INSIDE LOOK – Phil Mickelson’s 2010 Masters Putter

Over the weekend I am sure most of you got to see quite a bit of the putter Phil Mickelson was gaming at the 2010 Masters.  There is a lot of BUZZ going on right now about this particular putter.  Well way back in August of 2008 MyGolfSpy readers got the very 1st look at the putter that is now known for winning this years Masters. Back in 2008 we got you guys a spy look at the 3D files that were used during the actual development process for the putter.

Phil’s Attention To Detail

Phil Mickelson has always had a weak spot for a classy lookin’ blade. And this new model is no different…this blade might just be a MYGOLFSPY all-time favorite…great lines.  Mickelson has been using a Odyssey PM (Phil Mickelson) prototype for years.  He usually keeps between 2-5 PM prototype putters around for different types of course conditions.

The Story Behind The Putter

Phil seems to have put a lot of trust in the guys at Callaway/Odyssey when it comes to his putters.  In the past his Odyssey PM Prototype Putters were specifically designed for him by long-time Odyssey Designer Ron Hettinger.  Now Phil seems to have even more input into the final design of the head.

For this most recent PM Prototype edition Phil actually went to the Callaway Test Center in Carlsbad, and with the help of Odyssey’s R&D team, he created exactly what he was looking for.  Not too shabby Philly boy!

Do you think Phil’s victory will single handedly bring about a revival of the classic blade?

Well depends Burnz – blades have won other big tourneys in the past and have kept the classic blade in many gear heads bags or at least collections.

And it depends on how Callaway plays this card. I am talking to them right now about whether or not they are going to release it to the public…should have word soon. If they do and do it the right way there are for sure chances that you could see it in more bags…and especially if he wins another major with it. If they would have timed it perfectly it would be ready to go ASAP….have to wait and see.

These pics are computer generated aren’t they? I wonder how the one piece insert differs in feel from the usual XG two piece? I think this beauty might go retail, if not now it never will I guess…

Do you think Odyssey will come out with this putter like MacGregor did when Jack won in ’86?

Maybe he’ll work with Odyssey to re-engineer it again after missing that eagle on 15 Sunday! (jk, he had a bad read, the stroke was perfect) What a great second shot he had though, I couldn’t believe that the guy that won the Masters last Sunday was the guy who’s been coming in 40-75th so far all year!

Also big ups to Tiger choking on the tap in on 16, I couldn’t believe it!
