Ok so ill wait till the real things come out but first impressions are yuck…and they look cheap.

And are they going to be any different than the x – 22 irons because thats what they look like just with a different color and name.

Well the cavity weighting is different for sure. Other then that right now the rumor is that there will be 2 different models. One that is cast and one that is forged.

Hmmmm…..I must say that these are the ugliest irons I have ever seen. If they did the job and hit the ball straight I would play them, but they are fugly.

In regards to looks I would have to agree with you CJ.

The Diablo head design appears to be consistent with the x series of heads just a little more angular.Because of the square lines of the clubhead it would allow an easier square to square set up & result in a more consistent shot. The deep cavity back & thinner face also gives you a better feel & larger sweet spot. This “may” eventually lead to an increase in handicap as the new head design tends to hide badly hit shots.

irons look the same as callaway legacy but with different badge -poss marketed for europe

the legacy are forged (at least thats what they state on club head )

Comment by mygolfspy

October 6th, 2009 at 6:17 am

There will be a forged model of these as James.

these are indeed the u.s. version of the legacy which was only made available in limited quantity overseas. a friend who is a euro-pro sent me a set of legacy’s in april and i’ve played them ever since. i can tell you the forged version is a players iron which might be limited in the u.s.due to cost /demand. i feel the diablo name cheepens this product but its just a “tweener” line until this time next year when the x-24 is introduced.

Actually the “Diablo” are almost exact replicas of the Legacy irons but these “Diablo Edge” irons are different.

Looks like the Taylormade irons that came out a few years ago.

I’ll stick with my BB Fusions

October 6th, 2009 at 8:35 am

I don’t think they’re horrible looking, but they definitely look like “tweeners” to hold Callaway fans over until next year (great insight fsu#21). Seeing how the Diablo drivers and fairway woods have sold decently for Callaway, I’m sure these irons are just an attempt to capitalize on the moderate success of the brand and utilize a European design in the States. I think the x22 pros are the best cast irons Callaway has ever made in terms of both look and performance.

Comment by mygolfspy

October 6th, 2009 at 11:01 am

Yeah the X-22 Pro Series are a good cast iron…so was the X-12 Pro Series for the average golfer. But Callaway cannot afford to have a “Tweener” with the position they are in right now financially. So I cannot imagine they are just sitting on what they expect will be a winner when they release a X-24.

I think they look tacky. Not a callaway fan though-too heavy looking and too much going on. Much prefer a minimalistic beautiful looking Mizuno-now they make good irons.

I would have to agree Matt…I am very surprised at this product launch to say the least.

Ewww super game improvement irons gone bad looks like someone took a hammer and red sharpie to a Nike slingshot iron. Sorry callaway this isn’t the next big thing in golf.

Perhaps I am an “Oldline Purist”, but I sure as hell would not trade my set of TA 845S Silver Scot blades for a set of these!!, and never my set of Wildon Pro Staff FG-17’s as well!! When you can play to a “Single Digit HDCP. with great vintage clubs, why change??How about that!!

I do see a little bit of resemblance Si. And…yes I do not think this will help their financial problems much.

2010 Callaway Diablo edge are replacing 08/09 Big Bertha irons. They are cast irons for mid to high handicappers. X-22 still in line-up. As a matter of fact 2010 has nothing in line-up called big bertha. Which they had for 20 years. Now its Diablo.

What is an estimate of when these irons would be available in the U.S.?

i do not like the whole “diablo” name and the ugly graphics on the head. but if they look good from address and perform well, the cavity look does not matter as much. i hope they look a bit cleaner at address than the last big bertha iron set. companies should look into making better looking SGi and GI irons, like wilson staff DI9 and the mizuno mx-200 and mx-100 iron sets.

Had the Callaway rep in on Wednesday who was extolling the virtues of the design of the new edge range… He seemed to think that the new technology was a step forward… Interestingly, he seemed to think that Callaway are scrapping the X range after the 22’s and that the Diablo range will be their new Big Bertha’s, they want a Diablo family. The new tour versions of the woods were exeptional looking though, not Callaway like at all, more like old 300 series TM’s or 975D shape. We’ll see what happens with them, but to be honest I’m more interested in the new Nike equipment than the Callaway stuff, even if Tiger seems to be trying to spoil everything Nike have done in the last few years.

WHATS THAT SOUND? ELY ROLLING OVER IN HIS GRAVE!! In my opinion the other big boys on the block “taylor made, titliest, nike etc” have been sizing up callaway for a knockout punch and when callaway makes suspect desicions you might as well start the 10 count. I’ve been with callaway for a while now[PUD] and i too have heard certain rumors, but rather than discontinuing the products that made you, why not challenge the R+D dept to step it up a notch. i mean seriosly they are caught holding a bag full of “I-MIX’S” while taylor made ,nike +titliest/cobra all introduce face control technoligy, WHAT A MISTAKE!! It’s becoming obvious somebody has fallen asleep at the wheel out in Carlsbad.

just in case anybody is interested, we got a hold of a couple diablo edge demo irons and as we hit a few shots out of the lesson bay into the snow filled range sunday morning i could’nt help but think what a CHEAP PIECE OF SHI- this looks like, but like most callaway products it performs well on off center hits and will be a good choice for those looking in the game improvement category. it looks like they will take from ADAMS and offer this in a combo hybrid/iron set. i just think this whole diablo thing is getting out of hand , i mean our opinion was this looks like something you should get at modell’s or wal-mart that comes with 3 woods a putter and a bag all in a big box for $199.99.

What an” intelligent set of comments” from peopIe who are looking at one damn picture. I guess that’s why all of you guys run major golf club companies. I think the Marketing and R&D departments of Callaway understand golfers needs a bit better than you do.
Would it be too much trouble to see how they actually perform before commenting?
Since I doubt none of the comments were from players on tour (any level) most golfers I know (low single digit to 20) don’t give a crap what it looks like or sounds like.
If the equipment lets you hit it further, more accurately, more consistently, more often, then damn the color or shape or size or offset, etc.
Bragging rights do not belong to those who carry blades, it belongs to those who have a lower scorecard !!!!!!

I spent 1.5 hrs. yesterday getting fitted on “TrackMan”. For the last 20 years, I’ve played fitted Titlest clubs. My current clubs were 735CM’s. I tried multiple shafts in multiple heads which included: Titlest, Cobra’s, Ping, R9, Burners, Ideas, X22 and Nikes. The second club that I hit was the Diablo – hit it reasonably straight & long. I discounted the club because of the looks. I typically like the blade or old style look. After hitting a ton of balls with a different combination of heads & shafts with even some even bent on site at the end I went after the Diablo again. Being tired at this point I didn’t think I”d give it a honest test. Low and behold, I hit 4 shots straight & long again. With the 735CM – 6 iron, I averaged 168 yds. at spin rate of 7200 – way to high! The ten shots that I hit with the Diablo averaged 175 yds. and a spin rate of 6300 – way better! Based on the test results I was sold and will put up with the UGLY looks!

Are you reason, Don T.
The Diablo irons are very, very long and they have a delicious touch, I’ve 2 sets: Forged and Edge… 2 options depending of the day! ;-)

I have Callaway Hawkeyes and am looking to finally upgrade. X-20/X-22/Diablo are $400/$700/$700 respectively. I’m a 15 handicapper so forged is out of the question for me. Have been told X-20’s are better than the X-22’s. Hit both the X-22 and Diablo today and liked the feel and distance of the Diablo better. Trying to find a LH X-20 is becoming a challenge, but i want to hear opinions on X-20 vs. X-22 vs. Diablo. Yes i like the price of the X-20 but i’m a value man. I’ll pay more if it provides better value. HELP!!!

As I mentioned previously, I’m a 57 yr. old 7 handicap and was fitted w/TrackMan. I tried all the Callaway club, besides the R9, Burner, all the Pings, Cobra & Titlest irons. The spec’s. from TrackMan waalked me right in to the Diablo Edge. I’ve played with them for about 8 rounds and wouldn’t trade them. I gained 5/7 yds. with 4 – 6 irons and about the same yardage with the 7 on up. (I can hit the 4 about 195 yds. and the 8 about 150 yrds. Off center hits are surprising good compare to my old clubs – Titlesist 735’s. Best investment I’ve made in my game and really think I can get down to a 4 or 5 this year.

I bought the sand through 7 and the 2-5-6 utilities and the FT Tour driver. My cap is 13. I have played five rounds with the clubs – 83-81-81-79-78! Enough said. Oh, and the irons are actually very good looking (better than the pictured iron). As for those of you who are “reviewing” without using the clubs I would suggest analogize that a review by someone who has actually seen the movie is preferable to one by someone who hasn’t.

i went to my local pro about a month ago looking at new club something a bit more forgiving than my x20s. i play of 26 could play off better but not very consistent. anyway had a hit with ap1s, burners, x22s and the diablos and i agree with some that they are not the best looking clubs but after hittings irons was sold on diablos just because they are so easy to it very forgiving and just easy to hit. so if you can get past the looks just have a try you will be surprised

i recently purchased these irons after visiting a local pro golf shop. I hit the x22 and then hit the diablo and i promise you that the diablo for me felt better when i made contact with the ball. It is definitely a good set of clubs.
