Think you’ve seen it all?  Think again.

(Written By: GolfSpy Zinger) In a time where golf clubs have become much like commodities…and choosing between brands is more like picking which type of 2% milk you like better…there is one small brand in Minnesota that stands out from the crowd.  If we’re talking about milk again, this would be the one that was hand-milked, by hand-picked cows, by hand picked milking craftsmen.  And oh yeah…personalized for each individual in your family for the exact nutrition break-down each child and family member needed.  And I almost forgot when you ordered that milk you would actually talk to the owner.

An Experience You Might Never Have Again

I’m talking about James Patrick Wedges. No, I am no longer talking about milk.   I am now talking about an experience I feel every golfer should get the opportunity of having once in their golf career.  And that is owning a JP Wedge.  That’s because when you buy one of his wedges you are not only buying one of the finest looking hunks of metal you will ever see but more importantly you are buying an experience you might never have again.

Thats because these types of people, these products, this business model is becoming extinct, you might even call it a dinosaur.  And I can promise you ones like these won’t be around forever.  So if you ever wanted to have something in your bag that was truly special, something you would have the rest of your life, then I highly recommend giving James Patrick a call.

Beyond Tour Level Treatment For Every Customer

If you have been to any PGA Tour event and looked closely into the bags of touring professionals, you’ll find a significant amount of customization as well as personalization.  This is especially apparent in the scoring clubs, the wedges.  Among touring professionals you’ll find varied loft configurations, finishes, grinds, bounce angle, swing weight, stampings, paint-fill, and so on.  A great deal of time, effort and energy goes into the design of these critical components of a players arsenal.

The game plan with the wedges can change for tour players depending on the turf, bunkering, rough, or countless other factors they encounter on a weekly basis.  Aside from limited finish, loft, bounce, and grind options, tour level customization is not readily available from most of the major equipment manufactures for the average consumer.

Plus A Little Extra.  Actually,  A Lot Extra!

Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, James Patrick Golf provides the same tour level personalization and customization offered to the best players in the world plus a little extra.  Actually, a lot extra.  In fact, the wedges produced by James Patrick Golf look as though they belong in a museum of modern art.  JP wedges are arguably some of the most beautiful pieces of golf equipment produced that eloquently combine science and art.  James Patrick Harrington, the owner/founder of James Patrick Golf built his business around three foundational principals.

Harrington explains, “James Patrick Golf is a foundation of Quality, Performance, and Aesthetics …always in that order.  You cannot achieve the ultimate in performance if the quality isn’t there from the beginning.  If you start with Quality, you then can build ultimate performance into it.  As an artist, Aesthetics are the icing on the cake.  I want you to have something in your hands that is a functional piece of Art.  Quality first, followed by Performance, and then finally polished with Aesthetics.”

How It All Got Started

Harrington started his professional career while attending the Professional Golf Management program at Arizona State University.  He began perfecting his craft working in custom club-making studio’s in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he started by modifying existing manufacture’s product:

“I started out creating my own twist on a household name brand and then stamping my signature on it, ‘JP.’  It started with some heel and toe relief allowing the wedge to become more versatile.  When material was ground from the wedge, it lost weight.  I needed to replace that weight and rather that using tip weights in the hosel of the wedge or lead tape on the back tungsten was inlaid into the carbon steel.  Tungsten is about twice as heavy as carbon steel which brought the weight back behind the ball.   This process also allows the manipulation the center of gravity (CG) while giving it an aesthetic appeal.”

Mission: Create The Finest Forged Wedge In Golf.

Harrington set out on a journey to design and create his own line of custom wedges establishing a home base in Minneapolis.  His mission was simple, to create the finest forged wedges in the game.  In January, 2010, the first JP branded wedge hit the grind wheel and JP Wedges were born.  Harrington begins with what he describes as “the finest forgings in the world” from the Kyoei Forging House in Ichikawa, Japan.  The JP Kyoei wedge blanks arrive heavy which provide the perfect canvas for Harrington to create a custom wedge tailored to the individual customer as a functional piece of art.

In an effort to maximize versatility around the greens, Harrington grinds a significant amount of steel from the heel and toe area’s of the wedge.  JP Wedges incorporate a “thinned out” hosel as well to penetrate thick rough and heavy sand.  To compensate for the loss of head weight as a result of the aggressive grind, Harrington inlays tungsten into the toe area of the wedge.  This process gets the wedge to the desired weight while moving the CG toward the center of the club-face which also reduces vibration.

Other wedge companies manufacture their heads with the center of gravity located toward the heel which Harrington believes is less than optimal.  This process yields a perfectly balanced wedge with the most efficient energy transfer into the ball at impact for more consistent shotmaking.

Virtually Limitless Possibilities

Another signature of Harrington’s wedge designs are the unique finishes, stamping, and paint-fill.  The finishes of the wedges are offered in a raw or plated finish.  Raw finishes, susceptible to oxidation through moisture will develop a patina over time.  The use of carbon steel permits Harrington to apply unique finishing techniques adding to the aesthetic appeal.  For the player who does not prefer their wedge to tarnish or rust over time, JP wedges are offered in plated finishes such as chrome.

JP wedges can be blackened through a black oxide or bluing treatment and torched using heat.  A torching also creates unique colors from a toasted bronze, purple, blue, to graphite in color.  These treatments are not as durable as a Plating and do wear through use.  Torched finishes add a nice appearance to your wedge as it ages into a vintage look through the oxidation process.”

To further personalization, Harrington offers the art of custom hand-stamping on the wedge providing the customer with the ability to own a wedge with positive meaning specific to them.  Harrington will hand-stamp a player’s initials, names of their children, use paint-fill from your Alma Mater, the possibilities are virtually limitless.

Built: One Wedge At A Time

Harrington estimates the duration to design and complete one wedge can take up to eight hours. This process is void of a large scale factory or assembly line process.  Each wedge is handmade, one at a time, by one individual.  This attention to detail comes at a premium as his custom wedges start at $299. However, this level of customization and personalized service cannot be found at your local golf retailer.  A phone call to James Patrick Golf means you’ll be discussing your custom wedge design with the man that will be doing all of the work.  At the same time, you’ll feel like the most important customer he’s had all year.

I have been playing JP’s custom wedges for the last three years, and before that he modified all my irons and wedges – I think the topic was pimp my proto’s on Golfwrx.

JP’s has a amazing product, I just wish there was more to go around so more people could enjoy them.

Ron- in the future don’t comment on product you do not have any first hand knowledge, and my best friends sisters boyfriend who is married to his Aunt dosent count.

Ron’s comments about James Patrick wedges and Miura clubs as overpriced leads me to believe he has never tried either. I know I purchased Miura irons and wedges two years ago and has resulted in much-improved distance control and accuracy with more consistent strikes. Last year was the first time in 6 years I was ranked number 2 on the money list at our club and I won most from closest to the pin competitions. This year I am ranked fifth with over 120 members and I believe it has a lot to do with switching clubs.
I don’t particularly like “art like” clubs as they seem to nice to use but do plan on trying out a 60 degree wedge with satin finish as won of my problems is bounce and would like to try something different.

I’ve been interested in the JP wedges for a while. They are amazing works of craftsmanship and art. That said, I’ve yet to talk with anyone who owns a JP Wedge that loves the product on the course. This is concerning when your looking at dropping $400+ for a blinged out wedge. In addition, JP’s inventory to make product has been scant when I’ve made inquiries. As I work with Byron Golf Design, I appreciate more than many the work of a craftsman making 1-off golf clubs. IMO wedges are as personal as putters. I learned an expensive lesson a few years ago with Scratch. I did a fitting by phone and email with Ari and shelled out $700 for a pair of custom wedges. They were things of beauty with great feel on full shots, but around the greens they were the wrong grind. After a month I sold them for $300 less eBay and PayPal fees. The only way I will ever invest in a JP wedge is to have an in-person fitting and hit a few shots.

Maybe I’m just confused. People come on here to see different equipment reviewed and the comments turn in to people saying how something is no good and no way would they ever own or try it. This was a review to expose people to a different type of wedge that you don;t see every day. I you don’t like what you see or are not interested in it, how about just go on to something else. And before the freedom of speech comments start coming in, there’s a difference of having an opinion to insulting who made it, who wrote the article and the people who do like it. I feel JP is very talented and passionate for what he does. I also felt it was a very well written and informative review. Also, just because you can’t tell the difference in what a wedge with different specs do or feel, maybe there are some people on hear who do know what they want, and can tell the difference in different grinds and specs on wedges. If you don’t like it, try doing it with a little class. Or if you can’t summon yourself to do so, then how about just moving on. Keep up the effort and great reviews MGS

I had a couple of vokey wedges “customized” for me a year or so ago and I can agree that they certainly didn’t put 8 hours of work into them. I answered their questions on their site and that was it. Primarily asking loft, lie, bounce and what stamping you would like on the back.
It sounds as if one could talk with James Patrick for quite a while where he would get your impressions of how you hit your wedges. I may just have to give him a call.

I been playing a 60 and 55 from JP for almost a year now. They are by far the best performing, best feeling, and best looking wedges that I have ever owned. I was lucky enough to meet JP in person at the PGA show last year and he is a very nice, very knowledgeable, and great to work with. Although the wedges can be a little pricey I’m extremely happy that I choose JP!!

by NO means am I even thinking about dogging these wedges. If I didn’t pride myself with scoring deals on golf clubs, these would be something to bag! but I can’t help but notice the blanks and how they remind me of the Mizuno t-10’s or t-11’s. Do you think Mizuno outsourced the t-10’s and t-11’s to Kyoei? I do love the idea of having this type of customization available and I think the market will move this way at some point, but I think $300 for a forged wedge is a little much of a push. If I got one, I would hate to even play it and make it not look as nice!

For now, I will stick with a vokey to hit out of a bunker.

I fail to see the point of all these fancy paint schemes. Ít adds nothing to the way the golfer strikes the ball. Mr. Harrington’s custom grinds may be great, but you can get similar tretmnt from any club builder. Finally, you didn’t show a single photo of any of the wedges’ face, which, after all, is the business part of the club.

This is really very simple. Wedges, like other clubs, are a personal thing. If you don’t like the look, or don’t see the value of a JP wedge, then shop elsewhere. For those that do, thanks to MGS for this article, and thanks to Mr. Harrington for persevering in his craft.

Nicely put. I would add that there is definite value (perceived or otherwise- doesn’t really matter) in having something that has been custom made only for you. I have a putter that matches that description. I didn’t buy it to show off or because I thought I had something to prove. It is very well made, to my specs, and was worth the extra cost over mass-manufactured clubs- to me. I like it. There is some serious negativity in these comments being misdirected at those who would preserve this aspect of our beloved game. Those who do preserve it are both customers and producers (or artisans in some cases). And JP “needs” to do whatever works for him.

These wedges can go with that pretty break down gold putter. Thses are for the Sunday drug store golfer that shoots a 100 and buys one set of wedges a lifetime. Nice for the weekend golfer.

JP needs to market his wedges in Japan/Asia.

I prefer performace over pretty. I will stick with my Mizuno MP-T4 wedges..

JP has great aesthetic style, but have you ever seen them at address? The one I saw in person looked great on the back side, but at address it was way too round for my liking. It reminded me of a spoon or a metal circle on the end of a shaft. The topline transition into the toe side and down into the rounded leading edge was one of the worst looking wedges I’ve seen. With that said that’s just my opinion, and doesn’t really mean a whole lot. I like straight leading edges with some subtle roundness in the toe and topline. I’m sure JP could make that shape, but I wonder why the pics never show his stuff at address?

Theres no way there any different from scratch wedges. They do look great but thats all you guys care about, your all trying to copy the custom art work the pros get to make you look cool, but in the end they perform no different than any other custom wedge and fr that price no thanks.

I know for a fact that JP has done and still does work for top PGA Tour pros (past winners included and one in the top 20). OEM contracts won’t allow them to use his name, but they end up copying his work. Ron, stick with your mass produced crap and you can take your negative comments and stick those somewhere too. JP does amazing work and any comments to the contrary are just envious at his ability, passion, and ingenuity. I play his wedges and they are the best I’ve ever had.

Desmond yr absolutely right and my golfspy you can get a certain grind from pings wrx dep , and custom paint fill and correct weight you want in it. What else is going on in jp wedges you say that the other manufactures cant do, I admit a few years ago you couldnt get a wedge custom made for you from the OEMs but now you can. I would love for you to give me something special those jp wedges can give you that the other companies cant do ? If they were that special all the top players would be using them thats simple common sense. Most players in these threads have no clue what grind is good fr them to begin with and couldnt never ever in million years tell the difference if a certain grind is helping them or not. Those wedges are just like miura irons way over priced pieces of frigin metal, both with absolutely no technoligy in them thats been done for 100 years now.

And to be honest JP is not a hellova salesman, honestly quite the opposite. Pretty quiet shy kind of fella.

And to your first point I think JP wedges have a little more going on than just getting a grind and weight you want. Think that is blatantly obvious. But for those that can’t see that you will most likely never understand the allure of a brand like this. You go stick with your Cleveland’s Ronny.
