They Got “THE Look!”

From the first second I laid eyes on my 1st Solus wedge I fell in love. They just had that look…the kinda look that you just know they will be a great feeling well balanced wedge when you do get your hands on them. And I was right…their first release was awesome…I actually got my hands on them a few years ago when they first came out and should have put them in the bag then. But it seems all I get to do is test clubs…so nothing stays around too long.

But when we heard through the grapevine that a new Solus wedge was being worked on behind the scenes we decided to reach out ourselves to the company to see if we could get a sample to try out for you guys (well us too ;) shhhh don’t tell them). And when we heard we were the first people in the world to get to try these we got super excited…they had not even been sent to the guys on tour yet.

The “New” Solus 7.1 Tour Satin Wedge

If your not familiar with the Solus wedge you might be familiar with the grind on the sole that has been so heavily copied by one name brand after another since it’s release. The whole design is pretty ingenious from a design stand point in my opinion. Not just because the sole but for many reasons. I say this…because a well balanced design that is also functional is not as easy as it looks to achieve. When you change one aspect of a design it can throw off the entire design. So your tweaking of one minor aspect of the design could make the CG entirely off which means your head is worthless. Although in this design it is one of the rare occasions where you find yourself looking at a club as if it were a piece of art. They truly put all the pieces of a complex puzzle together that is not only sleek and effective but also one that induces confidence when you step over the ball. A rare find indeed!

They have given all kinds of great opportunities for all kinds of golfers with this design and were able to incorporate so many great features all at the same time. Like different bounce points for different type shots and different type golfers. Also great perimeter weighting which is sometimes all but forgotten about when looking at wedge designs. It gives it a great balance that you just dont get from many of the competitiors. The wedge gives you incredible spin rates from all over the place…even for guys that have trouble spinning the ball. The reduced offset is a key for me as well. So many of the wedges have too much offset which triggers an auto-reject response when I address a ball. And if you have any troubles getting it out of a bunker you will fall in love with the Solus 7.1 Tour Satin.

ROBOT TESTING RESULTS

ANd as you can see they didn’t perform too shabby in robot testing as well. Independent Robot Testing conducted by Golf Laboratories of San Diego, CA tested the Solus 56-degree Utility Wedge against the 56-degree Cleveland TA-900 and the Titleist-Vokey 256-14. These tests yielded the following results:

  • The Solus wedges proved to be 3 times more accurate
  • The Solus wedges hit the ball 10% longer
  • The Solus wedges generated 5-10% higher ball spin rates

Overall Score= 98 (A+)

Not much I could say bad about the wedge other then they dug in a little bit easily for me on long fairway shots but I figured out how to adjust quickly. Other then that the wedge is a dream to look at with soft satin lines that produce no glare and a give you wealth of confidence at address. For a cast wedge it felt as soft as my forged Mizuno irons which was a major
surprise. They were versatile and really stood out in the bunkers. And the balance of the wedges is top notch…there really are not many wedges better of the rack then this wedge here.

I have been wondering about Solus. They were a brand that I saw very often, but as of late I haven’t seen or heard much out of them. They make a quality wedge though. A buddy of mine plays Solus and I love his wedges. Solus is one of the brands I will consider when I switch wedges.
