MyGolfSpy’s 1st Seasonal Golf Apparel Buyer’s Guide

In case you missed the introduction to this new exciting feature, my name is KaraKoo.  Each season, I will be Your Personal Golf Apparel Stylist”, and will present 10 complete great looking golf outfits to prepare you for yet another season of golf with your buddies.

I will share two choices each, for 5 different styles of golfers: Bold, Classic, Trendy, Athletic and Traditional.  Or, for those of you ready to jump out of your comfort zone and be a little more versatile, which I strongly recommend, there will be several options to consider.  You will be able to preview images of these options on a model from every angle so you don’t have to try it on.  Plus, you can click to immediately buy these entire outfits from our online retail partner FairwayStyles.com, without ever having to go out and shop.

Entire fabulous outfit choices to fit your style, handed to you each season, and the ability to purchase these outfits from home.  I know…it seems too good to be true…but it’s not.  It is officially time to stock up on some fresh, new winter golf apparel.  Let’s start scrolling…

Solving A Simple Problem:

Shopping for golf clothes in stores or online simply doesn’t work for most guys. It simply takes too much time, too much energy and there are too many choices. It’s overwhelming.  Now, we will do the work, we will find your style and we will make it easy!

Bold

You don’t have to wear crazy in-your-face color all the time, but a little color in the closet should be considered necessary.  Not every guy can pull off a bold look, but if you have a confident and fun personality, and you are not afraid to try something daring and different, this is your zone.  Be prepared to be noticed.

Bold Look 1

Bold Look 1 pairs a basic Travis Mathew polo with a dynamic pair of Abacus plaid paints and an Abacus vest that screams, “Caution, I might be too much to handle, or I might be just the excitement you are looking for!”

Bold Look 2

Bold Look 2 is a mix of Puma and Sligo Wear, worn by two of the most noteworthy guys on the PGA Tour when it comes to style and fashion, Rickie Fowler and Graham DeLaet.  Their golf game isn’t too shabby either, so you might take note.

Classic

Not to be confused with traditional looks, the classic style consists of elements that continue to remind us of the country club lifestyle.  Kelly green & navy, rich colors such as burgundy and the everlasting argyle print.  Anyone can pull off a classic look.  Fashion labels that like to push the bar to increasingly new heights will question our loyalty to heritage pieces, but, why fix what will never be broken?

Billy Horschel was one of the best dressed golfers on the PGA Tour in 2013, representing the Ralph Lauren RLX line in perfectly classic style.  Horschel demonstrated that primary colors look fantastic with a nice pair of brown golf shoes and matching brown belt.

Classic Look 1 showcases a top and matching sweater by A|U|R and Nike Golf pants.

Athletic

Was your first thought when you saw the outfits for the athletic look below, “Umm are we sure these are sporty and athletic?  Aren’t they more bold?”  Good.  I am pushing your comfort level here.  Typically guys that go for the standard adidas or Nike polo and tech fabric pants, are actually falling into the new “traditional” or as I like to refer to it, “plain” category.  Hey athletic guy!  I know you can step it up another notch.

Add a bit of fresh, sporty color and a touch (I said a touch) of a well-designed pattern to your polo, but feel free to still grab for those high-performance pants.

Athletic Look 1

Athletic Look 1 may at first seem more like spring with the neon green Abacus polo and gray Nike golf tech pants.  However, when topped off with one of my favorite jackets of the season, the Abacus Tiverton Wind Jacket, it is a fun fall/winter look!

Athletic Look 2

Athletic Look 2 is one of the best Oakley combos I have seen from them in 2013.  Bubba Watson had to wear some pretty awful shirts on the course this year, so I started to think Oakley was not capable of greatness.  Yet, this unique wine colored polo with complimentary jacket won me over.

Trendy

I say trendy, you say “Travis Mathew.”  Look, I don’t decide what is trendy, I just sit back and observe.  Truth be told, I am not a huge Travis Mathew fan.  However, when athletes and other celebrities hit the golf course in Travis Mathew,  the weekend golfer seems to follow along.  That’s just how it works.  To be fair, the label has an incredible marketing plan (note to all you entrepreneurs out there) and it is working.

I will also use this category to feature designers and pieces you might not consider, or see in your local golf retailer.  If anyone is willing to try something new and hot it is you trendy fellows right?  Good for you!

Trendy Look 1

Trendy Look 1 is so smooth.  I have to be totally transparent and give this look my vote for “Oh yeah, if I saw a guy wearing this on the golf course I would totally look twice!”  Everyone’s favorite Travis Mathew,  paired with the ever fabulous J. Lindeberg and topped off with a sharp Hollas jacket.  Do not overlook the statement this Matte Grey belt makes.  It is a must buy for this look.

Trendy Look 2

Trendy Look 2 hails from the collection of not only one of my favorite golfers, but also one of the most striking dressers on tour, Graeme McDowell.  G-Mac by Kartel had me turning my head more times this season than any other label.  Give it a try.

Traditional

Here is where we really begin to develop our trust, because I am going tell you flat out that this is my least favorite category of golf apparel.  It almost pained me (ok it pained me) to make these selections for you.  However, I do realize that it may take a while for me to convince you to experiment with your style and try something new.  That’s ok, I will be here to keep encouraging you.  The fact is, you are not alone.  The market shows that traditional brands more than dominate.  All that means to me is that I have a LOT of you to convince to step out of your comfort zone.  These options are honestly not super by-the-book traditional, but they were as far as I was willing to compromise.

Traditional Look 1

Traditional Look 1 comes from the Nike Tiger Woods collection.  Nice shade of blue paired with gray pants to pick up on the gray accents in the polo.  Grab a simple Nike TW pullover and head to the golf course.  This selection is for all you WWTD (What Would Tiger Do) guys.  Though, I will never condone you wearing a white belt.

Traditional1-1

Traditional1-2Traditional1-3

Traditional1-4Traditional1-Outerwear

Traditional Look 2

Traditional Look 2 finally offers you a pair of khaki pants and a basic cotton polo.  Navy is safe and looks nice on everyone so try this Linksoul version with flat-front adidas khaki pants and a nice Oakley jacket that doubles as a vest for a warmer day.

For several years, the Nacional and Metropolitano championships were played separately. The Nacional was a 1-group championship, of which the six best teams would be eligible to take part in the Metropolitano next year. It would be until 1985 that Argentina soccer would hold this structure, after which the Nacional became the main championship.

this is a great feature! i always said if you look good, you feel good, you play good. (i know its bad grammar) i like the idea of multiple looks for each type. i do agree that golfwear has gotten too expensive, but you can take these cues and find similar looks at any store you choose.
2 suggestions- 1. bump the release dates up a bit, maybe a month or two- “winter” golf
in Minnesota is played in October and November warmer climes can take
. take the looks and plan ahead.
      2. cut down on the use of the word “fabulous”, lol. HEEYYY!!

Great idea… Keep up the great work. …dont let the negative people steel your joy, those who have no innovative ideas feel obligated to shoot down the great thinking of others who do! Just keep your eyes toward the goal of obtaining your dreams. You will get there, and when you do the nay sayers will be the first ones to say, I’ve loved your ideas all along!

First off, thanks Kara Koo for putting in the time to write this article. I think it will help save some golfers time and some spouses time shopping for Christmas presents even. I really liked a couple of the sweater options 1) Hollas color block and 2) Puma 1/4zip.

Now to all of you complaining about price point. I don’t get why you don’t see that she’s laying out the ensemble with what she has access to, and you have the option of buying it at Fairway Styles. She’s not holding you hostage and forcing you to get it from there. I can’t afford a $300 outfit either but I would take one item I really like and tweak with what’s in my closet to mimic Kara’s ideas. Or find something similar, maybe different brands for possibly half the price.

It’s a Style GUIDE people, don’t take it so literally! They’re suggestions not must-haves (I’m not a fan of some of the outfits but see where I could make them my own).

First. It is McIlroy. Second. No. I have not selected outfits for either of those two, Rory has been looking far too plain for my liking so I would never want anyone to think I had a part in that. Third. I HAVE done consulting work for a few guys on tour. They trust me and have confidence in my eye for what looks good on the course. Fourth. Shame about Halloween passing isn’t it? Enlighten me as to what clowns do the other days of the year?? Thanks for reading.

Keep up the good work Kara , in the main this is a well humoured site with intelligent feedback from the golf spy friends but there’s always one!! I’ve been playing golf for many years mainly to around scratch but I play every week with friends of different ages and handicaps who love golf for the challenge and the camaraderie . I see myself as a gentleman playing a gentle mans and ladies game. This was instilled in me by watching Greg Norman , seve, jack Nicklaus and the great modern players and reading about the players of the past. As well as being great golfers and gents most of them also had STYLE , if you look good you usually feel good . Hope you become a regular fixture, thanks.

I am enjoying seeing the looks that have been chosen. What I would like to comment on are the choices of shoes. I really don’t feel like some of these are fitting to the title. I think ‘Traditional’ and ‘Classic’ would be better suited with different choices. It really changes the look in my opinion. I understand that they are not available at Fairway Styles but, if you are trying to put those looks together it would create the look regardless of where they can be purchased. It feels a little to much like a Fairway Styles add without going outside what they offer. Just a thought.

But give it a try. I dont care if its work clothes or golf clothes.
Keep up the good work and if you can pass aling a deal, all the better.

As an attractive 47 year old woman, I must say that I find nothing more appealing than a well dressed man on the golf course. I understand that these exact outfits from this particular retailor may not be for everybody, though how about using the combos as a “template” to give those that could use the assistance an idea of what looks good?

To nitpick both Kara and MGS, well, I think that you’re losing sight of the purpose of the thread. I see a lot of negative comments from people who I don’t recall seeing many other posts from and I can’t help but wonder if your comments are just made out of mean spiritness versus making sincere suggestions so that they can improve the thread.

I think that it is wonderfully done and Guys, believe me, whether you’re married or not, women still notice a sharp dressed man, lol.

I think there are some great outfits here. I won’t be looking to buy complete outfits but maybe purchasing one additional piece here and there would serve to complement what I have already. I do prefer Shark and Izod shirts and have found wicked deals on these at Macy’s. If you apply some common sense then you dont have to pay out the arse…buy summer wear in the fall and winter stuff in January or February when they are clearing inventory for spring. Simple.

It would be neat to see some models of different shapes, sizes…and dare I say, skin color. MyGolfSpy is known for bucking the status quo so lets see how guys with 38 in waists look in lime green pants LOL. Nice start though…I much prefer to see what clothes look like on a real person.

I think the NIke vest that can also attach arms is cool.

Mr. Goodman, I commend you for your words. Though I took the game up in my twenties, I have been around the game most of my life because my father was very involved, both as a player, and board member at our club. Though our club still adheres to a dress code that doesn’t allow cargo shorts, jeans or hats being worn backwards, I am amazed when I join my friends on a public course, by the dress and conduct that I have witnessed.

I understand that we want to grow the game, though it’s a shame that the traditions, customs & behavior that have long made this a “Gentleman’s game,” have gone by the wayside in many areas.

What is wrong with cargo shorts? When I play i prefer to be comfortable, especially if it is hot.

      JOEL GOODMAN

There is nothing “wrong” with cargo shorts. They are just inappropriate apparell for the golf course. I doubt that one would wear blue jeans and a jacket on the tennis court. Does not mean the item is “wrong”. It means it isn;t “correct”..Sort of like the morons that wear their hats in a restaurant while having dinner. It has to do with decorum, proper manners, respect for others and a sense of appropriate behavior and dress..You would not fart loudly in the middle of a wedding ceremony, would you???? Well maybe if cargo shorts are your thing, you might………..

Well, I *am* offended. If your behavior in this comment section is indicative of how a “gentlemen” behaves, then quite bluntly put, I do not care to be one. So far in these comments alone you have:

      1. Shouted in an impolite manner.
      2. Been rude to a woman.
      3. Exhibited blatant homophobic behavior.
      4. Been rude to strangers.
      5. Exhibited a holier/better than thou status based upon your work experience (and the turned around and named brands with histories of using child labor in China)

Being a southern bred lad, I will categorically tell you that based upon your behavior here, you are no “gentleman”. Your behavior thus far would be far better categorized as “crotchety old fart with a chip on his shoulder”. You are offensive, and the fact that you don’t care about whom you offend clearly indicates that you left “gentlemanly behavior” a long long time ago.

I see regularly see youth players on the course that show more respect and gentile behavior than you have exhibited here, so when it comes to calling other people pigs, perhaps you should stop and take a look in the mirror sir.

This is not a community that suffers this behavior kindly, and in the future, I would hope that you will take the time filter your comments of the most abrasive parts, and perhaps learn how to use the Caps Lock key on your keyboard.

Mornin Bro, I hope that your weather’s warmer than ours up here, lol!

I’m by no means inserting myself into this discussion, though I do recall from Joel’s prior posts that his use of the caps are due to vision limitations.

Me, on the other hand, CAPS ON, double posts and upside down pictures, well you’ve seen my “work,” lol.

The whole all caps thing is a complete cop out. If he has vision issues, every modern operating system has significant function to address it. In Window ever since XP, you can adjust the system to use “Large Fonts”, which essentially makes everything 150% larger on the screen. On a Mac, there are functions in place to allow you to zoom into a part of the screen at ANY time.

As any proper gentleman knows, courtesy is the foundation of a gentile society. Laziness and personal inconvenience are not excuses for a gentleman. We hold doors for others even when it is inconvenient. We say ma’am and sir, even when the people we are talking to have shown no inclination to respond in kind. When describing a a group, we place others before ourselves ( as in the staff at MGS and I, not the common me and the staff at MGS ).

But I don’t need to lecture you RP on being a gentleman, you already know all this stuff :). I know it is a lost art, but we lead by example, and unfortunately, Joel has failed miserably on the example portion in this thread, and in so doing, he has brought me down to his level. I failed at being a gentleman by not walking away from his behavior.

      RP Jacobs II

I just learned something regarding size, fonts, etc. I just figured that peeps hadda use caps. Thanks!

Regarding the gentlemanly behavior, well, you have a long way to go to hit where I’ve been ;)

You posts and responses, regardless of content, including these, have always taken the “high road.” Sometimes things must be said, and hopefully understood, and hopefully the appropriate tone is used.

      You, have always been appropriate.

Thanks, but you should see the things I type out and then hit ‘Cancel’ on. :-)

This is subject that really hits a raw nerve with me, because I spend a lot of time and effort getting the people around me to “act with respect”. Training support people to be polite & respectful is hard, particularly when so few of them live it outside of the workplace, and barely within.

It only takes a little disrespect to undo it all. People usually only recall the bad. The very good gets lost in the shuffle.

I’ll accomodate the hurt feelings of the “rules makers” and use lower case letters for their benefit. When I offend them I want it to be with content not form. Seems as if my revulsion at deviant sexual behavior has them a bit miffed also..All I can say to that is “tough shit” a queer is a queer and I do not want to be near………

Well, excuse the veer OT, though we’ve brought some civility back into this portion of the thread so WTH, lol. I couldn’t agree with ya more. Though my initial work and my final work in a client corporation is spent in the executive suite/board room, everything in between is spent with the support/administrative peeps to the mid/upper mid-level mgt that is responsible for strategic/tactical implementation.

Over the years the one truism that I have taken away from my work is that it is very, very difficult, no strike that, it’s impossible, long term, to ask behavior of others when it was never shown/exhibited to them. Initially, Sr. Mgt is surprised by my initial words because if they know me or know of me/my work, I am known as anything but “soft,” yet this is the word that I hear most often, lol.

I just feel that it’s impossible to influence behavior if it’s a case of, “Do as I say, not as I do,” especially when the heat gets turned up and emotions come into play. I was fortunate in that when a few of my mentors, whose tone and words were similar to Mr. Goodman’s, spoke to me, I could separate the tone/words from the message. Many cannot.

And this isn’t a good or bad thing. It’s just a fact.

So while I believe that Mr. Goodman has much to offer the younger readers, I just don’t know if they can see the forest for the trees, especially when the trees are torched.

Ah well, I’ve taken us far enough off course.

I do think I’m gonna try a pair of tight plaid slacks next year.

Maybe a black watch pattern. I have a pair that I wear with a blazer and they’re sharp.

      HaHa, I’m branchin out.

Well, in terms of fashion forward (or perhaps, fashion backwards) I have been trying to decided if my Utilikilt would be appropriate :) for St. Patty’s Day event this year.

      http://www.utilikilts.com/shop/mocker-colors.html

      RP Jacobs II

LMAO, #1, I think that those kilts are cool as hell. JB’s(JohnBarry) posted a few that look great, at least on him, lol. I definitely think that kilts are model/individual sensitive, lol. #2, I’m on our club’s golf board and last year we had to vote on these cuz those in favor of cargo shorts claimed that these were more casual, hence, should not be allowed, or if they were, cargos should be approved for wear.

The kilts were approved for the St. Paddy’s event/swat, lol.

Also, and in fact, I wore these shorts to this particular meeting, and I’m speaking of a “dress” pair of cargo shorts, if there is such a thing. They are beautiful and I got a pair in navy and black. The lower pockets have no button on them so the pocket flap is pressed down and from 10-15′ in front, you couldn’t tell that they are cargo shorts.

They are 30% silk/60% poly & 10% wool. And they have a 1/2″ cuff. Seriously, they’re sharp as hell. And I’m not allowed to wear em, though I must say that I play in slacks, however I do wear Bermudas on the porch in the summer time, though these shorts would not be allowed on the porch, as bottom line, they’re classified as cargo shorts.

I presented that “dress” cargos be allowed, however the attorney on the board said that that would open the door as to what constituted “dress,” so they got voted down 6-3.

LMAO, cuz after the vote one of the older members said I’m getting more “liberal” as I age, unlike most people, lol

Your nonsensical offense at upper case letters is childish at best. By whose authority is the size and case of letters of import? The message is what is important. If I have offended any lady on this forum, I sincerely apologise. I was not aware that I had done so. For those who feel my words abour sexual deviants is hurtful, sorry, but they are deviants, queers and whatever else society chooses to call them. I find their behavior to be abhorent and against all religious teachings in the BIBLE. I have little knowledge of the Koran and it may bless butt babies there, as well as camel fornicators, but my beliefs find that wrong. Judgemental? You can bet your ass, but my kind of man has nothing but scorn for queers, deviants, Muslims and other human waste. Might I suggest, “Dru”, that you be a real man and not hide behind some psuedonym and let us know who you really are. Also if so inclined please let us know who appointed you arbiter of this forum and your credentials–degrees, honors, etc.

First off, Joel, let me introduce myself properly. I am Dru_ from the forums, and use that pseudonym because the folks that inhabit these parts would know me and connect the two. If you spent any time there, you would know that I do tend to spend a good amount of time around these parts. I am in no way hiding my identity here, and should you wish, you are welcome look me up over in the forums. However, since you do not seem so inclined, I’ll help you out. My name is in fact Dru ( short form of Andrew, named after a saint, I however, am anything but ).

You wish to know my credentials. They are simple. I am a Nerd, a Father, a Husband, a business owner, an avid golfer, and owner/operator of several online forums, though this is not one of them. Over 20+ years of managing online communities, there is one thing I have learned, and that is that online, allowing disrespect to get rooted is like putting cyanide in the water supply. Nothing will kill a community faster. As for my degrees, I highly doubt they are relevant, but I my background is accounting and law.

I should also note that while I am in fact not gay, I find bigoted behavior, be it racial, gender, economic, or sexual orientation offensive in the extreme. It is disrespectful. You are offended by their behavior, allow us to be offended by yours. You note that the Bible states that it is deviant and abhorrent ( for the record both words have their roots in Latin, not Aramaic which the old testament was largely translated from ). The usual citations here are from Leviticus and Romans, and though these sections *could* be construed to mean what you think they do, like most things in the bible, they could have other meanings. Either way, this is not the venue for that discussion, and there are far more eloquent speakers on the subject than I. We can agree to disagree, as gentlemen should.

As for the all capitals being shouting. This is, unfortunately simply the reality of spending any time in internet communities and is among the very first thing that we learn when we engage in any internet community. All capitals is shouting. If you were truly unaware of that connotation, then I will quite happily apologize, and chalk it up to learning something new for you today. As I noted, if vision is truly an issue, the by all means jump in the forum and look me up, I will happily walk you through settings on your computer that will make it far more pleasant for you to read and use.

Regarding ladies you offended? my wife who often reads over my shoulder asked out loud we nasty people like you are allowed to post. I believe that qualifies as offended. I cannot speak for Kara, but I would be surprised if the tone and context of your posts didn’t offer up offense as they read as borderline personal attacks upon her taste, writing and fashion sense.

And finally, you asked by whose authority I raised these issues. Well, that sir is an excellent question which I will simply respond to with a question, that I hope provides the insight you are seeking. The question is this. As a gentleman, is it not the responsibility of any gentleman to correct and instruct a new member of a community in the expected behaviors within a community, as well to call out any gentleman that is displaying behavior that is not up the standards of gentile behavior?

      Respecfully,
      Dru

      Wow…
I posted my comments because I believe that people act like they dress. Just because you spent 200 dollars on a pair of jeans does not make it right or entitle you to be better. Too many times I see golfers wearing cargo pants or shorts to a golf course. How about wearing a baseball cap indoors or better yet still have a sticker on the bill of the cap. I see young men/boys not opening the door for a lady or opening the car door for their Significant other (SO). I mean really in the day of age of being PC (Politicly correct) some folks went over the top. Golf is about being true to yourself. Enjoying yourself and having fun and playing with new friends and old. This is not about a 2 handicap or 20 handicap. Dress for success and look the part. If you came in for interview wearing baggy pants and jacket that you pulled from a 5/10 store I hope that you are not expecting to get the job.

Dress and act the part. My father was born in the great depression and fought in WW2. My father was my hero and inspiration. He was a man of few words but one of his golden rules was dress the best you can and treat people like you want to be treated. Look the part and act the part of being a gentleman. Golf is about respect, trust, passion and friendships.

Ok, I will comment. Except for the Halloween/Deer Hunter/Highway worker vest and the black belt and brown shoe combo I think most of them look pretty good. I admit that I buy solid pants and shorts mostly because they limit the shirts you can wear. I also do not buy “outfits” I buy pants and shirts and shoes etc. and assemble “outfits” in the closet when I pick them out.

In the “Traditional Look 2” the pocket is on the wrong side of the shirt. That would seem weird to me, however, I am not a pocket on the shirt kind of guy.

PROPERLY TAILORED GOLF SLACKS WORN BY MANY TOUR PLAYERS, ARE LONGER IN THE BACK BY 1/2 INCH THAN THE FRONT AND DO NOT BREAK. MANY ALSO HAVE A SIDE NOTCH TO MAKE THE TROUSERS HANG STRAIGHTER. Even if these suggestions are not specifically what you want to see or are in your budget, they still give ideas of different looks options. You can find something similar in other places if you choose. But blasting away because it wasn’t exactly what you may have wanted to see is classless and cowardly when it comes down to it.

Why are you calling this a “review?” It’s pics of clothes, on a model whose dimensions aren’t given, and who desperately needs a tailor for his pants. All that fabric gathered at the knee? You would NEVER see that on a model with clothes that fit. How do the lengths run? Are they true? Is the waist size on any of the pants actually measured side-to-side, or is it vanity sizing? If you’re going to try this, at least give the pertinent info. Not pics of ill-fitting clothing on a model of generic size.

      I beg to differ…

“2. Other Golf Apparel Reviews – typically reviews online for apparel reviews consist of one piece of clothing by one brand. Companies will send you a shirt or pair of pants. So the reviewer generally takes pictures of that piece and shows up close pictures of the threading, buttons, etc. They never show the actual outfit on a golfer to show how it actually fits. So we wanted to actually “help” golfers by not only showing the clothes on someone but also show complete outfits. Because, seeing one item like other golf reviews at the end of the day does not really help you decide what that one piece would look like with pants, etc. Think a regular website (vs) Zappos. They do a great job of showing a more complete picture of the clothing. That is what we are trying to achieve for you guys.”

OTHER golf apparel reviews means, by definition, this is a review. There is no other way to read this.

Though I agree with Many of the guys above me most of the time, like TxGolfJunkie, I definitely care about what I step on the first tee in. Call me vain, though I just prefer my look to match my game.

Regarding a lot of the suggestions, many good points however I tend to read an article, especially fashion, to see what I can take out of it. Not neccesarilly WHERE to buy it, cuz I have my shops, stores & though I’ve never purchased clothes online, I still try to get style ideas from the article, and this article has plenty. I like to see WHAT is being worn.

I really like the Classic, Traditional and amazingly, because I would be described as anything but trendy, however I really like the Trendy combos. Very nicely done.

The only sugestion that I might make is that if you are going to give two outfits, make one for the moderate winter look, and the other for those of us that are wearing wind shirts, sweaters & wind vests now.

There are a lot of people hating on this article right now and I don’t quite understand it… I don’t actually like any of the outfits here, but I see the value-add of an article like this. Also, I really can’t stand people who say things like: “$$$ dollars for a golf outfit?!?!?! I’ll spend my money on equipment and greens fees…I’m not rich!” This just strikes me as sour grapes. There’s nothing wrong with looking good on the golf course… you don’t have to be scratch to wear a white belt… and sometimes your outfit can imbue some added self-confidence which as we all know, isn’t going to hurt your game any… quite the opposite. In fact, i’d wager a guess that the clothes you wear have about the same effect on your game as the new latest/greatest club “technology”… which is to say, almost nothing. If you can play, you can play… end of story. So go ahead an swag-out.

I think it’s great, and provides good ideas for those that enjoy wearing stuff on the course with a bit more flair. I don’t have the budget to buy these, but they do work well for me as ideas to build on.

It is tough to find much beyond the basics in pants outside of golf specialty environments, but you can always find really good foundations at places like Eddie Bauer, something like ( yes I own these ).

      http://bit.ly/1czWDJi

But colors change with seasons in fashions, and I know that like most men, I tend to keep colors in rotation well past their ‘stale’ date :-) because they are comfortable, so I like seeing what she has put together here to provide some direction as I do some shopping.

Thanks for the feedback. I am not sure I would recommend Eddie Bauer pants in a golf apparel buyers guide. I am sure they are comfy and the ones you referred to actually look fun for a casual night off the course, however, they are not in the golf apparel industry. In my opinion, standard causal pants do not supply the performance material for playing 18 holes of golf like other, more specialized options. Glad you are seeing value in the use of the guide as an idea generator! Good luck!

Man you guys got your panties in a wad over this article.

Just because these items don’t fit your budget doesn’t mean you have to publicly blast someone over it. And yes, there are guys out there that DO care how they look on a course. Every big amatuer and professional tournament I’ve played in, guys are looking sharp for the most part. How you spend your money in the golf world is up to you, but some guys are content with spending a good dollar on a quality piece of clothing.

I am one of those guys. I do care how I look on the course. I dress aggressively but also age and body shape appropriate. And my motto is if you can beat me, you can dress me. If you don’t want to spend that kind of coin, there are plenty of sites out there that sell amazing stuff (that will last for 2+ seasons) at a cheaper price. BunkerStyles, BudgetGolf, GlobalGolf, RockBottomGolf and TGW are just a few websites that have quality clothing.

I think these style guides are good to go off of but you don’t necessarily have to buy each individual piece from said company. There are so many clothing companies, you can find something similar in your price range.

My only suggestion for these style guides is to break them up into age ranges. Give something for those 35 and younger and something for the older generation.

All in all, hopefully some of these golfers take this to heart.

P.S. I agree with the tall guys that have commented earlier, I wish clothing companies made their shirts longer to stay tucked in.

The more I think about the article, the more it reminds me of a cartoon from the 80’s. Take something like He-Man, the entire cartoon was created just for the purpose of selling toys. This article seems to have been created for the sole purpose of driving traffic and sales to the Fairway Styles website.

I have no problem with a website being a partner and trying to drive sales to them, but if this was truly an MGS article those links should point to the site with the best price on each article of clothing, not to the place that the writer has partnered with that also happens to have pretty much everything at MSRP and doesn’t reflect the price you could pay if you searched around a little bit more.

I really do appreciate what you are trying to do, but if you really want to help us (the readers) out then give some budget recommendations, and actually put in winter clothes for the winter buyers guide. As someone already mentioned short sleeves aren’t really practical for many of us playing winter golf and I need more than a light track jacket to keep warm when I’m golfing in 30-40° weather.

X – Just read your reply above and you make some great points. And I do realize you guys aren’t getting paid for this article in any way, shape, or form. In the past though you’ve always linked to the place with the best deal on whatever it is, or the manufacturers website as a default. I think that would go over better here than a website the author has already said she is a partner with. I realize there is nothing improper going on, but the perception is there.

I love that you guys are trying new things and there nothing wrong with the article, it just misses the mark for me.

Don’t completely disagree with your comment, “In the past though you’ve always linked to the place with the best deal on whatever it is…”.

Here is the problem with that:

      1. We wanted all these clothes to be worn by a model so you could see the outfits on. If we were to just go to every website that carries golf apparel show you the best deals we are actually contributing to the one of the problems we are trying to solve. And that’s “Knowing how they fit and what they look like on a human”. Some clothes look great in pictures, but look and feel terrible on you.

      2. This is to help golfers that have issues “seeing” outfits as a whole. Meaning not just “hey these are my go-to pants and this is my go-to shirt, and not because I love them, but basically because I don’t have time or the energy to look for others”. Don’t like anything we show? That’s ok, maybe next time we will. Think the price is too high? Copy and paste the name into Google and see who else carries it cheaper?

      3. Remember this is our first effort, and I commend those that are involved. I think we did a great job on this first effort. Does that mean we won’t improve it by implementing some of your suggestions? No. We are always trying to make the stuff we write useful for you guys.

I love the constructive criticism, helps us get better for you. But shooting down this and not a shitty apparel review that helps you absolutely none, is kind of odd to me.

      hckymeyer

In all honesty I never shot down the others because I didn’t really read through them. I always thought the goal of those articles was more of an introduction to a brand I might not have heard of. I was looking at this one as more of a here is what you should wear. It became more personal and I think that is why there are such varying opinions on it.

When I think of clothes recommendations I want it to be for me, which I realize is impossible in a venue like this.

I’d still love to hear suggestions for those of us in the northern climates, but I have a feeling the season will be over before that happens (winter storm watch for tonight).

Again I appreciate the effort and idea, but it just missed the mark of what I was hoping it would be. Need more shoe selections, hats, and actual warm clothes :)

      mygolfspy

My point exactly: You and others don’t shoot down the OTHERS, which are much more low quality work for the consumer. And you are shooting down this, which actually tries to solve the problem of the other more simple and less useful type reviews.

You say we missed the mark with you, which I respect. But then if you are interested in helping us deliver something that DOES hit the mark with you, could you please tell us what your vision of that WOULD be?

Wouldn’t let me reply to the last one, but I would love to see more accessories included and a wider/wilder variety (shoes, hats, belts). Then maybe a section based on climate, something for the colder and something for the warmer areas of the country. Then maybe one standard price outfit and one budget outfit.

Around $550-$600 in one outfit to go play golf??? And that’s before you pay for the round! I buy shirts, pants, shorts, pullovers for far less than that that look just as good. Go to Belk and check out the PGA Tour brand name and they have great sales on their golf apparel all the time! I love golf and play 3-4 times a week and the local country club, but your prices are way ‘out of bounds’. I like to look good on the course, but I can do it for far less in price such as in the neighborhood of $235 +/-. I’m not rich!

Each of these outfits were not all in the price range you mentioned. Bold 2 = $335, Trendy 1 = $493, Traditional 2 = $373 for a few examples. The guide is also to be used as an idea file for what is new and hot on the market. I can’t afford everything displayed in Vogue Magazine, but I get lots of great ideas to try and replicate when I am out shopping. Congrats on having an appreciation for looking good on the course!

You really gave me something to shop for. I found the AUR S CAFÉ DIAGONAL INSERT POLO – TWILIGHT shirt at BudgetGolf.com and it’s not a copy…it’s the very same shirt for
$29.99. Pays to shop around. I would have never looked for this shirt if it hadn’t been for you. Thank you VERY much!

Let me try and address all your concerns here:

      1. Selling Out – This has nothing to do with “selling out”, this had to do with something readers like yourself expressed was an issue with online golf apparel reviews. So we tried to address it by solving that problem.

      2. That is what we are trying to achieve for you guys.

      3. Price – we chose to go with one retailer so if you DO decide to buy a complete outfit that you liked you would be able to get it all from one place. Once again just trying to make it as easy as possible. IS pricing on some of these items cheaper at other retailers. Yes, I checked and some are. But this does not mean that if you do find an outfit that you can’t buy it somewhere else.

      4. Short Sleeves For Winter – we are trying to cover the vast majority of golfers. Which means most of them who are still playing golf in the winter are not playing in sub-freezing temps. Could we add some long sleeves and compression shirts? Of course, but once again compression shirts generally go under clothing. Long sleeves might be added in a future guide as an additional option.

      5. A Stylist For Golf Apparel? – one comment spoke about the fact that do we really need this. And I would say you don’t NEED it but it is something people ask for, so once again we tried to provide you with BETTER content when it came to apparel compared to traditional apparel reviews. Also, golf style is huge right now and there are more options then ever before. Which means IMO that yes people need it (too many options) and golfers want it (or it would not be this popular).

Like I have said before this is a “Proof Of Concept” type of article. This is something golfers complained about and said they would like, so we tried to provide it. If you guys don’t like it maybe we re-consider. But just because something might not work does not mean you shouldn’t try it. And once again, we just tried it for you, not us. We are not making money (not a single dime) on this post.

Some just have to complain about something. If this isn’t for you then don’t bother with it. I think its a great idea for people who are a little challenged with putting together an outfit.
Know one is saying you have to buy from Fairway Styles, its just an option to make it easier to find. People should take this as more of a base line to what may look good together. Maybe you want to shop at an off brand store? Fine, take what you see and try to match it up the best you can if you can’t afford to shop at certain places.
Thanks for the idea and work it took to put this together….

I know you put alot of work into this, but all I can think as I go through it “are there really golfers out there that care this much about their attire?” Because I don’t know any, and I don’t know any that pay that kind of money for thier clothes either, at least not across the board. We’ve all got a nice shirt or two I guess, and a favorite pair of shoes, but no one has “outfits”.

I guess as is this is pretty much just the equivalent of a Nordstrom’s catalog for golf. Somewhat interesting but apparently I am not the audience you are seeking! I hope that audience appreciates all your effort though!

I read the caption and thought this might be about actual winter clothing options, but instead it’s about far too expensive clothing, and pretty much all the outfits are shown with short sleeve shirts. Sorry but that won’t work in New England in the winter. How about a follow up showing cold compression shirts, long sleeves polos, winter gloves and a hat for starters (like the photo shows)?

I like your combos here. they’re not way out there styles. I especially like the GMac stuff. Here’s my problem with this though. The places where I play golf are 99.99% male. I don’t dress nice for males. The only female I run into is the cart girl and I’m almost old enough to be her father so that hook up ain’t happening. I’m looking for comfort over style in my golf clothes which is why most of my clothes are slightly baggy so I can swing. The stuff you hated is the stuff i buy, I LOVE Linksoul shirts and shorts. I just wish they made pants. The old Ashworth Dewsweeper pants were the best golf pants ever made.

While I appreciate the effort here, I’m more in line with Gumby’s thinking. Besides, I don’t have to spend $90 on a shirt to look good.

Scott also has a point. I can’t fault anyone here either, though, because every clothes retailer seems to use guys that are 5’10”-ish and 150lbs.

But again, it’s obvious a lot of effort went into this. It shouldn’t take but a couple of tweaks and this idea is golden.

I always like to feel good when playing. I also like Lilac and Aristo 18 pants. The issue I have is I am 6’4 and 210 with athletic build. Wearing Khakis is so boring but it is hard to find fit and fashion. Everything is made for short guys… Do not forget us tall guys that need more then 32 or 34 length. A little longer shirt in the tail to keep it tucked in. Sleeves that do not look like muscle shirts. Shoulders that look fitted but not snug. Help us out as well. Your model looks like he is 5’10 or shorter.
