MGS Tested: Golf’s Most Wanted Mallet Putter2015: Meet The Mallets

Most Wanted Mallet Putter 2015

Last week we unveiled the Carbon Putters Ringo 1/4 as the Most Wanted Blade of 2015. This week, the competition shifts to the larger putter brethren, the mallets!

We have assembled 28 mallet putters from various manufacturers and put them to the #Datacratic test to determine if any of them can actually help you to make more putts.

We have putters from the large manufacturers, as well as some from small putter shops you may be hearing about for the first time today. All are on equal footing. All of them have the chance to be the 2015 Most Wanted Mallet.

How We Tested: Strokes Gained

Mallet Extras-1

Like we did with the blades last week, we will be assessing mallet accuracy by measuring strokes gained. We will be scoring the mallets based upon the number of strokes that are needed to get the ball into the hole. Like we said with the blades:

We don’t want a putter that always gets it close, we want on that always puts it in!

When all is said and done, we are able to see which putters promote poor, average, or excellent performance in the hands of our testers. A truly Most Wanted putter is one that allows our players to gain strokes on the field.

For more details about the test itself, visit our How We Test page.

good lineup- Ketsch(s) look to be favorites, but I’m interested to see what happens. hoping for good showings by the Wilsons, particularly the Southside- I’ve been wanting to get my hands on one since they came out.
also, why not even a little blurb about each of the putters?

I think you need help defining mallet before you decide you are going to run a deciding the best mallet. You have no credibility on these putter tests. Lame.

I think the putter test is due for a revamp. Blade vs Mallet will not provide valid results. You can have a face balanced blade and you can have a toe hang mallet. The stroke style of these putters are vastly different, especially in the mallet category.

To be fair, most players have no idea their preference for putter or style of stroke. It just seems it would be more honest to fit the putter to the individual prior to testing.

I am disappointed not to see the golo 5. Recently bought one and I love it, but the Futura was a close 2nd. I have tried the Ketsch several times based on last year’s test and it just never lined up right to my eye.

I’m not sure I understand the calculation methodology. Specifically, I don’t know why 50 “holes” is used in the denominator for the initial average. Is that just a typo? Should it be 5?

I’d like to replicate this test with some putters I am trying to decide between, so I just want to make sure I understand the calculation. It seems pretty straightforward if the 50 is just a typo.

50 holes came from 10 testers x 5 holes at each distance

Ok, thanks. The “how we test” page said 20 for the # of testers, but I see now that this page said 10. I appreciate the reply.

Some really cool looking putters on this list. I don’t carry a mallet because of pride reasons, but I’m pretty sure I could benefit from one.

No SeeMore? Bummer. Lots of Ping and SmartSquare options. Would have liked to seen other shapes and types rather than 3 different SmartSquares.

Companies were invited to submit as many putters as they wished. Some took advantage of this, others did not.

If you are not seeing a company represented that you like, feel free to encourage them to participate more next year. Tweets can do wonders…

BTW: Did you make a copy/paste error with the Cleveland Smart Square and Smart Square CB? The photos are the exact same for both.

Its very close but if you look at the pictures of the bottoms of the two clubs, the regular one says 360g and the cb says 400g.

Now here is a review I am looking forward to. I bought a Ketsch because of the review of this site and it has been a staple in my bag since. I would be curious to see if I now have to buy a new putter.
