“This Is A Special Club I Made Myself”

Yesterday, Phil Mickelson hit a hybrid shot no fan had ever seen before. He basically hit a flop shot with a hybrid…almost impossible to do because the trailing edge is never set-up for this on a hybrid design. But with the high rough at the U.S. Open lurking in Phil’s thoughts…he thought he should meet with Roger Cleveland (Head Designer at Callaway) to come up with a prototype hybrid to get him through the weekend.

QUOTES:

“Phil really led the design process,” Colton said. “He told us what he wanted to see and the type of functionality he wanted, and our designers translated that. From sketch to wax to finished product he’s been involved. He’s seen it in all the different stages of design and development. In fact, we made modifications to the original prototype that we had because we had it in wax. He played around with it, looked at it and had some suggestions and those modifications were taken into account.”

“It’s a good example of how we listen to the tour players,” Colton said. “There are no plans to commercialize this product, but we might given the way it performed this week with Phil. We still have some learning to do about who it is best for and how it behaves … We plan to build a broader set of prototypes that we will do more testing with.”

As you can see from the image…the entire back half of the hybrid has been removed to allow for a more graceful entry into deep rough. He actually hit a flop shot with it yesterday from 164 yards out…he opened up the face like he would a wedge and launched a moon rocket that landed within 20 feet of the pin.

MyGolfSpy Knew More Then Callaway

Not even some high-ups at Callaway knew anything about this one. Last week we started putting some calls and emails into our sources at Callaway…although they all said they knew nothing about this one…they commented that MyGolfSpy knew more then they did on this Mickelson hybrid design. So no details on specs or whether or not this might make it to stores…sorry guys.

In addition to my comment above: Since I started playing the “Original Ginties”, that I bought direct from Stan Thompson in 1978 (Not Louisville Knockoffs), I have made a number of similar shots from the same distance, even to elevated greens 40′ above my lie or in heavier rough with my #7 Ginty with similar results. This club also works quite well around the greenside rough for a pitch and run utility club. Why buy new clubs when well maintained “Vintage, Well Designed “clubs produce the desired results when played properly!!

What’s with the comments about this design needing to be approved? The Rules of Golf clearly spell out the guidelines for clubs and any restrictions that apply. If this head was made to fit within the rules as written, then it is deemed to be conforming by default. There is no need to have this pre-approved for use.

WHEN DID THE PGA APPROVE OF THIS DESIGN?

      1) It wasn’t even a PGA tournament, the U.S. Open is ran by the USGA
      2) as jll62 below says, so long as its face wasn’t super-springy because it still has to obey the COR rules, and so long as it’s dimensions and look wasn’t outside the rules anyone can download free from usga.org, then the club is fine.
Yes, this means you can make your own club, too, and still have it conform.

Rather interesting. Too bad PM is to young to have known Stan Thompson and/or played any of “The Original Ginties” (Persimmon or metal) ,that make the “New Age Hybrids” look sick when played in the proper manner!! History will show that the “Warbird ” sole plate was not developed by Callaway and only made after Callaway bought the design patent from the Estate of Stan Thompson!! Stan developed the idea of the “Utility Wood”, first “metal swing machine” for testing purposes, and many other club innovations far ahead of the other clubmakers of his time! I derive great pleasure when I post a lower score than my companions with my “Vintage” Thompsons that I tell them are not for sale at any price because they work as well as, if not better than new clubs! From the pics it looks like the sole is like a bigger version of the Cleveland Niblick… If thats the case it might just be the next big thing for us regular golfers, especially if it comes out of the rough as well as Phil hit it… I take it this was designed primarily for the Bethpage rough? Would come in handy in Turnberry too if he makes it over the pond…

It is built like a standard hybrid except for the back half…where they removed much of the mass to allow him to open it up and get the rough easier.

This allows him to play it either way. I actually designed one like this a few years ago but mine also included a slanted toe area. Because golfers were wanting a V-Hull like a boat to use around the greens to chip. This way it had less contact surface area and would therefore slide through the rough or fringe like butter.

Phil design? Since 2005, that I know of, Warrior Golf have had a simular hybird. Inaddition, they have some great wedges too!

Come on now…I know the whole Warrior company…they never designed this. Their hybrids were all open models (copied) from other manufacturers. And there wedges are terrible…the weights and loft and lies are all off and the material used is garbage. And they are a scam company to boot. I wish I could find the cam video of them…it is terrible what they do to golfers.

Cool idea. I can’t believe he even though about wanting a club like that. I dont like our chances of seeing it at retail though. Why the produce a hybrid that is design to be an anti-hybrid. I thought hybrids were design to get high straight launching shot. That would be harder for the average golfer when they can buy that sits that wide open, But after writing all that I’d buy one.

It is a very interesting design, but it is obviously something we will never be seeing introduced into the Callaway line unless some magic really happens with the club.

They actually do this pretty often….especially for Phil. He has had quite a few on-offs made in his career. He also likes the design aspect more then some others.
