Adams Golf…At It Again! (Adams FAST 10)

Adams Golf is at it again…and when we say “at it again”…we mean they are busy innovating and pushing the envelope of technology in golf yet again! And where this is not a completely new technology it is a totally new spin on it. It literally seems like we are writing an article like this every couple weeks about products coming out of Adams Golf. Remember the new putters that they are releasing…if not go check them out.

So this new club is called the Adams Speedline FAST 10 and they WILL be coming out with them…I think sometime in March 2010. And there is a driver to go along with this as well…but that is still in the prototype stages. So what’s with the name? Well from what we have heard the “10” stands for the year it will be coming out 2010…and the “FAST” we believe stands for its ability to be adapted for different style golfers so quickly…but this is just a guess.

Adams Fast 10 Fairway Wood

WHAT IS THE NEW TECHNOLOGY IN THIS CLUB?

Well…take a look at the sole..can you see where the milling marks are on the heel and toe of the club? Well there used to be (2) weights pods in those spots, but they were milled out to fit the golfer this club was built for. You can still see one of the weight pods on the back of the club…this one was left unmilled. This is an advantage because each head can be milled to specific weight for each player etc…and from what we hear the tour vans will have a small milling machine to customize each head for the players.

You might be saying well Taylormade and many other companies already have adjustable weight woods…so why is this any different. Well it is different because it can be super specific with exactly where the weight is placed and exactly how much weight is removed. With other adjustable weight drivers the weight can ONLY go into a specific spot. This club can give the player much more specific weight distribution to better correct unwanted ball flight patterns.

Is This The First Milled Driver?

Now, is this the first time a driver or fairway has been milled…no. You might remember the Goldwin AVDP drivers designed by my friend Dick Delacruz. This driver was years ahead of its time and still would be if it were released today. There would have to be a few changes but this driver was 100% milled. Think about how difficult that would have been. So this is not the first time…but…this is the first time it has been used for this purpose. And it is a very functional one…just don’t know how they would do this for mass production. But they did it with putters…so I am sure it could happen on a large scale if it catches on.

Milled Drivers? Well We Have Milled Putters Now.

Milled putters are so popular on tour because they can be altered so much quicker then a cast putter. On tour a pros need changes on the go…they need them done quickly and they need them done right. And with a cast putter you have to make an entire new mold…which can take weeks…the pros don’t have that much time. But with a milled putter the changes can be made in less then a day. You would be surprised how many putters on tour that look exactly like the one you bought from the store really aren’t much like yours at all. They might both say the same name on the sole…but most likely the pros putter head has been altered. They have been custom made for the pro. He might try a putter on the putting greens and say…”Well I like it…but…can you make it a little taller, 15 grams heavier and can you mill the cavity out a little more so the sound changes some.” And with a milled putter you can do these changes in hours.

So maybe this will catch on…only time will tell. But once again I have to give kudos to the guys over at Adams. You can’t say these guys aren’t hard at work trying to make the game a better place…well at least a more interesting place.

So tell Adams what you think of this new technology…trust us…they’re listening ;)

I love Adams Golf, and I play an Insight Tech 9015D but I don’t understand how I can find the opportunity to get my driver or FW milled given my hectic schedule as an Amateur.

I am usually in a traffic jam rushing from work to the course so I can get 18 holes in before sundown like other Amateurs, so changing adjustable weights at home seems to make more sense.

Additionally, most amateur players are constantly changing their swings. The “specific weight” I was fitted to one week, may throw me off the next week. I am not confident in this idea.

Best looking Adams fairway wood yet. They’ve been making really great technological strides, and their products are fantastic… I think that the death of the “box” shaped woods and hybrids is a great move for the company………………. Their current line of 9032LS driver and fairway combo would have been a hit all by themselves… but they used that weird shape in the fairway….. now with the Fast 10 they can have a high performance fairway wood that looks like a traditional golf club.

I’m excited about this… gonna email my Adams rep tonight!!!

Thats why it will be important to get fitted. If you just go into the store and grab a stick off the rack then yes it would be a headache.

Personally I think this is a terrible idea. Joe average golfer isn’t going to know how he wants his driver weighted. He’s gonna know I slice the ball so I wanna draw driver. With a few clicks of the wrench BOOM! he’s got that. He won’t wanna send his driver to Adams and have it ground down then sent back. If this idea takes off it will be a tour thing only. Or it will cost $1000 and with each club you get a grinding wheel and some lead tape.

It’s a great concept and really seems to have it’s merrit, but I would think it has to be very exspensive to customize the sole for the average consumer.

      I think the consensus is:

      1) Cool idea for tour players
      2) Not practical for the average player.

Perhaps Adams will have a non milled model with the same shape and design? Or maybe they have a plan to send tour vans around the country giving average folks a chance to get their clubs customize milled?

Based on the design above, I don’t think it’s a particularly enticing club design, but if Adam’s has a plan to give the average player a chance at tour luxuries, then they might be on to something.

Thisreminds me a lot of the balancing machines I have seen for industrial fans, where they take a fan blade, stick it in a machine, spin it, and then a logarithm determines where to place a few weight plugs to made it spin smoothly.

I’d bet that if this turns out to be lucrative that irons won’t be far behind….and it’s probably more beneficial for irons.

This is great idea, and I hope they follow it up with a grass roots iniciative like Bridgetone did with there ball fitting system.

I love Adam clubs and have a good few of them including the new Adams 9032LD driver. However, this seems completely geared towards getting more tour players to put Adams fairways in their bags. From a branding point this will be huge but I’d be very surprised if you saw this “exact” technology available for the masses.

I would be a bit apprehensive of getting a $300-$400 fairway wood made up to find it’s not an ideal fit. That of course is unless they make the retail version have interchangeable sole plates :-S

It is a great concept for the touring pros…just don;t think it will be as functional for the masses. It would be difficult to CNC for the masses and also is non-adjustable after being milled.

I really like the concept, but it is definitely one of those clubs you would have to try to see what kind of results you would get. I think the looks are basics, but looks aren’t everything. I am interested in seeing how this performs.

I don’t get it, I like the driver and the concept but how’s the average player going to benifit since we don’t have access to tour vans every week? And how much is it going to cost?

With the “3|15º” on the sole I think it is a Fairway and not a Driver. The number “10” does make us golfers instantly think Driver Loft so that seems like a poor name selection or at least poor execution on the art on the sole. Interesting concept of milling the sole of the club. I’m not sure what it adds but it is visually interesting.

I’m not really sure why this is better than MWT from TaylorMade. Sure you can mill the head to the exact specs to fit the player but then what if their swing changes, or they sell the club? You can’t exactly re-attach material that has been milled off of the head. With changeable weights its as easy as turning a wrench to adjust the driver and if you want to change it again you just replace them. Also, I’m guessing that the FAST name means something like Fully Adjustable Sole Technology or something like that because milling away the head material is not nearly as fast as changing weights. I see this as a way to make adjusting the head seem more high-end and customized but really it is just an irreversible change that wouldn’t suit the average consumer.

Yes Mark that is a limitation to this type of technology. There are advantages and disadvantages to this tech.

But TM has a major one as well. And that is the fact that they are not as precise as some pros need. And also it has been proven in test after test that the amount of weight they are moving has little to no effect on ball flight patterns.

I kinda suspect that the TM tour van has weights that are waaaay more granular that the ones available to us over the counter. Making the weights should be relatively simple.

      Anybody know about this.

      mygolfspy

Yes their tour van does have additional weights not available on the retail models…although still not enough weight to make ball flight changes. The only driver that has been made that had enough was one called a Mag Cruzer. The weights were 60 grams. Only way this could be done was by making the head out of magnesium. Right now head weights restrict the amount that can be used for MWT.
