Nickent Golf – Bought by Dick’s Sporting Goods

It’s Aliveeee!

Well maybe not for long…we will have to wait and see.  But for the meantime Nickent Golf has been resurrected from the graveyard of the “Once Well Known Golf Brands”.  Dick’s Sporting Goods has purchased the brand and will be bringing out a new line-up of Nickent clubs which will be arriving in Dick’s and Golf Galaxy stores across the country around Memorial Day.

The Dick’s/Nickent deal actually happened a few months ago but resurfaced yesterday a little more officially.  And from what we know the entire previous Nickent operation and staff will be completely overhauled.  The majority of the ex-employees I know have not been contacted in any way about being brought back on to help re-establish the brand with Dick’s.  Some of the ex-employees have moved on to other golf companies like Williams Golf and Vibrant Golf.  And ex-Nickent President John Hoeflich will also not be a part of the re-launched brand from what we know.

So Who Will Be Designing Nickent Clubs Now?

Well when Dick’s bought another brand Walter Hagen (remember them) they initially looked to Tad Moore the famous putter designer to do many of their designs after that purchase.  Although they have since began using other sources.  And from what we know it seems as though the likely designers for the new Nickent gear will be the inside sources they already use from one of their other brands GolfWorks.

So What Will Become Of Nickent Now?

Up to this point big box stores like Dick’s are very reluctant to spend money on any of the “Once Well Known Golf Brands” they acquire.  This means that the tour presence Nickent once had will most likely be a thing of the past.  Big chains that acquire golf companies like this are more concerned with the high margins a house brand can bring to the table and less concerned about the overall image of the brand.  Although history has seem to show that these margins are usually short lived because of the lack of a tour presence and zippo when it comes to the “Pyramid of Influence” throughout the rest of the retail distribution channel.

PYRAMID OF INFLUENCE:

Too often what leads to a products success is how much money they have behind them to market the product and how many players on tour are playing the product when the TV’s are on for the weekend.  What the industry calls the “Pyramid of Influence” is a very powerful thing.  A products validation starts with what the Pros are playing….and flows a little something like this:

  • PGA Tour Players
  • Other Tours
  • Collegiate Players
  • PGA Professionals
  • Retailer
  • Customer

So…What Is Your Opinion About The Purchase?

What do you think will ultimately happen to the Nickent brand?  Will it be more of the same with the bog box golf acquisitions?  Will the Nickent name be forever forgotten?  Do you think they will ever produce another club sought after by the avid golfer.  Or will Dick’s buck the trend and actually keep the name alive by offering a top-tier Nickent line of clubs?

. . . . .continuing on my last thought, you need look no farther than the lack of a contact number for Nickent Golf to give feedback, order new adjustable hosels, order replacement parts, head covers, wrenches, or get technical specs on their shafts.

As soon as Nickent was born at Dick’s it started dying. They have no idea how to support a golf club line. If they think they can treat a new line of Golf clubs like a new thermos in isle 5 they are gravely mistaken.

Someone came to my shop yesterday and asked me to reshaft and spine align their Nickent 3 wood. I had to trun them away because I had no specs, couldn’t find replacement hosels and had no phone number in which to obtain them. Do you think that guy is going to buy anymore Nickent stuff?

I am a certified club maker. I went to the Maltby school and I am a big fan of their ability and technology to design clubs, so I know that the clubs will be very playable, I also know that Dick’s will not handle this line correctly. They will put the Nickent clubs in the corner with no pro endorsements, no promotion and no serious retail space.

I have hit the F26’s and the F30’s and they are very good clubs. In fact I hit the F30’s farther and better than the top three leading brands, but again Dick’s will kill this line due to their ignorance, lack of a celebrity endorser, exposure and overall attention. The Nickent name alone will not sell these clubs and Dick’s is in for a serious “Wake-up-call.”

I own a very old Nickent PP/001 Pipe putter but the plastic “pipe” has deteriorated and broken. Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase the replacement pipe part??
      Thanks

I do hope that the Nickent name continues even under Dick, especially in the hybrid department. I stumbled upon Nickent when I was looking for a cheaper alternative to the big name hybrids that were out there. Bought the 3DX DC without even test hitting it first… Over the years, the 3DX has been my goto club for sticky situations.

I have owned and played the Nickent 3DX hybrids since they were first released and at that time, for me, they beat all the big brands hybrids in performance by far which is why I chose them. Just picked up the 7DX 3/4 hybrids as well as the 7DX 3 FW and again, for me, they still outshine the overpriced big brands. I have hit every FW and Hybrid made by Taylormade, Callaway, Adams, Cleveland, Ping, you name it and the Nickents still feel better and offer more consistency.shot after shot.

I recently purchased a Nickent DX4 evolver driver at a store that deals in lightly used sporting goods. Love the driver! Love Dicks! Hope they will do the clubs justice. Don’t let them fall by the wayside for the sake of the almighty dollar. To make money, you have to spend money. With the reputation that Dicks has as a go to place to shop, people wll spend money for quality.

My greatest wish is to own a “pipe dream putter” from nickent. Seems like it was made just as they went under. It looks like a great price of golf design

I bought 2 months ago a 3DX hybrid and am doing great with it.BUT I have never had a club head that the paint chipped so badly on. At least 7 chips. I guess I am stuck with this one with no recourse except that I do get good distance out of it.

As the former buyer and G.M. at Hackers Helper Golf shoppes in Pittsburgh, I know Nickent! I was the first to bring it to Pittsburgh in our 8 locations, the home of Dick’s Sporting Goods. WE SOLD NICKENT! We also kicked Dicks butt in GOLF SALES! That is what it takes to move this brand. You cannot have kids working in a sporting goods store selling this brand. It is an either or choice and the star studded Callaway and Taylor Made Brands sell themselves because of un-trained golf sales people and massive advertising. Dicks can’t be successful with Nickent. They should stay with name brand CLOSE-OUTS to make margin! A WASTE OF MONEY IN A BIG BOX STORE!

I recently broke my Nickent 3DX FW just by hitting a ball. Thankfully it was a good shot on 17 to win the tourney but trying to get it fixed. It broke right at the hossle. Anyone know if they will fix or replace this club. For answers please email me @ [email protected]. Thanks in advance

I have been a big fan of the NIckent brand of clubs for years and recently purchased the 6DT hybrid without getting a chance to hit it. I stopped by a Galaxy Golf Store to see how it plays after hitting it on the simulator I felt that this is a club well worth switching out with my 3DX. As someone that had worked in the industry years ago, I found it easier to sell the Nickent clubs because I had owned a set and was well aware of what a novice and advanced player was looking for in a good quality club or set of clubs. I am hoping that the irons will come in an all graphite line in the coming future. In talking to a sales representative I was informed that the new driver would be coming to a Galaxy Golf store near you in the next couple of months. Again, it is a good brand of club and hopefully through marketing and even doing like the previous/original company they will get some pros to play the club and let it speak for itself. Word of mouth is still the best form of advertising.

I hope that Dick’s has the desire to contunue to develope the Nickent Hybrids as a top tier club. I actually receided a set of the irons that my wife found on a close-out sale and I have really enjoyed using them. They are way ahead ot the Wilson Ultras that I have struggled with for years. I hope to see Dick’s/ Golf Galaxy advances the line of clubs and the best way to do that is produce a good club and market it….. market it…. market it!

If Dick’s is smart, they will at least continue to develop the Nickent hybrids with the same commitment to quality and innovation that Nickent is known for. To do any less is a mistake, and one can only hope that Dick’s knows this.

As far as the rest of the line, Nickent never really broke through as a well known name for drivers or irons. While I’m not suggesting that Dick’s skimp in these areas, it’s clear that these clubs have never been Nickent’s strong suit, so they will probably not be developed very much.

Overall, I believe that Nickent will probably bring Dick’s some short term sales with the hybrids, but like all other sporting good store golf lines, it will die a slow death over time and fall into obscurity.

Don’t believe me? When’s the last time you heard a friend of yours brag about buying some MacGregor clubs? Lynx? Maxfli? Tommy Armour? All lines now owned by sporting goods stores and all have lost their prestige as a result.
