12 New Drivers You Might Have Missed

The USGA’s conforming clubs list is updated every Monday morning. And when the site is actually up and running, it’s a great source for finding pics of yet to be released (or even announced new clubs), and the occasional actual prototype driver. Of course, for every Nike Vapor Fly we find, there are literal handfuls of drivers that you’ll probably never see in stores.

The USGA’s list isn’t just for big American OEMs. Small companies, Asian companies, and basically anyone else who ever might want their driver to be deemed tournament legal, can submit clubs to the USGA for a conformity check.

Very often we share some of the bigger finds with you, but there’s plenty more on the list from companies of all sizes, that we think you might find interesting.

It’s unfortunate that the USGA still uses black and white photography (it’s purpose is to document, not necessarily to make anything look pretty), but even without the benefit of color, there’s some pretty cool stuff to be seen.

Here’s a sample of some of the driver heads that were approved this month.

Something I mentioned in a previous comment- A lot of these clubs look great, but for me, it is really all about the experience. I need to feel how it swings to really know if it is something I could use on a regular basis. That’s just me though.

Is that a new Boccieri Heavy Driver? Looks the same as the I bought that one in 2012. Nice club but quickly replaced. The Heavy 5 Wood remains in the bag and is still my most reliable club.

what shaft do they pair with the Heavy Driver, if the head is heavier then normal you would have to have a pretty stiff shaft in order for it to play stiff?

Adila NVS if I remember correctly. I still have my heavy 5 wood (my favorite club).
There is a weigh plug in the grip end that makes the club feel heavier – even though swing weight i apparently the same/similar to others. They make the “Secret Grip”.

ya my thoughts are more on the Frequency of the shaft if the head is heavier even if you put an X stiff shaft in the thing it could play more like a regular due to the weight of the club head. Unless its not that much weight added to the head, the heavy putter comes to mind which was a beast.

Mizuno is JDM issue only. Won’t see it in the States. TourSpec will sell it though.

having not looked to closely at the GBB do we know if the weights can be removed or say added to the back? I know the Fly Z + you are able to take the flip-zone weight out and replace with heavier or lighter weights. If you can remove or add weights to the GBB it could possibly just be a weight kit needed from Callaway. Also what would be the point of having 2 weights what if you put the weight in the middle of where you would put the 2 weights would this not essentially work the same? The only thing I can think of that it would help would be gear effect if you were to place the weights at each end of the sliding bar. Feel free to chime in if there is anything else this would effect as I am always up for learning something new.

Also something about that Henry Griffits speaks to me, I would love to try one to see what its about but I have been burnt in the past purchasing a not so well known driver manufactures driver head so I will assume I will never get my hands one it or any of these for the most part.

Don’t know why, but I’m intrigued by the Yamaha. Something about the shape that I can’t put my finger on, but it looks right to me.

How does the Knuth High Heat relate to this list; is it even conforming? From my limited vantage, it appears the new Cobra King LTD and the High Heat are in similar territory regarding low/rear CG. Does anyone have any experience with this company or driver?

Before I made a choice on which one to test, I’d like to see the crown side of the club. The sole side is handy but it’s not what I’d be looking at. Optics do make a difference.

Such a BS move by Callaway… they absolutely knew they’d be releasing a GBB with two movable weights, but decided to only put one in the first model so they could stretch it into two different products. It’s one thing if the tech has changed and they release a new, better driver, but this is simply a cash-grab… the design didn’t even change! If I had bought the first GBB w/ only one weight, I’d be LIVID right now.

Checking with Callaway now, but my suspicion is it’s exactly the same head with a 2nd weight added (probably for a particular player). The USGA is extremely picky when it comes to any change (be it weights or cosmetics), so the probability is the additional weight – even on a one-off basis – necessitated the approval of that particular configuration.

Thanks Tony — That may very well be the situation with the particular driver pictured above, but just to be clear, I think we can all pretty much posit that Callaway will soon release a two-weighted GBB model to the public. In fact, that’s the first thing I thought when I saw that the current GBB only had one weight. It’s like they’re copying the SLDR-R15 strategy, but doing it even more blatantly.

No shenanigans at play here. Checked with Callaway…heads are identical, the only difference is the addition of a 2nd weight, which was enough to force a resubmit to the USGA. No word on aftermarket weight availability, but if Callaway does at somepoint move two a two weight version for retail, I’d expect something meaningful will change as well.

      Fair. Thanks for following-up Tony.
