Is This the Best Shoe In Golf?

Written By: Tony Covey

Yesterday morning we received a media kit, scratch that (I literally did), Comfort Kit promoting PUMA Golf’s new TITANTOUR IGNITE golf shoe. Yes, apparently TTITANTOUR is one word, and you should scream it. At the very least you should #IGNITEit, because like all notable releases TITANTOUR IGNITE comes with its own hashtag.

#yourdamnright

The kit itself features a pair of the new shoes, travel pillow, and a travel blanket. The clear message is that PUMA’s latest golf shoe (PUMA probably would like me to call it PUMA’s latest innovation) provides all day comfort, that comfort never quits, or possibly that air travel sucks.

Whatever…blankets go over big in this house, so I’m good with it.

PUMA IGNITE SHOE-105

The Obligatory Tech Story

As with basically everything in the golf industry the TITANTOUR IGNITE is packed full of coded brand-specific technology that may or may not be actual technology. Let me run down the list for you:

  • IGNITE FoamRevolutionary (and proprietary) foam that’s ultra-responsive and comfortable. Not unlike adidas’s BOOST (also proprietary), IGNITE foam provides energy return, stability, and of course, comfort.
  • PWRCOOL powered by Outlast® – This is the temperature regulating material in the sock liner. Apparently it uses phase change materials to absorb, store, and release heat. Frankly, I have no idea what phase changing materials are, but if it keeps my feet cool for another season, then it’s great.
  • Premium Materials – It’s a leather shoe, and PUMA says it’s durable.
  • Epic Performance Last – That’s right, not just performance, but EPIC performance is not only built into the shoe’s last, it makes for a sleeker shape that provides good looks and a great fit.
  • DUOFLEX SOLE – The sole is cut up into individual segments which help maximize power in the golf swing.

What I Really Think

PUMA IGNITE SHOE-101

It’s easy to poke a little fun at all the clever names golf companies come up with for their technologies, but lets look past that for a moment while I give you some stuff to think on.

When PUMA purchased Cobra…actually even before PUMA purchased Cobra, the company was making some of the worst shoes in golf. Don’t get me wrong, they looked cool, and they had some unique tech bundled in, but I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that unless you have those skinny little euro feet, ride around in a cart all day, and never dare challenge an incline of more than 3°, the damn things were practically unwearable.

Putting this as eloquently as I possibly can, they totally sucked.

A few seasons ago, however, PUMA brought in Grant Kundson from adidas Golf to help design their golf shoes. Since Knudson joined PUMA there have been systematic year-over-year improvement to the shoe line.

Over the last 3 seasons or so, PUMA’s golf shoes have come a long (long, long, long – and yes, I know that’s lazy writing) way.

They no longer suck.

PUMA IGNITE SHOE-104

We can talk about tech, and foam, and maybe even epic foam, but for the most part I want two things from my golf shoes; stability and comfort. And of course, if the latter isn’t there, then the former doesn’t matter, and neither does waterproof-ness or durability.

The last thing I want is a miserably uncomfortable shoe that keeps my feet dry and lasts forever.

So anyway, Knudson and his team have been steadily improving the PUMA golf shoe line to the point where, in my personal opinion, the 2015 TITANTOUR was the best golf shoe on the market.

PUMA IGNITE SHOE-108

The basis for that assertion is four-fold. It’s stable. It’s the most comfortable spiked golf shoe I’ve ever worn (and it’s like that from the moment you first slip it on your feet). It’s held up flawlessly as my go-to shoe of the season (it’s durable), and, as well as any regular shoe can, it’s kept my feet dry.

What more can you ask for? It’s the shoe I’ve recommended most often this season.

So while I may not feel the need to scream #IGNITEit every time someone brings up the subject of golf shoes, and I’m not sure I have anything that matches the Surf the Web/Green Gecko Colorway (frankly, I didn’t realize web surfing and lizard were actually colors…I feel old), I have high hopes that the IGNITE and IGNITE Premium will be even better than the original TITANTOUR, and that would actually be a reasonably Epic Performance…or should I say EPIC PERFORMANCE!

A high bar has been set, but after stomping around the house for 20 minutes, I think PUMA may have cleared it. I’ll take them for an 18-hole walk a little later this week to find out if that’s real.

Oh, Hey, That Fowler Kid Made a Video

Technically, I haven’t been told that a spikeless version will be in the offering, but check out the caddie’s feet for a preview of what else might be part of the TITANTOUR IGNITE line-up.

Availability, Colorways, and Pricing

The TITANTOUR IGNITE will be available in White/Surf The Web/Green Gecko, White/Black/Drizzle (yes – drizzle is fo shizzle also a color), Black/Steel Gray beginning available December 1, 2015.

Ok, forget this nonsense and order a pair of FJ myjoys – choose size (each shoe can be different size, width) and design (likelyhood is you will not see another guy wearing sane shoe as you – ever) youself. Go to proshop and get measured. Cheers

This past season I purchased Puma monolith spikeless, and they are the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn. I love them so much I bought two more pair and even wear them off the course.I previously had to pair of Ecco’s and I my feet hurt so much after 18 holes, that I had trouble walking for days.Half the price of Ecco’s and like walking on air along with what feels like a foot massage.Great shoes Puma, keep the good work and can’t wait to see your new spikeless models.

I was a FOOTJOY PREMIER addict for years ,comfortable ,sturdy ,several widths OF which Large ,then they stopped making them And closed the factory in THE USA( A wrong décision .I would Still buy them if they had doubled the price !)
I switched to the FOOTJOY DNA ,which came on top in the GOLF SPY X testing ,And I like them ,except the front cleat which protrudes Outwards for nô reason ( Doesn’t give more stability ).
They are light And comfortable ,And also enduring .I play around 150 games 18 holes per year ,And it’s the second full year I have them :they are not at all worn out ,not Even need changing the cleats .!!!
      Very good job FOOTJOY !

Bought a pair of Ecco Biom for €250 . Before you go listening to these people rabbiting on about Ecco being great remember they don’t do half sizes and as most of us walk into a shop , put on the shoes and walk up and down the floor before deciding the shoes fit ( no assistance from the teenage pimply staff ), you will probably end up with an expensive pair of shoes that cut the heels off you and the shop will not take them back because there is nothing wrong with them ( except they are a half size too big ). Ecco sucks.

Most comfortable shoes I’ve worn are ECCO BIOM Hydromax. They were the best fitting shoe for me. I personally think, especially with golf, it’s all about personal preference. It should be for consumers as golf is not a one size fits all sport.

Good looking shoes, Puma but I agree with Tim, we need Wide size. Puma?? What about spikeless, which is today’s market?? For some reasons, many companies like Puma, Callaway and Ecco just refused to make any wide size golf shoes like FootJoy and others. Why?

I am troubled by the advent of overly aggressive tread by many shoe manufacturers. Indeed, I believe that some courses wee trying to ban at least one Adidas model several years ago. I recently played in an outing and the greens were so scuffed that you would have thought that someone had intentionally vandalized them. I am interested in reading your opinion regarding the Puma’ sole design.

I truly believe that we (as a golfing community) need to move awa y from aggressive cleat and tread patterns. Lots of guys at my club play with these shoes, and the completely demolish green surfaces! i know its against the rules, but I find myself constantly tamping down green surfaces because I refuse to accept that I have to suffer in scoring because some asshole(s) are to inconsiderate to take care of green surfaces after they have walked on them with their shoes that have aggressive cleat patterns.

Thank you for your question. It is really all about transparency for consumers. The current situation is that brands obtain the regulations they lobby for and consumers are left in the dark, as to how their products are made and what they are made from. I would like all brands to list the chemicals they use and their classifications to enable consumers to make purchasing decisions based upon ‘real’ information. I was hoping MyGolf Spy would also be interested in how these products are made; factory conditions, pay and also what they are made from. Transparency is all I am asking for.

I have one pair, and it’s exactly how you have described them, same goes for the regular sneakers I have owned of theirs.. With that being said, I’m going to find it difficult to drop around $200 on a pair of golf shoes, much less on a pair from a brand that has shown me “they totally sucked.” I’m not on tour and that is a huge sticker price.

They leave me sore (I walk).
I’ll consider them again based on your review but shoes need to cover all bases I expect allot.
      Water proof.
      All day comfort. Traction. Etc.
      Thx for review.

I haven’t owned anything but Puma shoes for a while. I would say that the ones I have now are at least four or five years old and are extremely comfortable and durable. The TITANTOUR sat really low in the heel and mine kept slipping out. I hope that is fixed with this new generation. Even a couple of centimeters would be great!
