2014 Golf’s Most Wanted: Gloves Under $18

You didn’t really think we were going to leave our more frugal readers hanging gloveless and out to dry, did you? Given the comments on our Most Wanted Premium Glove Buyer’s Guide, some of you actually believe we wouldn’t consider your needs.

Don’t fret, my fellow penny pinchers, today I bring you the selections you’ve been waiting for, and that includes the brand you mentioned most frequently; Master Grip.

Here’s the question: Are your budget minded ways to be rewarded? Does a glove need to cost $30 to receive an A from MyGolfSpy?

HELL NO.

Once again, we’ve crunched the numbers of come out with 5 value-priced gloves that we believe you should try for yourselves. Our winner was the consistent favorite with nearly every tester in our lineup. Our runners-up make up a great collection of gloves that should leave you praising the glove gods for offering up affordable finds that will allow you to play 3-4 gloves per round without going broke.

Scoring

Gloves were all reviewed based on FitComfortFeel, and Grip. Testers with glove sizes ranging from M to XL rated for each category. Additionally each tester chose his 5 favorites. Results were averaged and placed into a sliding scale for visual representation, and a final letter grade for overall score was assigned for each glove. Price and durability were not factored in the rankings.

What we discovered during our testing is that fit is the #1 factor in determining individual preference. It has a domino effect on comfort, feel and even perceived breathability. We challenge you to compare – look higher up the list than your current gamer. Try a couple on. Pick the one you think best fits your hand and game it for a round (or 4) and tell us what you think.

The best glove for your hand should fit like a second skin. It’s really that simple.

MyGolfSpy’s Most Wanted Gloves Under $18 for 2014

Some might be floored/shocked/appalled that one of the major OEM’s didn’t win this category, but sometimes there really are surprises. Asher makes a great sub-$18 golf glove. Actually, they make two that really stood out. While durability is not a factor in the results, it’s worth reading notes on the first two gloves. If you’re someone who beats up on gloves, you need to work on that, but you also might want to consider a thicker glove as well.

Don’t be surprised to see more than one glove under $18 sporting the coveted Cabretta Leather (you know, from those fuzzy sheep that grow hair instead of wool).

We mentioned it in the Premium glove buyer’s guide, but it’s worth noting again here:

With fit being the single most important factor, we’d advise that you should fit yourself for a glove as carefully as you would a new set of irons. A glove should fit like a second skin, there should be no wrinkles from a glove fitting too big. If it does, your grip will suffer and the glove will wear faster. Each of our top finishers is cut a bit differently, which is why our number one piece of advice is try on the glove that you think best fits your needs. If it fits…well…like a glove (not an OJ glove), you’re in business. If not, move down this list until you find the one that offers a truly sublime fit.

The 2014 Most Wanted Golf Gloves Under $18

asher-birdy-1st

If you don’t wear through gloves fast, Asher’s Cooltech Birdy is a GREAT starting point for your next glove purchase, especially for those of you who are budget minded. If do you wear out gloves a bit more quickly than you should, you’ll probably be happier starting your search with the TaylorMade Targa.

asher-death

Another great offering from Asher, the Cooltech Deathgrip will not only score you style points, but if you sweat, this glove might slow the tide. Again, if you tend to wear gloves out quickly, neither of the Asher entries is likely to be your best bet.

tmag-targa

An affordable take on a tour glove,  TaylorMade may have found the happy medium with the Targa, which strikes an excellent balance of comfort, performance and price. While not as budget priced as others, those not afraid of spending a few extra bucks will likely be happy they did.

mg-dyna

You raised a tremendous fuss over not seeing this glove in our Premium Glove Guide. Sorry boys, this isn’t a premium priced glove, but the number one most mentioned glove in the comments of our premium guide certainly deserves a place on this list. You guys are right, the MG Dynagrip Elite is a great glove. It does run a bit large, so you’ll likely need to order a size smaller than your normal glove. These gloves are so affordable, you can’t go wrong. $13.95 scores you TWO gloves.

srixon-cab

If we told you this was a premium glove you’d certainly believe us. For a cabretta offering, the price is more than solid. We like the addition of lycra on the back of the hand/knuckles to help this glove move with your hand better. We found that this one does fit a bit loose in the wrist, but is otherwise true to size.

In Closing

If you’re like me and your wife doesn’t understand why a round of golf consistently costs $50+ on the weekends, you’re likely shopping for a golf glove that will run you less than $18. This doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice anything.

Probably the best part of gloves under $18 is that you can finally buy 3 matching gloves and switch them throughout your rounds so that you’ve always got a fresh and dry one on your hand.

And finally, I know you’re not children (well, maybe a few of your are…) but it’s worth saying AGAIN – FIT MATTERS – find the glove that properly fits, there are more than enough choices here – you can thank me later.

Agree with two thoughts. Costco Callaway great 3fer value glove but wears quickly. But at about $6 per unit you can’t go wrong for the quality/value balance. However the BEST glove on the market regardless of price is the Mizuno Retro-fit. Better than Titleist or TaylorMade $30 gloves at about $16. Can only get on line through EW or Golfsmith Do not know why but you will not find in any retail store. Tremendous quality with slightly thicker leather that does not sacrifice feel of the club. Fit is accurate. Never stretches with use. Can be washed and lasts very well. I rotate each round. Try them. You will not be disappointed

I used to use only 3M Greptile Grip gloves, they had a material added on top of the leather in the palm portion that added extra grip. It was a phenomenal glove, I’d get them in bulk for around $6/glove. Now I can’t find them anywhere anymore.

I use Etonic G-Sok now, best fitting glove I could find.

I bought a green and an orange pair of XL gloves and they wore out within 8 games each.. the seams came undone on the green pair and the orange pair the material stretched.. and I usually wear a XL Cadet size glove.. Now I know they are inexpensive but I did expect a longer wearing from each pair.. too bad cause they look nice???? I guess looks are deceiving

First, I applaud you for an overall well done comparison. And we are delighted that you and your readers recognize the quality and value of our gloves. I would like to point out a few things:

      1) The image shown of our glove is of our original DynaGrip, not the Elite. A good image of the Elite can be found at mggolf.com/KNOW . (One quick way to tell by looking is that the original DynaGrip has a ball marker whereas the Elite does not as Tour pros prefer. The Elite also has an elastic knuckle hinge.)

      2) Some of your readers may be a little confused by the MasterGrip name. That is actually our old name. We changed our name in 2007 to MG Golf (website is http://www.mggolf.com).

      3) While we appreciate being included in your comparison, we tend to agree with your readers that the DynaGrip Elite (and really, all of our gloves) qualifies as a premium glove despite its low price. As you point out in your premium test,

“The single biggest factor contributing to the higher price is the material. All of the gloves we tested are constructed primarily from Cabretta leather. Cabretta comes from a sheep that grows hair unlike those wooly things running around your average barnyard. Cabretta is an exceptionally soft leather that provides outstanding feel.”

The DynaGrip Elite is all-cabretta leather. All of the other gloves in the “under $18” test are pieced together with leather and man-made materials with the exception of one full synthetic glove. (Some of the Srixon and TaylorMade gloves are arguably all-cabretta as well despite the Lycra inserts for flexibility and/or breathability.)

You further explain in your premium test,

“Premium gloves are often thinner and less durable than their less expensive counterparts. It may seem counterintuitive to spend more for a less durable product, but that’s the tradeoff for the softer, thinner material common to premium gloves. You’re paying for feel not durability”

Again, the DynaGrip Elite fits this description perfectly, with thinner cabretta leather that delivers ultra-sensitive feel, just like the Tour pros play.

Where we diverge from the rest of the premium pack is paid sponsorships. You allude to this factor saying “… premium gloves are designed for tour players … [they] never spend a dime [on their gloves]. Somebody needs to support their habits. That’s where you come in.”

Indeed, these Tour pros are not only being outfitted with an unlimited allowance of free premium all-cabretta gloves, they are also paid big bucks for playing them. Well, guess what, YOU pay for that endorsement. We let our gloves stand on their own merits and also sell direct to the player, not through pro-shops and other retailer. We thus eliminate a large percentage of the mark-ups that plague other gloves. That is why our gloves are so inexpensive and the quality is top-notch.

Again, overall I think you guys did a good job on your piece. I look forward to reading many more insightful product reviews.

Why use a glove at all? Don’t you want that ‘feel’ of the club (just like putting)? Take, for example, tennis players who would have the same interest in holding their racket as golfers in holding their club – tactile feel, dry (sweat avoidance), control, grip confidence, etc. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Prince-Grip-Plus-Tennis-Grip-Enhancer-Lotion/13057264 This stuff is cheaper than a glove, and one bottle lasts longer than most gloves (a drop or two on the hands will do).
By the way, if blisters are a problem, then it’s your grip that is the problem and gloves will only mask that.

I fully agree with Mr”Couv” :you feel better the handle of the club without wearing a glove!
However I ‘ve developed a serious intolerance to the sun ,(I live on the FRENCH RIVIERA all year round )so I have to play with long sleeves ,one glove on each hand ,long trousers and a large brimmed Australian Hat !
Golf remains fun despite those restrictions !

It’s good to read about some of these gloves, especially their sizing and their strong suits.
I had never come across either Asher or Hirzl before, as my local store doesn’t carry them.
Ages ago I recall ordering Master Grip gloves, way back when Hale Irwin was a popular golfer and their spokeman. They were good gloves, especially for the price. They did tend to dry out sooner than a glove like a FootJoy StaSoft,, but the price is incredible on those Master Grips, so you really can’t go wrong. I’d forgotten about them, but I’ll have to look them up again since you get two gloves for the price of one.

I have been using a Mizuno synthetic glove for the past 3 moths 2/3 rounds per week and I cannot wear it out. When it gets a bit grubby I just wash it and it looks brand new. No holes or worn spots.

I’ve been using the MG Gloves for 2 years and now have 4 buddies wearing them as well. It’s the best feeling glove at any amount and likely would’ve placed as high in the premium glove test as well.
6.50 is a STEAL for this glove, I’ve gone to using 1 every 3 holes as well and always have a fresh feeling, tacky gloves at all times. It would cost 90.00 to do that with FJ or Titleist gloves.

Just shot a 32 -4 at Bear Creek my best 9 hole round ever using this glove and the MG Ball.

      Winning!

I am a self admitted golf glove snob, and go through a lot of them as my hands perspire profusely. The best gloves I’ve found are at COSTCO, where you get 3 for approximately $18. Made by Callaway. Once you try them, you won’t go back.

I used to buy FJ or TM Gloves by the Doz. and gave away a couple out of each box because of the size not being right. I got keyed onto Master Grip from a friend and laughingly tried one just the heck of it. Great Glove!!! They are real quality and every one is a good fit. I buy Six and get 12, can’t beat it. Great Glove, great price.

I have not tried the Asher gloves, but have tried on all the others and played several. The glove I have used for the past 4 years is the Fit39 EX. This is by far my favorite glove ever with a great tacky grip, perfect fit and really good locking. They last a very long time as well and good in wetter conditions.

Have been playing the mg (master grip) Gloves for a couple of years now. Follow the sizing charts when ordering and the fit should be fine. Order the cadet size for better fit. The price is untouchable!!. MG offers same shipping costs for multiple gloves, so order your need for the season. These gloves wear better than most I’ve tried and stay softer longer. Great for gifts for your golfing buddies

This is not the correct site to make the following statement ,as it refers to the “TOP OF THE CLASS “Gloves :I ‘ll make it nevertheless here:I bought the FOOTJOY PURE TOUCH glove after the review of GOLFSPYX made it the winner of the high end (and expensive gloves ).
It’s an extraordinary glove ,smooth, light ,comfortable ,you really feel the grip of the club .The best glove I ever have worn .
Alas ,I couldn’t get the pair (I play with gloves on the two hands ),so I have an “ordinary” FOOTJOY on the right hand .Also ,shipping to EUROPE plus Taxes and Custom Duties cost me a fortune .
My wife came near to pull out my eyes !
I couldn’t find the FOOTJOY PURE TOUCH in EUROPE !
      Why ?

Another vote for the Asher Chuck here. I’ve been using them for 2 years and they are by far the best bang for your buck in colored gloves. I’ve only tossed two or three in that 2 year span and they were probably still usable, but for the price it’s easier to just open up a new one

The Deathgrip, especially in black, is an awesome-looking grip in my opinion. The only issue I had was the skull on the palm wore off, but the grip itself never developed a hole. I’ve also owned the Birdie and Chuck (the latter in red, black and blue) and never wore them out.

To be fair, though, I generally keep three gloves in my bag and rotate them after every third hole. Maybe I don’t grip as hard as I think I do, as well.
