Hands On Yonex N1-MB Iron

I just stumbled across our first really fun find of the 2016 PGA show.

Check out the Yonex N1-MB hitting retail in April.

The N1-MB is designed to offer cavityback performance in a more compact blade design.

wpid-20160126_110843.jpg

The blade itself is ever-so-slightly oversized – longer from heel to toe – but it doesn’t stray far from the traditional. The one exception is the graphite insert in the back cavity, which helps to dampen vibration while pushing the CG lower for higher launch.

I spent some time hitting the iron (because I really liked it hitting it) and found it to be buttery soft and a lot easier to hit than a blade should be. It’s definitely one we plan to spend a bit more time with this season.

Be on the lookout for more from Yonex. Retail price for the N1MB is $225 per iron.

Just bought a set in the UK . I had previously moved to Ping S55 after a lifetime of playing with forged blades, but they felt clunky.
These Yonex N1 MB irons are delicious. The smoothest contact I ever felt in 45 years of golf, all at low single figure handicap level.
The ball flight is strong, and they cut through the turf like a dream. They just make you want to trap it hard, and the marginally larger face gives you lots of confidence.
My misses tend to be low or high on the face, rather than toe or heel, and I must say that the loss of distance is minimal, with little impact vibration, even when you catch one a little thin. The graphite insert does its stuff….smooth as silk and orgasmic when you pure it.
Yes, the price tag is high, but if golf is your passion and you want that traditional buttery feel of a forged blade, with the most modern, up to date tech, then get your cheque book out……YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED

I am currently playing a set of Super ADX Tour forged irons I stared playing just as a goof because I found them in a garage and now I bag them full time. I would be interested to see these in person!

The only possible “new magic” in these heads is the polymer insert, because the head shape looks to be an almost exact copy of a 30 YEAR OLD Titleist, the 1987 Tour Model Box Blade. Or of the Titleist Tour Model (1991-1997). Or of the Titleist 690MB (2002-04). You can see all the old Titleist models and specs at titleist.com/previous-models. And nearly all of the major OEM’s over the past 30+ years have produced, at some time, a model or models that visually, look almost identical. In blades, there is almost nothing that hasn’t already been done as far as shape is concerned.

If you love golf and play a lot then $225 per iron is no big deal. And Yonex quality is well worth the expense.

That’s a pretty iron. I’m looking forward to the review but they’ve completely priced themselves out of the market, I wonder if they are trying to be Miura, except “Yonex” doesn’t carry that level of brand caché. It just reminds me of the tennis shorts my parents forced me to wear when I was 12.

Yonex makes quality sporting goods. Their tennis equipment is widely used by many of the top ranked professional and amateur players around the world. Last I checked, the only guy using Yonex equipment on the “real” PGA tour switched equipment companies from Yonex two seasons ago. I would venture to say that move was both “supply/service based” as well as motivated by the leaf-pile of money he was offered to become a “brand ambassador” of the other company. It might be a different story for Yonex had Phil kept playing their gear…(maybe they would have had the same size tour support staff at say Mizuno, etc…) but that is clearly only one of the issues faced by Yonex. These look like a really nice MB forged offering. I play a set of clubs that look similar to these once I get my swing back in the late-spring…that said, the single biggest issue with these is that difference in cost between these and say…a set of Mizuno MP4’s or even MP 69’s. Here is a bit of perspective: eBay item number:390965562169; Brand new set of MP 69 irons, 4-PW SIP….$550…..That would be (2) irons in this set……..Comedy.

Look up the 1978 Wilson Reflex irons. What goes around, comes around. I always maintained that the Japanese were great manufacturers but they have very little original thinking.

Would love to try one out. In 1987 or so I paid what was then thought to be an outrageous $ 200.00 for one of their first graphite drivers and immediately won three long drive contests in a row!! i’d take their technology advances VERY seriously!! $225 per iron is chump change– all I need is 5-PW. Not much more than a TM M-1 driver, fairway and hybrid setup.

I understand that the irons are 225 but that’s only 1500 a set of Pw-4. That’s not the cheapest irons on the market but its only about 300-400 more than a new set of shitty TM irons. I really think if they used good materials in the irons and the technology is actually effective the price point isn’t that bad. Also I am sure once they hit the market if they are not selling like they expect, I am sure they will lower the price to push them out the door. So don’t think a a couple hundred dollars more is such a big deal. I see people complain that TM puts out way to much equipment and its no good, when Yonex a quality iron producer puts out a good iron that’s a little pricy we complain? All im saying is parsons irons are 3000 dollars a set and they look like shit. These look awesome and are half the price, if parsons golf put this iron out with this price tag they would sell like crazy. Its like when a woman is shopping, if they see a product marked down from $200 to $100 they think their getting a deal and buy it. Next time you buy your new set of Titlest blades and they run you 1200 bucks not including custom options don’t kick yourself for not looking at something different .

Look like my MP-4’s with a muscle cavity filled with some type of polymer. A muscle back look that will appeal to better players, but the cost will keep most looking at muscle backs from Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, etc at a more acceptable $1,100/set +\-.

Yonex is certainly not a new brand; they have been around for ages and are heavily diversified into sports equipment like Mizuno. Also like Mizuno their products tend to be very serious with a minimum of hoohaa / fanfare. Like most Japanese brands their products are of surprising top quality performing outside the bells and whistles stance of today’s brands. Japan and the Asia Pacific region is such a huge market for Japanese brands that they frequently do not need to look beyond for additional market share. Those that do; aim at the European market and are mostly more popular in Europe than the US. All said and done the $225 price tag is atrocious and akin to Honma’s pricing. Honma is a very high quality but very expensive Japanese brand. If anyone is interested in an iron that offers top Japanese quality, fantastic performance and value for money; check out the Srixon Z545 ….. You will surely be pleasantly surprised if not shocked with the performance ……

Looks great – would love to hit them, but at $225 a club, it doesn’t matter what they feel like. Just not willing to pour that kind of money into a set of irons. Especially for a second tier club maker without a considerable track record.
I’m sure there will be comments that Yonex is legit – I’m sure they are, but my point is that the top club makers come out of Titleist, Ping, Callaway, Mizuno, Nike and Taylormade. Are there great clubs coming out of Hogan, Yonex, Bridgestone, Adams – yes, but if they price them at $225 a stick, then they’ll always be seen as a status club, not a performance club.
An 8-club set will set you back $1800!! Are you frickin’ kidding me! The club had better hit itself for that kind of money….wow, the audacity is alarming.

They remind me a bit of Ping s58 except forged – And everything now is trying to be cavity performance with blade appearance. The term “buttery soft” is way overused and does not really mean much – except that they feel like a well struck Mizuno MP. There are LOTS of great forgings out there that do not cost $225 – and while they look pretty, the design is really not too different from anything else trying to accomplish the same thing.

Graduated from golf business about 5 years now, and see those product news reminds me local industry confusioness.
And feels some kind of sympasy toward Yonex marketing team, I know some names actually…
Tough business for local supplier against mass marketing brands still continue and seems Yonex go into industrial Labyrinth again.
But surely they do not invest much into those products, they just bring other racket sports marketing into golf again, maybe…
This means pingpong, tennis profit enough feed thier golf division.
