Exclusive Pics – Parsons Golf PXG Driver

Written By: Tony Covey

Hey Guys, we’re excited to bring you the best look you’ve had to date of the upcoming PXG 08 Driver from Parsons Xtreme Golf.

We’ve received some preliminary information on the new driver. Take it for what it’s worth given that we haven’t tested the PXG 08 for ourselves, but we’re being told that it offers abnormally high launch with low spin.

You can file that right next to Outrageous Speed.

Sources are telling us that in both player and robot testing, the PXG 08 prototype is, loft for loft, launching up to 1° higher, producing 300-400 RPM less spin, while increasing ball speed by 1-2 MPH, compared to it competitor’s drivers. If it’s true – and we have know way of knowing if it actually is – that’s certainly a recipe for increased distance.

What’s With All Those Damn Screws?

I know what you’re probably thinking…Bob Parsons must have gotten a pretty sweet deal on bulk Torx screws during a Home Depot clearance sale.

Apparently that’s not the case. The 16 (yeah, we think it’s a lot too) weight design (milled surface normal relative to the sole) seeks to tackle what Parsons engineers see as a limitation in current movable weight models. The way most manufacturers move weight is by taking one or two big weights and moving them to one or two alternative locations. That works as far as moving the CG is concerned, but it also isolates the mass in a relatively small space. Parsons engineers think there’s a better way.

PXG Driver 2x

By using a larger number of smaller 2.5 gram Tungsten and 0.5 gram Titanium weights (along with a wider area over which those weights can be re-positioned), Parsons can spread out the mass, which leads to higher MOI, while still allowing for significant CG movement. All of this creates greater fitting flexibility, and the potential to get more golfers to their optimum numbers.

In addition to optimizing CG location, the modular design makes it extremely easy for fitters to make small adjustments to both head and swing weight. This can have a significant impact on performance as well.

While the weights are designed to be easily adjustable by the user, the sheer number of them suggests this won’t be the most user-friendly adjustability system when it eventually hits the market.

Like many other adjustable drivers, the Parsons hosel is adjustable by +/- 1.5° in 3/4° increments.

As you might expect, the PXG 08 is engineered to deliver high launch, low spin, and maximum ball speed. The company isn’t making any specific claims at this time, but we’ve been told that Parsons won’t bring anything to market until it annihilates the competition. When we asked if the early results suggests the PXG 08 will do just that, the response was a very simple “so far, yeah“.

It’s Not Ready Yet

It’s important to note that the PXG 08 is a true prototype. There’s no release date yet. There’s not even an MSRP. It was only submitted to the USGA because Ryan Moore wanted to put in the bag alongside his PXG irons. World-wide availability is still a ways away.

Other than some guys quoting launch monitor numbers we have no way of knowing if the Parsons Xtreme 08 driver will annihilate anything, but we certainly look forward to finding out.

regular shafts available? Also like the different engineers approach. Are they former Home Depot employees with stock options.

I think it looks pretty nice at address. The fine tune adjusting makes sense. However with the unusually high amount of combinations who in gods name is going to be able to fit for this in an 1hr session let alone 2 or 3. Also seeing that each screw adjusts individually and overall relatively small differences. Is anybodies swing consistent enough to change a couple screws and see a difference. Even with drivers with no adjustibility ive seen people hit at 1700 rpms one swing and then the next swing come in at 2300-2500. Fine tuning all those screws on average swings who cannot consistently hit the same spin numbers just seem like a waste of time.

Ryan Moore was killing it with this driver today!! Almost holed out a Par 4 with this very Driver!! You all are putting too much thought in the looks, all that should matter is if it performs!! And judging by Ryan’s performance this year, I’d say YES!!

Although I’m sure the PXG hired some fantastic club designers, this club, and frankly their irons and putter lines, are not very good looking. From the abundance of screws to the awful logo the club isn’t too appealing. No matter what the performance data says there still has to be some curb appeal to compete with the other manufacturers. Even TM has that figured out and their clubs look great (and every new model adds 15 yards to your overall distance too, ha ha).Not sure where PXG is going with all this but it doesn’t appeal to me at all.

Believe this would look good as the gear shift in Danica Patricks Nascar stock car. She could wear all those screws as 12,366 different ear ring combinations. Or we could all go to Burt’s Deli to fill our belly with a great corn beef on rye. Page the cart girl please.

Higher launch and lower spin (especially 300+ rpms lower) is quite a feat. It is doubtful that this can be accomplished by moving around 2.5 gram weights, but let’s see what MGS’s testing shows. I am already seeing issues with folks who want to move head weights around, but don’t have a feel for how delecate the threads are on the adjustable weight ports. There’s a reason Callaway went to one big weight to flip. I am betting that we’ll see a simpler sole configuration in the final version of this driver, but I like the idea of being able to move weight closer to the face.

It looks awesome , classic, and initially I love it. But pricing aside, IMHO my key to a long term relationship with a driver is the perfect matching of shaft to head and for me that means easily available post sale shaft adaptors. Arguably, almost any shaft is available for any head but I’ve made too many purchases that I ended up regretting because of limited ability to post sale tinker. So despite my initial attraction to the beauty and design of the head, my guess is that unless the stock (or available) shaft fits me and my unrealistic expectations right off the demo, its never going past the first attraction phase.

That is a true “Screw” Driver!

Didn’t Tom Wishon mentioned that movable weights only have a practical impact to ball flight when it is 20g or more difference?

If the screws are meant for moving MOI only, then the sliding weight wooly ls be more efficient?

I like the idea of pre-release reveals — companies should look at it as sneak preview testing the way Hollywood has done for the past 90 years. That way if early audiences tell you something is wrong, you fix it in post.

It looks good and very Ping like from top and face on. From the bottom — eh, not so much. All those damn screws. For me, shifting the great big TMag and Cally weights didn’t do much of anything, what’s a bazillion little torx screws herded this way and that gonna do?

Better make sure all your holes are plugged before you play, you don’t want dirt in those threads. You can move 14 grams side to side or front to back, or in partial combination. If you leave some holes empty, you can boost that shift to 17.5.

But from all empty to all full, you can adjust the swing weight by a total of 40 grams which is quite a bit of play when you’re looking to adjust your SW and all without lead tape. That may be something.

I read your initial article on Parsons and was very excited to see a potential new player in the golf industry. I have kept my eye on Parsons golf web site and as of today’s date no info on any new releases. I just hope that with all the hype they at least are going to go into this full bore. Full bore means 100%. 100% means a LEFT handed offering. If we don’t see a left handed offering then you will know this will just be another 2 or 3 year experiment (toy) by Mr. Parsons and then it will be abandoned.

@RC must be thinking of the Humana Challenge (January 19th), in which Moore missed the cut.
Otherwise, Moore has done quite well this year.
Tied for 20th in January 9 Hyundai Tournament
Tied for 17th in January 29th Phoenix Open
After one round of this year’s Northern Trust, he is currently -2 and tied for 12th place overall thus far.

We all make mistakes once in a while. @RC was probably watching the Northern Trust and thinking of this week’s tourney when he posted about the cut Moore missed a month ago.
I don’t know if Moore was using that driver yet or not at that time.

I’ve heard that Parsons Golf has employed some former Ping designers for this driver, and from the angles other than the sole view, it is said to resemble a Ping driver. I don’t think that’s a bad thing :)

I’ve been reading comments elsewhere about how ugly this driver is with all the screws but I’ve got to say I think it looks pretty good at address. The weighting concept makes sense, I like the idea of so much adjustability, although that could turn into a pit of no return, and would hope for the price (assumed pretty high) buyers will get an assortment of weighted screws included.

Will be following with interest …

When I saw the sole side of the club it looked like a piece of armor or a piece of the shuttle fell off. But the look from the crown or the face looks tremendous. I’d love to try this baby to see what it has. What really caught my attention is the outrageous number of possibilities to toy with in regard to the weight ports and the assorted weighted screws. I’m not a statistician but the number of possibilities is mind numbing. I’d love to play around with it but the reality is I don’t think I’d live long enough to try out all the possibilities.
