PGA + ProBagAds.com – Good or Bad For Golf?

New Golf Bag Ad Idea – (Good or Bad?)
We all know the PGA has had some financial troubles recently due to the economy…who hasn’t. They have lost a few sponsors but hey…they now have a lot of their pros twittering on Twitter to make up for it. I guess they think this will help improve their image and get more tourney support from companies with some deep pockets. It might not work but I think it is a pretty forward thinking on the PGA’s part.
“Project Bag Ad Schwag”
But this new form of advertising on the PGA Tour has us a little baffled. I am all for forward thinking but this one I really cannot even believe got approved. But we want to hear your opinion on this one. We actually do see some advantages …like being able to change ads on the fly and being able to have more then 1 ad per spot. But there seems to be a slew of downsides to what seems to be one of the most un-thought out plans the PGA has attempted in quite some time. Here are some of the details on the bag schwag:
- Michael Allen, recent Senior PGA Championship winner will be the guinea pig for “Project Bag Ad Schwag”
- Seems as though it is geared toward local advertisers…hmmm
- Increase interaction between fans & players…ok not a bad idea
- Tested at a limited amount of events
Tell Us What You Think (I Really Want To Know On This One)
I know this might take some time to digest…but take a minute while you have your coffee and tell us what you think about this. Both the good and the bad. This might be the future of advertising in golf so let’s see what we can come up with for improving this. Or if you think this is the stupidest idea you have heard all week let the company know about it. By the way if you didn’t notice the company that is putting this all together is advertising on the same bag…PROBAGADS.COM. Wonder why they have their ad done the old fashioned way and not on the screen…hmm?

Cool? Yes. Practical? Hmm… don’t know about that one. Being able to target local companies is kind of neat though. Interesting idea.
August 12th, 2009 at 7:24 am
I really dont see the appeal for a local company to fork over some of their hard earned cash to be put on a small screen almost no one can see.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
Interesting idea. Is it practical? Probably not. The ability to change ads and feature local companies is kind of cool. The text seems a bit small.

I agree it is innovative and forward thinking but honestly, have you ever tried to read what is on a bag? It is not easy with big stitched in letters and logos. From outside the ropes, this wil be like watching a 13″ TV frm 20 – 30 yds away. These ads will be great for the player and maybe the tour, but the advertisers will be the ones who stop the progress of this because the ads will not be effective.
August 12th, 2009 at 7:25 am
I agree 100% GolfbyMagic. Unless the camera zooms in on the golfer you can never read the ads. And it will be even harder when it is a small screen TV from a couple hundred yards away. But we will see.

Nascar does it so why not the PGA. The pro game is a money game today, so why not do this to grow that end of the sport! Refrain from this in amateur golf!
August 12th, 2009 at 7:28 am
Well I think the PGA is a little different from Nascar but they might have to take a page out of their book to become popular again.

What next xmas light for sales at target.
ridicules.
August 12th, 2009 at 6:42 am
I think this is a smart idea, but poorly executed. As you can see in the examples above the ads are barely legible due to the resolution and size of the screen. Most of golf fans won’t even be this close to the ad in order to read it.
What kind of return does this offer the sponsor? Sometimes sponsors get caught up in technology and don’t consider the execution.
Bag ads are better branding opportunities than sales tools. Slap a self-adhesive sticker to your bag containing a different logo each week and you’ll likely give a sponsor better visibility at a cheaper cost.
August 12th, 2009 at 7:49 am
I agree Kevin. I don;t see this lasting long in its current state.
August 12th, 2009 at 6:49 am
I totally dislike it. I am a traditional guy when it comes to golf; I like small heads, clean irons with no much graphics, thin top lines, simple blade putters and small carry/stand bags. This is just too flashy for my tastes and I hope it is not generalized to all golfers bags.
August 12th, 2009 at 7:50 am
It is definitely not traditional…but we will have to wait and see if it makes it as a permanent fixture on tour. My guess is…that it won’t.
August 12th, 2009 at 6:55 am
Enough already how much advertising must we be subjected to. I really don’t think it’ll make any difference anyway the public is already saturated with promotion and most people don’t even pay attention to it anymore. When are consumers going to get something in return for being subjected to this constant barrage of advertising?
August 12th, 2009 at 7:53 am
Well… finally somebody came up with a NEW idea… but I don’t think it will stick. It’s clearly a gimmick, and perhaps one that will excite people for a little while. I can already hear McCord and Feherty making their comments about it. But it’s not useful ad space.
August 12th, 2009 at 7:56 am
Yeah it is nice to see some new innovation but I feel you are right on Chris…I don’t think it will stick.
August 12th, 2009 at 9:07 am
Wow let’s all give the PGA a round of applause first they take our grooves they they entertain us with stupid ideas like this. I’m shure every caddie on tour wants one of these bags as if their jobs aren’t hard enough, i just hope I don’t see one of these in a week when I’m working at the wyndham or I may ask the player for a tv guide and the remote
August 12th, 2009 at 9:10 am
LOL…I always love your comments.
August 12th, 2009 at 9:25 am
I wonder if it plays DVD’s… for when you’re stuck behind Paddy and Tiger on Sunday…
August 12th, 2009 at 9:25 am
How about when a sponsored player makes a birdie the local stations show one of their ‘brief’ commercials! Or when it’s the U.S Open when a player makes a par! Imagine “this up and down by Phil Mickelson is sponsored by Barclays keeping your accounts out of the rough!” I hope the caddie gets paid more. How long before players putt on advertised greens like cricket etc? Instead of the announcer saying the ball breaks to the right they’ll say it comes in off the M in Mobil! I don’t think the technology is cheap enough to be effective not at the moment anyway.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:28 am
Hilarious Chris! Great comment.
August 12th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Soon all the sponser tags on bags, will be looking like all the crap that is put on stock cars, tags all over the bags, shirts, pants shoes, hats is this really what golf is all about?
August 14th, 2009 at 7:26 am
I hope not Dan.
August 12th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
What a pathetic pile of crass commercialism. I don’t want golf to turn into a pond scum filled swamp like Nascar. If this is what it takes for pro golf to survive, then it doesn’t deserve it.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:26 am
Yeah I dont see how this will stick DogBreath. Good name
August 12th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
In addition to my comment above, I don’t watch NASCAR and very little Pro Golf! I have 5 bags & 5 sets of clubs, and none of the bags even carry my name! I couldn’t care less, because I play this game for the pleasure it produces and the long walk! Let the Pro sport evolve, and make silly mistakes in the process. Just like putting Woods & Harrington “on the clock” in the last event! Walter Hagen was a “Showboat” and would have loved this!! What do “You Boys” think of that?
August 13th, 2009 at 5:59 am
Interesting but execution is worse than gas station kiosks that show and tell the latest consumer captives at the pump. Pro bags have been ad delivery systems for decades. This is first time for animation. It is delivered from the wrong location on bag however. Needs to be a crawling ad using LEDs for stronger visibility – placed where the Taylormade word is, vertical to the ground when bag is standing and horizontal to ground when bag is being carried. I’ll send you my bill. Too bad you have a Pat Pending.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:25 am
I think the crawling ads could be even more distractive then these tv’s.
August 13th, 2009 at 7:29 am
How to add more marketing value to the ‘Big Show’? That is the question. Ads on bags are not new. This new concept has merit, similar to the big changeable banners behind home plate in baseball and at basketball games in the arenas. I agree it is more of a branding medium than product sales but hey, Coke is Coke! The image has to be large and readable out in the sun. Not sure the technology does this very well from the examples. Only one of them is easily identifiable. On the economic side I wonder how much it costs and wish I could afford it!

I just think people might say that it does not belong in golf. How is this going to help the game? How much money would this make?
August 13th, 2009 at 7:43 am
Let’s say I wanted to advertise my small business at a local Tour event… I’d make a deal with a Tour Players agent in advance and have a quality Tour Staff Bag that he/she would carry and it would properly display my local business … Now that would be cool but probably never happen due to the main sponsors of the particular player … If it would work, the bag would be used only for the one tournament then I would own it and keep it on display at my business and I’d have something interesting to keep forever.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:22 am
Yeah and the PGA would most likely have an issue with that as well. Kind of stepping on their toes. But unique idea Berger.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:04 am
Awesome idea if there were movies and tv shows playing instead of advertisements no one will even be able to see clearly. In my mind, golfers make enough money on advertisements and sponsorships as it is. Do they really need to start shoving LCD screens into their bags so they can promote 4 or 5 more companies? Yes, it’s innovative and forward thinking, but player’s hats and shirts are already filled with logos. Where does it all end? Soon the player’s clothes and bags will look like the clothes they wear in the movie “Idiocracy.”
