Behind The Scenes at Bettinardi

Have you ever wondered how putters are made?  Many of the hardcore gearheads already know…but even many of those have often wondered how Bettinardi makes his gun-themed flatsticks with the copper inserts….well today you’ll get to see a behind-the-scenes look of the making of his newest creation the 22 Caliber.

The Inspiration Behind The Putter

The 22 Caliber was inspired 22 years ago when Mr Bettinardi’s first child Sam was born. As a father he is very proud of him and he wants to dedicate this putter to his son. Mr Bettinardi made the 38 Special, 44 Magnum, and 50 Caliber putters all to commemorate his own birthdays but it was really important to dedicate one to his oldest child and his only son.

What makes the 22 Caliber putters so special besides for what it stands for is all in the process. As was stated above, Bob designed the three gun series putters in the past 15 years and this is the 4th to be added to that series. This is the first time that he took on the challenge to precision machine any sort of plug pattern into the sole. This new design was trickier than I expected and through many trials and quite a few errors the studio was able to create a process to mill the excess hand placed plugs along the radius surface of the sole just right. Even with the decades of not only my Mr Bettinardi’s engineering know how, but that of all his staff there were still countless putters that had plugs that were ripped clean out and others that the plugs chipped or the sole was not perfect.  In the past the 38 Special had plugs on many of the flat surfaces of the putter, the 44 magnum and 50 Caliber also had the majority of their plugs in the face. But this time around Bob really wanted to try something different..not to mention he had other ideas for the face.

As many of you will notice right away from the pictures the 22 Caliber features a Fit Face which has become an extremely popular offering over the past few years . Mr Bettinardi really wanted this putter, like all of his putters to be 100% usable regardless of the of their engravings, milling, or design. The combined feel of this new Fit Face with the 100% Milled DASS (Double Aged Stainless Steel) head provides a feel that is second to none.  Don’t forget that every single Bettinardi putter is milled right here in the USA, just outside of Chicago, just 15 feet from the owners desk…. and that desk belongs to Bob Bettinardi.  Enjoy the pictures, and now you can see first hand what goes into the making of a 22 Caliber!

Wow! As these putters become more commercial and become easier for the public to get their hands on, they will deffinately be the milled putter to overthrow Scotty Cameron! Can’t wait for that day…I’d kill for one of these putters!

Good call on this one, although I’ve never understood how Scotty commands his price point for such bland, and often poorly machined, putters

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you think you will make more putts with it, you PROBABLY will. Whatever works for your game. It might be lead tape in the cavity or brass plugs in the sole, or ghost white paint. I like the idea of the putter, as a work-of-art, or technically milled marvel, akin to a well designed surgical tool. Bettinardi’s putters are top tier for sure.

Give me a break with the individually inserted copper inserts. Way too much work for an area that doesn’t even touch the ball. I seriously doubt if these inserts have any effect on the roll of the ball. These overpriced clubs are spiced up with meaningless tweaks and aren’t worth the time it takes to make them. I don’t want pretty, I want a club that rolls the ball to the hole.

The inserts dont touch the ball but they add mass to the heel and toe of the club. This will reduce the recoil on an off-centre hit more than it would without the inserts.

I’d have to disagree with you Gil Bloomer but I do see your point. There may be no difference between a putter with copper and without, but, in my opinion, it is a mind set thing so if you think you’ve got the best putter then you can convince yourself you can perform. However with the new technology it may be possible that these things and different inserts and such may make a difference but at the end of the day it’s a putter, there is no competition for accuracy, nor distance nor Movable Weight Technology. So until there is proven technology that puts a putter far ahead of the rest of the market, I would put a choice putter completely down to confidence and whether or not when you stand over that ball, you are convinced that it will go in.

It’s very true that it can be a mind set thing. As we all know, our clubs are a very personal. It’s very important to have a club in your hand that you have total confidence in, as much as your ability. I find it amusing though that players will absolutely love the more expensive putter in terms of them making more putts, when I know their stats will disprove it almost every time. They putt no better with the more expensive putter but in their heads they think they do. I’ll take my weight adjustable, mid-priced Ping every time. It may not have all the new bells and whistles but one thing I can be sure of, it gets the ball to, and in most cases, in the hole while the ball rolls, and that’s all I can ask for. Nice chatting about this subject and thanks for your opinions. Have a happy holiday.

So sorry these exceptional putters have not see brighter light in the market place in the U.S.
I know in Japan it is a different story….I worked with Mizuno at the time and was seriously disappointed at the lack of interest in the putter line. I expect to see a new charge at the U.S. market and I for one can be the first to vouch for that.
