The “Laser Golf Pin” Concept

The Concept: The Laser Pin would be a training tool and possibly used by all golf courses as an optional assistance for recreational golfers. Powered by solar panels, Laser Pin would project laser contours onto the green, allowing the golfer to accurately read the lie and ideal path of their putt.

I don’t see a lot of downsides to this technology…might slow play down a little…actually it might speed some of these guys up. We all play with a guy that reads a putt from 42 different angles and still has a 3.14 Putting Avg. I think this would be a great feature for beginners and even for tournaments. It would also be a great training device to help improve your skill on how to properly read greens. This would be great to teach not only juniors but even highly skilled golfers on how to properly read a green. I think this idea might actually spread like wildfire!

      wont work, i tried it, lasers disappear in a daylight, thats why construction guys still use chock because you cant see laser on a bright day, try it for yourself, get a line laser and go on a practice green with it

      Could there just be a printout at the pro shop indicating the direction of breaks on each green so we would not need to see anything extra on the green.

      Their actually are a couple systems like that. But just have not fully caught on yet.

      To get a laser line in direct sunlight you would need it to be hooked to a car battery.

      I think one set of rules is great but with a few changes. First, no playing the ball out of a fairway divot-it makes no sense to me you have to play from someone else’s rudeness if you hit the fairway. Second, no more going back to the tee. Everything should be dropped from where it went out to speed play.

      This may not be the best device ever, but it does illustrate a logical point – we are not pr0ofessional golfers and we should not have to play the same game.

      I think there should be three sets of rules. Professional rules, Amateur tournament rules and Amateur recreational rules.

      Professional and tournament rules would be similar, but amateur rules could include:

      1. No penalty for lost balls in the fairway. Why should a golfer with poor eyesight recieve a penalty just because he or she does not have a gallery to spot the ball.
      2. OB would be a 2 stroke penalty and drop at the point of “exit” (like a hazard, except it is 2 strokes instead of 1) This would speed up play considerably.
      3. Use a larger hole – the better players will still make more putts than their lesser counterparts, but all would take less strokes. This would speed up the game and make it moore enjoyable for recreationao golfers.
      4. Marking the all on the greeen would be ruled illegal unless your ball was in somone’s way. (BTW marking a ball on the green is not required. If your opponent asks you to mark your ball, you have the option of putting it instead. Unfortunately, few people follow this time saving practice.

      There are many more good ideas,but these will get you thinking.

      I see this like bumpers in bowling… a great tool to get started with. I think it definitely belongs with the course and to be used at their discretion. Should everyone get them? No, but most people don’t use bumpers in bowling either (even though some should).

      No they did not but they did use a lot of other more idiotic devices to get where they are ;) And this would be great for the First Tee and many other junior programs across the country.

      Did Tiger, Phil or Vejay have trouble learning to put without this newest in the line of technologies designed to “Dumn down” the golfer. Just get a thighmaster and watch others play if you don’t feel like doing your homework. I could possibly go for it if it was used in the “First Tee” program but I like my golf the old fashioned way.

      No. It’s fine for computer games, but leave it at that. Green reading is a skill – some might say an art – that golfers have to learn. This device would take a lot of the judgement and skill out of it. Totally agree with Eric above.

      Thanks Eagle006…although how do people become better at the skills they acquire? They practice…and how do they practice…many times with tools and training devices. This would be a TRAINING device not something used in competition. No different then the “Putting Arc” which basically cheats in how to show you how to have the proper putting stroke.

      Won’t help the majority of amateurs-they cant hole putts even if they know the line!

      A gimmick. I dont really think it will be anything more than another expensive training aid-that I will probably buy and throw in the garage with the others!

      Maybe I should have a car boot sale and sell them all!

      Sorry, I am having a hard time believing the laser lines can be seen in bright sunlight. They must be incredibly strong. Has anyone seen it in action?

      Great traing device for the practice green but I think on course the R&A and the USGA would need TUMS for their heartburn!

      If every green was completely flat we’d stil miss putts. Putting is about aim and pace something this tool doesn’t help with. It looks like a wonderful gadget thou. What about grain etc? Maps have grids on them but people still get lost. We need SatNav Putting! Men dressed like Rodney Dangerfield will buy this immediately!

      I say they just create a new rule that once your on the green its an automatic 2 putt! This would speed up play!!!!!!!

      I guess it will do fine at least until they invent a robot to putt for us. Why stop at putting? Just have a machine hit all the balls. We can just drink beer in the clubhouse and wait for our gadgets to come tell us how we scored!

      Very interesting. Might be something to spice up the game and attract more amateurs. It would be like choosing to have bumpers or not when you go bowling. I also agree with Thomas’ comment above, and can’t decide if it’ll weak the average players ability to read greens or not.

      Well, I have seen a similiar concept in Stracka.com’s yardage guides that they have available now for tour events. This would open it up to more courses and would give you a more hands on approach than the Strack yardage guides.

      No way…the game is about judgement. I took Mark Sweeney’s green reading class where you learn to accurately read the green with your feet and you know mathematically how your ball breaks. He has 30 tour clients. His stuff works. I’m the fastest green reader in my foursome and rarely 3 putt.

      I think this is one of those golf gadgets that wasn’t really thought through, and as such will end up not living up to it’s potential. Since most average golfers can’t make putts even if given the line and break by a pro, this device will probably be of no value. I’m sure it will probably cost as much as a decent range finder also, which might be strike two against it. In the hands of skilled players it might be a useful tool however, if it’s not ruled illegal…

      Thanks for your comment John. This is actually not a device you would buy but rather the course itself as a benefit to the average golfer. And this would most likely not be legal…but still something the average golfer could use.

      I think this could be a real ingenius idea as long as it is banned off the tour. I do agree that it would be a great help to juniors because of the green speeds these days.
