// Already A Cult Classic – The Callaway X Utility Prototype Irons

QUESTION: What do the movies Office Space, The Lost Boys, Pootie Tang, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dazed & Confused and The Thing all have in common?  Their all Cult Classics.  What do Cult Classic movies and golf have to do with today’s announcement by Callaway?  Well…Callaway seems to have created somewhat of a Cult Classic following themselves for this new club their announcing today.

For those of you that don’t know, Callaway has been not so secretly testing (thanks to sites like MGS) a new prototype on tour called the Callaway X-Utility Prototype Iron for some time now.  First time I set eyes on it, I thought…now that is a winner.  At least from the design standpoint of the club.  Question was would Callaway actually release it to the public?  You might be saying well if they have a winner on their hands why WOULDN’T they release it to the public.  Honestly, the market for a club like this is small…and it doesn’t always make financial sense.

// The New & Improved Callaway Golf

But…Callaway has a new man at the helm (new CEO, Chip Brewer)…and let’s just say the culture around Callaway is about to change!  Hell it’s already changin’.  And for the better in my opinion.  And if you just take a quick look at his past experience as CEO of Adams Golf you will notice that he is quite famous for creating Cult Classic prototype club designs and then bringing them to retail success.

And the other thing about the new CEO is he listens to YOU.  Yes YOU.  In todays world of product design, development & marketing millions and millions are spent on consulting regarding little things like what color should we paint on the club this year.  Hell some companies even consult with fashion trenders from around the world to see what colors are going to be popular 12-18 months from now.  And while I agree 100% in the importance of this in a new design…that is not always how Chip likes to work.

Nope the new CEO of Callaway listens to the consumers better than anyone I have run across.  And yes that means even from sites like MyGolfSpy and the comments you write on our articles.  I could list quite a few design tweaks he has made at the last minute because of things that came from people like you, sites like MGS and friends of his that don’t even work for the company.  Expensive consumer panel market research is great, but sometimes you just gotta go with your gut….cause it almost never fails you.

WIN! – THE NEW CALLAWAY X UTILITY PROTOTYPE

// Introducing – The Callaway X Utility Prototype Iron

Designed to replace the 2-, 3- and 4-irons that many players have been gravitating away from over the last several years, the X Utility Prototype Irons found an immediate home in the bags of several of the world’s best players, including Phil Mickelson, Branden Grace and Ernie Els.

X Utility Prototypes feature a state-of-the-art forged construction that delivers a combination of distance, speed, feel and control that has been lacking in this important area of a player’s bag for some time,” said Luke Williams, Callaway’s Global Director of Woods and Irons.  “Many players have replaced their long irons with hybrids, which are easier to hit, but the X Utility Protoypes offer a level of precision that our Tour staff has been very pleased with, plus these clubs offer a tighter dispersion than hybrids on mis-hits.

The amount of excitement that our X Utility Prototype Irons have generated on Tour and among the avid followers of golf equipment has been overwhelming and underscores our commitment to develop and introduce exciting new designs through work with the best players in the world.”

Each iron features removable weights on the sole that range from two to eight grams in two-gram increments that allow players to make swingweight adjustments to fit individual needs surrounding length, shaft and grip options.

The Callaway X Utility Prototype Irons will be available in three lofts (18, 21, 24 degrees) at select retail locations.

Wow, that’s exciting! I play the TA X Prototypes with x flex KBS Tours and absolutely love them. My three iron is my favorite iron. There’s no way I would trade it for a hybrid. I can count on 225 to 230 yards with it with a little baby draw. I don’t have anything between that and my 3 wood though. I would put that 18° in my bag in a heartbeat! I like having a gap, sand, and lob wedge though. I’ll have to decide which to leave out. That’s tough. You sure we can’t carry 15 clubs? C’mon, what’s it going to hurt? :-) I’ll tell you what I wish Callaway would do is let me buy a set of the X Protoor Razr X MB heads to save for when mine get worn. I’m sure that’s not up for discussion though, so I’ll keep looking.

Seeing the whole 2013 lineup would just be a bonus. This iron looks really cool and I would love to receive it. If I did, I would immediately take it to the range and write a detailed review when I am finished with it.

Well its been alot of years that every club maker has made irons to improve the playability, however this ment an unpleasent heavey looking club. I would hope that they could make a game improvement club that has a thinner top line, more pleasent to set up with, like a player iron.

The fact is that there is very little left to create in golf club design,I suspect the real area of innovation lies in the use of materials.
I note the appointment of the Adams chappy. That must be a good thing. As a recent convert to Adams clubs I have been astounded by their playability at a far more affordable price than premium brands. As a Scot I must admit it was a bit of club snobbery and Adams lack of a UK
      profile that made me hesitant.
I suspect the Callaway profile on the US is different from that in UK/ Europe ,but my impression is that they are a premium club in a rather overcrowded and diminishing premium club market.
Most single digit handicappers don’t change their irons as regularly as their other clubs so in the player market it’s drivers/hybrid/ wedge/ putter – those aspiring to competency(ie most of the market) will buy the whole range- but that market is not an easy or expanding one-count out China, they already make their own Callaways and any other club you like !
Innovation is the only way which leads to improved performance which leads to desirability which results in sales.
Callaway are however dependant on the attraction of golf to the masses and as I said – it’s not an expanding market-at least not here.
That’s the real problem – creating a desire for young people to play golf.

Keep utilizing real amateur players who use their equipment. I’d also like to see more options for forged wedges. I’m hoping to see an iron product line similar to that of the RAZR line. I thought it was one of the better iron line ups I have ever seen. A forged muscleback, a forged micro cavity, a game improvement (traditional looking club), and an ultra-game improvement design that also added a bit of playability. I’d also like to see at least a couple different bounce options on the wedge line up.
As far as the metal/composite woods go…..build on what has been a pretty solid product – the one knock (one of the only knocks) I have heard as a custom fitting specialist is the lack of an alignment aid on the RAZR Fit……it would be nice also if the shaft sleeve offered lie angle adjustments.
Oh yea…..and for a 14 compartment golf bag…..please, PLEASE make the putter pit big enough for the super stroke grip.

Unfortunately, It’s the type of thinking that assembled the RAZR line-up that put Cally on the precipice of oblivion…They have lacked focus in their marketing…One of the basic “immutable laws” in business is FOCUS…You cannot be all things to all people…You end up being nothing to anyone…Four of the six models in the RAZR line-up have had abyssmal sales(this according to Cally’s released sales numbers)…Less than 70% of projected sales…That is tens & tens of millions of dollars lost wordwide..And it has nothing to do with “quality”….What does Cally stand for in irons(or in any category..lol)?…Player irons?..GI irons?…SGI irons?…Forged?…Who knows?..They are the casebook example of “let’s throw as much sh*t as we can against the wall and see what sticks”…..Unfortunately, in today’s marketplace, that wall is coated with oil, and nothing sticks…

You have to choose a segment and concentrate and focus on establishing your brand in the customer’s mind that you “own” that segment..You have to own a product or word…Literally….From that ownership, a “halo” effect will take effect, and the goodwill & positive thoughts will allow other products to sell based on your singlemindedness focus & domination…Look @ Mizuno(and they’re getting dangerously close to trying to be all things to all golfers!)…Look @ Titleist…Look @ TMaG….Look at Adams…

Mizuno= forged player’ irons…Titleist= golf balls…..TMaG=Drivers…Adams= hybrids(and because of their domination in the hybrid market, they basically created the mixed hybrid/iron niche, which they own)…And this “halo” effect with Adams has spread to the GI segment also…You want a good, solid set of GI irons?…Walk into any Dick’s, GG or pro shop and chances are they’re going to show you a set of Adams GI irons..

The man who guided Adams to their growth and segment doination, Chip Brewer, is now in charge of cleaning up all of the sh*t that slid off of the walls in Carlsbad and getting Cally back into the game…I think that you’ll be seeing a slimmed down, focused line-up…

      Let’s hope so….The industry needs ’em…

      Hi,

I would hope to see more of your up to date products hitting the golf department
stores here in Bangkok, Thailand, much earlier than they do. By the time we get
the opportunity to buy, the next product is already on sale in the USA.
I don’t want to order from the USA, because of shipping costs, 4 to 6 weeks to arrive,
and then be taxed on it.

Also I would like to see shorter shaft lenght options on your drivers. You have world
class pro’s hitting 43.5 and 44 inch shatfs, but your keep insisting on putting out longer
shafts. If the top pro’s are hitting shorter shafts, what does that tell you ?????.

Also I would like to see more Senior options of higher degree clubs, together with lighter
shafts. Take note, Titliest are doing that here in Asia and getting good reports from it ?????.

I hit a 12 degree Titliest D2 the other day 20 yards farther than I can hit my Razor Hawk.
Would I buy it NO IS THE ANSWER. I don’t like the feel of it. But I do like the 12 degrees.
You maybe doing the higher degrees but they are not available here.
It was 45.5 inches. I have reduced it to 43 inches.
I’m now approx 10 to 15 yards shorter but hitting 50% more fairways.

      Keep up the good work.

      Byron.

Consumer panel focus groups are worthless as a marketing tool…They teach you much more about group dynamics than market place dynamics…Unfortunately, it’s not a psych project…

It’s good to see that Brewer is not your typical “in the box” executive…Kudos…

Now, as those above me have stated, if Cally would bring back the Hogan brand…And not be all over the map(RAZR Irons)…Forged..Muscle Back…Cavity Back…Irons & wedges…That’s it…At the end, Hogan, Inc. was trying to be all things to all golfers, just like the recent Cally line-up…

BTW, this Proto looks nice…I rotate the Mizzy FLI HIs, though I’d definitely hit this…

My game has improved, but I haven’t had any consistent success with the I-brids (still feels like I’m swinging a regular 4 and 5 iron). I would like to see callaway bring out a combo set aimed at the middle handicaper. Blades down low with mid cavities up high. Some prefer the thin, svelte look of a nice topline, low ofset club. I’m not trying to fool myself and do need some forgiveness in the longer clubs. I really think this prototype is a step in the right direction. Callaway has the high to mid handicap club design down. I would just like to see a little more for the mid to low croud.

I have an all-Callaway (and Odyssey) bag, including my golf balls, so I think I am pretty familiar the products. I think that Callaway has a great product line-up, but the names are very confusing, especially with the irons. I don’t get RAZR (and Diablo before) and how it relates to golf. The RAZR iron lines are confusing. I have the RAZR X black, and I think I know the difference between them and regular RAZR X, but there are so many similar sounding names that it is very confusing unless one wants to spend a lot of time researching it.

I would like to see Callaway offer an affordable custom iron option, as some of us don’t play standard length, standard lie irons. Having to pay the pro shop to ‘adjust’ the irons accordingly puts the price above the cost of a new set of Pings…which I can get my custom lie/length for free.

Last thing is that their razr line of drivers feel nothing like the FT 9 tour, the razr driver face is too shallow and sounds too tiny.

And a little something to grab some attention — liking the green in the Prototype — like the color options for the RAZR fit. Maybe counter the white head company with green heads. Green — it would be like — money!

I’ve been playing Golf for nearly 30 years ( so I remember the birth of the Callaway brand) and have allways been keen on the development of the technology by the different brands but if I look at their 2012 range I find it confusing and for a ” beginner ” who wants to purchase his first Callaways it must be even worse . It is a good to give the consumer a wide choice , but in recent years that choice has been pushed by the marketing department in conquest to fill up the racks in the shops with as many different Callaway products as possible and keep the competition out. They should go back and have their range based on technology and innovation like they used to do . Furthermore to stop the confusion they shouldn’t base the entire line of products on one name “RAZR” which I personnally don’t know what it means , in the past Callaway used names like S2H2 or BIG BERTHA at least you knew what they stood for. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to test the Callaway range at a demo day, some of the products where great, like the Razr irons oh wait yes the Tour irons or where they the Forged or was is the Muscle back in case the feel and the efficiency was great but I personnally wasn’t to keen on the shape of the head , but as long as they work ……

i know callaway’s always been a bit tounge-in-cheek (big bertha), but lately its like theyre trying to sell to the lowrider kid down the street- “x” this, RAZR that… if im embarassed to say the name- no matter how good the product- its going to affect my purchase decision. (see also: rocketballz. jeez.) so have some fun with it, but this 1950’s spaceship nomenclature has got to go.

Callaway has done a great job with the Razr Fit Driver. Must continue to expand their innovation with that line, keeping the adjustability and compatibility. Please no unique shapes like the previous drivers…. They were not very elegant to put it nicely….
I would like to see an iron in GE/GI class with little less offset and thinner top line. Also, Roger Cleveland should design the sole for optimum turf interaction as this has been my main complaint with Callaway irons – for whatever reason, they either dig too much or skim/bounce off the turf for me, instead of nice consistent divots.
Lastly, they must offer better or more diverse stock shaft offerings.

Hosels shift the weight closer to the heel; for the average golfer that isn’t a good thing. Shaving off a few mm’s off the hosel (or eliminating it entirely) helps to “create” weight that can then be moved towards the toe, bringing the CG location of the iron inline with the true center of the face, without having to make the clubhead heavier.

Besides, the lower the loft/longer the length, the less lie angle plays a part in accuracy. Face angle takes over for lie angle in that department.

A classic series of clubs. Think of the Bobby Jones Players hybrids or the new Cleveland Classic driver. Imagine a whole line of clubs with classic lines and modern technology wrapped up in the Hogan name.

The commercial writes itself, while others ‘innovate’ with loud colours and strange designs, we looked to the master for inspiration. The Callaway Hogan Series. Time to play some golf.

I am hoping to see a few of things in 2013 from Callaway. First of all, I would love to see them produce a driver that has more adjustability in regards to different loft settings. I absolutely love the RAZR Fit and think that a driver that has different loft settings is the next logical step.

Second, I would like to see Callaway bring back the uniflex steel shaft as a custom option for fairway woods. I ordered a new driver this past year and was disappointed to find out that uniflex steel shafts are no longer an available option for these types of clubs.

Finally, I would LOVE to see Odyssey offer more custom fitting options in their putter line. They make the best putters in the world, but fall way short in areas of fitting a player to a putter. I know this is more of an Odyssey question, but since they are part of Callaway I figured that I should ask.

Ultimately, Callaway makes the greatest golf products on the market. I have been playing their products in my bag exclusively since I got a set of Big Bertha 02 Irons. Keep up the great work!

I’m a Callaway fan and play their clubs through the bag. I’d like to see more adjustability options and a greater buzz about their products. I feel like their clubs perform well, but they don’t let people know all that they have to offer.

I would also like them to sell clubs in the following groupings Driver, Fairways, Hybrids, 7 – PW, Wedgies, and Putter. Just a thought. I rarely ever use my 2-6 irons. I am hoping to see not only one of these in my bag, but also some better stock shafts, real stock shafts and more options. They should start carrying more custom shafts like PXi, C-taper and DG Spinner. Also, I saw a patent that looked like an FT Tour head with weights. I would love to see that and perhaps a comparable fairway wood. I love my FT Tour so that shape excited me. Can’t wait for another great year with Callaway!

Welcome aboard Chip! While we may be but a blip on the market segment radar down here in the Shaky Isles (New Zealand), I do have to push our case. We have very limited access to demo opportunities here (i.e. I have never seen a demo day advertised in our city of 1 million) and so one suggestion from me would be to ramp this up as an option for your Asia/Pacific team. Additionally, increasing the range of stock shaft/grip options in Callaway irons particularly is in real need.

I’d also like to see them release a set of forged wedges that have customizable grinds in a several finishes, including a raw finish (offer more than one grind, and make it similar to the X-Forged vintage, can’t get that sucker out of my bag no matter how worn it gets). I’d like to see them offer a players ball with a more scuff proof cover. And I’d like to see them offer a 2 wood/thriver type club. I’m hoping to see 1) A black carbon version of the Razr X-Muscle back irons, with minimal graphics, like the Yuyuri Blades! 2) A continuation of the X-Forged 2009 cavity back iron line, and leave the Razr iron “angular” head design to game improvement clubs only. I’ve tested the Razr X-forged irons many times but cannot get over the look compared to my 2009 X-Forged which had a much thinner topline and more compact head. 3) Make the Razr Fit adaptor available through retailers. Part of the reason why Taylormade was so successful with their interchangeable shaft systems was because enthusiats club builder like myself can purchase authentic Taylormade R11 tips for $25 or as low as $15 R9 tips from Golf Smith. This enables me to go buy shafts and tips and try them on my driver/woood head without having to buy brand new shafts from callaway. Also, once a golf have invested lots of money on buying premium shafts, they don’t want to rebuy it again in a new driver/wood so having the ability to buy the Razr Fit tip will allow us to reshaft. 4) Continuing on the previous theme, become the first OEM to allow customers to buy individual components like driver / iron heads only. You will be amazed how many enthusiast golfers will be willing to pay full retail prices for authentic OEM components that isn’t pulled or used from the aftermarket!

More substance in the iron line. Too many clubs, not much difference other than aesthetics. Razr X Tour, Razr X Black Tour, etc… The hybrids are lacking as well. If you see them, going back to the Diablo Tour Edge that I have, at address, again, not much differentiation. Quit just putting “stuff” out; give us quality and substance in lines other than drivers and Odyssey putters. When were y’all a “player” in the iron game? Yeah, see! It’s been awhile! Drivers? Check. Putters? Check. Balls? Check. Work on everything else!

When a business is in a decline (Callaway) sometimes contraction is needed not just in the employee ranks (Callaway cuts 10% of global workforce), but in product line-up. Get out of Balls/Gloves/Shoes. Titlest/FJ owns that. Put those dollars into R&D and get your club line back in order (where they used to be in drivers). Currently they have 7 models from irons to choose from, too many, cut it to 4 or 5. Finally, fire the person who designed and the person who approved the flip face putter. Has there ever been a more blatant example of a club that encourages a person to cheat during their round.

      Dear Mr. Brewer,

MyGolfSpy has asked that your customers offer suggestions for the 2013 model year. My humble comments follow for your consideration.

I’m a golfer with 35 years of amateur tournament experience. My father has a history with 60 years of similar experience. Our formative years of golf experience offered very few choices in club selection, and straight forward, forged, muscle back designs were the norm. Although our skill level and shot making capabilities now differ, our ‘eyes’ still prefer the aesthetics of the authentic blades of that age.

As a marketer I ‘get’ the need to differentiate on looks. I understand the necessity of using technology to claim relative competitive product advantage. And I applaud the pure innovation and delivered benefits of your original S2H2 designs. Exceptional product differentiation and indeed, new ‘category’ creation within the club design arena. Ping ‘Zing’ perimeter weighting achieved this. Your early S2H2 products achieved this.

This said, given the number of players in the clubhead manufacturing arena, the number of private label brands and the direct to market products touting similar product benefits and similar, audacious aesthetics, is there any differentiation by overtly ‘displaying’ your technology? By ‘uncovering’ your patents, your visible ‘showcasing’ of multi-material design are you not falling victim of ‘commoditizing’ your products among all the other brands claiming superior results from multi-material design, superior results from better technology?

Mercedes Benz does not outwardly display their innovative patented technology. It is revealed by way of a sublimely superior driving experience.

The best clubs I’ve ever owned are your ‘Authentic Prototype’ forged irons. I play them not because I had a predisposition to your brand, to your company. I was drawn to them because of their elegance of design, the subtlety in which they hid their product attributes. I happily replaced an exceptional set of Miura blades with your product based on four golf swings.

I realize I represent a smaller customer market segment. But looking at the dearth of clubhead designs and similar marketing claims at present, wouldn’t a return to ‘cleaner’, more subtle designs have a distinct impact across all player profiles? ‘Beauty’ of design, craftmanship is not just appreciated by the low handicap set. Pleasing aesthetics are held in the highest regard by golfers, regardless of ability. Artisanship is both aspirational ‘want’ and an emotional reward.

All said, your group has the manufacturing clout and capability to reshape every iron category. To replace the ‘ostentatious hammer’ design approach with a more ‘subtle hand’ tact achieves product and brand differentiation in this present marketplace. Further, it promotes increased positive talk and pride of ownership among golfers.

I would love to see such a return to beauty, to artistry within your Callaway family.

Please forgive any presumption in this correspondence. My intent is only to share my humble opinion.

Best wishes for your tenure at the helm of Callaway Mr. Brewer. I hope you still get the chance to play a little golf.

      Sincerely,

      Michael Keffer

I’d love to see a Callaway branded putter. (I know they have Odyssey, so all you people who were bout to comment that can hold off!)

Variable sole wedges. It’s time guys. Cleveland and Titleist (and you) are the only ones who still use traditional wedges. Follow Bridgestone / SCOR with the V-Sole or invent something epic like the ATV. Roger Cleveland, just do it!

      Player’s hybrids. Screw offset.

More options / actual mfr. logo on the wood / hybrid shafts. I’d much rather my shaft say “Aldila VS Proto” and be blue than it be black and say ‘Callaway graphite”

Well, if this utility club is any indication of what we might see from Callaway in 2013 then it’s a great start. At a time when hybrids are (mostly) starting to look like fairway woods, this club is a very welcome sight. I will play my Adams Pro a12’s until the heads fall off…or I will replace one of them with a free Callaway from MGS! Looking through the iron offerings from Callaway is like looking through the options pages of a GM vehicle. There are so many that you get lost in the details and I still don’t see something that is a fit for me. They tend to look big, clunky and busy (exceptions are the X forged and musclebacks). I do play the Tour i(z) ball and hope Callaway continues to produce a top quality golf ball (haven’t tried the newer Hex balls yet).

After reviewing the product line on Callaway’s site, I have to admit that these guys are in every club space that they could possibly be, and I would hate to think that I could suggest a better club than their R&D could come up with. However, I do think that they could expand on their clothing/attire line. You rarely see any Callaway attire on the Big Guns. Although Phil, Ernie, and Jim F. are known as company guys – nothing they wear puts Callaway attire on the map. Nike, Puma, TM, and Oakley seem to be leading the charge. It would be nice to see some fashionable attire donning the Callaway boys.

I think Callaway had a great idea in 2012 with being able to customize the color or drivers. In 2013 Callaway should allow you to custom color your irons, wedges, and anything else.

Maybe this idea is more for Odyssey than Callaway, but an adjustable putter would be awesome. For slow greens have heavier weights and a fast greens you can pop in lighter weights. The ability to adjust loft or even pop a belly or standard shaft into a putter would allow players to tinker without purchasing a new putter head.

I hope the iMix concept comes back so that I can not only have option of changing loft and how open/closed face is but be able to easily swap out shafts of various flexs, kickpoints, etc., (would be nice to have adjustable swingweighting ootions also). Would like to see this in drivers, woods, and hybrids.

I would love to see the bushel basket driver have some competition with a new high tech 2 wood with a great shaft.Something that would put some height on the drive while staying around the same length . Lets call it a hybrid driver. When you get my age its hard to swing something bigger than you are.

I have not been a Calloway fan until recently when I bought a set of XF irons. Now I love them. They look a little like the shape of this Callaway X Utility Prototype. I would like to see them re-work their brand and use the new technology in an old style package like the Ben Hogan APEX style irons or X 18’s. Best of the old and new. They have the heritage, use it correctly.

I’d like to see Callaway do something new with their players irons, maybe a slightly more forgiving take on their x-proto irons from a few years ago, that was a sweet iron, one of my all time favorites for look and feel, but is just a bit too much to handle for many of us! IT seems like they go from there to big and clunky, with nothing in between.

Really like the look of the new driving iron! 21* here please! Thanks for the contest Callaway and MGS!

While the design of the driving iron was never sexy there has always been a mistique (intrigue if you will) or draw to own one. Maybe it goes back to the old classic joke ” if lightening comes stand in the middle of the fairway because not even God can hit a 1 Iron”. I am not sure but having one sure would be cool;) (does look a little like the Adams Idea Proa12 hybrid from the address position no?????)

All joking aside let’s get to the nitty gritty now that we have Mr. Brewer’s attention (or at least we hope). Starting with the price of the “customized” driver this year, while the concept was great, the prize was nuts (definitely priced themselves out and the recent sales prices are even more evident)…..A better looking iron in the game improvement lineup would be nice (the razr’s are OK but we need something bold yet elegant). The Prototype forged was a sweet release but may be time for an upgrade too…..As for the ball while the HEX sure is different I just don’t see where the competion stands to the other big guys.

My biggest pet peve for 2013 is that while Callaway is a big player we need someone to rival the marketing adds and creativity of TAYLORMADE!!!!!!!! Nuff said!!!

How much fun would it be to see multiple adds at the beginning of spring or even during the Superbowl with golf companies going at one another like Coke and Pepsi…Yes yes I know the superbowl is befo ethe PGA show but SO WHAT!!!

Sign me up Mr. Brewer I’m an accountant but will throw everything but the kitchen sink at those rate bastards to start evening the playing field!!!!!!!!!

What am I hoping to see from Callaway in 2013.

Callaway needs to improve the stock shaft offering in their clubs (like Adams and Cleveland).
Callaway needs to better explain why a certain club is better for my game. Explain to me why the Razr iron 1 is better than Razr iron 2. And explain in more detail – is the sole better for me if I dig, is the offset better for me if I slice, etc. (like some of the niche companies like SCOR, Wishon, etc).
Callaway needs to either improve on its technology, or explain why its technology is superior.

I think Callaway needs to really push the boundaries of what is possible from a large company. They need to scour the smaller companies for unique technology that works but the smaller companies cannot market and gain traction, and license/but those technologies. They they need to figure out a way to enable fitters a level of fitting that comes close to the Wishon experience. Callaway needs to provide different levels of fitting and build service at different price points to leverage the better fittings.

      Good luck!

First off I love the idea of a hybrid that looks like an iron.

For 2013, I’d love to see Callaway take their uDesign and make it a no-charge option rather than a surcharge. I also think the ‘X’ has worn out it’s welcome as has Razr and would like something new with simple styling.

I would love to see more innovation from Callaway over the next year or two. To me it has seemed like they have been more in the business of refining tried and try designs and manufacturing techniques. While there is nothing wrong with that, this new utility club is a definite sign that innovation can be a beautiful thing. Even if I don’t win, there is a very good chance this club will be in my bag once available.

I would like to see Callaway work hard at becoming the best in a line of senior clubs. Driver, hybrids and irons..
The golf craze has slowed that was stoked by the baby boomers and they are getting older. Someone is going

Things I’m hoping to see from Callaway

A: A reduced iron line of offerings. Simply put, there’s way to many and the confusion about which iron fits which player out there is staggering.

B: Go back to making excellent irons for the new to average player as your bread and butter. Then stick out a forged butter knife for the players who want one. IMO the real heart and soul of Callaway was always the GI irons that looked great while still having a bunch of tech to help out us mere mortals built in.

C: Perhaps not realistic, but as a tinkerer I would love to see Callaway drop the prices on their after market shaft upgrades. Their about the most expensive going and as someone that fits a couple specific shafts Callaway looses signifigant pull from me when the driver cost is initially the same but the shaft upgrade is twice or more expensive from them.

D: Please add C Tapers to your shaft offerings

E: How about custom wedges? I love the head shape of the Callaway Forged wedge for example but if one could custom order say naming stampings with paint fill, or a personal grind like Cleveland or Titleist is doing that would be great. I don’t have any problem paying more for the service as long as it’s reasonable (Say $15 for the grind from a blank and another $15-20 for name stampings with paintfill. Shaft and grip options also available for a fee).

Would LOVE to see Callaway come out with some players cavities with a cool grind/turf interaction technology. I think that’s the new frontier along with lightweight or hybrid shafts, like steelfiber, PXi, Nippon Modus, etc. Callaway could be at the top of the golf world again!

I play 2008 BB Irons 5-PW (only been playing 3 years). I have worked hard and now have a “respectable” handicap. I’ve owned Callaway drivers (still looking for the elusive perfect club), hybrids (one Fusion 2H stays in the bag), fairway woods (now only carry a Ping 4w). Love my MacDaddy wedges and Odyssey putter – my scoring clubs. Some of us have not “arrived” and are still improving, looking forward to that sub-par round. Hence, I hope that equipment manufacturers concentrate on a better value/results quotient in their products. With pricing for new clubs so high, I generally look to on-line vendors (including Callaway pre-owned) to fill my evolving needs. Also, as a LEFT HANDED golfer, I am continually disappointed in the limited selection made available to us. Lefties often can’t get the specific clubs we need because manufacturers don’t make them for us!

I am simply hoping that Callaway can continue to improve their product and marketing to help erode the Titleist / Taylormade dominance across the industry. Strong competition benefits everyone, and with the consolidation of the industry, we need all the strong competitors we can get, and Callaway seems poised to reemerge as an industry powerhouse (again).

Current product lines are good, but not really great. Marketing for the last year or so has been too subtle and simply doesn’t grab the eyes.

Time to expand the visual identity.

The integration of the green X is a nice start, perhaps carry that across the product lines, to really make the Callaway clubs stand out on the course, much like the Orange of the Cobra Amp, or the White of the TM…

Callaway needs a big year in 2013 to be back on the top tier of the equipment world. I’d love to see some new irons and hybrids, along with the new prototype utility, to push callaway back to the top. They have been in the shadows of Taylormade and Titleist for a bit now and need some new irons and hybrids. The new Hex Black ball is already a winner and so is the Razr Fit, so how about some more top notch irons that people will want as their first choice. With the help of the new Adams’ CEO at the helm, they are already in the right direction.

I would like to see Callaway actually go back to the FT9 TA design maybe with adjustability. They also really need to push the player iron envelope, I played their original X-prototypes and I feel that was the best iron they ever made. So maybe instead of always looking at everything has to go forward look at what made them successful in the past. If that means getting only catering to the high handicap then so be it! Callaway was at the Top of their game when I never played any of their clubs. It seems like they tried to go and please every type of golfer from single digit to high handicap,,…. Maybe thats just not their forte!

I would love to see Callaway not just put out products to directly compete with that company that should not be named that makes white drivers. Sure they have had success with the white drivers and the terribly named brand lines, but that doesn’t mean Callaway will too. Do what you do best and be unique and innovative…this is clearly a step in the right direction for Callaway.

Selling the Top Flite brand was a major lose for them too. Their range ball line was one of the best and starting a new line of Strata range balls is not going to cut it. They need to come out with an affordable elite range ball line as well.

      I went to Callaway’s website to see what’s missing… and wow… I didn’t realize they had such a complete line-up!

So the following is just a suggestion to fill-up the “gaps”.

      1. What about a “traditional” driver that doesn’t use Forged Composite? I personally don’t game a Callaway (considering the RAZR Fit though), but I know a few golfers that refused to try it because of the lack of metallic sound on impact. It’s a matter of taste and sometimes stubbornness… the same way some people refuse to play a white driver.

      2. The RAZR iron line seems to be somewhat overlapping (HL, XF, Black, normal, Tour). It just feels that the difference between these models is minimal and actually confuses the end user. Ideally, Callaway should provide about 3 lines of irons for the player, mid HCP and SGI.
Player’s irons could be the RAZR X Forged or perhaps a new MC/MB model. While the mid capper uses something less bulky than the RAZR X Tour (something like the old X-22 Tour) and keep the RAZR X line as the SGI.

Yeah, it’s a real shame what has happened to the Hogan brand name. Just as well that I don’t aspire to engaging in any USGA amateur competition, because I’d be hard-pressed to give up my Hogan irons for something newer with conforming grooves.

That having been said, I am actually pondering methods of re-facing and re-grooving a set of irons (I am a mechanical engineer) — a set of any of the various permutations of the Hogan Apex irons with the new grooves and the maxed-out surface roughness they put on irons and wedges these days would be killer…
