Adjustable: Is the New Square In Golf

We are waiting for the official statement from Nike…but we thought we would let you in on some of the rumors that have been swirling about the new technology that Nike will be using in their new driver lines for 2009

From what we have seen and heard, Nike will be using a technology that will allow golfers to change the loft and lie of whatever Nike driver they are playing this year. Basically how it works is quite simple. There will be an insert that is housed inside the hosel that allows for adjustments to be made to both the loft and lie of the driver. The sleeve will slightly off axis which will allow the golfer to make the adjustments.

Other Companies That Already Have Similar Technology

There are a couple golf manufacturers that have already patented similar technology…you just may never have heard about it because their name is not Nike. But here are a couple examples of Adjutable Loft/Lie drivers that already exist:

The plastic sleeve from Nike might work great but check out this similar idea by NewPlazaGolf…pretty radical design. Makes you realize that so much of our technology comes from both small companies and overseas manufacturers that you might never have heard of.

Nakshima Golf HTEC 460 Driver

Nakashima Golf’s recent development of interchangeable hosel technology has generated buzz among industry insiders and the HTEC driver has been described as “the most innovative development in golf club manufacturing.”  Check out their version of an Adjustable Loft/Lie Driver:

Who is going to use this? the average golfer cant even grip or swing the club…. Now you can also adjsut the club……… The people who can sense the difference in these adjustments are already a millionaire playing on the tour ………. this is for techno weenies who dont really play golf and enjoy it. All this techno reminds me of the oversize tennis racket…. However it does reflect a cheap customization and will help some to enjoy the game ….. Not for me but for some….

Adjustable Face angle and Lie angle. Not Loft. Hit a hook? Flatten the lie and open the face. You get the point. Driver will have 8 different settings. Feels incredible, think original SQ Tour. Ships 1/1/09.

What matters is how heavy these parts are.

OEM’s are listing a much lighter than actual weight on these. Many are coming in at an extra 10 grams.

Pro’s will not play these over standard shaft install methods because they actually compromise the performance of the driver.

For example with Callaway and Nakashima offerings they actually move the CG closer to the heel.

Adjustable Lie sounds good to me but only on irons and clubs that are supposed to impact the turf.

Adjustable loft is no big deal because the effective loft is related to how you hit the ball. For example 80+% of golfers hitting a 15* come into it at around 9-12*.

      Cameron,

This is not an illegal club…it is only considered illegal if any adjustment is made during play. But they are already out there in some of the older models and being used on Tour.

The Nakashima driver is solid…but the “Invent” driver by far has the best hosel adjustment in regards to accuracy and feel. We shall see how the Nike feels.

Its an illegal club. You cant alter the club during play. I dont see what the big deal is about it. I do like the HTEC though. I like the fact that it doesnt look like it needs a wrench.
