100,000 Sold…But Have You Ever Used One? (Golf Groove Tools)

Golf Groover announces sale of it’s 100,000th groove sharpener

Put Some Grooves Back in That ‘Ol ButterKnife

Most of us aren’t good enough ball strikers to wear a consistent pattern like you see on all the pro’s wedges…okok we know you can…but…many golfers can’t. So for all the rest of us that use the WHOLE face we say to you, “learn how to get your money’s worth out of your wedges….and use all the wedge”.  Actually we are just kidding, try to become better and make a small pattern.

Well, whether you’re a great ball striker or a guy that swings like a righty trying to play lefty…you have all owned an iron or a wedge that has grooves worn down to the point it is better off used as a butterknife then a sandsave weapon…so what do you do with it? Well in the past you took it to the local golf shop an got yourself a crisp $5 bill for trade-in to use towards a shiny new one.

Growing In Popularity

Well the Golf Groover and about 32 other people that have jumped on the “golf club groove sharpening” bandwagon say those days are over. And from the looks of all the options we had sent to us to try they might be right. I never thought that there would be so many garage tinkerers interested in refurbishing a $50 wedge. Well then again, in today’s economy anyway to save a buck is understandable. And I really think all the options we tried, actually do work. But how well?

Groove Sharpeners Tested:

golfgroover

1. GolfGroover.com (Cheaper On EBAY)

  • Quality = B+
  • Did It Work = A-
  • Price = C-
  • How Easy = B+
  • OVERALL = B

Comments – Like the handle…makes it easier to manage. Great to use even as just a groove cleaner and not a sharpener on the course during play

groove sharpener

2. GrooveSharpener.com (Cheaper On EBAY)

  • Quality = C
  • Did It Work = B+
  • Price = B
  • How Easy = B-
  • OVERALL = B-

Comments – It worked well…just don;t like the fact it does not have a handle. It can slip and scratch the face of your clubs. You can use tape to cover but just takes longer. Overall though it worked well.

IZZO Groove Sharpener

3. IZZO Groove Sharpener

  • Quality = C-
  • Did It Work = B+
  • Price = A+
  • How Easy = B
  • OVERALL = B

Comments – This one is the cheapest by a long shot only costs $9.95 compared to $19.95-$29.95 for the others. It worked for us fine but I don’t think it will hold up for more then a season or two. But…if you need something unique to get someone for Christmas this might be the one.

Hi,

Good article – I have used the 1 from http://www.golfgroover.com and also from groovesharpenner.com.

I found the golfgroover.com far superior – I have large hands and the 1 from groovesharpenner.com was a nightmare to use – I actually found it made my fingers sore – it is so small.

OK – the 1st one is a little extra – but I found it money well spent.

Keep up the spying.

Thanks Ted! BTW…love your email address…we got a good laugh out of that. And I agree with your observation. Both work but the first one is much easier on the hands.

Quick Question: Why do you own both of them?

Hi Spy,

I bought the smaller 1 first – but had the problems as above – so then bought the one from http://www.golfgroover.com

Ted

PS. When you say you agree with my observations – I am sure you are relating to the groove sharpeners and not my “dream observation” contained within my email address – Ha Ha !

Yes these tools really do work. The best one so far has been the Wedge Doctor. Very comfortable to use with a very good cutting edge. I bought mine right from their website at http://www.wedgedoctor.com and I think they are on ebay as well.

I bought the Golf Groover from the UK. Agree that it works quite well, although it has a tendency to slip and I have scratched my wedges a bit.

Howdy all,

The best one without a doubt is the one from http://www.golfgroover.com.

Very professionally made.

The ones from groovesharpener and wedgedoctor are junk. I have personally used the wedge doctor and my golf buddy used to own the groove sharpener one. Both of these have ended up in the bin.

Neither of us have used the golf club medic one – however judging by the picture the blade looks as thin as a stanley knife blade – won’t last 5 mins.

Buy the best – buy golf groover.

Peter.

I received the one from http://www.golfgroover.com as a birthday present from my husband. It certainly made a big difference to my short game. I use it whenever the grooves close up – after every 10 rounds or so.

It is excellent – a big thank you !

I have one I bought at a retail store several years ago…It really looks like…and is made to look like…a screwdriver..except out at the end, where it has 3 “u” blades and 3 “v” blades. Seems to work ok, except hard to keep the proper blade in the slot.
I saw on ebay one which has 3 blades, arranged in a row so you can clean 3 grooves at a time…everyone has an angle I guess.

I have not seen those yet Doc.

I just looked it up on ebay again…Made by “wedge doctor” and actually has 3 tips(blades) on each end. Priced at around $25.00…Interesting, but I’ll leave testing it out up to you! lol

PS.. I’d like to know if anyone has commented on the significant differences between r7 and r9. I also wondered if you have a page or location on the format where one can go to ask any questions…I am probably blind, but havn’t been able to spot a particular page…(hence, this question)
Thanks

We have a small shop here in Chicago and have used the Golfgroover.com product which does the job but when it got dull after 2 clubs I gave it to a buddy who works in a metal shop. He tested the metal and it in not A2 tool steel as advertised. Bottom line is they will all dull after use, but don’t over pay for product that is not as advertised.

Hi,

We are the top consumer magazine in Europe. We regularly test numerous products and pass on our findings to our readers who are consumers. All the above groove sharpeners were tested by ourselves for functionality and also for material construction analysis.

The best of the groove sharpeners – by some way – was the Golf Groover. Easier to use than the others, it is the only one with a depth gauge within the tool head. We found the other sharpeners ended up cutting the grooves too deeply – resulting in clubs that would disqualify the user if used in competition. Also the tool steel used to form the Golf Groover tool head came out tops in our Rockwell analysis test.

Hope the above info is useful.

Sincerely

Jeff Cane

I saw a TV commercial last Tuesday and Thursday on Sky Channel 216 featuring http://www.groovesharpeners.com they were advertising Groove Sharpeners, the described as above. I looked on their site and bought one to try it, and low and behold, it worked! I have a Vokey 64 lob wedge and was dubious about usint it, as was scared it would scratch or ruin my club but it’s done the opposite!

I can’t praise this site and tool enough, it’s certainly good enough to feature on a TV advertisement.

Bottom line… if you want more spin and to prolong the life of your clubs, visit http://www.groovesharpeners.com

I purchased a triple blade groove tool (three adjacent blades for quicker use) from Jack at Golfgroove.com. I asked Jack in an email if the spacing between the blades would match my DCI Titleist Black Irons and he replied “Yes – we have had customers with the same clubs who have used the triple blade version with great success.” A full month later the triple blade arrived. The spacing did not match my clubs and one of the blades tools was broken. All Jack could come up with to help me find a solution was this “Your abusive attitude to us right from the outset leads me to conclude that you have planned this from the start.” So I guess don’t ask him if it will work for you or he’ll think you damaged it and magically changed the spacing just so you could wait another month to get a usable tool. Thanks Jack!

Thanks

I bought the 1 from golfgroover.com 3 years ago and it still does the job to this day.

Excellent tool.
