The “Real” PING S55 Iron Launches at The Barclays

It’s Finally Here

Friday we showed you a digital artist’s rendering of what the PING S55 iron might look like. Today, we’ re showing you the real deal s55 iron directly from PING. As you can see, the “real” S55 features a satin chrome finish, but otherwise, @jovineri was pretty close.

We’re wondering which design you like better?

The story from PING is that Hunter Mahan got his set several days ago. As with almost every new iron, the report is that Mahan is hitting the S55s higher and longer than the S56.

PING isn’t releasing full story yet…and do they the really need to? It’s a better player’s iron, so you can bet the emphasis will be on workability and control. Toss in the standard bits about higher launch, and well…I think you’ve got 95%+ of the story.

Here’s what PING has released about the new clubs:

  • Multi metal (tungsten toe, 17-4 stainless steel body) tour style blade
  • Thinner face than S56, larger Custom Tuning Port (CTP)
  • Tungsten toe weight adds forgiveness
  • Stabilizing bar for distance control
  • Stronger lofts
  • Available 3-9, PW

OMG! Stronger lofts. I can’t believe PING is crawling in the mud with the likes of TaylorMade, and Callaway, and Cobra…and…wait…everyone is putting stronger lofts in their irons. And you know what? Tour Pros don’t care, and the average golfer doesn’t care, and frankly, I don’t care either. It’s something for the purists to talk about, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s what you might call no big whoop.

The PING S55 irons will hit golf shops on November 1st. I’d expect retail price to be around $1000.

Not-Quite-PING S55 vs. PING S55

Here’s the side by side of our artist’s rendering (left) and the real PING S55 irons.

Which do you like better?

BEN SEATTLE They thin the face to make a more trampolene effect fr more distance and softens it up with the cartridge insert, Ben i DONT KNOW WHERE YOU GOT YOUR INFO ON ME BUT THAT WAS A CLASSLESS RESPONSE YOU MADE, and you must be one the 15 handicappers that are all in here hoping the clubs will help them be good because they cant play a lick .

BEN SEATTLE what I found out today from a close freind of mine who is good freinds with a man inside I mean really inside ping told him the ping irons on tour are have nickel mixed in with 17 4 to softenend them up abit so what you get at retail at ping isnt what the big ping players are getting, he found this out by mentioning to him that the s56 he tried out felt alittle hard and asked him that the pga guys were using that hard 17 4 he that when he was told about the REAL deal of whats going on out there, he knows this guy in ping cuzz he played some mini tours and met him while he was playing the asian tour , now he is in deep really deep with tour, and not wrx. But he did mention that the ping players on the mini tours get the same retail 17 4 heads, he mentioned that Cabrera Mahan Oostheuizen Jimenez Bubba Westy and a few others are using a softer mix of nickel and made in arizona. So if you think that your ping heads from china are on the same assembly line as those gys I mentioned you are in dream land and its time to wake up.

I play the S56 and before that the S58, both fantastic sets of irons. I’m sure the S55 will continue this fine and often over looked line of irons!

Are you kidding me people. The Artist rendering looks way better in a dark finish. So much easier to aim the club head behind the ball. I’m not a ping fan, but I’d buy a set of those in a black finish.

The colour does not help aim lol… Taylormade said the white was easier to line up then made a black R1 ????

And who can argue with that? Certainly your vastly club-designing experience (not to mention all those top-level competition victories) will trump what those clowns at Ping know. Just forget that for the past years Ping engineers have been painfully seeking incremental improvements to the stellar s56 and this is the result. No doubt, that “thinner face” gimmick will be a complete bomb, the club will be a dog, sales will be non-existent and Ping will continue on it’s downward spiral into obscurity. Yeah, like your imput means neither Jack nor Diddley. (And all this before hitting the new s55 or even seeing the club in person. Brilliant.)

Ping has made a good looking iron? What’s up with that? I mean the come out the Anser their first forged iron and it has more crap on it that a grandma mantle.

No offense but I don’t understand why we are still talking about the rendering. Considering patent pics were already released and no one releases their player clubs in a black finish I don’t think he was close at all. It took no imagation just putting piece of the existing line together. His pictures looks good, but that’s it. I don’t get all this talk about the rendering still….after we know what they look like now… Sorry

To get back on topic, I’ve never been a big fan of the thick top lines and heavy offsets of Pings. Doesn’t mean a thing, since far better golfers than I have used them on tour with great success. The latest Pings appear to have gone more towards a players look club, which makes it far more desirable to many of us. The finished product is cleaner looking than the artists rendering. But the price of forged Pings have been a tough sell for me.

wouldn’t you think these manufacturer’s could make clubs geared to the majority of the players with the same kind of style and look as the single digit players.
I guess I will be waiting another year until someone makes a club for what I call an average player with the style and look as a forged.

Here’s a list of “players’ gave improvement” irons you should check out: Mizuno JPX-825 Pro and MP-H4, Titleist AP2, Bridgestone J40 Dual Pocket Cavity, Cobra AMP Forged, Wilson Staff Ci11, Tour Edge Exotics CU, Nike Pro Combo and Pro Combo CB, Ping i20 (also the Ansers, although those are very expensive), Cleveland 588 TT, Callaway X-Hot Pro, Taylormade Rocketbladez Tour, Adams CB1/CB2/Pro a12.

Mind you, these are the most recent models for the top companies I could name. If you want to find even better deals, you could look into past models similar to these. Hope this helps.

I seem to notice that most of the suggestions on manufacturer’s websites state that single digit handicappers are the “better players” and can play the blade style clubs.

I firmly believe that you should play whatever makes you happy.

Of course you have to take the good with the bad. Looking down on that traditional sexy blade may make you feel great and confident until you hit it half an inch away from the center of the club and lose 30% of your distance instantly.

It’s merely a choice as no one will stop you from buying a set of “player’s irons”. Do you want to score as low as possible without making perfect contact every time? Or do you want to feel great when you look at your clubs and suffer the consequences when you are having a bad swing day?

Can someone tell me what is considered a better player?
      These clubs look great.
It’s seems that the clubs made for people who play in the 80’s low 90’s look like shit.

Better player is suggestive, if you hit your clubs near center and don’t need help with a slice or getting the ball up you’re okay for any iron out there. If you find you need help on toe/heel hits than GI helps. Can’t get the ball into the air and stop slicing, SGI helps.

I shoot in the low 80’s and have trouble off the tee with anything above a 3 iron. Last round I lost 7 strokes to tee shots, 3 to putting, and 1 to chipping (was trying to get too fancy). So, 84 – 11 = 73. My irons (MP Blades) were not what was keeping my score inflated. Never practicing putting and my inability to stop stroking my ego with long drives is what kills my scores.

If this sounds like you, you’re a better player.
