Experimental Adjustable Weighting System
Here is an exclusive inside look of an experimental concept drawing for a new adjustable weighting system. I thought this one was kind of interesting…there is a pivot point located in the center of the head which can be swung from the heel to toe. The rest of the design is a bit too radical…but then again so are a large % of the drivers coming out nowadays. So you never know…you might just see something like this hitting the shelves from a major OEM sometime soon.
There are going to be more and more radical designs being pushed through in the next few years that will truly shock you guys. I have seen some stuff on the drawing board from some of the major OEM’s lately that are pretty creative and wild. There are a couple right now that are close to coming out of the prototype stage that are pretty shocking. But how many of these radical designs will actually provide any benefit to the golfer is the real question.
“Shock & Awe” Driver Technology
Lately…many of the major OEM’s seem to be resorting to more of a “Shock & Awe” type marketing plan when designing their clubs. This way it is almost impossible not to be drawn to their product when you walk through your local golf shop. But unfortunately…more times then not there is little to no benefit to the advertised technology. But the guys with the big dollars will do their best to figure out a way to make you think that their is no way your game can improve without it.

I take it this is a Wilson driver good bless ‘em. After the Powerband, Invex, FatShaft and Spine you think they’d learn their lesson LOL. Maybe they should try a ‘looks awsome and hits the ball miles driver’ at their next R&D meeting LOL. Do you remember the clear perspex driver MGS? And the driver like the Callaway C shape in the mid ’90’s which had to be filled in to conform? Any time the word ‘exoskeleton’ is used in a driver design you know it’s going to look groovy LOL.

It was a Bullet driver I was thinking about…

All the OEM’s are playing catch up.to Taylor Made owns the driver market with over 55% of the pie.
Marketing has proven the average golfer will go for “pretty” over is the club player freindly. Any way that is my experiece from being in the golf business the last 20 plus years

This is what Frank Zapa used to call the “garni du jour”. Record companies would dress up an album cover to attract attention so the “kids” would buy it no matter what crap was inside, it’s called marketing. We should be immune to this by now, but we’re not.

I fall for it, as far as I will go hit the driver that looks “weird” but in the end, it always comes down to feel, control and comfort to me. I am really attracted to solid sounding drivers on impact also.

Tom Wishon has already done this.

Looks count for little with a driver. Just try lots and pick what works best and what shaft is best.
I found the horrible sounding and horrible feeling Cleveland HiBore XLS worked better than the super duper Taylor Made R9-so stuck with that.
That is until the Mizuno MX700 came along-I now have that custom fitted. Wow WHAT A DRIVER, superb distance, control, looks and sound. It has it all and is pretty good price too. Only thing it lacks is the adjustablity-which IMHO is a gimmick-few will ever use it

as far as looks go, this is a little extreme, but when compared to the callaway C driver, it seems pretty lame…LOL…on the adjustability part of this concept, it is pretty simple, and its something that i am surprised no one else has thought of yet.

I like the adjustable weight mechanism. Looks like it could be easily tweeked to allow you to adjust the center of gravity forward and backward as well, which is something I’ve never seen done but could theoretically be used to allow you to adjust the launch angle. Move it forward when its windy for a lower launch. . .
Ugly club. looks like the batmobile, but interesting weight adjustment concept. Didn’t Mizuno have a driver where the weight moved in slots around the back of the head?

Actually is a great patent for what you are talking about that is not currently being used. Yes Mizuno actually used a design I had drawn up years ago. They moved on a rail system.
