EXCLUSIVE – TaylorMade R9 Driver!

taylormade r9

TAYLORMADE R9 DRIVER & R9 FAIRWAY WOODS are now currently available at GolfDiscount.com

You Heard It At MyGolfSpy First!

The biggest rumor in golf for the past 3 seasons at least equipment wise…is whether or not TaylorMade Golf will be coming out with a R9 driver for 2009. We get at least 15 emails a day asking both what it will look like and when it will be coming out. Then their is another 10-15 daily emails from golfers swearing that they know that TM is absolutely not for one reason or another. Well for all of those that think TaylorMade had never even thought of coming out with a R9 driver…you will be disappointed…because the rumors ARE CONFIRMED…there WILL be a Taylormade R9 Driver for 2009. You heard it here first…TaylorMade will have a R9 driver for 2009.

** Expect to see them in stores around March. But of course we will have pictures much sooner then that for you **

The print ads below were done by a gentleman who was paid by TaylorMade Golf’s Ad Agency. I am sure many of you are saying…’wow…that sure looks a lot like the R7 Limited’ and you would be right. This will not be the Taylormade R9 Driver for 2009…but it does look veryyy close to the artwork below. We will have more pictures of the real head soon. (UPDATE: New Picture at bottom of article)

P.S.

They do own a trademark for the term R11 as well guys…so be looking for that about 3 months after this one launches…you know TaylorMade and their driver releases. Hope this keeps you going through the holidays. We will have more info for you soon. (UPDATE: New Picture at bottom of article)

hey great article. funnny thing though is the PRIORITY DESIGNS link (OUR WORK) on the front page links to the article about TAYLORMADE with picture of either a CALLAWAY or WILSON golf ball. and also they do work for ORLIMAR and when clicking on the link lead to TAYLORMADE graphic designs. thought you guys might find this nonsense somewhat amusing. peace

JUST TYPICAL OF TM. YOU THINK YOU HAVE JUST GOT THAT NEW DRIVER, FRESH IN THE BAG AND WHAM. A NEW ONE STRAIGHT OUT THERE AND YOU LOSE 150 WHEN YOU PART EX IT IN COS ANOTHER MODEL IS OUT.

I hear you, I bet it will cost $499.00, At Christmas $300.00, next summer $200.00, following Christmas $149.99. I have been down this road. I’m the kind of guy that will go out now and buy that club you just bought, but I am sorry, mine will be half the price you just paid!

I will just tell anyone the best thing to do is just go get yourself fitted for a driver and just stick with it. Just got fitted with a new driver called the Nakashima and it has giving me 45 more yards over the R7 that i was hitting. And yes that is not good that they came out with a new driver after you just purchase the latest model last year.

rumour has it its movable weight and movable head (like the dymo) giving 75 yards left to right adjustability!!!!!
And a very sexy white fujikura shaft…..mmmmmmmm not had a taylor since the 425 so looking forward to using this

Reply

mygolfspy January 13, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Does that count snap hooks and banana slices?

Reply

Casey Walton January 22, 2009 at 2:55 pm

It also has a removable shaft so you can adjust spin at launch angle.

Reply

mark January 23, 2009 at 4:42 pm

it looks like the r7 limited. removable shaft is probably to compete with the newest cobra l5v driver. TM always has to be the best

Reply

Layton January 25, 2009 at 10:33 pm

It just looks like a plain old driver with a couple of weights

Reply

mygolfspy January 26, 2009 at 10:45 am

Actually it is not like the other Taylormade heads with JUST weight adjustability…it has many other ways of being adjusted.

Reply

Juansky January 26, 2009 at 7:25 pm

How about adjusting that wretched swing, never mind the driver. The driver is just a tool, who cares about the paint job or design, you still have to know HOW to hit it straight. But if you want the latest model, enjoy!

Reply

WillR January 27, 2009 at 3:15 am

is it just me or has the designs for Taylormade drivers lately went downhill since the Superquad? the TP TourBurner looks and sit not too bad but from then on the new drivers just look … well rubbish!

Reply

Ken January 27, 2009 at 4:26 am

My thoughts on R9 are as follows:

a) the incremental technological enhancements are not substantial – how much more in terms of performance can TM add if they are launching a new driver every 6 months to stay within conforming specs?
b) with TM products, one should always time an upgrade one year from new launch as prices would have fallen by 50%.

Reply

jason January 28, 2009 at 6:56 am

Hmmm One thing of interest to me is the ability to adjust lie, you can now use different lenght shafts with a MWT head! Now we can bring the 50″ long shaft for the 500yrd drives and bring the 42″ short shaft on those windy days. And have the side to side to play with to boot! could be a interesting stick! Now if i could only hit it consistently all of that would actually matter LOL

Reply

Ray March 5, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Trust me Taylormades cost is under $10.00 per club, it’s called volume and supply. They still make $150.00 or more on you. You get the pay what we pay deal like Ford & GM. They make there own Heads and buy thousands of shafts & grips.

So happy the R9 is here!!!! It allowed me to get a new 07 Burner for half the price. I just hope the R9 does not make the overbooked course I play at slow down even more due to the hacker in front adjusting his “driver” instead of his swing. It is a fine line between playing in a good beer zone and playing sloppy drunk.

Hi Fellow Golfers

I love golf and love Taylormade Products and recently bought the R7 Limited AND for me it is by far the best driver I have ever used and I have tried many over the years, but again it comes down to personal choice. The new R9 looks awesome but will it deliver to most amateurs what they desire, maybe and maybe not, it is an individual choice but I do suggest you go to the range and try out before dipping into your pockets. Now that I have the driver I feel comfortable with I will stay with it along with the new R7 Forged Irons I bought late last year which I may also add have added more consistancy to my game as I concentrate harder due to the smaller sweet spot and I actually hit longer with these Irons than I ever did with previous cavity Irons.

Enjoy your golf, score well and if you like the R9 then buy it and hopefully it will offer you many hours of pleasure. I would however like to finish off by saying this, All the golf manufacturers have done an amazing job over the years with their equipment as now many, many golfers have the opportunity of bringing down their scores and, let us be honest without the Amateur Golfers playing and buying our beautiful game would not have come so far over the years.

A Proud Golfer …………. Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts.

Does anyone know if the shaft on the R9 will be removable and if so does Taylormade intend on coming out with a line of different shafts like the Callaway iMix systems of last year.

Hey Guys!
I had the luxury of hitting the new R9 today and all I can say is .WOW!
I always thought that the Taylormade drivers were OVERhyped! But this own lives up to its reputation! It may not be as good looking as the past drivers, but it works well! Taylormade drivers seemed hard faced in the past (one needed to hit really hard to get it up in the air) but this one goes off like a rocket! It sounds good aswell, not like them Callaways!!!!
The new re-shafting system works quite well!!! You have R (right),L (left) N (neutral) and NU (neutral Upright), Most seemed true to their name when set! But I noticed that the NU went a tad shorter than the others! But on the whole it was a good driver!!!!
Im giving up my Nike 5000 for this thing!!

Reply

AceGolfer February 24, 2009 at 6:44 am

wicked looking driver…however the smaller head..does that mean a loss of distance? probably not as Taylormade wouldnt make a driver if it wasnt a beast distance-wise

Costly R9! Will wait for the next..

Reply

Jay March 8, 2009 at 7:31 am

As a famous golfer once said, its not the arrow its the Indian!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hear tyhat the R9 with the smaller head is going to have a larger head design R9 soon to come that will be even longer! This will never stop, I play the R7 Draw and have had it go 75 yards left 75 yards right actually maybe more and this club is 2 years old! Like others have pointed out, work on your swing there are a hundred aqcceptable titanium drivers out there including the ones that sell for $149.95 like the R7, Burner draws etc….. If you are a touring pro would you really have a driver that is adjustable or would you get fitted to your grooved swing with weights, shafts, lie etc… epoxied in place so you don’t have a failure like a broken, stripped screw in component in the middle of a 10 million dollar tournament! Just a thought, do these pros really have one of those clubs and a wrench in their bag to adjust it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply

mygolfspy March 9, 2009 at 9:48 am

Yes there is an R9 Max which is being launched in Japan first…and from what we have heard it will be coming to US too.

Reply

Jay March 9, 2009 at 10:16 am

I did notice that in Europe they offer Cavity Back Forged Irons that aren’t available in the US. SO thats a good way to check and see how the next driver of the R9 family will come!

What is the difference between the R-9 and R-9 TP ?

Reply

Steve March 26, 2009 at 2:23 pm

According to Taylormade, same head, and there’s no difference except the TP comes with an ever so slightly better and heavier shaft, and a much inflated price tag, of course.

I’ve just bought an R9, it looks good, and it plays good, so go out and get yourself one.

The head is stable, and the adjustable face angle mechanism (what they call “FCT”) really works. Just go with a slightly lower lofted model cause it luanches the ball rather high.

Incidently, I bought an R9 3-wood also, but I struggle to generate a high enough ball flight with it. In fact the 3-wood has a much lower ball flight than the driver. Strange.

i think taylormade cut some corners with this one. it looks like they are trying to trick everyone into buying the r9 and spending that extra 200 dollars instead of buying the r7 limited .when in all trueness they are the same club except for the shaft.would i buy this club ? No way. will i ever play a taylormade driver?no. i’ll stick with my cleveland.

It might look like the Limited but it is nothing like the Limited. A totally different driver Dunphy.

Bought my R-9 today, 12 Months w/no interest. Sounds like I’m taking a mortgage out for 1 Golf Club. Had to sell the wife on the idea, Traded in 2 other Drivers to bring the price down, so for about $21.00 a month, See said “go for it” Looking forward to hitting the range tomorrrow and experimenting with the weights and the different angles of the head.

Reply

Lawrence David March 28, 2009 at 5:30 am

Heading to the range this morning. bought my R-9 last night – Had to finance the thing – 12 months no interest, also traded in 2 older drivers, received $100.00 off. so for about $22.00 per month. Plus if Sergio wins the Masters -”It’s Free” come on Sergio, just don’t spit into any of the Cups on the greens….

So I tested the R9, Nike Dynmo and Callaway Diablo the other day at Golf Galaxy (rainy day so that’s where I go to hit balls). Anyway, I like the R9 and granted it was the standard shaft for all clubs and was hitting a E7 Bridgestone golf ball (which I don’t normally hit), and the results…dah dudu dah….Diablo was more carry on average – 273 – and had less spin off the club face. The only draw back (most like due to my swing) is there is about 5-10 yard fade with the Diable where the R9 and Dynamo both had straight or 5-10 draw characteristics. Now I did not do any adjustments to either the TM or Nike, I left them both neutral. I already have about 270 carry with my Burner so I didn’t buy a new driver…I just thought this may be helpful to others interested. I would suggest hitting the others as well…It really comes down to comfort and look though if you are hitting them all the same.

Another great driver from Taylormade. What can you say, the line has become the adjustable driver that can be made to fit any nuance of your swing. Great concept, keep em’ coming!

Reply

Luke April 19, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Is there any difference between the r7 limited and the r9 besides the adjustable shaft? if there aren’t any, than Taylormade’s quick arrival of the r9 may not be that bad after all because it just pushed down the r7 limited’s price to $200 (that’s a $200 price drop in 4 months!). The best approach would probably be to wait at least a couple of months to buy the driver that you want (however hard it may be), because it’s bound to come down in price soon.

mygolfspy April 20, 2009 at 6:21 am

Hey Luke – thanks so much for your 1st comment on MyGolfSpy! In regards to the head differences…they are many. The only real similarity is in shape and even that is not that much alike.

Friend of mine just picked one up last week – We played a couple days ago and its not a bad driver.
Question – he’s thinking of either a Fubuki or Motore (r) for it.
Anyone here have an opinion on either ?
