MyGolfSpy.com Launching v2.0 Soon! – {WE WANT YOUR INPUT}

MyGolfSpy Wants Your Advice!

Getting tired of the old MyGolfSpy site design? So was I! So…I decided it was time to do a complete overhaul. I’m totally scrapping this design you see now for a new and improved “MyGolfSpy v2.0“. We want to add some new features to the MyGolfSpy blog and also make it easier for you to navigate.

BUT….

I need your input before I finish the re-design! The MGS blog has been around for just over 3 years now…and has grown by leaps and bounds because of you guys. This past month there were over 215,000 golf spies that stopped by to check out what MGS was all about. The site has evolved tremendously in this time…so the design needs to as well. And I want you to help determine how it will evolve.

SO….

What do you want to see? More spy pics? More club reviews? More PGA Tour coverage? How about some Kick-Ass Exclusive Offers only for MGS VIP? Think we need to ad some compelling interviews? Better ways to navigate the site? Maybe you have revolutionary idea you would like to see added. No matter what it is we want to hear about it…and now is the time to let us know.

TAKE THE POLL!

You can choose one answer or multiple answers. Don’t see what you would like us to add to the site in the poll? No problem…all you have to do is add your idea or concept into the “comments section” at the bottom of the article. Look forward to your ideas and answers!

What would you like to see on the "New MyGolfSpy Site"?

I’d like to see a topic for just golf stories, and comments on anything related to golf.

What type of golf stories would you like to see more of Don?

I’d like to se more course reviews and a places to play spot. A problem for people like me is I travel and when I go play golf I’m a single. It would be nice to have a directory of people to play with.

Some news related to other market such as Japan. Since the US golf business has been inspired by Japanese technology in some area in the past 20 years including titanium heads and so on, it would be great for your website to show what is going on in the Japanese market. I am a Japanese living in Orange county and am a golfer for over 20 years. I can be of your help in this area.
Best regards

It would be nice to have a short story about Pro players, especially about good looking LPGA (Yeah!).
Tips on improving shots.
We spy on products, but we never really know why that product is better than other products. What really make it the best product, and how to use it to be the best product.
When the R9 driver came out, everyone was really happy to get one. I got one, and I can’t hit it and had to sell it. I had to go back and use Nike Machspeed square head. That got me 40+ yards more than the R9!
What would be costly is to go through every equipment suites who would be nice. In depth details about the type of equipments that would work best for short players, tall players, fat players, asian, white, black, mexican, and many more type of players.
That is just my thoughts, maybe other people have better ideas and less costly.

Reply

mygolfspy February 18, 2011 at 7:39 pm

I think that is a great idea Jim. And you are right the costs would be large. But maybe we can figure out a way to do it without breaking the bank ;)

More pics, videos. Make a portion of the site where people can make their own videos and put them on. Kinda like a blog. You should also make competitions like best trick shot videos or something like that. I’m sure a lot of people would make videos. I know I would.

Reply

mygolfspy February 18, 2011 at 7:41 pm

I think the best Trick Shot video contest might be something we do! Problem is we have tried video contests before and not very many people entered. I suspect because only a small portion of the MGS readers know how to post them up on YouTube. But I think we will try it again.

I think you do a great job – very unbiased and no agendas. This truly the best site for true feedback and no “industry plant” people commenting on the products or issues. I would like a few more pics is really my only upgrade. Keep up the good work.

Reply

mygolfspy February 18, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Thanks LowBall…we have officially decided to take ZERO advertising dollars from big OEM’s to make sure that they can not impact what we write about. Only way to truly stay un-biased.

Reply

Ben February 18, 2011 at 12:03 pm

I have been really impressed with your non-biased and data driven club reviews. A lot of other sites have been getting friendly with manufacturers and I love getting reviews from neutral locations.

Reply

mygolfspy February 18, 2011 at 7:43 pm

I totally agree Ben…the bigger a golf site gets the more friendly they get with OEM’s…but that will not happen on MyGolfSpy.

Mike Y February 18, 2011 at 12:09 pm

Love to have more testers try the clubs out, maybe 10-25 people with low to mid handicaps to get good feedback on the clubs across the board. Just not US testers, but Canadian also…

Working on just that Mike. Might not be 25 but we are working on increasing the number of golfers that test the gear to get even more accurate data.

I would like to see some hard core reviews on golf resorts, not the bend over backwards reviews we see in magazines used as merchandising value add to advertising dollars.

Also, for Japanse manufacturers, I really like “the best designs you’ve never seen” themes. It’s great to see the wares of specialty manufacturers, and figure out if their design innovation will be adapted by the mass producers.
Thanks.

Hi
I think more information about the components that go into clubs would really add to the appeal of the website. As a clubmaker, I like nothing more than giving the average golfer options about their equipment. I am particulary interested in driver length, weights of shafts, flexes, swingweight, etc. There are only a few power golfers in the modern game, who use shafts that are considerably stiffer and heavier than most club golfers. But I want to make club golfers think outside the box in terms of equipment choice. Also, as Will just mentioned, ball tests wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

Reply

FavreTheLooper February 18, 2011 at 12:32 pm

I dont see the need to add Golf News, get plenty of that from other websites and magazines. This site is and can become even more of the haven for the equipment junkie. I’d like to see weekly club use stats from at least the PGA, and possibly the Euro and Nationwide tours. Along the lines of top 5 usage in: driver, irons, hybrid, balls, wedges, and putters. I dont need shoes, socks, pants and shirt..no Mr Blackwells on this site, HAHA!!

Reply

Golfer Burnz February 18, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Could you hire a golf historian? I’m amazed at how many golf ideas are rehashed and then touted as new technology. It would be nice to pay homage to where these ideas originated. Certainly many of the new clubs today were inspired by previous clubs and it would be nice to know which clubs were revered enough to improve apon their design. It seems that clubs and putters of a particular design, that turn up over and over again, do so for a reason. They work!

It would be cool if you could do some sort of “Golf Spy On Tour” articles. Many of the Equipment Reps. have people that hang around the tours and help to customize clubs for Tour Pros. I know that Solus and others also write blogs out this. If Golf Spy were to offer a wider audience for these Equip Tour Boggers it could help to consolidate everything on MGS.com.

It would be cool to show how a Tour Pro is adjusting or tweaking equipment. I know that often the names of Tour Pro’s cannot be given but they can talk about “trying out” new grinds, lofts, shafts, etc. This could be intriguing to read for sure.

How about a few club and/or ball comparison tests with statistical results only. Like “Driver ABC: 20 testers, handicaps between 10 and 20…. 235 yd carry plus 27 yards roll. Driver XYZ: 20 testers, handicaps between 10 and 20…. 223 yd carry plus 34 yards roll”. Not the usual Golf Mag tester comments like “the ball flew off the face….etc.”

More reviews are always welcome…Another thing might be anything “new” on the market could be reviewed, not just clubs, but accessories like gloves, towels, gagets, etc. Continue items such as ‘How To” (various things…ie: stamping clubs, imprinting balls, changing finish on clubs, etc.)

Another thing of interest is the History of Equipment and the People that were behind the scenes—
Interesting personalities involved in Golf such as Movie Stars, Important People and Players with their entertaining stories.
Articals on what is the USGA going to fix next ? Maybe this game is too easy let’s make
it a little harder to play so more people will want take up golf for fun and entertainment.

More coverage of smaller companies (niche companies?) and their products that are overlooked by the major magazines, or get very little press. MyGolfSpy does the best job of this already, but keep it up!

Totally agree! I love hearing about what the main guys are doing, but I walked in to my golf store this weekend and realized there is a huge selection of manufacturers that never get reviewed or looked at. I doubt that it’s all bad on that side of the putter wall. Also, it would be fun to have a diamond in the rough/thiftstore finds section for vintage clubs castaways that are collectible or usable. MGS rocks and I know 2.0 will be a good move.

I would like to see the new equipment brought out compared directly with the line of equipment it replaces. This way we can see if there have been playing improvements as well as cosmetic ones. The big manufacturers keep bringing out new lines and then superceding them six months later. We need to know if there are advantages or if we are being played for our bank balances. A comparison between old and new would inform of the use of upgrading or not.

A few things the Zoom Boom has done.
It moved a college golfer’s release point 6 inches in 10 swings. As you know that is huge. For those of you who don’t know. His coach tried for 2 1/2 years and could not get him to move it. (Went from hitting a big draw to hitting lasers)
A manager of The Edwin Watts Store in The Villages increased his club head speed 10 mph from 99 to 109 in 12 swings.
A manager of a large teaching chain took a swing with his club after using the Zoom Boom and said “you can’t be that square.” so he recalibrated his computer. Afterwards he was still just as square

Consider reviewing component club heads. Why? Clubs assembled with component heads can not be “tested” before purchase. Therefore, it’s not possible to determine if the head will deliver what the manufacturer promises until it’s assembled.

If the head does not deliver what it promises, the buyer learned an expensive lesson and may abandon the component market forever.

I personally like the simple look of the old clubs, irons especially. Yes, I’m one of those quacks that liked the Lil’ David Slingers (I own a set that’s never been hit) and the looks of the Cleveland VAS too. I’m aware that those two statements conflict, but when I say the simple look, I’m referring to the forged blades of earlier years. Today’s forged blades, with exception of a few, look like a crumbled beer can hanging on a stick. Exceptions would be Mizuno, Scratch, Fourteen TC 910 and few others offerings.

Now, what I’d like to see on Golfspy is a comparison of the old irons to the new with respect to distance, dispersion, spin characteristics, etc. Answer the question, are the new clubs really that much, if any better. What a shocker it would be to find out from real golfers (week end warriors) that 10 year old irons that cost a fraction of today’s irons are really better performing clubs. Appease me with a showdown of say, Taylormade Forged 300′s against the Taylormade latest and greatest that Dustin Johnson hits a 3 iron 260 yards with. How about the Bridgestone J38′s against a set of Precept Tour Premium irons that can be bought for about $100. Let’s see the difference then decide two things, are the new offering that much better, and if so, is the difference worth the $500 to $600 cost differential in today’s economy. Now Golfspy if you really want to help your readers, what better way than making the big companies put their clubs where their mouths are?

I’m one more person wanting you to test/rate component heads. I would think that if you asked the major component companies to send you samples all with the same shafts, or, just have them send you heads and put them together yourself with the same shafts, then you’d have very interesting test information to share.

Choose a popular mid priced shaft and let’s see how the component heads compare.

I personally think that the major performance difference today between one driver and another (loft and face angle being equal) is the shaft. This type of test would at least give a fair comparison between the component heads.

I know this has been done elsewhere but this forum is excellent in that people are willing to help others.
A place for people to post (short) videos of their swing for feedback and ideas for correction from others.

I would like to see more information on club building components. When perusing the various web sites and catalogs it is hard to know what is are quality components or not. I realise that club building only pertains to a tiny fraction of the audience however a little something every now and then would be nice.
