G/Fore Made High Tops for The Masters

G/Fore Made High Tops for The Masters

It’s been a disappointing Masters thus far.

I realize that might sound ridiculous considering the tournament hasn’t even started yet. There’s plenty to look forward to. Rory’s first Green Jacket? What about Bryson DeChambeau, the amateur with the weird clubs and awesome cap? Can old Phil play like young Phil? JDay is a solid pick, right?

I’d put my money…well, actually, I’d be more comfortable waging your money, on Dustin Johnson…and no, I’m not kidding. #1 in Strokes Gained putting last week. That really happened.

Disappointing Gear

So yeah, great things may lie ahead, but on the gear front, more specifically, the limited edition Season Opener/First Major/any other way to describe The Masters without saying The Masters front, gear has been disappointing.

gfore-young

Sure, Scotty did the same tired headcover thing (spoiler alert – they sold out), the parade of unoriginal staff bags marches on too, but it has largely been a disappointing year for commemorative creativity.  One bright spot…potentially the only bright spot in this year’s Masters-themed gear category comes from G/Fore, a company best known for its premium gloves worn by, among others, Bubba Watson, Tom Watson, Jonas Blixt, and Justin Timberlake.

For Bubba the company created a line of Augusta-themed footwear to go along with the gloves, the signature piece, which Watson may or may not wear, is a pair of mostly-Augusta-green high tops.

While we like to give credit to Nike Golf (Michelle Wie’s pink Blazers) for starting the trend that has led to the recent run of high tops, a G-Fore representative says the company’s inspiration actually comes from Yves Saint Laurent SL/10H Court Sneaker (which currently sells for $645 at Barney’s).

High fashion.

So yeah, I just mentioned Yves Saint Laurent in a story about a golf shoe. Kanye West fans feel free to rejoice while I attempt to drink enough to forget this ever happened.

The First?

It should also be pointed out that G/Fore first showed off the Crusader golf chassis (the foundation of the new high top) last summer, so there’s some legitimacy in the claim that G/Fore is ahead of this high top curve.

We expect the G/Fore Crusader will eventually make its way to retail, and while it probably won’t get the attention within the golf world that Nike, PUMA, and probably eventually adidas will get, the company is showing that neither creativity nor the golf high top is even close to dead.

We think that’s a good thing, but by all means, feel free to disagree.

The Masters are now prohibiting manufacturers from doing Masters themed items or anything that could be perceived to be linked with the event. Pretty sad as it should be a celebration for the seasons first major and all things green in my opinion!

Do not laugh but Faultless actually had some Lee Trevino cowboy boots with golf spikes back in the early 70s. They sent my Dad a set with him being a club pro. They were Red White and blue with big red stars on the side. I do not recall them ever being released to the public though.
Now on the high top golf shoes I have mentioned here before I would love them due to ankle issues. I played for years in Converse CTs and if I wear regular golf shoes I have to wear my ankle braces so this would be a welcome alternative for me and others I know with ankle issues

Couldn’t agree more. Very disappointed in the Limited addition masters gear that came out. I mean Adidas came out with blue and red shoes! Save that for the U.S. Open!! Where’s all the green and yellow!

I’d much rather have Adidas’ new shoes than these high tops.

They all are pretty bad. I wish Nike and puma did a masters green shoe this year.

Nathan – The Masters themselves are now clamping down hard on all manufacturers regarding LE Masters gear. Such a real shame but you’ll see less and less of any Limited green product at The Masters due to Augusta policy.

      Hey Don
Let’s wake up ! Unless you of course want to hang with Ken Venturi.
Those shoes are awesome and golf needs to grow in style and followers ! Or course after course is gonna close and golf will not flourish – which it should AND needs to !
Congrats to fashion like GFore which knows how and where to take Golf Style !!!

First, I like Ken Venturi. He was quite the golfer and human being. Sad that he passed away. Second, those green and white high tops are ugly. They are ugly and they are ugly. I doubt very highly that we are going to see anyone wearing those things on a golf course. Maybe that one guy who has a pristine set of $10,000.00 Honma’s, in a pro bag that couldn’t hit a ball over 100 yards. And finally, course after course is not going to close. That is just ‘chicken little sky is falling’ talk. We can talk about what will improve the popularity of the game. This kind of style is not it.

Those green G/Fore high tops are about the ugliest shoes I have ever seen. Ever. Have we jumped the shark on these ‘innovative’ shoe designs? I think WTF applies here.
