When we visited with Parson Xtreme Golf earlier this year, the company’s R&D team had just finished the 0311 and was already working on a new PXG iron specifically designed for better players. The 0311T prototypes (originally labeled 0302) we saw suggested it probably wouldn’t be long before the company released something more akin to a true blade.
It’s kind of a necessity.
If your golf business is serious about succeeding on tour, you need a legitimate tour iron – not just for your current staff, but also as enticement (bait) for any other tour-level talent that might be kicking the tires on a potential PXG staff deal.
Now is probably a good time to remind you that PXG isn’t some boutique lifestyle brand. It’s serious about performance, and it’s serious about measuring its success at the highest level. That means the PGA Tour staff will inevitably grow.
Ryan and Rocco are just the beginning.
Exactly What You’d Expect
Of course, there’s not much that’s particularly surprising about how PXG describes the 0311T either. Compared to the standard 0311, the Tour model has a narrower sole, thinner topline, less offset, and is generally more compact.
You guys know the drill…the sum total of those changes equals a more traditional look that offers a more penetrating, lower-spinning trajectory, and plenty of that nebulous workability that golf companies love to tout anytime MOI dips. Fortunately for fans of the PXG’s signature look, you don’t have to sacrifice so much as a single one of the signature tungsten alloy weights (the screws) should you decide the 0311T is right for you.
Do You Have the Skill?
Following up on that motorcycle vs. race car analogy at the top of the story, PXG’s founder Bob Parsons adds, “…both deliver an exciting ride, but one requires a bit more skill. More can go wrong on two wheels, but if you have what it takes takes to control a motorcycle it will out perform the sports car in every instance.”
So while the 0311T is the motorcycle in our story, the design isn’t reckless. There is still some forgiveness baked into the 0311T. Perhaps the most interesting thing about PXG’s take on a blade is that the 0311T doesn’t use traditional solid body construction. Like the standard 0311 irons, the 0311T features PXG’s proprietary TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) filled cavity, which supports what PXG believes is the thinnest iron face in golf.
Speaking as a guy who has had the 0311s in the bag all season, the thought of replacing my short irons with 0311Ts is particularly appealing. I suspect I won’t be the only PXG player who will immediately consider transitioning to a combo set.
Pricing & Availability
The new irons are available in what’s being described as limited quantities. The retail price for the 0311T is $350 per club, $50 more than the standard model.
PXG’s tour irons can be ordered directly through Parsons Xtreme Golf. For more information or to be added to the waiting list for purchase call 844.PLAY.PXG or visit www.PXG.com.
