Nike Ready to Drop Golf Version of the Air Force 1

Nike Ready to Drop Golf Version of the Air Force 1
Yet another iconic Nike sneaker heads to the golf course.

Adapting iconic sneakers from casualwear to the golf course has quickly grown from trend to business as usual for Nike Golf.

LF1g-angle

You’ve already seen the Jordan Trainer ST Golf, and now Nike is rolling out (actually, I think I’m supposed to say dropping) a golf version of perhaps its most iconic sneaker ever.

Nike describes the Air Force 1, which dates back to 1982, as the global street-culture standard, and looking at the landscape, it’s an assertion that’s hard to dispute. A blank canvas or sorts, the Air Force 1 has served as inspiration for Nike competitors and outright knock-off artists a like.

On-Course Credibility

LF1G-tread

Nike’s golf version of the Air Force 1, the Lunar Force 1 G, borrows heavily from the original design, but has been modified to include Nike’s Lunarlon material for lightweight cushioning, and the spikeless waffle-tread pattern from the Lunar Waverly.

It might be tempting to dismiss The Lunar Force 1 G as strictly a lifestyle gambit designed for golfers more serious about how they look than how they play, but this latest offering already has tour-level credibility.

LF1G-back

At a recent Nike Golf event in Los Angeles, I had a chance to ask Tony Finau what he thinks about Nike’s bold footwear offerings. As a guy who’s not afraid to change his golf shoe to match both his look and the course conditions, Finau will sometimes wear the Lunar Chukka and another shoe I’m not supposed to talk about yet, but he made it clear that the Lunar Force 1 G is his shoe of choice.

“My favorite is the Air Force 1, the black Air Force 1. They can match with anything. Super clean, super simple, I just love the look. I’ve been wearing Air Force 1s since they came out back in the day.” – Tony Finau

If I’ve learned anything from the response to Nike Golf’s re-imagined classics, it’s that Finau won’t be the only one you’ll see in golf’s version of the classic Air Force 1.

Now if only I could Nike to make a golf version of the Bo Jackson Air Trainer 1.

Availability and Pricing

Nike’s Lunar Force 1 G will be available in two colorways (white/white and black/white) beginning April 1 at Nike.com and select retailers.

Retail price is $140.

These are awesome! It’s about time major golf shoe brands begin not only making golf sneaks like basketball sneaks but also with some old school flair. These are a must buy as far as my guys are concerned.

love them – Had to rock the Nike Dunks golf shoes before – they have spikes though…

not sure how I feel about these waffle-tread patterns. I used to have golf shoes that were spikeless like this and actually felt as if it left more wear and tear on greens as I could see “tread” marks / indentations on the green. It would actually leave a waffle tread pattern the size of my shoe, where I never really saw this with my shoes with spikes.

On another note – buy shoes for style or tech?
not sure if I buy into all these new shoes have supposed new “tech” that helps you play better… i.e. under armour’s new shoes, fj’s freestyle shoes.

I had a pair of these ordered from our rep months ago, I’m so excited. Like you, I had the Dunks as well and while I like spikes, I thought they were just too heavy. I don’t the AF1’s will be an issue with greens.

I like to buy shoes for style and tech. There’s so many good options on the market right now.

I would love to see 11 Low’s. I’m hearing the AJ 9 Low that was leaked on the internet last week will be coming out this year, don’t love that one though.

I love the look of these. Retro and cool. Something to note (my personal pref), the cleaner, simpler look goes a long way. Even though these are retro-esque, I don’t see these going out of style anytime soon.

So nice that golf is leaving the old guard in the past. I’m not a huge fan of this shoe, I like my Lunar Control 3’s. That said I love the idea of changing the looks to tailor to the younger crowd. Get the Khaki and white polo look in a museum where it belongs.
