First Look – PING i and GMax Irons

As we move into summer and creep towards fall, golf’s equipment hot stove is beginning to bubble.

Despite PING’s reputation playing it close to the vest until the very last minute, details about its fall lineup are starting to leak.

Sources outside the company are telling us PING has 3 2 significant new product offerings assumed to be for late summer/early fall release.

PING i Irons

pingie1

The suggestion is that PING will try and reinvigorate the franchise with what can be thought of as its next generation i-series iron that is likely a direct replacement for the i25.

One potentially interesting bit of info: the i (“E1” won’t be part of the final release) is rumored to come stock with PING’s CFS distance shaft, which some will no doubt find a curious choice for what should be regarded as a more player-centric iron.

PING GMax Irons

pingg30max

The SF Tec (figuratively) of the G-series iron franchise, the GMax looks to be the evolution of the Karsten iron (and the K-series that came before it). It should prove to be your super game-improvement option from PING.

The G-Series is, across the board, the strength of the PING lineup, so what you’re seeing along with the new product is a bit of a re-branding effort/unification effort. Consumers love the G-Series, so why not embrace that and expand the lineup?

We’ll have additional information and photos as they become available.

I play ping Anser irons but have a set of S55 in my holiday home. After four weeks away I decided to go back to S55. Then wondered if they will be bringing out a S54 model soon. Does anyone know? I don’t like what I see with the current trend of the I and G models

The IE1 is named that way in the price list so don’t think the E1 will disappear. The GMax shows up as GMax K in the price list.

The G Max looks just like the G25 and G30 irons but with a new look for the rear cavity. I’m assuming that the faces will be even thinner and some engineering purpose for changing the shape of the cavity insert at the base. I’m not impressed with the graphics but to compare these irons with anything TaylorMade sells is an unwarranted insult.

I love Ping, and I love my Ping I20’s but these new offerings resemble Taylormade Speedblades and Burner irons. Not a fan.

I’ve Used Pings for over 30 years, almost from day one. I’m a ping player and have loved the looks and playability – However the new G model is not attractive and they may find it hard to move. My moto is if it looks like a shovel it will play like a shovel. Cosmetics must be attractive for players to buy, otherwise they move on to another brand. Please Ping, ditch the G – Model its not your best look whatsoever. BG

I miss the classic ping irons looks these are so horrible looking what the hell is ping thinking with these cheap looking tin stamps glued in the back, Im sure they will feel good so looks shouldnt really matter BUT enough is enough with this BS bling in the back cavity. Their clubs dont look like pings anymore , now long ferrules I sure miss Karsten his son is an idiot he pretty much destroyed what ping was plus his father NEVER would have gone to china and take those jobs away from the people, dont get me wrong ping irons still feel and perform just as good as they always did but this iron looks like a disaster after comming from beutiful looking wedges besides, dont understand why they seem to want to make them look so non ping looking and durable looking. These inserts make their irons today look so fake and damageable sad.

Went to a Ping rep who fitted me for the new G30 irons and he told me I should use green dot 5 thru 7 and yellow dot 8 thru pw. Anyone else heard of this? I also hit the new G Max…it is 1/2 inch longer than the G30’s and feels really good….should be out this month (July).

      Hey Don,

The ping rep knew what he is talking about. A lot of players tend to open the clubface more of their wedges and lower irons more at address and therefore need a flatter color codes on those clubs. I have green color code 4-PW and have yellow color code on my wedges. I am going to have green color code 4-PW in the new Ie1’s and go blue color code on my new glide wedges (will prevent pulls left with my wedges).

Both of the irons seem to be missing the tuning port, or weight sticker all ping irons normally have to mod swing weight.

Looks like the same old stuff from Ping. Don’t get me wrong, they have good equipment. But Mizuno is so far ahead of them, gonna be tough catching up. Then you have Callaway and Titleist: Ping better get on the horse and ride!

The circle at the center of the Ping GMax irons looks like the Inverted Cone Technology Taylormade used in some of their irons.

That’s exactly what I thought as well. Ping’s copying TM irons. What has the world come to?

I was thinking that both of them look old school dime store.
I sure hope they play better than they look.

Gmax not a good looking club, the E1 is a lot better.
Ping usually has a quality product.

I play G20s. Look good play good. The Gmax is ugly, the E I could try. I am sure both will be a quality product since it is a Ping club.

Word is that the CFS Distance is actually the same shaft as regular CFS, just cut to slightly different lengths in the longer irons.

I little fine tuning? A cut here, a snip there, and maybe some weight shifting results in nothing major in terms of helping the average golfer. Save your money folks and keep playing the clubs you just learned how to hit.

I was thinking about getting a new set of irons this month, but I am going to wait until these come out now. I had a set of i5’s and loved them. These iE1s really look great to me.

Always great to see new stuff from an OEM that seems to get the players, holds it’s value and doesn’t flood the market with good. I love the looks of the new equipment.
