There Were A Lot of Simulators at the PGA Show

Sufficed to say the number of players in the indoor golf/home simulator space has increased tremendously in just a few short years. Every year brings another company or two (or three, or four) showing off a full-blown indoor golf setup.

Some of them do just golf, while others offer golf along with football, soccer, and even hunting. We’ve also noticed that swing analyzer manufacturers and what you might call budget-level launch monitor providers, are entering the simulator space as well.

We’ll save the technology debates for a later date, but here’s a quick look at the simulators we saw at the 2016 PGA Show…and the crazy thing is we probably missed one or two.

I believe Trackman uses e6 as its simulator engine.

So I tried out quite a few different systems before putting one in of my own. The frustration I felt was trusting the outcome of the ball flight. I never quite felt that any of the systems truly replicated the ball flight well enough. This would always leave me feeling like I was just playing a cool video game. I ended up settling on a trackman system, which I know is quite pricy, but I have always felt like I could trust the results. If you are going to spend the money to set up the infrastructure I would recommend spending the extra money on a system you can trust. I find that not only can I enjoy playing golf all year round, in this vast harsh wasteland, but if I am having trouble with my swing the numerical feedback coming from the trackman simulator provides me much better picture of what is happening with my swing than guessing on the range.

very true these places are more than likely seasonal. i’ve yet to find someone choosing to hit balls in a simulator over going to the course. the problems were mentioned well above, and i completely agree the business model is broken, not to mention as Top Golf continues to add locations nationwide for those wanting their winter golf fix.

the barrier to home use i feel is space. as prices continue to drop, the biggest issue is finding room to use these. even those with basement don’t have the ceiling room.

I really like golf simulators. I got my first taste of them a few years back and really enjoyed it. Great to be able to play golf indoors and you don’t have to walk too far between shots.

The problem is they are way too expensive and out of reach for most golfers.

I’m loving my Skytrak! $2,000 for night golf after I get off work and my son goes to bed isn’t a bad deal to me.

There was a place near my house called Red-e-golf which used the Trugolf E6 equipment. Overall the equipment worked well except for putting. The overall business concept struggled because they wanted a minimum $40 per hour to use the monitors. If you have 4 guys, no problem, but that did not happen often for them and the place was empty more than it was busy. They would not discount prices for single users. No one is going to pay $40 to hit balls for an hour. If if were not for their bar, the place would have closed shortly after opening instead of making it 2 years. I would have priced usage differently to get people in the place and using the machines. If you’re going to open one of these places, you need to be smart and understand your market and your customers.

I’m sure every sim provider runs its business for example, but we have an aboutGolf-outfitted facility near that illustrates that the manufacturers are the source of their own problems. Like the near you, $40 an hour is the going rate…more if you want the widescreen. Operators need to pay rent, pay employees, and maintain the sims. Rent is a 12 month issue, but in most areas the sim business is largely seasonal. Money has to be made.

The larger issue is that some…definitely aboutGolf have antiquated business models. There’s not a truly viable upgrade path when new software, golf courses, or even camera system/launch monitor technology is released. With a few small discounts, they expect operators will pay the full load each time. A full sim setup costs between $35K and $50K. Wide screen and custom installations can cost significantly more. Consider many facilities have 5-8 simulators, but they’re still expected to pay $1500 for ever software release and basically 12K-15K every time the core product is updated. It’s unrealistic (actually it borders on extortion). What happens is the technology gets outdated. It looks bad for the operator, it looks bad for the sim manufacturer, and the consequence is either guys stop playing, or they move like cattle to the facility with the newest (best looking) tech.

That sounds pretty familiar. We’ve got a place close by that recently added 3 HD Golf simulators to their Racing Simulators. They are charging between £25 ($35) and £50 ($72) per hour depending on the day/time. Most of the time it is £35 ($50). Needless to say that most of the time the simulators are standing empty. They say that 6 people can use the simulator. I think they mainly want ‘group party’ like customers and are not thinking about real golfers. With 6 golfers you aren’t going to hit more then a few shots in an hour!

If they would lower the price they would get a lot more normal golfers in that would just use it for a bit of practice, especially in the winter. But at the moment it is more expensive to play the simulator then it is to play a real course!
