Have Your Say! – Mizuno Brand Survey

One For the Little Guy

To this point we’ve basically focused our survey efforts on some of the larger brands in golf. This time around we want to hear your thoughts on a smaller brand that I suspect will be very popular with you guys.

As most of you know, Mizuno started leaking pics of their upcoming fall releases during The Open Championship, and with embargoes lifting, now seems like the perfect time to hear what you think about the Mizuno brand and its products.

As always the case, there’s plenty to think about. Given the recent developments at Dick’s Sporting Goods, you might appreciate Mizuno’s controlled release practices more than ever.

2-3 years is plenty of time for anticipation to build.

Have you traditionally looked forward to new Mizuno iron releases? Do you still?

What about the woods? To many Mizuno is…and always will be an iron company, but what are your thoughts on their drivers, fairways, and hybrids? Can they compete in a marketplace where innovation is the buzzword du jour?

Finally, be sure to comment (since we don’t cover it in the survey) and let us know what you think about those Mizuno putters and balls that never quite make their way to shelves in the USA.

Love Mizuno…despise Mizuno? It’s time to have your say.

Mizuno will always be an iron company for me from the first two sets I had (unfortunately not in the bag currently) and a future set I will get. My nephew is using the MP33 and loves them. I stringly hope Mizuno maintain their focus on what they do best and become even better than try to become everything to everyone like some other companies. The wedges and putters are coming along very nice. I cannot comment on the woods. I have not tried as I am very happy with the woods I have and have been with for some time.

I’d be VERY interested to see what Mizuno putters could offer. Milled forged putter heads have long been considered to be the best way to provide the best feeling putter head. Who knows forging better than Mizuno?!

As interested as I am in the putter, I have ZERO interest in their golf ball until they prove that they’ve made a commitment to be truly revolutionary and industry leading. I don’t see a company like Mizuno thinking that big or making that kind of commitment.

What they should really consider doing is having SOME kind of Tour presence! Ever having some exposure on TV would help make them relevant… and make me more likely to believe their entire product offering is legitimate.

I am 79 and have used Cobra, Calloway and Taylormade clubs with senior shafts for the past 10 years. I am now using Mizuno replacement irons 3 to 7 and forged 8,9 and wedges all with LL shafts. The improvement in my game as far as accuracy and increased length is amazing, especially the replacement irons. There is no way I could hit a standard 3 or 4 iron yet these Mizuno’s are easy. WELL DONE MIZUNO.

Talk about old……. got serious this year and finally updated my Mizuno Tour Classic’s with a set of 800HD’s and have not looked back. Once I get the handicap down to a respectible level….. read under +20…… I will look at getting a forged set of irons. Can’t see changing now as these are great clubs and Im not a sheep……. Baaaaa for now!

I played Mizuno irons for probably 20 years. When I needed graphite and a little more GI their products were no better than other top manufacturers although I still bought them at least until they went to that black and orange color theme. (If you want to go that route-try Ping) That’s when I moved on. Bought a lot of their woods and hybrids -loved the color blue but performance-Mehh.. They should stick with what they are good at. If you can play a steel shaft in an iron-there’s a model for you and you’ll never be disappointed. Otherwise they are in the pack.

I bought my first set of mizuno’s when the mp-32 came out. I wanted to try the cut-muscle. I have been a mizuno guy ever since. I still have my 32’s, bought a set of mp-14’s used because I wanted to try a “blade”, and now I play the mp-63s. I have played ping, adams cmb’s, and old hogan apex’s. For me I can’t find anything that looks as good or feels as good as a mizuno. I had worked part-time golf retail and got to see all the new clubs coming in. Hit many irons in the simulator but nothing feels as good as a mizuno forged iron.

I love Mizuno irons even if they are a little over priced. I would play them now but there isn’t a dealer near by that stocks them . I bought the MP 600 driver when it came out and was disappointed with the performance. I believe Mizuno is a leader in design and performance and has fallen off on their presence with very few PGA players using their equipment. I like the method of not having 6 new drivers and etc. of several pieces of equipment coming out every 3 to 4 months. I always looked forward to seeing what new irons Mizuno was coming out with each year but not their woods or wedges. I think Mizuno has the highest quality equipment , best design and sharpest looking out there..The other line such as clothing ,shoes , caps are cheap and they look it. I not only want to play better , have the better clubs, but look sharper also.. I have a friends that each own a golf course and would stock Mizuno but for people to play it, they must have access to see it , touch it and try it out.. Keep designs and innovation at the top level , then get some reps on the road put the stuff out there . They will come but it has to be seen.. Sponsor some small course tourney’s for the avg. Joe and have local mini tours that small courses can participate .. The question I ask Mizuno – HOW SERIOUS ARE YOU ABOUT WANTING MIZUNO BEING A LEADER? Time Will Tell.. P.S. If you want to know more about those courses e-mail me Southwest Tennessee golfer.

Have been playing Mizuno irons for more years than I care to count. They are by far the best feeling irons currently being made. They are SO much better than the others, it is not a fair fight. That said, it is also not a fair fight in the woods category. Nearly everyone wins against them. Some of the poorest on the market would not be a totally untrue analogy. Hybrids are close to the woods. But some of their old bettnardi putters are still really smooth and have a great feel.

Would be interesting to see a comparison between Titleist and Mizuno. But then M always comes before T in the alphabet… and irons!

I bought a set of MP-52 irons because I wanted to play forged before I got too old to hit them. I played 3 years of the best golf in my life. I have crystal in my den to prove it from local events. Mizuno is just not in front of the mainstream golfers eye or it would be the number one iron in forged players. Not everyone can hit a 3 iron that is forged but most can hit an 8 iron or wedge that feels like butter. Buy a set and enjoy!

I have been using Mizuno’s since the MP52’s hit the stores. Currently using the 54’s and very happy. Have used the MP series putters and all models of the woods and wedges & still use the MP650 driver, fairway wood and hybrid. Pity we cant get the golf shoes but their rain gear, gloves and skins are very good. Balls are not bad but I guess that is a very difficult market to break into when you’re competing with the likes of Titleist. I’m interested to try the new woods when they’re released.
For anyone undecided what irons to buy, it’s worth giving Mizuno a try.

I have only one issue with Mizuno. The first set of fitted irons i ever bought were mizunos and the feel of them were more than impressive. My deal being a lefty is not all their products are available in left handed. The JPX EZ comes to mind as one of them. Overall i think their quality is amazing. I did however suffer from shorter distances with them, some by almost two clubs, call it traditional lofts or lengths but that is the only reason i haven’t played them in about 7 yrs.

I currently have sets of 53,54&57 irons, albeit not currently in the bag. I have gamed multiple drivers in the past with limited success. I have gamed several generations of fairway woods and a decades worth of wedges and hybrids. Finally I have several putters and a closet of clothing and gloves all from Mizuno. The two things that I have have become increasingly frustrated with is Mizuno’s shrinking presence locally and their continuing reticence to expand their custom shaft options.

Irons-First set of irons after some knockoffs was T-Zoid Pros, then some MP 60s, and now I’m focusing on improving, so needed some confidence…MP-H4s. I love them, but really need to graduate to the MP 54s soon; handicap is down to high 9s and the MP-H4 short irons don’t have a topline that I really have ever liked, barring forgiveness. Maybe the MP-15s will beat out the 54s, but I doubt it. Irons have best feel; I’ll never likely have another set of irons in the bag.

Wedges-MP-T4 for two seasons now. I used to play Cleveland, but the inconsistency in cast vs. forged feel between wedges and irons bugged me. so I first switched to some Mizuno R-12s, but I didn’t care for the look of them or the grinds. Be careful here Mizuno, love what you have now…keep it up.

Woods-I currently have a JPX EZ driver that I take to “Pound Town” all the time. The stock shaft just isn’t cutting it in there (too light), and it is a bit all over the place consistency wise. I’m in the process of looking for a new shaft, I made the switch to a more “workable” driver in the the Titleist D3 with a solid shaft (Speeder 757). I will likely go back to a Mizuno Driver once I try the new JPX 850 I’ve seen online, but I can’t wait, and want to try the Titleist a bit. I also carry a JPX EZ 3-wood that I love, but again, the shaft drove me away, so I am switching to a PING G30. The Ping has a little smaller head vs. the JPX EZ, and I’m throwing a Diamana S+ in there for stability. For woods, I would say, I love the head designs (Please make the new JPX 850 in the black matte finish) but Mizuno, please offer up “REAL” custom shaft options with proper swing weighting and length customization options for better players. Can you also make a shaft optimizer for woods please…the process is painful to pick wood shafts.

Hybrid-I won a JPZ EZ fairway wood in the Mizuno Pro-Am at Pebble Beach this year, and loved the head, but the shaft was not that great. It just didn’t push my Rescue 11 TP out of the bag, but if I didn’t have that, I’d use the Mizuno with a different shaft.

Putter-I have had a Mizuno Bettinardi putter that I loved, but I switched “systems” to SeeMore, and can’t go back. Sorry, not likely to go Mizuno here.

Shoes/Clothing/umbrella-I have some Mizuno running shoes that are fantastic, would love to at least see some golf shoe options. I carry a Mizuno rain suit from last year that never leaves the trunk of my car just in case. I got a Mizuno umbrella with my irons that I don’t really use, but it seems cheap relative to the GustBuster I have. I have a Mizuno pullover that I had to have tailored to fit me better, but I hear Mizuno hired a guy from RLX, so fashion should be upticking.

Balls-Maybe, not sure how they are, but If LD and CHIII are still gaming Titleist, I’m guessing it would be a waste of time here.

I’m pretty sure Mizuno has not submitted their balls to the USGA for inclusion on the conforming list, since they don’t sell balls in the US. That’s why Mizuno staff players don’t use them although they might prefer to use Titleist anyway.

I’ve been gaming JPX800 Pro and MPT-11 wedges for 3 years and LOVE them. When you hit them flush, it is like butter. I’ve tried various Nikes, Taylormade, Adams and Bridgestone, and they can’t compare to my Mizunos. Not to mention the beautiful craftsmanship. Nothing better in the irons.

My first set of irons were Titleist 962s that I got back in college (10 years ago). About 4 years ago I got Mizuno jpx800s and dropped my hcp from 18 to 10 within a year. They are an amazing game improvement set and I’ve been hooked on Mizuno irons since then. I’d always wanted to move to more of a forged, ‘players’ iron and as soon as I hit the mp-54s I knew they’d be my next set.

After playing them for nearly a year now I can basically guarantee (unless something drastic happens with the company) that I will always play Mizzy irons. The wedges are nice too but I don’t play them. Hopefully the drivers and woods step up their game in the next few years.

Mizuno mx17 were the first set of irons I ever bought for myself. Talk about a game changer. Easily 2 clubs longer than the no name set from the mid 90’s I had prior. Those Mizunos solidified my love of the game. Since then I have played or hit irons from pretty much every brand out there but none have given me that “oh my god” moment like the first day on the range with my old mx17 set. Currently playing Callaway razr x forged/razr x mb combo set which I like just fine, but I think my next set will be something along the lines of the jpx ez forged. Nothing compares to Mizuno irons.

I personally Love Mizuno Irons and believe they are in the top 3 overall in design and performance. Not to mention the quality, I still play a set of MP-29’s not because I don’t love the new designs but I’m comfortable with my set and plus the wife wont let me buy anymore clubs lol Until the day happens that I decide to design a set of Irons ( No plans to though) I’m sure I’ll continue to hit Mizuno for a long time to come.

I get the feeling that mizuno hit upon the secret formula for irons long ago and have refined it since (I haven’t felt anything like a mizuno forged iron hit flush)

Unfortunately they seem to be groping for woods, putters and balls. Wedges are pretty good by extension of their expertise in irons. I look at Ping and wonder at the similarities of fan base and release cycles but why this doesn’t apply to the woods and putters.

I recently upgraded from my jpx 825 to my mp 54, and the 54s have the perfect blend of distance, feel, and forgiveness. I like Mizuno because you can always count on them for a good product, but I wish I could find a place to demo their woods. I live in DC

MP-52’s have been my favorite irons of all time (at least for actual scoring on the course). Really looking fwd to the release of their new driver and fairways that CH III and Luke Donald have been seen on the range with the last couple of months.

Personally I don’t care about Mizuno balls but the putters would be something I would definitely like to try.

A pre-question or two regarding the MP 15 article I assume you are about to post.
      How do the following compare?
      -toplines
      -toe height
      -sole thickness/grind
      between the MP 15 / MP 59 / MP 64

Sure you will cover these but just in case.

I’m playing the 64’s and really like them. But if they really have 20% more forgiveness the 59 and matching sound feel of the 64. I’m going to give these a serious look. Just hoping they don’t look too clunky.

Been a mizuno guy for about 20 years now, mp-33’s, the jpx 825 pro’s, and now mp-64’s.
A flush hit with mp’s is the best feeling available in golf. I’ve hit lots of clubs, and many are very close, but I can’t say I’ve hit one that is better than a mizuno.
