FIRST LOOK: 2017 Callaway Steelhead XR Irons

Do you remember the year 2000?

Tiger completed his career Grand Slam and we first heard the term “hanging chad.” Brad was married to Jen and, for reasons I still can’t figure out, Angelina Jolie married Billy Bob Thornton. Britney Spears was still hot, and Callaway gave us the Steelhead X-14 irons.

Well, to borrow a phrase from Ms. Spears…

Oops, they did it again.

Meet the 2017 Callaway Steelhead XR’s.

Something Old, Something New

Callaway’s new Steelhead XR irons will replace the soon to be 2-year-old XR irons. Yes, nostalgia freaks, that’s a 2-year product cycle, a veritable eternity for a Game Improvement iron. And as Cally’s recent tradition shows us, the new clubs combine nostalgia with modern technology.

Callaway Steelhead XR irons - 3

“The Steelhead X-14 irons were one of the most successful Callaway irons of all time,” says Dr. Alan Hocknell, Callaway’s Senior VP of R&D. “An iconic shape in the game improvement area known for its sole width, topline, offset, technology known as bore-through that takes weight out of the hosel.”

The new Steelhead XR’s borrow the slightly longer blade length, more rounded face and signature hosel-to-face transition from its Y2K predecessor. It’s a throwback with some new tech under the hood.

“We wanted to use all these features that these irons benefited from in terms of creating distance and feel, and add to it our Face Cup technology.” – Alan Hocknell

This is very much a game improvement iron with many of the same concepts we see in other GI/distance irons, such as the PING G, the Wilson C200 and Cobra F6 – specifically weight distribution to maximize forgiveness and hot, flexible faces designed to maximize ball speed.

Return of the Bore-Though

Callaway is bringing back the hollow bore-though hosel in the Steelhead XR’s. The purpose is to get some weight out of the hosel and reposition it so that the center of gravity is right in the center of the scorelines.

Callaway Steelhead XR irons - 7

“You might think all irons have that, but it’s not the case,” says Hocknell. “We’ve used the lightness of this hosel to get that weight distrbution and put the CG right there.”

Moving weight around in any golf club is an ongoing battle in R&D. The weight saved in the hosel allows Callaway to increase MOI for forgiveness and move the CG around in the long, middle and short irons.

Callaway is essentially flighting the CG throughout the set, which they say is unique for game improvement irons. The CG is very low and far back in the long irons to make them easier to get airborne and go farther. The mid irons have the CG very low and mid-back, again for easy launch but also more control, and the short irons’ CG isn’t quite as low and in the middle of the iron for lower, higher spinning shots. Basically, as the irons get shorter, the CG gets a wee bit higher and moves slightly forward.

New Gen 360 Cup Face Technology

Thin, flexible faces that push COR (Coefficient of Restitution – essentially how long a ball can legally stay on the face of the club) closer to USGA limits is where OEM’s are finding distance for the irons. Callaway’s method to make the face flex is its 360 Cup Face Technology™.

Callaway Steelhead XR irons - 5

The Steelheads feature the latest generation of Cup Face Technology, with a lightweight, thinner perimeter. This allows for higher ball speeds with on-center strikes while minimizing ball speed loss as you stray from the sweet spot. Cally says this gets the Steelhead’s COR right up to the USGA’s COR limit.

“The forgiveness of this iron is really, really good, especially for ball speed when you don’t hit the center of the face. You’ll see added distance and the ability to launch the ball effectively, even when you don’t make center contact.” – Alan Hocknell

There’s also what Callaway is calling a steel-infused layer of polyurethane in the club head. Its purpose is twofold: absorb vibration and add weight, which allows Callaway to lower the club’s CG.

Specs, Pricing, and Availability

steelhead-specs

So Callaway has reached into its past once again, resurrecting another iconic product name. We suspect it will again be well-received.

The new irons will list at $799 in steel and $999 in graphite. The stock steel shaft is True Temper XP 95 Stepless, and stock graphite is the Matrix F15. Several no-charge alternatives are also available. The Universal Callaway grip is standard, and a Callaway offers a full line of premium aftermarket shafts and grips.

The Steelhead XR’s will be in stores September 2nd.

Are You Glad They Brought Back The SteelHead?

Q: Are the loft and lie angles adjustable by anyone other than Callaway? Just a little concerned that the S2H2 hosel will not readily permit this.

My recollection is that Callaway was among the first to lengthen clubs and strengthen clubs by number, e.g., shaping a 7 iron to be rounded and look like a short iron and then putting 8 on the sole. Not sure that is for everyone, as longer clubs tend to be problematic for center face strikes. With the advent of hybrids, I don’t think that I need super long mid irons.

If the lofts and lies are adjustable, I am going give these a try.

I bought custom fit set of these irons with KBS shafts, they are very forgiving and give a high penetrating flight. Great looking irons to boot, however I have noticed the chrome finish does not look too durable, after a few rounds the chrome on the faces is marking up, despite the fact I tend to hit most shots out of the centre of the club. Never had this issue with my Cleveland irons which were also chrome finished.i suppose they are tools, and not ornaments so shouldn’t complain!!

I own these and have 6 rounds on them. Built to my specs by Callaway. They are excellent irons. Long and forgiving for sure. But you can control trajectory and direction if you want. And they hold the green very well. I moved to these from blades and am not looking back. Shot my personal best of 72 with these

Fantastic move by Callaway. Except the strong lofts. These will sell like hot cakes. Not the club for me, but I’m proud to be an ELY shareholder. They are definitely headed in the right direction. Especially now that they finally have made some your golf balls that don’t feel like rocks.

Take a look at the lofts of your vintage 2000 Callys. Guess what? They’re pretty much identical to those in the new Steelhead lines. Flight characteristics are probably pretty much the same, if not better. Only the number stamped on the bottom is different.

Why is this such an enormous deal for otherwise intelligent, reasonable people?

      Reply

      Keith Finley

      Not true. An X-14 6 iron was 29 degrees. A 5 iron was 26. Now the 6 is 26.

      dr. bloor

Um, right, but that’s completely not my point. Who gives a flying fig whether your 26* club has a “5” or a “6” stamped on the sole? Your bag still probably consists of 9-10 irons (or irons/hybrids) with 3-4* increments between 22/23* and 58/59*, give or take a degree. The 26* club is going to have a 4, 5, or 6 stamped on it. Big deal. It’s all about gapping, anyways.

      Keith Finley

I think the problem is that these new jacked irons spin much less as well. So you hit a 26 degree six iron with 3500 rpm and it goes 190, but can’t hold a green,

      Mark

It’s exactly the point. You wrote “Guess what? They’re pretty much identical to those in the new Steelhead lines. ” and that is incorrect. No matter how you try to spin it after being informed you were wrong…

Typical Internet post, no real facts – just an opinion with made up facts to help validate your claim.

      J Mac

The point is the gapping has been screwed with in order to have these jacked lofts. We need less distance between our scoring clubs in order to be more accurate hitting into greens. Used to be there were pretty consistent 4 deg. differences between wedges and irons. Now we have 5 or even 6 deg. differences in the scoring clubs, and 2 to 3 deg. differences in our long irons and hybrids. Most mid to high handicap golfers end up with 15 yards between their scoring clubs, and less then 10 yard differences in their distance clubs. THAT is the problem with these jacked up lofts.

I just spent the last 45 min roaming thru Callaways site. The engineering at Callaway is always working on product to benefit amateurs. Both high and low combined. After back surgery it was years before I could swing a club again but once allowed too I picked up used xr2 hots and worked my way back to a respectable 12 Hcp. A year ago I picked up the XR’s and what a difference! I’m 68 now playing to a 9 and the “steelheads” are longer and play to a greezer that has always played to the toe I’m in!! …Thanks John for your publication and thanks Callaway.

Nope, they didn’t. The XR and XR Pro irons are at the tail end of their 2nd year. The XR OS – a Super Game Improvement iron, came out late last year. The Steelhead XR is a replacement for the 2 year old XR. I would imagine a Steelhead XR Pro iron is on its way, but Callaway hasn’t said anything about that yet.

The XR Driver/FW line was updated this past yea with the XR 16 series, but the XR irons are in their 2nd year.

Steelheads are a hacker’s delight. The offset and bore-thru provide a great combination of dynamic loft and feel, especially nice for those who impact irons toward the toe. Add the higher COR face and it may be worth the upgrade. I have several regripping customers who have just about worn the grooves off their older Steelheads, so this may be just the ticket to get them into new irons.

This reviewer has personally hit these incredible irons and completely disagrees with your outrageous statement. Based on launch monitor testing (don’t worry which one) these are carrying at least a club longer than my current XR irons but the feel is so buttery soft and the trajectory is piercing.

I just want to publicly say how very grateful I am for Callaway launching these irons to the mass market so everyone has more options to choose from besides the XR, XR Pro, XR OS, Apex CF16, Apex CF16 Pro and Apex CF16 Pro Combos. These epic irons have dropped this author’s handicap from a paltry 20 to now a +3.
