iSwing App – Hits #1 Sports App in US

There almost isn’t a single day that I come to work not to find an email in my inbox from a new iPhone app developer trying to promote their product to the MyGolfSpy readers.  I actually investigate every single one of them just in case I come across a hidden gem.   And that is exactly what we came across the other day.  And after doing some research about this particular one…I  found out this thing is becoming huge already in the Asian market. The iSwing has actually already broken into the top 5 most downloaded apps in Japan and stands currently at #1 in Korea.

“The success we’ve seen in Asia is translating well to the US where golf can be an expensive pastime. Professional swing analysis can cost an average of $60 per visit. And for the price of a bucket of range balls, one can analyze their swing on a device they already carry in their pocket…”, says Charlie Keum, CEO and Founder of iSwing.

The iSwing also recently just hit the #1 spot in the US…not only as a golf app but for all the sports apps in the entire iPhone App Store!  This thing is being downloaded over a thousand times every single week.

So what is this thing all about?  And why is it so popular?

Well the reason this app seems to have caught so much attention and become so popular is pretty simple.  They took a technology that already existed in the golf world and made it cheaper, easier to use and more convenient for the golfer to download.  So kind of a no-brainer why so many people are downloading this one.

  • More Affordable – Currently professional golf swing analysis software would cost you anywhere between $60-$100.  Their version…the iSwing only costs $5.99.  Much more affordable.
  • More Convenient – It is more convenient…because it is easier to download and you can take it with you anywhere you go.  It makes it much more appealing to golfer. And  no more having to lug around a video camera to the course and figure out a way how to record your swing.
  • Easier To Use – it has the same functionality as a computer based model (video, frame-by-frame images- slow-motion playback, touch screen line drawing, etc) although it almost does all the work for you.  And it also syncs up with your Facebook account (w/Facebook Connect) allowing you to publish your swing online with high-res photos.

How It Works

Wanna see if you have a flaw in your swing?  The iSwing will do just that…and for only $5 bucks.

  • The iSwing iPhone application allows you to record your golf swing on video and replay it frame-by-frame in slow motion and analyze your flaws by drawing lines on the screen to make sure your “on-plane” throughout your swing.
  • It creates a frame-by-frame sequence of photos like the Golf Digest centerfolds you see that can be used as a virtual reference, or that you can share with your friends viaFacebook Connect.
  • The app then assesses the sequence according to this lines and indicates areas of weakness or problems with your swing.
  • It also provides a built-in diary so you can save each and every swing recording.
  • Then the twenty-frame sequences created from the video clips can also be shared via the built-in email function or through a one-touch link up with Facebook too.

And what is even cooler about iSwing is that it records video even with models that don’t have video functionality.  So if you are looking for a swing analysis software…it makes it hard to argue with the $5 price tag.  The simplicity of this app is great.  And it will also be coming out for the Android soon as well.

Customer Reviews:

this definetely helped my swing
by BennyPockets
i’m glad i trusted oshdiddy’s review, short as it was. i had gotten something like this done by a pro a few years back, i loved it then (cost $150). i had been waiting for something like this to come out. it’s really cool, i can see what i look like when i swing and see what i’m doing wrong.

Just paid $100 at a Pro Shop to have precisely this done!
by Hakyun
Just paid $100 at a Pro Shop to have precisely this done! Filmed my swing from different angles exactly like this, the only difference is, I didn’t get to keep the video! With this App I can track the progress of my swing, without having to pay each time. Great App! great use of the camera! Why didn’t I think of this?

Perfect App…
by Couple2tree
for any golfer. I’ve been wanting to take pictures of my swing with the iPhone for a while and during the attempts, the shutter would release at all the wrong times. This is a great training aid and the ability to draw out the lines and angles to compare with other golfers is an invaluable tool. The ability to watch your swing in a short movie form is awesome. For those serious about their game, I don’t see another app out there that can directly help with your golf swing. Love it.

When I was at teh LD Championship a guy had an app like this on his phone. It was kool watching Jamie Sadlowski’s swing. The apps offered to turn the cell phone into a Sky Caddie is pretty kool also. These apps are killing Garnin and the rest of the GPS biys. I guess it is time to upgrade to a smart phone.

great synopsis. seems like myiswing was closer to 15 fps. i might be wrong.
but aside from the fps, it takes 11 seconds to get to playback, and when im teaching i don’t have that time. i’d prefer less frames vs waiting for the playback to load.

iswing is just much better for me.

easier to use, faster, less fps however, but not a big trade-off when you need instant feedback.

I just found the answer to my own question for those interests…. The the Frames Per Second (FPS) of both applications, as advertised by the programers, are listed as follows.

      MyiSwing — 30 FPS

      iSwing = 10 FPS

I went the “MyiSwing” route because it utilizes the native video function within the phone instead of multiple camera snap shots. (For some reason, I thought the native video function will capture more frames/second).

Another feature I like about the “MyiSwing” is the ability to trim video recordings before storing them. (A lot of people take a while before actually making a swing).

I’m pretty sure “MyiSwing” does not have the sequencing capabilities, but for me, I feel like more frames/second is more important for me.

Can anyone confirm the precision/accuracy of both of these apps?

I saw that one too, its actually .99 cents, but doesn’t look as good as the iSwing. I think there might be a reason why it used to free ;)

Hey daz, you dont have to wait that long actually. It even works on non video iPhones (3g and 2g). They do something similar to iVideo, its like a video recorder made for non video iPhones.

Looks like a crackerjack app that, my iPhone upgrade is available in a couple of months so I’ll be getting the 3GS then (got the 3G right now). I’m assuming that it needs the 3GS because of the video capability? would make sense.
      I really enjoy this site, it’s A1.

      hey hittin par,
MyiSwing is not bad. But from what people say, its not as easy to use as iSwing. But the choice is up to you on that end.

Thanks for the review…. looks like a great app. Have you guys assessed the other golf swing app called “MyiSwing”…? I already have that app and it seems to do a lot of the same things…. Is it worth the download if I already have the other app?

I have not tried the MyiSwing yet. We are just starting to get into covering the app side of golf. We have been debating covering more. What do you think?

This app definitely has quite a bit of buzz going on Daniel. I think for the golfers looking to analyze their swings and not have to carry any extra equipment to the course this is a great one.
