Callaway Golf Acquires Toulon Design

Callaway Golf has acquired start-up putter company Toulon Design.

When the alert came through I checked my calendar. April 1st was months ago.

This isn’t a headline we wrote.

This really happened.

Specific terms were not disclosed, but on paper, it’s an odd deal. Smart acquisitions are usually about intellectual property. Dubious ones often boil down to market share. As an 11-month-old infant of a company, Toulon Design doesn’t have much in the way of either.

This one appears to be more about the intangibles.

And by intangibles, I mean Sean Toulon.

sean-toulon

Toulon, who will slide into the role of SVP for Callaway Golf and General Manager of the Odyssey Brand, previously served as Executive Vice President for TaylorMade-adidas Golf before starting his own company.

Alongside the other former TaylorMade guy (Callaway’s Harry Arnett), and others, Toulon played a major role in the explosive growth that made TaylorMade the dominant force in the golf equipment industry. Now he’s joining the company whose emergence has hastened the former’s demise.

Short version – very few know and understand the golf equipment business like Sean Toulon. He’s a huge get.

By bringing in not just a proven putter guy, but a proven golf equipment guy, Callaway must certainly see an opportunity to strengthen its position in the putter category, where it is in a perpetual back and forth with Scotty Cameron for the #1 spot in consumer sales. It’s a classic step on the gas pedal move by an industry leader looking to add separation.

For Toulon, the alliance has the potential to provide the resources to grow the emerging putter business that bears his name and employs his two sons.

On paper, it’s a win-win.

Can it Work?

The two brands, one roof model hasn’t worked particularly well within the golf industry of late, but that probably won’t stop Callaway from trying. This latest go ‘round could manifest itself as something along the lines of Toulon Design by Odyssey.

Odyssey does what it does while occupying the space it always has, leaving the premium milled and custom space to the Toulon brand.

There’s enough separation there where, with the right execution, it could actually work.

Could. We’ll have to see how this plays out.

Twisting the Knife

While the acquisition looks to be straight-up good business, it also sends not-so-subtle two-word message to Callaway’s #1 rival, TaylorMade.

I suspect the move is being felt with the force of a gut punch inside the walls of TaylorMade.

It’s the kind of poetic vengeance that’s inevitable with the rise and fall of companies and the expiration of non-compete clauses. That doesn’t make it any less brutal.

A few weeks ago I checked in with Sean Toulon to see how things were going. He offered little of anything concrete, saying only that cool stuff was in the works.

I guess this qualifies.

Great move for Callaway but I’ll always go with Scotty for a high end putter! Love my circleT!

I learnt with surprise from your COG study that JPX850’s weight system can move very little COG position. How about JPX900’s? Hope it’ll be much better.

If the strategy is replicate Titilest “Scotty Cameron” would they have been better buying Tyson Lamb. Has mygolfspy reached out to Tyson to provide thoughts and direction where he is going?

How weird is this? Less than 9 months since their unveiling and less than 6 months since clubs started shipping and poof! They are gone as an independent company. Equally weird is the fact that, after months of testing, I pulled the trigger 2 hours ago and acquired a 34 inch Madison. Does this mean that my brand new putter has achieved collector status? More importantly, does this mark the end of the Toulon Garage options?

Really how much technology is going into putters. Basically all these high end putter companies are just replicating putters already out on the market. In some cases designs which have been around for 40 years or more. They polish them up give them a cool, hip name of a California town then sell them for exorbitant amounts of money. I will give credit for these little boutique companies they do produce some fantastic looking putters, but if I’m spending $400 on golf equipment it’s not going to be a putter. I’d really like to know the total sales of a company like Tulon’s or some of the other boutique brands. Scotty Cameron doesn’t count because he’s already struck gold and has nothing left to prove. I play an enormous amount of golf and i’m an equipment junkie and I make it a point to look at everyone’s clubs and honestly I’ve never seen a Toulon, Machine, Piretti, ect., ect. Putter. I wonder who they sell too?

History in the golf industry will and does repeat itself. Given the decline of the younger buyers, the market share for premium putters is very narrow and will be satisfied quickly. As for talented personnel with many years of experience moving from company to company is just a given, it has happened for years and will continue in the future .

They need to do something. Odyssey makes a great entry level putter but they just can’t keep up with Scotty Cameron. They tried with the tour blue and did a decent job if it wasn’t so damn heavy.

I suppose it could be like a lot of things. You could make $55K Toyota sedan and nobody would buy it. Call it a Lexus though….My suspicions are that what Tony hinted at in the article will play out. Leave Toulon to stand on its own internally selling the higher priced putters w/his name. Odyssey has tried to market high end milled putters but I think people swallow hard before plunkng $399 down for an Odyssey. But for a Toulon…..never know.

The Toulon Design by Odyssey makes a lot of sense – we’ll likely see a high-end milled line from Odyssey soon. Maybe some sort of boutique line with more custom options similar to the SC Custom Shop?

Not sure what you are asking. Hocknell is in SVP of R&D (for Callaway – doesn’t really do putters).

Rollinson is chief designer for Odyssey, so not sure that changes.

Toulon certainly knows putter design and may contribute in a design role, but I think this is as much about acquiring executive level talent as it is anything specifically to do with the putter business.

So if he doesn’t bring any IP to the table and won’t design any products, then why pay the cash to buy his company? I’m confused.

Like it was said many times…..the move is MORE about acquiring executive level talent, than the putter brand. Callaway didn’t want Toulon going to any other competitor because he knows the golf industry that well….so it’s a great move by Callaway! ?
