First Look – Nike Golf’s Ultra-Exclusive MMProto Irons

A Full Set

You probably saw the Nike MM Proto 2-iron that Rory McIlroy used to win The Open Championship.

At the time, most of us assumed the MM Proto was a one-off driving iron not too dissimilar from TaylorMade’s Ultimate Driving Iron. It turns out Rory’s 2-iron was really just the beginning.

Nike staffer Thorbjorn Olesen posted a pic to Instagram yesterday which basically let anybody who was paying attention know that the Champion Golfer of the Year’s 2-iron would soon be joined by a 3, 4, 5…you get the idea. The MMProto is a full set of irons.

mmproto

Gone in 60 Seconds

The MMProto irons go on sale August 4th, and here’s my prediction, they’re going to sell out…and fast. If you want them, you better show up early because there’s not a doubt in my mind that demand will exceed supply.

That’s right…Nike…blades…sold out. FAST!

I’m calling it right now.

Only 40 Sets

Yeah, I probably should have led with the fact that only 40 sets of the MMProto irons will be available to the public.

“The Nike MM Proto Irons are a limited run of blades designed exclusively for the tour. These irons represent years of testing and development with the world’s best athletes. The prototype design and technology was developed collaboratively by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and the engineers at The Oven, Nike Golf’s R&D Facility and Tour Shop.”

You want exactly what the pros play? Here ya go.

940x640q80 (5)

Each of the 40 sets will be laser engraved with Nike’s the Oven logo, and will be individually numbered.

Buyers will be able to work one-on-one with a Nike Golf expert to get your specs dialed in, get you sorted out with the shaft and grip of your choice, and if you so choose, some custom stamping and paintfill as well.

mmproto

Your clubs will be meticulously inspected before they ship to you.

What’s the Catch?

As with all things golf industry-related, there’s sure to be some frustration. The 40 sets are all right-handed. They’re available to US residents only, and there’s a limit of one set per person.

Also, they’re $1500.

Unspecified other restrictions may apply, and Nike reserves the right to cancel or modify this offer at any time.

More to Come?

Even I’d hate to venture a guess as to whether or not Nike would release a non-Ovenized version of the MM (no longer proto) to the masses. I hear a fair amount of grumbling from guys about Nike not offering a full set of true blades, but realistically, blades are nobody’s top seller.

It’s very possible that enough for the tour guys, plus 40 sets for the rest of us is the right number, but you never know.

If nothing else, this is a clever and cool way to all but guarantee you can get people to pay a little attention to your brand, while moving product with relative ease. It’s not unrealistic to think that this small batch, super-limited, custom release thing will eventually be a part of every golf equipment manufacturers arsenal.

Save the Date

In case you missed it the first time. Irons go on sale August 4th at 10AM Eastern Time at Nike.com only, and it’s suggested that you follow @nikgolf on Twitter for additional launch details.

Ron, AWOL, there’s nothing wrong with starting a sentence with and. It’s discouraged in Elementary school writing class because it’s a bad habit to start every sentence wih and. That’s only because when you start every sentence with and your writing will read like a toddler talking. The talented or educated writer can start a sentence with whatever he likes. And you better believe it. It’s called artistic license. Or simply choice. Just as releasing only 40 sets of irons is a brilliant business decision because we’re still talking about it. Ron- Nike does sometimes grip their clubs with bad grips, but that doesn’t mean Nike Golf as a whole is a Greedy dumb rich idiot company, it’s a remarkably successful business model. Look at the rise of Nike Golf sine 1996. You really think they’re dumb?

Awol I agree and not only that but the technology the government is holding back from the public and Im talking the alien tech the military has in area 51 , cars that can run on water free energy the fact that we along with russia and they alien greys that have joint bases on Mars, thats right beleive it or not but its all fact and true, I know this is as far off topic as you can get lol. The government has covered up alien bases on the moon which is one of the reasons we are not aloud back there and have not for decades is because of this reason, its fact the government has been working with and still is working with different types of alien species in underground bases across the country and world, they have technology from them that can cure cancer within 24 hrs with no side effects but are making way too much money from the pharmacies and through other things which its all kept from us . These are all comming from whisle blowers who all worked at area 51 and from the air force who were on a need to know basis, alot of them were killed because of comming out with this info to the public. I have done a ton of research on these things and its been going on behind the publics back for decades, its a shame people dont have a clue what is going on in this world.

AWOL Thats why they should tax the shit out of these companies for importing these items back in to the US after they have been made but this country is 10 times more crooked than the golf business so that shouldnt surprise me. Theres nothing wrong in trying their clubs which I think they have come along way since the mid 2000s in which I think their blades feel better than miuras but when I go to a golf store and see their shirts for instance with a 90 dollar price tag on it while addidas and the other companies shirts are in the 50 to 70 dollar range it makes you laugh not to mention those expensive nike shirts are not structured right to fit properly in the first place in the arm pit area where the other companies shirts are and yet people cant see that. I just use the nike shirts for an example. Even the ferrules on there irons are the cheapest ones you can buy , I know thats irrelavent but I know these things cuzz I used to work in club repair not to mention the grips they put on their retail sets are the most cheapest ones you can put on a club where no other club company does this, I know you can change them but some people shouldnt have to do that after buying a 900 dollar set of clubs just to have decent grips on there, and its just plain wrong. These are the little silly things this company will stoop to do to save a buck and thats a big turnoff yet most people cant see that.

OK well this is interesting and i will feed into this. Seeing that this is a forum and many times its gets off subject i will have a go here. Good conversations begin and end on a golf course albeit this may not qualify, but since you brought it up. I will agree on stiffer tax penalties to companies that export labor and import the goods. While we are at it, these are changes i will throw in. No more campaign contributions from large corporations to politicians. VISA, Mastercard, etc. should have caps on the interest they can charge. Im not talking 26.9% how about more like 10%. Standardized tax for all classes say 14%, rich or poor you pay that. No more tax breaks because you already paid a million in taxes. Drug screens required on all welfare, WIC, food stamps and unemployment receivers. Government controlled gas prices. No more $3.89 during the work week and then all of a sudden a sunny weekend and its now $4.50 a gallon. Downsize military and eliminate foreign aid to countries that are not true allies. Finally all large corp companies be required to share profits more with their employees than shareholders. This would strengthen the middle class considerably. Of course this would all never happen. I guess this is all AWOL dreamland

Ron, im not going to disagree with you on the profit margins that these companies make. The problem is not just Nike it’s every company, i wont get into that because we all know that. I personally cant think of any club that is made in a America that offers all clubs that i would game and have left handed. Maybe Hopkins they have wedges and irons made in a America. You also know from previous articles that I dont like Nike much at all, but I still try their stuff to see if at one point it fits my game. Honestly im not an idiot and have been playing for 17yrs and i still would not pay $1500 for irons. Mainly because im not a pro to warrant that expense and frankly my game is not either. I like my GI irons but i do know what exceptional feel is from playing Mizunos for 7yrs before i started playing PING and Tmag. If you ask why i play PING and TMag now over Mizunos, well because they offered all clubs in left handed including drivers, woods, and hybrids and the stronger lofts helped me.

Why would anyone buy from a company that pays workers in swet shops a buck an hour in China to make their stuff and turn around and charge for instance a golf shirt 90 bucks for something that cost them 3 bucks to make, ya ya ya its business I understand that but its the princible of the whole thing and the way they treat the workers in China to do it, I researched alot of that kind of stuff and yet idiots like you support nike buy buying their stuff and why because Tiger uses it, he is the worst piece of shit on earth the way he treats people, but you guys look over all of that because your like kids who want what their hero plays , GROW THE F UP and dont hand me yr little paragraph about my rambling at least I know crooked these companies are.

Awol I seen that you started a sentence with AND which tells me yr not very smart you say you are, thats proof enough fr me, and by the way these golfers I know are former tour players from different sections and you think you have a better understanding of what a good club should feel like , miuras are not even big in Japan even the head pro at my coarse had a visit from a miura dealer , he tried every model and said they felt hard and clunky and told him none of these members here are that stupid to pay 1600 fr a set of irons and told the dealer out right that the miuras felt like garbage and this guy won numerous tournaments so Id say he is pretty qualified to give an honest opinion. Only guys like you are stupid enough to pay that kind of money for a set of irons or justify its worth it because of their forging, give me a F en break. I hit some guys miuras and they were not very good especially with the sweet spot so close to the hosel,, you would be hard pressed to find more that 1 person using those clubs on tour and in major amateur events and Im talking abt the pros on tour with no equipment deal.

I’m currently working on my third college degree. I have a Biological Science degree, Pharmacy Tech degree and currently working on my Radiography degree. As you would say go “F” yourself. I’m not one to shove education down someones throat because there are a lot more smart people out there that don’t have the paper work to show, and there are some dumb people that have degrees as well. In your case Ron, you’re dumb on both sides.

I dont understand why the things I mentioned about nike bothers others Im just speaking the truth and facts about this company, why would anyone buy a set of irons from a company like this that gives you those kind of cheap 1 dollar grips especially after spending about 8 to 900 for a set all because of a stupid swoosh stamped on there , how greedy can a company be especially a rich company like this, thats just crazy,, you say its business but all the other OEMS give you quality grips. Just because this set was reshafted in the oven makes doesnt make em any better than any other set you can order , they will feel and play no better than if you bought this set when it comes to retail, its just a marketing money making scheme nike is doing here but guys like you are sooooooo gullible and stupid, a fool and his money shall soon be parted. I played a set from the oven its the same shit, not miura which I dont know any decent player I talked to the liked them. They all said those miuras felt way too dense and felt like crap and these were experienced good players and NONE of them liked em, you guys need to smarten up and wake up and and realize this shit is in yr head.

Ron, what in the hell are you talking about. Are you trying to imply that we fellow commentors are stupid and worthless. And it doesn’t really take time to make sure things are spelled right, I don’t know about you but because i graduated high school, spelling is kind of a natural thing for me. Not sure why dollar grips are such a big deal to you. The first thing i do when i get new clubs is replace the grips to match the rest of my set, if i didn’t already order them with the new purchase. Grips get replaced every year i could care less which ones they came with. As per our previous discussion about the TMag TP irons a while back your postulate, (I say postulate because theories are proven), that Miuras feel dense was disbarred when an actual engineer replied to your comments that, if tolerances are tight and the same steel is used then the feel couldn’t be different based on density. In order to have a different feel in the clubs then your tolerances would essentially have to be different/variable or a different steel would have to be used. Remember all blades are essentially the same design and the actual difference in quality between them is their manufacturing tolerances. So maybe your “credible sources” are the ones that have mental issues.

What is with a company that makes a nice design set of clubs an only offers it to the pros and just a few sets to the public, to me thats not a good golf company, what the F makes those irons so good they can only be available to certain people, stupid as hell, plus they look cheap as hell with that big rediculous swoosh on there takes everything away from a decent looking iron design like that. The one thing that makes this golf company suck is that there tour dept or oven as they call it only makes good stuff fr the gys on tour and the hell with the public, they give you irons with a cheap looking ferrul and the cheapest grips money can buy to the public, especially the money this company makes , its F ing sinful. I so hope nike reads this would make my day.

They are a good investment to sell on the bay a few months later no dought, but the golfers on here or golfwrx or shall I say hacks only care abt what there bag looks like because they have no idea what club is good fr their game and the reason is mostly because they have no game. This is a pretty cool move in my opinion. Straight out of the sneaker playbook and I love it. Create demand for an unattainable set of irons, only to drive sales of your retail offerings. No one executes this play better than they do. Guarantee this will be come a regular move for them, where they will sell an extremely limited quantity of a tour or premium product at high-end speciality shops or on their site. Its a smart way to carve up the market and separate what you have to offer from the run of the mill stuff at big box.

$1500 ain’t so bad. For custom forged irons, that’s downright reasonable And they could have produced 10x or 100x that number and still not have risked overstuffing the market.

Maybe this is the viable model of production we’ll see going forward. Prices don’t really go down, but manufacturers simply make less product and perhaps they only make it on demand. The golf equipment industry becomes less of business where pre-fabbed combinations are jammed onto the shelves of Dick’s, and more a factory-direct pre-order business.

Actually I think this is a great marketing ploy for Nike. Giving the average Joe’s with deep pockets the ability to get ‘tour only’ equipment. I think TM and Callaway is watching this as well to see if they need to do it as well in the future. Yes, the $1,500 price tag is staggering, but that’s what you would pay for a Circle T Scotty on the secondary market. That’s what you would pay for some Miuras or Vega irons. Would I buy these? Well no because I’m left handed…but if they had some sets in lefty, I would need to occupy myself during the sale so that I wouldn’t do something stupid like buy them. They are beautiful irons. And all the attention you would get from the Oven really doesn’t put these that much more than what you would pay for forged irons from Titleist, Adams or Mizuno. Someone post up if you buy a set.
