The Shoe Philes – Nike Lunar Clayton

Written By: Tony Covey

“Nike Golf introduces the Nike Lunar Clayton, a shoe that celebrates the heritage and history of the sport of golf while providing athletes with superior comfort, supportive fit and an aesthetic appeal suitable for wear both on-and-off-course.”

I’m not sure how the boss is going to feel about turning MyGolfSpy into MyShoeSpy this week, but he keeps telling me that we’re an equipment site, and so now it’s my job to convince him that what the golf companies keep telling me is true:

“Footwear (golf shoes) is equipment” – Nearly everyone who makes a golf shoe

As I mentioned when I wrote about PUMA Golf’s new Monolite, I’m fully aware that there are plenty of you that get excited – maybe even unnaturally so – about golf shoes (Not that there’s anything wrong with that). And so, given the initial reaction to the pics we posted from Nike’s Innovation Unleashed event, I have no doubt that some of you are going to be downright titillated by the release of Nike’s new for 2014 Lunar Clayton.

If you need some alone time, by all means…

Meet Clayton

In perhaps more politically correct terms, Clayton is Nike’s modern take on the classic wingtip Cap Toe Oxford style. In the white model the Lunarlon outsole (I believe the color is Nike’s Venom Green) gives the shoe a bit of a modern twist that’s recently been described as “subtly loud”.

I like loud. I can learn to live with subtle.

More to the point (my point anyway), with its retro good looks, and spikeless design, Clayton brings some serious pimp style to the golf course. I thought I heard “Shaft” playing the first time I slipped them on my feet.

Whether or not that’s what Nike was going for…who knows?

Clayton was inspired by seriously high-end Italian footwear, and well, once Nike gets inspired, some pretty cool things almost always happen. I’ve learned that Nike Golf pretty much lives at the intersection of innovation and inspiration, so it’s not completely surprising that Nike would develop a high-end, handcrafted, spikeless golf shoe. Non-conformity is also sort of a Nike thing.

Nike believes there’s a market for Clayton. Whether or not that proves to be true is more or less up to you.

Deconstructing Clayton

Clayton’s upper is made of waterproof leather. We’ve already mentioned Nike’s Lunarlon (cushioning) outsole. The two are joined by a leather welt (part of that whole classic look thing), which helps to keep everything together (and keep your feet dry). Toss in a new lacing system, a molded rubber outsole, and a premium sock liner, and you’re left with what Nike claims is handcrafted leather shoe that, unlike other high-end leather golf shoes, requires zero break in.

But How Does it Fit?

I’m always a little wary of declaring any golf shoe uncomfortable. My feet are different from yours. If you want to get into specifics, mine are probably shorter and fatter than yours. Depending on the shoe, I’m sometimes better off in a wide (for reference, anything narrower than the adidas adizero, and I need a wide). What fits me well might not fit you, and vice versa.

My samples of the Lunar Clayton are size 9.5. My foot…it’s probably a solid 9 ¼, which means 9.5 is usually right (9.5 is what I wear in every other pair of Nike Golf Shoes I’ve ever owned).

Comparatively speaking, the Clayton’s run a bit longer (closer to a 9 ¾, maybe even 10), and are noticeably narrower than say Nike’s Lunar Control. There’s not a chance in the world I could wear the Lunar Clayton in my standard size 9.5, and that’s a bummer.

Nike Lunar Clayton-9

I’m waiting to hear back from Nike on the availability of wide sizes, but for now my advice is that fat-footed among you stay away from the standard medium width models.

UPDATE 1/2/2014

The Lunar Clayton is indeed available in wide. Nike sent me a 2nd pair in 9 wide. The wide version of the Clayton is reasonably comparable to the medium width in just about any other Nike shoe. The leather is definitely a bit stiffer than the synthetics used in most modern shoes. I’m going to wear them around the house for the next couple of week, and if all goes well, they’ll travel with me to the PGA show later this month.

Warranty Info

In addition to the 2-year limited waterproof warranty, Nike also offers a 45-day limited comfort warranty. Basically, if you’re not happy with the comfort or cushioning (which is really still just comfort), grab your receipt, bring them back to the authorized retailer you bought them from, and Nike will give you your money back.

Can’t beat that, right?

My Personal Clayton Devastation

Friends, I am a devastated (as a man can be about shoe troubles) that the Lunar Clayton doesn’t fit. This is one seriously boss golf shoe, and its incompatibility with my foot nearly ruined Christmas. I’ll keep you posted on wide-sized availability. If it happens, you can bet I’ll be near first in line to check them out.

Pricing and Availability

I have the shoe. I love everything about the shoe but one thing, they are incredibly painful to wear! The leather around the heel bone is very hard and unforgiving. I’ve worn them for at least 20 rounds now, all walking, and it still bruises my heel bone! I’ve hoped the would have broken in by now, but to no avail. I will update this when (if) they actually do become comfortable.

I’m not made of money, so when I splurged on these it devastated my golf shoe budget and I will have to learn to live with these. Hopefully the break in soon!

I like the black version better than the white.
I could go with the white, though I’d prefer a less brash color than that yellow sole skirt.
As for the price, well…ugh. Way too high for a show like this.
As for the fit, I can’t comment on this particular model, but I can comment on previous Nike models.
I’ve found that Nike shoes almost always feel too narrow. And I normally wear a medium width shoe, so I have no special needs regarding width.
Nike makes their shoes too narrow, plain and simple.
I’ve never found that Nike has made comfortable shoes, ever, and I’ve tried on a lot of their models, though not the more recent shoes that mimic more casual athletic shoes.
I’m not particular picky either. I’ve worn mostly Footjoy for years, and they’ve been comfortable right out of the box. I’ve tried on other brands, and while I usually prefer Footjoy, I can say that I could wear most of those other brands fairly comfortably if I had to do so.
      But not Nike.
Nike running shoes or basketball or tennis shoes are fine. But their golf shoes need an overhaul in the sizing department.

I like the looks of the shoe but too expensive. I wore wing tip leather shoes for years and really do not like the modern golf “sneakers” Not enough support.I would like to try a pair however when a product probably costs less than $25 to make and they charge $250. No way

Truly miss metal spikes. Traction works. Aerates as you walk the green.
Soft spikes suck. Best for collecting goose poop here on L.I.
$250 for green soled tennis shoes in white? Should look great after a few rounds!
Only Freddy could get away with this foolishness.

BTW- does anybody make a contrasting colored wingtip golf shoe? my dad used to rock a pair back in the day and I’ve always wanted some…

These are, by far, the ugliest golf shoes I think I’ve ever seen. The “wing tip” style is so outdated and out of style, that’s why shoe manufacturers are putting this style out to pasture and come up with some modern designs. There’s no way in hell I’d be caught wearing these things.

i think these look pretty good, but am wondering it they come in contrasting color patterns, ie- black toe and saddle, white body…
oh, and also, these are NOT wingtips. they are cap toe.

For now they come in the black and slightly off-white colors pictured. My guess is that it’s an supply and demand issue. If the demand is there for a contrasting combo, I’m sure Nike will roll it out for 2015.

You’re totally right…got Wingtip in my head, and never looked back. Very much a Cap Toe Oxford. I’ve updated accordingly.

Not too bad looking with the goofy colors and all….. But the spike pattern??? I am really wondering how well they will hold to an aggressive turn. Why couldn’t they make them with the same sole their current lunarlon shoes have? I also have to admit… The swoosh is a bit on the large side.

I wonder if the Clayton is a marketing effort to go after older, more traditional golfers.

I don’t have the demographic numbers in front of me, but I’d guess that Nike wearers skew younger on average than FJ and older than Puma. At a $249 price point and wingtip style, that definitely screams older. But maybe I’m wrong, maybe they’re going after a Justin Timberlake sort of narrow-lapel, skinny-leg, retro-rat-pack style golfer. If that’s the case, I’ll shut up

But if they are going after an older golfer, I question the wisdom of the giant swoosh and I REALLY question the neon yellow, irregular profile sole. Maybe the shoe Tony was sent was a defect irregular, but those wavy lines look like crap. The stock photo black and white sole looks much better. For $250 and the pretense of pseudo-Italian style, you have the right to demand not one stitching or construction defect.

I like your mention of the Justin Timberlake style. Humorous yet true.
Yes, it does seem to suit that type of golfer.
But like you said, how many young hipsters are out there who are going to pay $249 for these. And don’t forget the porkpie hat :) that goes with the rest of that getup.

They look nice, but they do not look a “quarter of a G” nice. I’ll wait about 4 months until they hit the overstock websites right before the summer and find these for under a hundo!

$250 is a LOT of scratch for any shoe. It looks like it might be pretty cool, but still, I think Nike has better for a lot less $$.

Like the shoes, but like another reader pointed out, you have to wear long pants to pull off the look and 99% of my golf is played wearing shorts… So they’re a non-starter for me

Agree, could never be worn with shorts. I like a shoe where the sole blends with the uppers instead of appearing to be glued on as an afterthought. OK for Buddy Hackett and Red Skelton but not me.

IMHO… to pull off the look, you’ll have to wear long pants with this kind of shoe. Anything less than that, would probably look downright goofy.

Can’t find one good thing to say*. I the big swoosh on the side ruined any chance at a classic look. Less would have been more. Overall, the shoe looks like a plastic banana cream pie. *I like the sole, so that’s one good thing.
