all the Versa models 10 days ago. Good concept, the alignment aids actually work. The whole putter is one huge alignment aid :) The #7 is exciting. Odyssey were excited about it too. Lots of cool stuff they can do with colors, lines and dots on that head. Don’t remember all the models, but the one that has a “squareback” shape was excellent for me. Slight toe hang and nice weight.

They come in white/black/white and black/white/black. Don’t remember which did what, but one works best for those who struggle with aiming at address and one works better for players who struggle squaring it up through the stroke.

I think the Versa is a result of Callaways new image. They’re giving us products that previously would’ve ended up as just crazy ideas. Definitely Chip Brewers influence we’re seeing now.

For people that can aim with no perpendicular line this might be nice. For the rest of us, it’s probably a miss. A shame, too, because the fix would have been as simple as a hash mark or 2 on the black portion of the flange.

I like the design, but they should have at least identified the sweet spot when looking down. I need that visual and won’t buy anything without it. I’m sure that will be in the 2014 version :-(

From reading about how each individual is unique in which alignment markings help them best align the putter face to the target, I think it is great to see another choice in the marketplace. I don’t find the putter ugly or difficult to look down on at address, so I’m speculating that this will see some good success in the marketplace.

I like it and can’t wait to try it! Any word from Odyssey on additional models of Versa?
