FIRST LOOK – Cobra BiO Cell and BiO Cell +
“We take on anybody else’s club head to head, and more often not, we think we’re going to win” – Every Golf Company

Seriously, I’ve heard some variation of that statement from just about every golf company I’ve ever spoken with. Woods or irons, it doesn’t matter; everybody is all but certain their creations are the best.

It’s a belief that’s next to impossible to prove or disprove.

Everything fits somebody, and what fits my 107 MPH, negative angle of attack, angry chop of a swing may not fit your graceful, controlled, 3 degrees up swing.

What I’ve come to believe is that once you get past all of the tech speak, and the marketing, and all of that ancillary ‘stuff’, what really separates the companies on top of the golf world from those climbing to get there is simply a matter of discussion.

TaylorMade, Callaway, Titliest… for a majority of golfers, these companies are in the discussion. When golfers are thinking about where to spend money on drivers, and fairways, and wedges, and whatever else; these are the companies throw around when they have those mental conversations with themselves over what to buy next.

What does any of this have to do with Cobra and BiO Cell?

Bear with me…as always, I’m going somewhere with this…and by now you should know it sometimes takes me a while to get there.

Here’s my point. Cobra wants in the discussion. Whether theirs is the first club in, or the 3rd club in the bay behind TaylorMade and Callaway, all Cobra really wants is to be in the discussion.

If you’re in the discussion, you get the chance to compete, and yeah, you betcha, Cobra’s no different than anybody else:

If you give Cobra the chance to compete, they think they’re going to win.

So with all of that said (and none of it about BiO Cell yet), I want you to ask yourself this question:

Do I like what I hear? Do I like what I see? Does this package of products put Cobra in the discussion?

If it doesn’t, I’d be interested to hear why it doesn’t…and I’m certain the team at Cobra would be as well.

BiO Cell Driver

As you can probably piece together all on your own, BiO Cell is the direct replacement for last season’s AMP Cell driver.

As you might expect, there are some subtle performance tweaks. Cobra thinned out the crown just a bit which allowed them to move the center of gravity lower. The result is a driver that launches a bit higher, and spins less (~300 RPM) than AMP Cell.

As with AMP Cell, Cobra is using their MyFly technology (updated to MyFly8) to allow for the entire range of lofts to be reached in a single head. The new hosel allows for BiO Cell to be configured from 9.0 degrees to 12 degrees in 1 degree increments. In addition to the 10.5 draw setting from last year, this year’s model adds draw settings at 9.5 and 11.5 degrees. In case you haven’t pieced it together, that’s 8 unique settings.

While Cobra would like to keep the discussion focused on performance, most of you will no doubt notice that Cobra has added a semi-traditional black option to the color lineup.

 Technology that Shows

We’ve talked in the past about how a segment of golfers really likes to see the technology that’s baked into their clubs. For the right audience, visible technology can be tremendously appealing.

With that in mind, it makes perfect sense that Cobra would show off the crown’s cell structure on the rear of the crown. Even if golfers don’t know what it is, or what it does, it looks cool. In a $299, it makes perfect sense.

And that brings me to…

BiO Cell+

I’ve said it before, while golf companies will tell you that everything they make is special. They won’t say it out loud, but they also believe that some products are more special than others.

I think it’s fair to say that in my admittedly limited time covering golf, I’ve never seen Cobra more excited about any single product than they are about BiO Cell+ driver.

While the name suggests it’s an extension of the AMP family, the 440cc BiO Cell+ is actually more ZL than AMP- and I think that’s going to make a lot of Cobra fans excited too.

While the R&D that went into BiO Cell+ was extensive, the Cliff Notes version of BiO Cell+ performance reads like this:

Through the use of an alloy they call Venollum, Cobra was able to further reduce crown weight (compared to Bio Cell), which produces a lower launch angle (nearly a degree) and less spin (+/- 200RPM) than the standard BiO Cell model.

Because Cobra was able to place the CG closer to the neutral axis, and farther back than some competitor’s products, they were able to achieve the desired launch conditions, without the MOI sacrifice of TaylorMade’s SLDR for example.

With BiO Cell+, Cobra is telling us that you don’t have to give up forgiveness for distance.

IMG_3846

Questionable Aesthetics

Unfortunately they’re also telling us that we’re going to need to be comfortable looking at a less than traditional crown design. In the interest of visible technology, I suppose, Cobra has chosen to surround their colorful (or black) Venollum crown-piece with a high gloss white perimeter.

Cobra’s known for being bold, and to an extent taking risks with their designs…or at least their use of color, but my gut tells me they may have misjudged their target demographic’s receptiveness to bold aesthetics and visible technology.

The design is over the top to the extent that I believe it’s going to have a polarizing effect on their potential market. When you’re already in the discussion, you can get away with that, but when you’re grinding to be part of the conversation, alienating any percentage of the market is risky.

My 2 cents here…I don’t love it. I don’t hate it, and no doubt if the driver performs like they say, I could get used to it in a hurry, but for me Cobra is already in the discussion.

For the better players who aren’t thinking about Cobra, aren’t discussing Cobra, and aren’t giving Cobra the chance to compete on performance, I don’t believe that over-emphasizing visible technology in your premium driver offering is going to do much to convert them.

That said, I hope I’m wrong. I played AMP Cell Pro for the better part of this season. Performance isn’t an issue with Cobra.

Tour adoption of BiO Cell+ has been quick. Rickie Fowler has played the new driver, and Jonas Blixt told me it took him less than a day to get comfortable enough with BiO Cell+ to ditch his ZL (it took him weeks to make the switch last time around).

The larger issue for Cobra is convincing more golfers that there’s some substance behind all the color. For that to happen, Cobra may need to deemphasize color, and take a slightly more traditional route (still true to the Cobra brand) with their better player offerings.

Like BiO Cell, BiO Cell+ features an all-lofts-in-one-head design. The updated MyFly hosel allows loft to be adjusted from 8 degrees to 11 degrees. Gone is last year’s fade setting (Cobra discovered almost no one used it). Replacing it are draw settings at 8.5, 9.5, and 10.5 degrees

Fairways and Hybrids Too

As with any good lineup, BiO Cell technology is available in fairways and hybrids as well.

With hybrids raw distance is less of an issue. It’s more about finding something that offers the desired look and feel.

From there it becomes a matter of gapping. Cobra makes that easy by offering a selection of adjustable loft (2-3, 3-4, and 4-5) hybrids (and fairways) that basically ensure you can hit any distance within your range.

With fairways we could talk about face construction, launch conditions, and ball speed, but the big picture takeaway is that you won’t lose yards playing a Cobra fairway.

The fairway wood market has been insanely distance driven and hyper-competitive the last couple of seasons. 17 yards, 10 more yards, 13 more yards…lots and lots of yards have been offered up.

While Cobra doesn’t really engage in distance-based marketing to the extent many of their competitors do, what they’ll tell you is that they’ve bridged the distance gap, and BiO Cell fairway is every bit as long as anybody else’s fairway.

I really like what Cobra’s done with the shaping of both the fairway and rescue. Both hit the sweet spot between too much bulk, an too much intimidation.

Throw in the same color selection (both hybrids and fairways) as the drivers, mix in Cobra’s gapping options, and you’ve got a fairway hybrid combo that’s well worth a look.

Cobra BIO Cell-7

BiO Cell Irons

Rounding out the BiO Cell family are the new BiO Cell irons. The new irons replace last year’s AMP Cell product. And while in that sense, BiO Cell can be seen as the natural evolution of the franchise; the reality is that BiO Cell bares little resemblance to what came before it.

With BiO Cell Cobra is chasing the ultimate blend of distance and forgiveness. Over the last couple of years the game-improvement category has, for better or worse, evolved into the distance iron category.

While forgiveness remains part of the discussion, if you’re not competing on distance too, you’re not competing. So while once again Cobra isn’t promising that their irons will give you 10 more yards, they’re extremely confident that they can match anybody else in the industry yard for yard.

The key to distance is, as it is for many others, an undercut channel cavity with a largely unsupported face. And yes…lofts are non-traditional, but with a 45 degree pitching wedge, Cobra’s pretty much right with most everybody else.

It ain’t no thing.

The forgiveness in the design comes from (as it almost always does) perimeter weighting.  Cobra has placed a relatively massive amount of tungsten (10 grams each) in the heel and toe to help maintain distance and control when you don’t quite hit the sweet spot.

Noteworthy perhaps is that in the short irons are constructed from a softer steel, and the tungsten weights have been placed in a more central position. The goal is to create more feel, and better control in the scoring irons. Whether or not that creates any weirdness in the set with one club not feeling quite like the next remains to be seen.

Early response to the aesthetics of the BiO Cell irons hasn’t been kind. They’re certainly bulkier than a good bit of what’s in the market today. In general game-improvement designs have gotten smaller, while BiO Cell looks like a bit of a throwback.

Sitting on the shelf next to JPX-EZ, SpeedBlade, and X2 Hot, getting into that discussion with one of the more unusual aesthetics could prove challenging. We have no doubt the performance will be there, and Cobra is always competitive on price (often the best bang for the buck).

Will golfers buy into the unusual look? Of that I’m less sure.

      Hello, M.M.
Go onto eBay and enter the name of the driver: “COBRA BIO CELL ladies driver”. It’s VERY VERY difficult finding a 2014 model as they are an extremely popular model and are no longer stocked by Cobra or by any retailers. The only way to get one is USED on eBay or by mugging a golfer on the course.
      Hope this helps.

I tested them, loved them and really don’t care if people think they are ugly coming out of my bag. Impact feels great, good distance, very accurate, and it gives a high trajectory with a soft landing. If you’re more concerned about pretty clubs, buy something else, if you’re looking to improve your game and not prone to peer pressure, give them a try.

I think Cobra did an awesome job w/ the Bio Cell Irons. I have played aping I5’s for the last 10+ years and no iron to date has made me want to switch until I hit these. Very forgiving, slightly longer than my old Ping’s , and I can shape my shot.
I tested Ping I25, Rocket Bladez, Titlest AP1 and 2, Amp Cell, and Callaway XHot; nothing compared to Cobra.

I’m a 10.3 handicap who struggles with consistency off the tee. I went to my local shop and used track man technology to get fitted for the right driver/shaft combo. Trackman was amazing and I highly recommend it!! I invest more than I should in my equipment, and I also spend a lot of time keeping up on golf equipment as it is my hobby of sorts.

The results of the Trackman process were that my current driver, Ping i20 with TFC 707 Stiff shaft, was the right one for me based on the numbers. This was music to my ears because I was able to avoid spending another $250-400 on a new driver. The other result was that Cobra Bio Cell+ with the Matrix Red Tie Stiff shaft was a good fit for me as well.

The bottom line: I have a hard time getting past the looks enough to pop for this driver, and it is all about the head. I love the white Red Tie shaft and it felt great to swing the club. The only thing that intrigues me is potentially buying the black/white head because it reminds me of the Storm Troopers from Star Wars. While that’s kind of bad ass, I wish they had a more toned down/classic black on black offering for me to look at. This would make me more interested.

I spent yesterday evaluating most of the major iron sets. This included Calloway, Titelist, Taylormade, Ping, Mizumo, Touredge and Srixon. I was particularly interested in the Titelist AP2. I was quite surprised to find out that the Bio Cell irons were my favorite. A close 2nd and 3rd were the Ping Karsten and Taylormade Speedblade. Following this was the Calloway Apex. The Titlelist AP1 and AP2 were okay, but unimpressive. Objectively, I was interested in how tight a pattern of balls I could hit with a particular club. In other words I wanted consistent direction and distance. Subjectively, I graded each on “feel”; how does the fit my swing. I don’t care at all how a club looks; I only care about scoring – others can worry about that. I am a 12 handicap and play 200+ rounds a year. My main weakness is hitting greens in regulation due to pulling the approach shot; more greens will translate directly to a lower score.

I just ordered my first set of clubs fitted to me and my game. The pro shop had me try other brands, but as a long time Cobra owner, he also had me try the Bio Cell. Wow, longer, straighter than the others, swing felt beautiful, ball flight great – I can’t wait for these clubs to be delivered so I can get out on the course with them. I bought a mixed hybrid/iron set – haven’t gone to the woods yet, still like my Callaways.

I work at my local golf shop, and I hit the BiO+ driver 3 times. All three times I hit over 300 yards and my final drive went 325!!!!! No joke! And the best part about that is that every single one went dead straight! It’s one of those clubs that you can just look down at the club and know you are going to hit a good shot. For me that’s everything, plus I love the colors even though some will not. Either way I would highly recommend this club to everyone. Switch up your routine an try something new because I can bet this club is worth the shot!

Yet another of your articles that causes controversy. However it’s horses for course’s as far as I’m concerned. One area I feel you could have covered more is the Hybrids. Unless I’m blind I cannot see one decent photo of those clubs. As you know only to well, most golfers these days are bagging Hybrids.

Cobra is the only golf company that makes anything even remotely aesthetically pleasing. I’m not kidding, I waited 2 years to buy irons because everybody had such ugly ones, then Cobra made something not pathetic looking and I’m all over it. Golf has never been known for looking good, let’s be honest. The apparel has been mocked for decades and you can’t argue that. Color is just fine by me. I just wish they had a far simpler head, and plain graphite shafts. I want simple and clean. Cobra has by far the best looking clubs, but they still need to simplify it up. Everybody loves their Mac products because they’re clean and sleek, but then they go out the buy the most tech’d out, ugly monstrosities of clubs. I don’t get it.

I have the “old” 2012 AMPs. Started with the 5W, I figured the technology sounded kinda good. Loved it – got the Driver, then the 3W. It seemed to me that it was not just the science in the heads, but also the total package – a balanced, comprehensive club. Not just R2D2 on a stick. The + sounds great – more smart, effective engineering that will give you measurable improvement. (The angled sweet spot is just plain logical and looks to me like a eureka moment born out of diligence and determined research.)

And for all you whining about the appearance…PLEASE! I would bet all the Pings irons and all the Kings horses that 90% of you swore up-down-and-center that you would never buy one of those fugly white-headed drivers from Taylor Made. Ya, right. Shutty, wagon leapers.

If it’s any sort of improvement on the AMP Cell then it’s going to be a great golf club.

As I stated earlier it has a hi bore xl tour look with a trunk or lid on it.

He may have “played the new driver” but he wasn’t playing it a few days ago in Australia…unless he had a custom paint job, which wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense.

The white outline on the Bio Cell+ is an absolute deal breaker for me. I really have to wonder who is in Cobra’s Focus Groups??? They should have rode the Amp Cell and ACP for another year and if the shareholders demand a new release, make a black version. That driver will end up being canonized.

I was hoping to try a Black Bio Cell+, but I guess I’ll just snatch up a Black Encore ZL for $150 or give the new Adams COR tested drivers a shot. I’m not at all bothered by the fact that they switched the adapter either. I only purchased 6!!!! Makes perfect sense to change the adapter for nothing tangible.

I’m wondering whether to buy the ZL Encore with lower loft or upgrade to the bio+ . Is the spin on this club that much lower? I am hitting the ball 280 yards carry only to spin back a yard….so i am happy with my distance. But if I could lower the trajectory and get some positive roll out …well…..I’d be interested to know if you’ve played both what your judgement is? Poulter plays the 8.5 ZL and I saw him testing at 2600 spin I would love to see his numbers on the biocell + to compare. As to the color debate…BC looks awesome..BC+ Not a fan but it’s more fun winning with uncool gear.

II am very interested in the Bio+. Im 32 and currently play a blue Amp Cell at 8.5*
Cobra’s bright colors are something that I believe helps with making solid contact. Gaming a club with a color that I can still see a residual “shadow” of when I take the club back and come through can only help, not hinder the swing IMO.
(Maybe that doesn’t happen to anyone else, but yes they are bright, and even on a not so sunny day I can see exactly where I had it sitting as long as I don’t blink during my swing.)
With the white line just behind the club face on the Bio +, I believe that will actually enhance that feature for me.
As for shaft graphics….I don’t even see them when I swing, so that is a non-factor.
I am also happy to hear they ditched the “fade” settings…. bc even most of the better players I know, generally want to draw the driver and get more roll. If they don’t want to, a neutral setting isn’t going to be a problem for a single digit handicap guy.

As for the irons…I game what would be considered an “ugly” iron in the original S3 with graphite shafts, all black and yellow…. but I love em!! Flat out performers….. even I don’t like the look of these irons, sorry to say. Again, if the performance is that good though, looks can be forgiven.

48 and really intrigued by the plus! Smaller footprint with higher launch lower spin AND more forgiving across the face? The two tone coloring is fine ……also does anyone else see the Cleveland hi-bore xl tour with a trunk lid?

Talk about being left out of the conversation? Krank golf clubs just destroyed Callaway in the world long drive championships in Las Vegas. Krank won for an unprecedented 4th year in a row and holds every world record and continues to manufacturers the world longest hitting drivers that is legal. http://www.Krankgolf.com

The woods and hybrids are pretty good looking, even the biocell+ model (I like the white), but the irons are where I walk away. Those things are pretty ugly and I can’t see them selling too much as a result. Cobra has been pretty good in recent years about producing eye catching, good quality products that are as good as the competitors, but these irons are just awful. I have a feeling they’ll be redesigning those pretty quickly this year.

I am mid-40’s, solid amateur player who competes in most of the significant amateur events in my state. I generally don’t care too much what my clubs look like as long as they perform. With that said, I actually really really like the look of the bio cell plus. I am surprised some have been so negative. I have not ever played Cobra, but I was interested in the amp cell pro last year (because I heard good things, not b/c of the looks), and I am very interested in the Bio Cell Pro because I like the technology and I think it will perform. The looks are a plus to me, but performance will be the real test.

The Amp Cell Pro has turned my driving around. I finally got a reasonable launch angle with a flat trajectory. The regular AC just went too high for me and I was going left with it. If I tried to hold off the release scared of going left, I blocked it right.

I’m very excited about the Bio Cell+. I don’t like the white accent around the perimeter though. I asked if there was a way to get that changed to the charcoal like my AC Pro has paired with the red. A little birdie told me, custom options like that will likely be available! Yippee!

Really hope your birdie was right. A charcoal outline replacing the white around a black BC+ would be legit!

The lineup is a winner on looks for me. I’m still bagging the original AMP driver and love it, but am definitely keen to see what the Bio Cell driver can do. I am intrigued by the Bio Cell irons, and if they provide a performance advantage I’d definitely consider them.
For the record, I love the look of the Bio Cell + driver as well!

I have always used Cobra products, especially the drivers and woods. I have nothing but positive things to say about the Cobra products I have used. I also use all the other competittors products as well. I am one of those mid 40’s guys who is not struck on organge. However, I put the Amp driver (8.5 degree) in play this year and I could not get it out of the bag. If these new drivers and woods are even moderately better than the AMP or AMP Cell Pro then I will certainly give them a look. I think Cobra is always in the discussion. They will stay that way if they don’t build products that look like those Bio Cell units ever again. Those irons are sure ugly.

I play the first ZL driver and would not change for anything. I would consider the 2 tone cell driver if it was not 2 tone paint. The irons look fake .

For me the “conversation” has nothing to do with looks, only performance. That’s a good thing because these new 2014 Cobra irons are about the ugliest things I’ve ever seen.

Anyway, in the 2013 “conversation” the Amp cell was decidedly out of my top five and the Bio-cell will have to contain some revolutionary, not just evolutionary, improvements to get back into the 2014 conservation. It looks like I’ll have to put on sunglasses while I test them, but I’ll suffer through it somehow.

One question though — Have you ever seen an Amp-Cell in the bag of anyone over 30? Neither have I.

The bio Cell + is the only new driver that I have any desire to seek out and hit. IMO the Bio Cell + looks to be far more interesting based on pics and tech talk than the new TM jet thing I can’t remember and the Cally Xhot2.

The Bio Cell 2 actually has me interested in their new Venollum crown. It may be something special or it may be pointless, but at least they got me interested and they are offering something with REAL potential. I typically hate white crown with graphics, but the white and black head looks really good. Based on hitting last year’s Bio Cell pro driver these should be really good. They definitely are on the right path.

The Bio Cell driver looks fantastic. I think they absolutely nailed it with the overall aesthetics of the driver. Love the ‘cell’ pattern on top of the crown! Bold colour isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and I’m glad they have addressed this by releasing the grey and black versions which look sweet as! The black version looks like one of the sickest drivers out there.

While it’s interesting what they say about the technology that has gone into the Bio Cell+, at the end of the day the consumer will be put off by such a loud, distracting crown colour scheme. No one will know about the tech side when picking up the driver in their local store. They may have shot themselves in the foot with this one.

The irons…….the less said the better unfortunately.

I said I liked the driver but will not be trying because of the price. I am not buying a TM driver either so I am not sure where you came up with that? I did not say anything negative about Cobra. I use Cobra Amp Cell Irons and have always spoke highly of them. Maybe you can wake up and understand a post before replying?

I’m sorry but no. Only the black head is appealing to me at all. The others are just too crayola for my tastes to be in the conversation. The performance would have to be extraordinary, instead of just in the same ballpark. I think for a lot of us in our 40s Cobra is just too flashy. That seems like an important segment to turn off from your products

I don’t think Cobra/Puma is all that interested in the 40’s demographic. It seems they are far more interested in bringing in younger blood and cornering that side of the market as opposed to competing with other companies for the more seasoned golfer.

I’m surprised, but I like the white outline on the woods. Something about it is appealing. The irons are butt ugly. Look like the irons Shia would play with if he played golf in the Transformer movies.

The irons look a lot like some recent Nike game improvement irons. The woods on the other hand look pretty good, and I even think the styling on the plus model would be easy to get used to. All depends on the performance though.

They are certainly in the conversation! Bold enough to go where most other brands are too nervous to push the envelope! Cobra has always pushed innovation in their products and it seems they are doing the same here! If performance is anything like AMP Cell and beutter golfers are in four a real treat.

I really like the lineup so far and for me they are always in the conversation.

My biggest complaint is with the irons stock shaft offering. I’d really like to see a more traditional weight shaft as a stock option. Light iron shafts just don’t work for me. I’m gaming the Amp Cell irons right now and after a shaft swap they are fantastic. I’m curious if I would be able to see a noticeable difference between those and the Bio Cell irons, but I have a feeling I’m never going to get a chance to test them out with my preferred iron shaft.

Most of the cobra fitting carts have the C-tapers as an option to try. Its not as good as being able to take a set out for a round or two but its better than nothing.
