Golf Balls – Which Is The Best One For You?

“Improve Your Game Instantly….Get 20 More Yards Today” … YEAH SURE!

Ever Heard That Before?

If you haven’t heard a claim like this then most likely you don’t have a TV or have never picked up a golf magazine before. Remember back when titanium drivers first came out? Companies like Callaway and Taylormade seemed to be making claims like this every single year. Hopefully though you have realized by now that if there was still any truth to these marketing ploys…we would all be hitting 450 yard drives by now. Drivers are for the most part all within around 3-5 yards of each other now…so 9 times out of 10…”Don’t believe the hype”.

P.S. – $10 Coupon (PROMO CODE: OFFER999)

But…Now You Really Can Again (But Not From Driver Companies)

There is a way you can get lots more yardage off the tee and it doesn’t even cost near the investment of a $400 driver. But this piece of golf equipment is just as important. And…the company that can get you all this extra yardage isn’t even the one making the claims. That is because like us…they don’t believe in claims…they believe in results. And when it comes to results…there are not many companies that have tested more golf balls then GolfBallSelector.com. They have tested almost every golf ball a consumer can buy…and ranked and compared them all amongst 7 strict categories:

  • distance
  • feel
  • spin
  • hotness
  • compression
  • cover hardness
  • construction

GolfBallSelector.com then takes all this information and combines it with the tons of individual swing characteristic analysis they have performed…both with robot testing and real-world testing. A questionnaire is then answered which almost guarantees you results. (sneak-peek at some of the results)

The Man Behind The System

How can they get such accurate results without seeing your swing you say? Well just believe us…they can. Partly because of one of the men behind GolfBallSelector.com…his name is GolfBallSelector.com and he has been around golf for 40 years…both as a player and broadcaster but most importantly as a fanatic for equipment testing. And he has taken this 40 years of experience and put it directly into the GolfBallSelector testing system and golfer analysis questionnaire you can get yourself today. Mitch is one of the most respected men in the game of golf…not only for his experience in the game but also for his knowledge of the equipment.

So Why Should You Try This?

Well if you are a regular reader of MGS you probably read our piece on “How-To Get Fit The Right Way!” which covered many of the new ways made available for golfers to improve their game today. But the one constant negative about all the areas we covered in this series was the fact that many weren’t located in convenient areas or the cost of the service was just too high.

Try GolfBallSelector Today For Only $25

But GolfBallSelector.com has cut both of those hurdles out of the equation. That’s because believe it or not you can actually do this golf ball fitting right from the chair you are sitting in right now. And the cost is super cheap…its under $30 (And MyGolfSpy Readers Get $5 OFF) for a 1-Year Membership. And many times the ball that it suggests for you…actually saves you money. So this might end up actually saving you more money then you spend today. So there really is no reason not to try it.

So How Much Do You Think A Golf Ball Can Impact Your Game?

I found the golf ball selector to be bogus. No matter what combination of information I entered, it told me to buy Titlest Pro V1.

I took the Bridgestone swing test a month ago. The e-6 and e-7 both worked for me. Yes I was suprised. However on the green they both gave me trouble coming off the putter way to
hot. So , for me it turned out to be a push. In the end I stuck with my Pro V from 120 yards in.
In casual play I ended up being one of the guys that changes the ball after the tee shot. Oh well. Maybe next years gear.

I got fitted at the ball test. Yes my ego took a hit. But not my wallet. The e-6 lowered my shot and gave me 5-10 yards on my t-ball. Next time through the local shop it’s a box of e-6 that leaves with me.

Almost every time it saves you money on the ball you are playing. So many golfers are playing the wrong ball similar to playing the wrong equipment as well.

HERE IS AN EASY AND CHEAP WAY TO TELL A QUALITY MADE BALL. NO MATTER WHAT BRAND. EPSON SALT, . GET A FAIRLY LARGE BOWL ,FILL WITH HOT WATER. ADD SALT AND STIR UNTIL IT MIXES WELL. ADD A FEW DROPS OF ANTI-SPOT DISHWASHER TREATMENT TO MAKE THE MIX SLIPPERY. DROP IN A BALL. IF IT WON’T FLOAT ADD MORE EPSON SALT UNTIL IT DOES. PUT A SPIN ON THE BALL AND WAIT. MARK WITH INK THE HIGH SPOT ON THE BALL AND LET INK DRY. REPEAT THROUGH THE WHOLE BOX. AFTER THE INK IS DRY SPIN THE BALL IN THE WATER AGAIN. IF THE MARK SHOWS UP ON TOP OF THE BALL YOU HAVE A BALL THAT IS HEAVY TO THE OTHER SIDE. DON’T TOSS IT THOUGH, NOW THAT YOU NOW HOW IT’S WEIGHTED YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT.
ON STRAIGHT PUTTS YOU WANT THE WEIGHT ROLLING END OVER END FOR A TRUE ROLL.
NOW THE FUN STUFF. TRY A 10′ PUT BREAKING LEFT. WANT TO TAKE OUT SOME BRAKE?
AFTER YOU MARK AND LIFT. WHEN YOU PUT IT BACK SET IT WITH THE HEAVY SIDE ON THE RIGHT. IN EFFECT YOU HAVE TAKEN SOME BREAK OUT BECAUSE THE BALL WILL RESIST TURNING. THIS ALSO WORKS ON TEE SHOTS TO SOME DEGREE. EXPERIMENT WITH WHAT I CALL BREAKS+SETS ON THE PUTTING GREEN. IT’S KIND OF LIKE A MAJOR LEAGUE
PITCHER THROWING AN ASSORTMENT OF PITCHES. HAVE FUN WITH IT. NOW THE BALL THAT IS SPUN IN THE WATER AND HAS THE MARK IN A DIFFERENT POSITION EVERY TIME?
THAT ONE IS A GREAT T-BALL AND WILL ROLL TRUE ON THE GREEN EVERY TIME. SOMETIME IT’S THE BALL TO GO WITH . SOMETIMES NOT. DEPENDS ON THE PLAYERS’ ABILITY/ COURSE KNOWLEDGE [ ON A DOGLEG FAIRWAY YOU MAY WANT TO BE CREATIVE, OR A SLOPEING GREEN]. MORE TURN , LESS TURN, STRAIGHT ??? IT’S UP TO YOU, TRICKSHOT. CAVEAT: KEEP THIS TO YOUR SELF UNTIL SOMEONE ASKED ABOUT YOUR IMPROVED PUTTING. [ I SAVE 2-3 PUTTS PER ROUND, WHICH LEAVES SOME BREATHING ROOM ON SOMETHING ELSE]. IF YOU TELL YOUR BUDDIES DURING A ROUND YOU’LL BE BLAMED FOR SOME LOUSY SHOTS. AND RIGHTLY SO. 20 YEARS AGO EVEN A QUALITY CO LIKE TITLELIST WOULD ONLY HAVE 2-3 IN BALANCE PER BOX. THIS HAS GREATLY IMPROVED OVER THE YEARS. THE SHOT/BALL FLIGHT COMBOS THAT YOU CAN COME UP WITH IN A 4 MAN SCRAMBLE BECOME ENDLESS WHEN YOU ARE LIFTTING AND PLACING THE BALL ALL DAY. PLAYING ON WINDY DAYS IS KIND OF A CHESS MATCH WITH
MOTHER NATURE. YOU’D BE SUPRISED HOW MUCH YOU CAN WORK CROSS WINDS USING THIS TECHNIQUE. HAVE FUN ……. THROWADART

“Parker I think you would be very surprised at the results.”
Have to agree with MGS based solely on the earlier data that Gary collected.
I tried tofind the old data, but alas the tables are now gone and only reviews are available.
That said – I prefer a more hands on approach rather than a Golf Digest type review where I have to read between the lines to see if something might work for me.
Their best business model, imo, would be to have the old charts with the moveable data for you to compare every offering and additionally provide their recommendations of the top five balls for you based on an “honest” appraisal of our own abilities.

I suppose if you shop for golf balls at Wal Mart you might need a service like this. If you shop at a golf store where the staff are informed about golf balls all they need to do is ask you some questions and then recommend a ball. It’s not rocket science.

Well one problem with that…many of the staff at your local shops have no more knowledge then you do. They get all their info from the reps for the companies that sell the balls…so it is still biased info your being fed.

And that is what we are hear to stop. We want our readers to stop listening to the marketing and actually put the different items to the test.

Am I out of line to say that I’m skeptical about this? Are people so hungry for extra distance that they’ll pay 30 bucks to take a questionnaire online that will tell them what ball they should be using? I totally agree that playing the right ball for your game is important, but as long as your honest with yourself about your swing speed and your skill level, you just need to do some research into which balls are made for people at your skill level. I’m sorry to be the only one questioning the necessity of this service, but I feel most golfers should be spending money on lessons and instruction instead of spending it on things like this. I love My Golf Spy, and I’m always interested in the products and services they recommend, so I’m really sorry to be the party pooper on this one. No offense whatsoever to Gary Mayes. I have much respect for all he’s accomplished in the golf industry.

Parker I think you would be very surprised at the results. The guys behind GolfBallSelector are some of the best in the business.

You can get more distance out of a ball change then a driver or shaft change more often then not. We really try to cover things that could benefit you guys. Not saying to give it a try…but if you can;t maybe go and try to get fit locally at a GolfGalaxy or Golfsmith or other fitting studio set-up for ball testing…I think you would be amazed.

Parker, several years ago, Hale Irwin was doing quite well on the Senior Tour. He switched irons and his play declined. When a reporter asked what was going on with his game, his response was ‘I just recently switched irons and I’m trying to find the right ball for my new irons’. Slowly but surely his game improved, but not quite to the level before he changed irons. I’m not saying Golf Ball Selector is fool-proof, but you have to understand that not every ball on the market is going to respond exactly the same with drivers, irons, or even putters. There are some subtle and clear differences, in my opinion.

The real credit for this company should be Gary Mayes who instituted one of the most comprehensive studys year in, year out that was previously available, although slightly different, on his web site – equip2golf. Gary was kind enough to engage me in numerous emails prior to his teaming up with Mitch to launch the pay venture. The #’s that he had collected and the way you could rearrange them according to which propertys that you wanted was outstanding. I actually played a few different brands based on the data he presented and was never let down.
I haven’t ponied up the money to see what the new site offers – it would be great to have a q&a with mitch or gary to better understand the new model. The money is less than what I pay for my Cally ix’s, which I think is an outstanding ball. ;-)
If it is as good as Garys prior work then one would not be disappointed in the results.

I never thought a ball, especially one of the more expensive ones would really make a difference to my game. It does!! I can now feel and see the difference between the mid priced and the higher priced balls besides the cost. One caveat however is that unless your game is at least decent, it will make no differnce what kind of ball you use. A longer, viscious slice is a slice none the less. Perhaps a service of this type can help find the right ball for your game without having to pay for the highest priced ball.

Even golfers with higher handicaps can see drastic improvements actually. This service allows you to tailor to balls that will also improve accuracy. Depending on the cover and materials used…will majorly effect different types of swings.
