So How & Where Did The Idea For BestGrips.com Get Started?

We have been in the leather golf grip business for about 8 years.

  • We wanted to direct our marketing and sales efforts to small club-makers and to the retail buyers rather than the large OEM manufacturers.
  • We felt very strongly that while leather is a vastly superior material for golf grips, wrapped grips simply put, have a design flaw.
  • We believe the stitched panel leather grip overcomes this design flaw and retains all the superior qualities of genuine leather.
  • The stitch panel leather grip is a unique platform creating, if you will, an easel for design and innovation.

BestGrips.com (Questions & Answers)

Q. How I got in the leather golf grip business?

When my son was about 12-13 years old, he announced that he was going to be a professional golfer.  He had been playing recreationally for about 4 years at that time but nothing serious.  I built him a new set of sticks; something I felt would be appropriate.  Gave him a speech about hitting a 1,000 golf balls a day for the rest of the summer.  After about two weeks his hands were raw; semi cords are pretty tough on a kids hands.  Remembering leather golf grips from back in the day, I found them in Australia and 8 years later BestGrips.com was formed.

Q. What makes your grips unique?

Genuine leather!  Leather golf grips will out perform any and all grips on the market, period.  While, leather outperforms all other materials, wrapped leather grips have a design flaw.   Our genuine leather hand-stitched panel grip retains all the superior qualities of leather but doesn’t have the design flaw of wrapped grips and our new gridiron grip brings the feel and superior qualities of the NFL football to golf.  This gridiron leather grip is the most unique feel in golf grips.

Q. Has any one on tour played your grips?

Over the last few years we have had a number of tour players use our wrapped grips.   We do not currently have anyone on tour using our grips.  The costs and ego’s of tour players make it very difficult to get tour endorsements.  This cost makes the tour the exclusive domain of large market OEM’s.   The tour is in fact a barrier to innovation not a market validator or innovator.  We believe the small club-fitter is the most innovative player in the golf market.

Q. What advantages are there for golfers using leather golf grips?

Nothing feels or lasts like genuine leather and with our exclusive Protac treatment nothing performs better in any weather conditions.  Additionally, leather is a natural vibration dampener where rubber is in most cases a vibration enhancer.

Easy on the hands, superior feel, superior wearability and superior wet weather performance – genuine leather golf grips by BestGrips.com

Q. What is the wrapped leather grips design flaw you speak about?

The seam can peel!  Wrapped grips are made by wrapping a strap of leather around the shaft of the club.   With the older hickory shafts (which were thicker) this was done directly on the shaft.  With modern steel and graphite shafts (which are noticeably thinner) an under-listing is necessary for correct grip size.

The edge of the strap is skived to a blunt edge (not as tapered) and an overlap edge (more taper with the tip being noticeably thinner).  The blunt edge is wrapped over the overlap edge creating overlapped yet smooth seam.   It is this overlap seam which creates the problem.  For quick or high speed swings this edge can peel under the off hand thumb (for right handed players that would be the left thumb).  A short off hand thumb grip as opposed to a long thumb grip can really exasperate this problem.  Obviously, the direction of wrap and the tension of the strap are critical for the prevention of peeling.

Q. Can you explain your Protac system for our readers?

Protac is a BestGrips.com proprietary terpene based rosin tack formula.  If you have used genuine leather grips in the past or are familiar with pine tar rosin bags used in other sports, the most common being baseball, then you are familiar with the concept of rosin based tack.

The famous Neuman Leather golf grip which set the standard for genuine leather golf grips used a pine tar rosin base as did everyone else that have made leather golf grips.  This pine tar rosin based system made from natural materials (pine tar) did not always age well.  They can “chalk” with age.  Chalk is the decomposition (oxidation) of the naturally occurring impurities.  It leaves an off white residue on the surface of the leather.

BestGrips.com has reworked this formula using synthetic and not natural products (pine tar).  We retained the “pico” base of the old rosin formula but replaced the natural rosin (pine tar) with pure synthetic chemicals, which will not chalk.

Q. What are some of the exotic skins you offer for golfers on your grips?

We make club and putter grips out of cowhide, gator, eel, lizard, ostrich, emu, shark, salmon and rattle snakeWe are only limited by imagination!

Q. What other products do you offer?

PutterShoes® is a registered mark of BestGrips.com.  PutterShoes® putter head-covers are uniquely and individually designed exclusively for BestGrips.com.

Kind of frustrating website! I couldn’t find any specific information except reviews about your products! I want to buy a hand wrapped leather grip for a putter my grandfather hand made 60 years ago and has the 17″ long leather hand-wrapped grip he put on it in style at the time. I would like a replacement grip that has a larger diameter underlisting on it and I can’t find it on your web page. Do you offer hand wrapped leather grips, underlistings, end caps, glue, and specific tape? Thanks, Rick Driscoll

Too bad you have to be a drug dealer of Tony Montana proportions to afford these.

It is a shame that this is only one side of the story and full of inaccuracies.
As for the wrap being flawed, why is it the fastest growing choice among players on Tour? Could it be, that it is not commercial for this company to make so they bag the product. If you want to know about real flaws in some leather grips, dig a deeper and find the truth. If these grips are so good, how come they are not or never have made them for Titleist?

I have done business with Harry for several years. He does real sweet work. Pricey, but you get one of a kind grips. The Tejus Lizard grips are amazing to look at. The patterning. The feel of Cobra is weird.. brittle little hairs. Looks neet though. If you have a putter you want to jazz up.. Start with Harry and his grips. Harry was with GripMaster until they had a falling out. US made also. Harry and his wife refuse to get anything from China. All us MADE.. Check out their shoe covers(putter covers) They do matching sets

This is the kind of manufactures that make the golf industry interesting to me, not the typical OEM’s like TMAG, Callaway, ect ect.. Not that they make bad products or golf equipment.
Its the small guy like a bestgrips.com or Eidolon that push innovation and who sometimes produce a superior product, I commend mygolfspy for bringing us the so called un knowns in the sometimes boring world of golf equipment. Bravo!
