Nike’s New Patent App Might Have The Answer
Nike Golf is filing for patents at an incredible rate of late. And if they’re able to get even 1/2 of these through the system successfully….they will have a damn large chunk of patent real estate in their portfolio. Their latest patent app is once again all about allowing the golfer more adjustment capabilities….seems like most golf club apps are nowadays.
Lots Of Possibilities
Yes…the drawings are crude but look past the screws and odd shaped faces and think about uses for this app. This app could be used in many different ways…one of those ways would allow the golfer the ability to change from playing a blade one day to a cavity back the next. Or maybe allow him to arrange his set any way that suits him best. Maybe you just want a more forgiving 3-iron but blades for the rest of your set. Or maybe you would like to change out the back to have more weight towards just the heel or maybe the toe…this could all be an option with the claims covered in this most recent Nike Golf patent app.
So take a look at the patent app link below and let Nike know what you think about their newest idea!

Looks like another gimmick to me. Adjustability has already gone too wild. Sooner or later people will start to realize it’s the indian and not the bow or the arrow. What happened to actually learning how to hit a golf ball?
I agree with Luke. If golf is made to easy and does not require skill but instead the most technically advanced clubs, I would quit playing. People want everything to be fast and easy today and are not willing to take the time to learn and develop skill.
Rolling on the floor laughing my head off. You could mount a laser on the club that points right at the target and people would still suck. Suck in two ways. #1 the golf shot would suck. #2 suckers to think that technology will make them not suck.
I am quite sure you won’t quit playing “instead the most technically advanced clubs, I would quit playing”
Can I get an Amen to that?
What? You mean I can’t buy a swing?
This is yet another contribution to golf that will make history by becoming one of the worst clubs made. I’m no engineer or physicist but it seems to me that the more components a golf club has compromises the simple nature of the tool. These will be those bastardized objects to be found in flea markets and yard sales everywhere.
Flat Earth Society?
I agree with you totally Luke.
Golf is supposed to be difficult
You have to put some time in your swing (not money)
These screws in drivers/woods/irons/putters should be forbidden.
On the driving range it’s like “ooh i’m hitting a slice today, how will i solve this problem” => screwdriver – add more draw => slice resolved.
That is not about golf, that’s more about plumbing. Standing on a rainy day on the driving range for hours solving that slice, that’s what golf is all about.
Gentlemen,
We all know that no matter what changes that are made to a golf club head, the most skilled golfer will always win. This game is much more than a club(s). It is a game of power and finesse. If one tweaks his club to much, this can result in a loss of touch, thus resulting in lower scores. The establishment of right shaft for a golf club is what is paramount to good golf.
Pointless-getting a little tired of the adjustability nonsense. What next, adjustable grip taciness?
I agree that equipment can influence the game, witness Bowling.. I have been a 215 plus bowler for 40years. In the last 15-20 years equipment has driven the game, almost into the gutter. Participation has dropped to a all time low. I believe this is because the game has gotten too easy.
I think bowling has a few more issue then just the game becoming to easy.
Ben Hogan just rolled over in his grave
& Trevino is still laughing all the way to the bank !
You can obtain all the gimmicks/aids you can in golf and still find that you need to learn how to be a good ball striker and/or be able to follow thru in your stroke. Otherwise why do all the pro’s have coach’s? I am a moderate golfer and have all the latest in technology/clubs but still find I must take lessons and practice. And even after all that I keep making mistakes. Even a magician must practice and take lessons.
Can you say gimmick? Hopefully, this idea never comes to pass.
Let’s just play golf!
For all you purists (still playing blades): The adjustable clubs are increasingly popular. So, many of us buy them and play better. They also teach one about the importance of weighting, loft/ lie and other basic concepts. Of course this is free enterprise in action and golf companies making a buck, but I appreciate the thought and increasing options. Unfortunately, for the purists, these clubs do help.
Why don’t we go the whole hog and have remote controlled golf balls that will give you a hole in one every time. I will tell you why, because the game of golf is much more than having the club or ball do everything for you. Golf is about learning, skill and most of all FUN!
This is rediculous. I myself play a split set of titleist mb’s and cb’s, but this is over the top adjustability. That said, I don’t have any beef with adjustable drivers though.
It doesn’t seem like most get the point. The driver, fairway woods and some hybrids are adjustable. Nike is securing patents to provide them an advantage in the future. There are other things that can be done with this besides adjustability. An example is being able to switch out a club face that has worn down and no longer has the grooves it used to. Or switching from V to U grooves when not playing competitions which some recreational golfers prefer.
I don’t mind club manufacturers taking out patents. Without them many golfers would not be getting the kind of yardage and larger sweet spots found in today’s equipment. Many of you are right that most people don’t take the time to develop a decent golf swing. This was pointed out in old Warner Brothers movies of Bobby Jones. However, I don’t particularly care if people don’t want to take the time to develop a good swing. It gives others a competitive advantage so if they want to try and buy a better game it will only get them so far and that is going to be a mediocre golfer.
