Will Callaway X2 Hot Be Best Driver 2 Years In A Row?

Who made the best performing driver in 2013? Callaway. Which model? The Callaway X Hot.

If you want to check the numbers feel free, we got plenty of ’em for ya.

So, what’s one of the drivers you should be most interested in trying out in 2014? Yep, that’s right, it’s called the Callaway X2 Hot. We got some pics and info for you to check out. The newest kid on the block in Callaway’s 2014 driver stable will be ready to launch Mid-Janurary. And for those that like their whole bag to match, we got the pics of the fairway wood, hybrid and irons as well.

Recently seen a Japanese YouTube clip and the x hot2 driver and woods all had a polished black look,looked classy. Does anyone know if the polished look will be available in the USA and Europe.

I have for past 10 years played only Callaway & Titleist golf equipment & balls. I am a 15 handicapper. I used just about every Callaway driver & woods until 2011. From 2011 to current, none looked good or worked for me. Went to 2012 Titleist 910 driver & woods & hybrid & surprise hit them better (even though surprised RD sales guys said they were for single digit players. in last 2 years have tried all new Callaway stuff out every 6 months, and not working. 2012 Callaway white & silver graphite shafts, UGLY. New line even UGLIER. 2014 X Hot irons here look HORRIBLE. In irons I have 2011 RAZR X, 2010 Diablo Forged, 2010 AP2, and now getting 2014 AP1. By the way, Bullwinkle, who post new Apex ” Callaway’s first forged mid-handicap, must have never seen or heard of Diablo Forged. And new Apex looks IDENTICAL, except for back badge.

Hey guys,
I work as an assistant pro at a golf course and have had a chance to hit all the new product coming out for the 2014 season. I have never ever been a Callaway fan. I didn’t even really like the XHOT stuff for this past seson that much, but hands down the best product I hit recently was the X2HOT line for next year! I really really like the Optiforce driver they released and the X2HOT might be better! So, don’t be deceived by the look and color because they are awesome clubs! Also, the Apex forged irons for next season are very nice. I have been staffed with and always been a loyal Titleist guy, but I may have to switch after testing the new product Callway has for next season.

the xhot line performed very well, and i have no reason to doubt this stuff will be better (if only marginally) and i cant see the bottom of my clubs when i swing them. that being said, the crown graphics look a little nickent-y, like they’re trying too hard to be xtreme… this is like a smoking hot woman with a very unfortunate tribal armband tattoo. in a few years they’re gonna want to laser that crap off of there and hope no one remembers they had it, while asking why no one told them not to do it in the first place.

The orange is so awful that it seriously detracts from what looks like it could be a great new line of clubs. PLEASE don’t fix what’s working. Red and Black are as ingrained into the Callaway brand as red, white and blue are in our flag. Offer orange as an option if you must. But please don’t force it on us.

I’ll do what I did with the XHot. Wait until the end of the season and purchase it at 35-40% off… if a demo proves its worth.

I can’t judge a club until it comes out of prototype form and I see it, and hit it.

Got to see these in person and these pictures do not do them justice at all, the paint job is actually pretty nice looking and with an Adila tour ATX as a stock shaft you cant go wrong.

I also wanted to post that, after talking to a local country club pro, who is sponsored by Callaway, after I showed him this article, that these may not be what is put into final production, colors may change, shafts etc. He said that whenever any new clubs are designed a bunch get made and sent out for testing, reviews, and such. He said that after all the information they have gathered comes back, they go over everything and make changes as needed. Said he has been sent clubs from Callaway that never even got made for retail to test. I have no actual proof that this is true or not, just thought I would post.

I am new to golf, but judging by what I have noticed on all the golf forum sites, I have trouble beleiving the average golfer uses the same clubs for 1 month much less years. Unless those people are lying, but seems like every time I get on one of the sites they have all changed clubs, shafts, etc.

This is another example of designers getting way too involved in the design process. The orange color is pretty bad, but why in the world do they have to put all of those scrolls, lines, etc on top of the head??? There was another blog on this site about when will Taylor made fall out of the top spot. The answer is when someone finally resists the temptation to do exactly what they are doing to “uglify” the top of golf clubs.

What will be clear is the hard lesson CG is going to learn from it’s failure to differentiate (name, performance, appearance…quite literally everything). Come January, golfer John Q. Public holds a new X-Hot in one hand…hold the new X2-Hot in the other….. does the math (and dislikes orange)… X2-Hot likely gathers excessive foot traffic dust. It is a reasonable bet that this product line will begin its phased discounting in April.

Compound this with 1) the likelihood that the fairway gold-rush is over and 2) TM beat Callaway to market with both the sliding adjustment and low and forward CG science…. and you have a challenging year for CG wood sales.

I had the luxury of hitting this product and seeing. Sadly, in my opinion its not near as attractive as the original X HOT Driver and Fairway. I thought it looked cheaper. However, most of the ” samples” are not near as attractive than what comes out. The irons and the woods in my opinion lack shelf appeal. The APEX Iron was good, but for 1,100.00 I expect more.

So what does all this prove. What happened to the days when you bought the Driver that you hit well, felt good, and hit it straightest. Today it is read the ads, read the “tests”, and run straight to your nearest store and buy it.

Anyone ever consider that shafts, Graphite that is, are not consistent? The same shafts in 6 clubs can be totally different making the ball react differently, and I am talking same brand and flex, they are not the same. The same goes with loft, there can be a 2 degree difference. A 9 could be a real 11 and vice versa. And the flex affects trajectory also.

The point is, if you hit a club good, even a demo, try to buy it. Chances are the same club they make will not be the same. These things are facts!!! Many years as a player and clubmaker have taught me that is a fact. Science is great, but it doesn’t tell it all enough to say it is a sure thing.

Guys, I hit the X Hot pretty good, but the Optiforce came out about the time I was buying and I’m glad it did. After hitting the 460 and the 440 heads, I purchased the 440 in a regular shaft. It comes standard as a 9.5, but easily adjusts to 8.5 to 11.5 and is the hottest driver I’ve ever touched, period. I’m 63 and average about 225 with my old driver, I hit the Optiforce 283 on a long drive hole this past week, and was longer than 250 on every drive I hit.

Chip Brewer is the CEO at Callaway, he has them producing the best equipment in Callaway’s history. Callaway’s new Apex Irons are the first Forged, long, and even game improvement Irons. Chip oversaw the Adams revolution, and creating another one at Callaway. Until this year I’d never owned a Callaway Club, now I’ve got a bag full and I’ll be among the first to get the Apex Irons.

Sounds as if you were not fit properly for your last driver or its design did not fit you.

You don’t gain 60 yards by changing a driver unless something was terribly wrong with the last non-fit.

I can believe 25-30 yards from a poorly fit driver. FWIW, I put stock Optiforces and a stock R1 with same loft in the same LM at the same time – the R1 was longer … for me by a large margin. But I like the XHot.

I was fit, but I no long will accept as gospel the fittings done in store. Man I hit everything like a pro in store, then no so much on the course. Clearly I’m a senior, I can’t explain the difference in distance, but when Younger I hit the ball country long. I was average in our senior group prior to the Optiforce, now I’m one of the longest hitters. My average drive is only a little over 28 yards longer than my old TM Driver, but on the long drive hole I had both feet off the ground and the ball just went straight, ha. I tried the R-1 too, but I’m convinced Callaway is the future for most golfers.

Does no one look at the shape of clubs anymore? look at that hybrid. Imagine looking down at that shape. Would that bother ANYONE else? Or am I the weird one?

Also, the face looks like an Adams hybrid. Not saying that’s good or bad, just saying.

I’m okay with the graphics, but I would a[[appreciate it if someone would help me check my eyes. Are all those heads setting up about 1/2* closed. Not that I have a real problem with that, but I’d like to know what you folks think.

They look closed because that’s the way the photo was taken.
They would have adjustable hosels, just like most of today’s clubs, so one sets it as one likes it.
All these clubheads were off the ground when the photo was taken, so that doesn’t tell you anything about the face angle, though you are correct in that they all appear to look “closed”, simply due to the photographer.
Another commenter named @pooch stated that they look old and dirty. Obviously they actually wouldn’t look old and dirty when brand new on the store shelf, but they have taken on that appearance due to the photography.
Since this is “my golf spy”, I guess that spy photos don’t always have that clear, crisp look of a professional photography studio. There will be more and better photos coming along eventually, likely on the Callaway website itself.

Like many of you other commentators, I too am not that keen on the orange trim, but I guess that is the color du jour. Maybe they can get Rickie Fowler to switch to Callaway :)

I purchased the X hot after trying several drivers and was pleasantly surprised at the added distance over the competition. The colors are fine. You guys need the colors to match your shorts or what?

finally callaway look like they have come up with a great looking hybrid! not impressed by the hybrids on the xhot line. would definitely consider putting the x2 in the bag.

All these drivers are crap made in CHINA .If you want a very good driver ,get a KRANK driver ,made in USA ,with a FUJIKURA TOUR shaft .These are THE drivers real long hitters play,several Times long Drive Winners .Don’t buy all these drivers who rely solely on marketing type to attract would be customers .

They may be made in China Mbwa, but I highly doubt that they are – as you so eloquently put it – crap… likewise, while I don’t doubt that the Krank drivers are great for a subset of golfers, they are not the best fit for everyone (just as the X2hot will not be). Again, the blanket statements make you sound much less intelligent than I’m sure you are … any company that relied solely on marketing hype would not last long…

Great story, but totally false. Krank drivers are produced in China. The shafts likely come from Taiwan or Vietnam or wherever it is Fujikura produces their shafts. The clubs are ASSEMBLED in the USA (which is more than a stones throw away from being MADE in the USA). Here’s the reality…Nobody with even a little skin in the game is manufacturing heads in the USA. It’s cost prohibitive. Everything comes from China and Japan.

FWIW, PING and TaylorMade among others assemble their clubs in the US as well.

I was once a Krank Fan, but their customer service was abysmal. They “fitted me” for a tour shaft with a “promise” they would change it out for a non tour shaft or softer flex if I needed it. Within the first month I told them I couldn’t hit the Krank, they passed the buck around and I had emails from 3 different names none of which would or did issue a Return Authorization. I sold the driver and lost money on it when it was almost new after 6 months of begging Krank, and specifically Mr. Reader to change it out for me. All I can say is if you order a driver from Krank, make sure it is what you need, because they will not stand behind it.

No bashing here but, I’m getting tired of all the color schemes which I didn’t think would happen. I recently tested the X-Hot, Ping G25, Amp Cell, Super S and the Classic Custom XL at the local PGA Superstore and I thought I’d walk out with the X-Hot after the testing it got on Golfspy but, to my surprise I got the best results from the Cleveland Classic Custom XL and it looks great with the all black club head and the black Miyazaki shaft. Very classy!

Absolutely unbelievable. I purchased the Extreme Fit (Like Ping the answer to all of my problems). Then they introduce the Optiforce which I was just about ready to consider in spite of the time frame between the two. Now here we go folks- weeeeeeeee- the XHot 2 is the one to have in your bag. BS…I’m sticking with the Extreme Fit.

Better yet, if that’s what you want to do, why piss and moan about it? So, the marketing was so good that you were almost talked into switching drivers for no damn good reason, but you’re mad that they market it well? Seriously, just idiotic.

I completely agree. I think a lot of club junkies like and respect the way Titleist and even Ping do their product cycles and sort of get tired of hearing about a “longer”/better driver every 3-6 months from Callaway and TM. But in the end, you’re right as club junkies, you’d think we’d be smart enough to figure out that you’re not losing anything – and I mean anything – by hanging on to your current gamer for a few years. This would explain why neither the RFE nor the X Hot Pro can touch my Diablo Octane Tour Limited.

I can’t believe I’m going to defend Callaway here–but here goes.

You know the companies don’t think everyone is going to buy a new club every year, right? So why get pissed at them. The average turnover for a driver is 5 years, for a fairway wood its 8 years. So, 12.5% of the market changes fairway woods every year. If YOU do it every year–you are the idiot, not Callaway. This constant whining is asinine. The amount of people doing it, and loudly proclaiming themselves as morons, amazes me. You’re right–there is bloviating going on. Just not by who you think.

I’m sure they hit good but the hybrid and driver look fugly. The fairways have always looked good and hit great, but give me atleast a 12 month life cycle. This push as much product through in a 12 month period is getting ridiculous. If i hit it 5 meters further with every new product thats come through in the last 5 years I would be hitting it 320m off the tee by now…… wouldnt that be nice.

Weren’t the Aldila “Tour Blue” and “Tour Green” shafts the ones that were counter-balanced for drivers that are 46 inches?

Does that mean these will come stock at 46 inches?

I don’t care about the colors. I don’t care who plays the club at the Pro Level. If the X Hot 2 performs better than the X Hot, they have my money.

X Hot was one of the great values this year and a true performer for me. That’s all I care about.

These look old already.Dirty etc. They give the feel of knock off clubs that use names that are close to the original but we all know they are not. If they are real I like the deeper face on the hybrid. I currently play the Xhot hybrid and love them.

Callaway generally has numerous shaft options, but you have to pay an upgrade fee for the majority of them. There may be a couple that cost the same as the stock, though you’d have to wait for a special order at the store.
The upgrade cost generally varies depending on the particular shaft option that you choose.

No chance these hit at 349. That was the price point that they thought TM was going to be at after some snooping. They were wrong. The new RBZ replacement will hit at 299. Callaway will adjust accordingly, just like they did last year pre-release when they found out TM’s price points. Always reacting.

I’m also pretty sure the X2Hot driver will be available in more than 1 head. The pro is 1 loft only, but not the regular head.

Also, the hybrid is groundbreaking. Absolutely stunning. Cannot believe how great it is. If they can’t sell this thing,they should just close up shop.

The gooseneck look that has been Callaway’s calling card in the hybrids is gone. And the ball speeds are thru the roof. Just a homerun all around. That damn gooseneck made it hard to line up, and the tour guys hated them. I cannot imagine that this won;t be played by most of their staff. Just very easy to line up, very long, and feels fantastic.

Looks like orange is the color alright . It looks a lot like the Fg Wilson Staff series for 014.
I would think they could have done differently. Not impressed!

Orange and black must have shown up in everyone’s market testing. Miz, Wilson, and now Cally all have that color scheme working in one line or another for 2013. I’ll miss the classic red and black though.
