Golf Digest – Responds To MyGolfSpy Hot List Article

And The “Hot List” Debate Heats Up!

Well not from our end.  We stated our side of the debate on whether or not the Golf Digest “Hot List” should be re-named the “Cold List” or maybe even the “Mediocre List”.  We actually have much more information to offer about the “Hot List” from many of the companies that sent equipment in and others who work in the industry that can directly dispute the fact that Golf Digest still claims its list to be un-bias and not effected by their major advertisers.  We will leave that for another day…don’t think they could handle the onslaught of emails and calls after this additional info gets released.

For now though…you can go check out the “Hot List” judge who responded to our article regarding their “Golf Digest – 2011 Cold List”. If you have an opinion about the “Hot List” we would love to hear how you feel…post a comment on our site and the Golf Digest article as well.  Have your voice be heard!

My name is Adam Beach. This place, this site, it’s more than just a business to me, it truly is an expression of who I am and what I believe in, down to my core. I feel the work I do is a reflection of who I am and the idea behind the work I do is more important than the work itself. You see, I don’t actually see myself in the golf business at all, I am in the business of caring. I am a guy who wakes up with one goal: do the right thing.

I would love to see an entirely separate issue for the hot list. I don’t want to read two sentences praising callaways latest turd on a stick. Honestly, go get a launch monitor and show people hard data. Sure it felt fantastic, but as far as I know, it than proceded to fly out onto that road that’s 400ft OB. Show some real data with different shaft combos too. Also, let the panelists write paragraphs about how they felt and have each panelist do their own ‘mini hot list’ and get rid of all of the influence from OEMs

I just looked at the “hot list” very disappointed. Callaway gets top honors in irons for a rebadge product from last year. Lets face it if they bad mouth any of the big OEM companies there goes the advertising dollars out the window. I would like to hear from some teachers about what they feel are the best options for different skill levels. ie if your handicap is 15-20 here are the 3 best options for you. The way it is now just post it as advertisements

I am a long time reader and subscriber, I love the mag for the stories on the players and the locations, dreaming of a golf trip I see photographed in the pages. I sure as heck do not read because of the reviews and especially the hot list. I am sorry if I offend with my comments, and I by no means am trying to belittle your job. Heck, I think you can’t win no matter what you do, it’s a tough position. The winners are 100% influenced by your advertisers, you would have to be stupid not to see it as a reader. Marketing is meant to sell, and the large companies flex their muscle in the magazine, the tv, radio, internet, and of course your Hot List. I am sorry, it’s the position you guys have created for yourself.

You have left out many great companies in every category. I am not going into some infomercial by listing everything, but I am sure lots of folks can come up with 5-10 companies right away with out thinking about. Does it mean the big OEM make junk, heck no, they have money to research everything, and a lot of their product is great. I myself own a Ping G15 driver I wouldn’t trade for anything, the perfect fit for me. But what’s perfect for me, isn’t perfect for the next guy.

They say print is dead, I say no. I think you at Golf Digest need to refocus the publication.

The magazine can still, and should feature equipment, you have to stay in business. What the magazine should focus is the players, the interviews, the stories of golf, the history, the courses, the destinations, how to get more people interested, the fun aspect of golf and getting people involved in the sport. Equipment should not be a focus, because it could never be unbiased.

You need someone to help turn things around, give me a call! John Barry

I too have abandoned any credibility with the Hot List. Tnx to the web, I now get real info on things like which shafts and what length in which heads with which grips. Let’s face it, there is not much change in tech advances in heads, it is now all about the shaft. A four year old driver head will seem like a miracle breakthrough with a new fitted shaft.

Wouldn’t most of us usually be better off with an “Avoid these like the plague” list?

Bulseye Golf Spy…Just sample the comments for driver as an example. The 14 tested were: best looking driver ever; a freakin rocket; hot spicy sound and trajectory; hang time is awesome; easy to hit and tons of carry; scary long; distance is superb; easy to hit and hit long; ceisp and explosive; looks loke a bullet coming out of a barrel; straight even on mis-hits; the ball just flew off the face; the best marriage of head and shaft; launches high…and keeps on going.

Useless…What ever happened to the comments I hear around the clubhouse by real golfers: I can’t hit this damn thing; not as long as my two year old clone; sounds like crap and feels worse; I wasted a ton of money on this piece of junk.

I thought it seemed strange when Cialis received a Gold Medal.

Why dont just give 1 gold medal, 1 silver and 1 bronze, and then give ratings, pros and cons against the winners, for the rest.
But you has to choose Winners period. Maybe if its to close to call then give 2 silver or 2 golds but just 3 places!!

Every years looks worst that the BCS bowls selections!!

We The players just want it more distance, more forgiviness, accuracy and the best relation between those 3 and the price… If my driver looks like the pink panther and sounds like a winnie the poh scream but gives me 30 more yards or it helps hit more farways who cares if is pink or made of oak or moonstones… And if We can get a set of irons 200 cheaper that the leader brands with almost the same performance so thats a winner, anyway those are the things that a good proshop seller will tell us at the end anyway

GD has all the data available to them. I am sure the USGA would give them specs. Or even better. GD ought to buy an Iron Byron and test the equipment themselves. Give the data out on all the clubs. Ah.. that would be biting the hand that feeds them. The golf mags have a fine line to walk. You go bashing.. then OEM’s pull the ads.

This is where the golf blogs come in. The OEM’s can’t pull opinons.

P Gunna hits it right on the spot. My Golf Spy’s response was right on. Most Golf Sites walk on egg shells in the review, that’s why 57% are gold. Gold/Silver lose meaning when they are given out like this. Do they really think we are that ignorant?

I stopped paying attention to this GD Hot List and pay more attention to sites like My Golf Spy and Rankmark and common golfers reviews.

You have to question anyone getting money (directly or indirectly thru advertising) from the products they are reviewing.

The hot list barely provides any data from those tests, slapping medals on major manufacturers offerings with a couple of comments from a high handicapper and a low handicapper just doesn’t cut it anymore. We want to make informed decisions and your list has no information to speak of.

      Golf Digest should either:
      A) Take this criticism and improve the hot list
      B) Ignore the haters

Making a whiny article refuting blog posts is pretty pathetic.

Gunna, what is wrong with GD responding? It is not just criticism but rather accusations they are trying to refute. You would not do the same?

They go through an incredible amount of effort to bring this out every year. I agree it ain’t what it once was…but could be. They just need to bring me in to make it what it should be.
