LIVE! – TaylorMade’s 2014 Product Launch Event

** We’ll be updating this feed constantly with pictures, info, and anything else  we think you might find, interesting.

At 7:30 AM Pacific Time this morning I’ll be hopping aboard a charter jet bound for Las Vegas.

A quick side note…charter jets to Vegas are becoming trendy in the golf industry.

A small number of us super-important (my classification, likely nobody else’s) media types are on-hand to check out what’s being described as TaylorMade’s latest product innovation.

Fortunately, we’re not being embargoed this time around so I’ll be able to share pictures of the new product along with images from inside the new TaylorMade Golf Experience; TaylorMade’s first retail location (which as it turns out used to be a Callaway retail location).

After a tour of the new digs we’ll head out to the range for what TaylorMade is bravely calling a “new product validation experience”. While we haven’t actually validated anything at this point, I’ll concede this much;

With TaylorMade it’s always an experience.

After a quick lunch we’ll be heading out…I suppose to…further validate the new product over a round of golf at the Wynn. Check back often, and be sure to let us know what you think of what you see.

See the TM whipping boys are out in force, you know the easy option is so simple if these regular releases annoy you don’t buy them and if you choose to do that then don’t comment on them
      It’s really that simple

I have now received both the $119 3wood and the $144 driver. One purchased from the Carlsbad Golf Center in San Diego and the other from theGolfHabit — both authorized TM vendors. Both are new in plastic, real and their serials confirmed with TMag. So much for paying full retail MSRP.

I haven’t hit either yet, it’s too cold up here in Utah. The 3 wood is small and looks very normal, attractive and hittable. I expect very few surprises or very many differences from my RBZ Stage 2, to be honest.

The driver is much larger than I expected. The biggest head I’ve ever seen, much larger than an SLDR or my Optiforce. I like the matte black paint and it is clean looking, but I don’t get the alignment graphics on the top. They seem asymmetrical to me. Since I kept my preferred Fujikura shaft with its SLDR tip from my last round of tests, I’m ready to go hit it as soon as I can get Flightscope time or it thaws out up here..

I’m sure no one is still following this old thread, but I’ve FINALLY had a chance to hit my $114 Jetspeed 3wood and $144 driver on a range side by side with my current gamers. You know what, they ain’t all that bad.

I don’t have distance or spin numbers for either yet, but my feeling was that while the clubs were good, they probably weren’t any longer than my current favorites (Rbz Stage 2 and Optiforce 460). Forgiveness was good, launch was good, dispersion was fine, feel and sound were both good. I was not unhappy, but I’ll have to see how well they do on a real course or a monitor before I pass final judgement. Sometimes these dead-spinning TMag products can roll out farther than you think. I thought the 3 wood launched a little low and it didn’t feel very long, but the driver launched fine at a stock, neutral 10.5 setting. This was the first TMag driver I’ve ever hit that I didn’t fight a big open-faced fade out of the box.

I have not yet experimented with the low face hits and the speedslot. In theory I should be able to move the ball forward in my stance, tee it up, get a positive AoA and have that dead spin scream on a low face it. We’ll see. I can say that I liked them enough to test further, they passed the first cut. Many metal woods that I try get tossed out after 10 swings.

My final post on the Jetspeeds —

After another couple of range sessions, I decided to resell the 3HL fairway wood after I determined that it was a fine solid club, but it did not launch any higher or go any farther than my current RBZ 2. It’s practically new, no blemishes, and listed on Ebay for just $79 with NO TAKERS so far. I paid $114 for it and most other auctions are in the $140 range and they don’t seem to have any takers either. Make of that info what you will.

The Jetspeed driver was competitive enough with my current gamer that I decided to take.it for a spin on the course, hitting two drives every hole for 18. You know what — it was equal to, if not slightly better than my current gamer! This surprised me because the JS drives didn’t feel or sound all that flush. But it was a wettish day and I think the lower spin and enhanced roll-out of the JS allowed it to keep up.

THEN I BROKE IT ON THE 15TH TEE. Not the shaft, not the hosel, SOMETHING METAL BROKE OFF AND IS LOOSE RATTLING INSIDE THE BELL. So any praise I might have been building for the JS went right in the crapper. Clearly a driver should not break after two range sessions and 12 odd drives! Now I have to send it in to TMag and see what they’ll do about it, if anything. Take that for what it’s worth too.

More like experienced. I’ve been buying and selling clubs on Ebay for 15 years and I verify everything I buy.

Yes, I have been ripped off on occasion, so I’m not immune from the hazards. But I also know that Ebay is the four-letter word of the golf industry. They do not want you to know that you can get huge discounts on genuine stuff. They also have net shills that are very active protecting their image in these forums by attacking any point of view they don’t like.

Another thing they don’t want you to know is that a great deal of the stuff being dumped on ebay are actually retailer BUY-BACKS — overstock clubs that the manufacturers take back from the pro shops after they do not move. Some manufacturers are more agreeable to this practice than others, just ask any pro. After buy-back, the manufacturer stamps a buy-back symbol on them like “ARP”, then it unloads them to big net retailers like “Mondialgolf” and “4balls”, who in turn sell them for whatever they can get. Real clubs, dirt cheap.

Back to the subject of the test Jetspeed 3 wood I bought, I has arrived from Carlsbad in just 3 days, but my jury is still out on its authenticity.

When inspecting any club for authenticity, the first thing you do is look for anomalies and this club has a couple. It arrived in a non-Taylormade box, inside the sealed TMag plastic sleeve. The sleeve should have a number of stamped labels on it, and it does, but one of them had a cheaply printed over-label reading “Serial #*********” stuck on top of another higher quality label underneath. The label underneath (which can still be read) also has a serial number on it that matches the SN on the hosel. I don’t know what the cheap over-label is supposedly verifying but it looks suspicious to my eye.

Meanwhile, a second paper label on the bag bears a number which matches the shaft label. Again, easy to fake, but hard to get the numbers to match in TMag’s computer. Fit and finish is decent for a TMag club (which aren’t the highest quality clubs to begin with). Grip looks correct, but is somewhat slick (not the best sign). The headcover is still in its sealed bag, but it also looks decent and well made (A good sign — many fakes are sold without headcovers, which cost a few bucks to make well and only eat into a counterfeiters’ profit margin.)

The micro-etched serial number on the hosel is somewhat skewed, but these tiny numbers are so small these days that this isn’t necessarily a sign of fakery. Since I bought this 3 wood in an unusual configuration of shaft and loft, it’s unlikely to be one the counterfeiters would want to fake because unusual clubs are harder to move. Consultation of this SN with TMag should indicate a correspondence between unusual shaft and unusual head, and if not it’s fake.

Next step is to talk to TMag on the phone tomorrow and to take the club and bags into our biggest local retailer for comparison and inspection and see what they say. If there is still doubt, I send it to TMag.

And on a final note, I just bought a new Jetspeed driver from another Ebay retailer for $144, the lowest price I’ve seen yet. I’ll be sure to check it out for authenticity as well. Since supply is going up and demand seems to be sated over the holidays, price has no choice but to go down. Word up, if you ever want to BUY something super cheap on Ebay, look for stuff that can’t arrive in time for Xmas. The pickings will be good for the next 8-10 days.

Oh, don’t worry about me. If it’s fake, I get my money back thru Ebay’s buyer protection program. If it’s real and I don’t like it, I’ll sell it again on Ebay, hoping that I’m wrong about the price collapse and I’ll get most of my money back. If I do like it, then I’ve found a keeper at half off, haven’t I?

I’m not going to pass judgment an the quality of the Jetspeed because I haven’t hit it yet. How could I have? It has only been on the market about 10 days.

But I can tell you that based on what I am already seeing in on-line sales, it’s either a dud, or those in the know fear getting stuck with overstock because the dumping has already started.

Over the weekend several big, reputable Ebay retailers fire-saled dozens of new Jetspeed drivers and fairway woods with no reserve auctions. Brand new drivers sold for $150-$200, 3 woods for $85-$115 on average.

      Where to start…

First, the JetSpeed’s retail date was 12/13. So not 10 days..less than 4.

As for “several” reputable sellers…the low ball prices that I see (completed listings) are basically all from a single dealer in NY. Reputable? Maybe, but it’s one guy. Nearly everything else being sold is going for exactly what you’d expect from a similar offering from anybody else. Cheaper than retail, yes, but hardly at blowout prices.

It’s easy to look at 1 or 2 examples and declare a pattern, but it doesn’t make it fact.

I hate to disagree with Mr. Covey, but I will on some points.

I apologize for thinking that the Jetspeed started selling sooner. Ebay has had offerings for the club going back several weeks.

However, I maintain that if you see DOZENS of no reserve, $0.01 opening bid auctions on the first weekend of a product’s release, it’s telling you something. Likewise, if you see those auctions all close at relatively low prices, with no one willing to go higher, it also tells you something.

I agree with Mr. Covey that many ebay offerings are posted at high nominally-retail prices. Unfortunately, most Ebay shoppers know that those high offerings never actually move. They are just billboards that sit and sit. The important transactions, the ones that actually determine value, are the completed sales.

Mr. Covey is correct on another point — ALL the completed auctions from this weekend (Dec 14 to 16) went to just two domestic sellers. Both are reputable ebay merchants. Both were offering NEW drivers, most with FREE SHIPPING. I’m sorry that no one wanted to pay higher prices to other people, but that’s just capitalism.

Over the weekend, I saw 43 Jetspeed fairway woods (retail of $229) sell between $84 and $148 with an average of $120 (52% of list). Likewise I saw 13 Jetspeed drivers ($299 retail) sell between $150 and $210 for an average of $191 (63% of list). Hardly one or two examples and hardly an insignificant discount.

What does this mean? Is it a fluke? Are you kicking yourself for not getting one? Should we cry “sour grapes” and hope they’re all counterfeit? You choose. In statistics you need a sample size of 40 before you can start seeing patterns. I counted 56 units over the first weekend of the release and I got concerned. I think that the willingness of some sellers to dump and some buyers not to want to pay much means SOMETHING, but I’m more than happy to consider other data points. Perhaps some retailers working the floor at Dick’s or Edwin Watts will tell us how the Christmas buying season went with regards to Jetspeed.

Just to update those few Jetspeed fans that may be following this thread, I have continued to follow and bid on dozens more new Jetspeed drivers, fairway woods and rescues that have been posted on Ebay in the 2 days since I first noticed what I thought was club dumping. Today I lost out on another driver at $185 and a 3 wood at $105. A 4th reputable seller in Carlsbad, an authorized Taylormade retailer, entered the fray today offering Buy-it-now 3 woods with Free shipping for $119.

If that is not dumping, what is it?

      markb

Just bought one of those new $119 3 woods, no tax, no shipping. That’s 48% of what I would have paid here locally. Within 1 week of release. From an authorized seller with whom I have done business before.

What does this mean? I think it may augur a 2014 collapse of retail price structures for those manufacturers who have become addicted to an accelerated and frequent product release schedule. I’m just reading tea leaves here, feel free to disagree.

For those who are hoping that the club is counterfeit, letme promise here and now that I will send it to TMag for verification and share their report in this forum.

So nothing in White from TM now… Just a Wilson Driver with Callaway colours and now a speed slot driver in Callaway colours they said they would never make.

Lynn, a great, and fair question. I think there’s probably some misconceptions about how these trips run (each company does it a little bit differently). I’m actually planning on writing an article about these sort of events when I get back from the next one (I leave on Tuesday).

The easy answer to your question is that they don’t impact our reviews at all. The beauty of our review system is that it’s all data driven. We hit the clubs and the numbers are what they are. Worth adding is that I’m the only MGS staff member who participates. The other guys aren’t on staff, and really aren’t too interested in the outcome. In a bigger review I’m 1 of 6 guys to hit the clubs (and eventually we hope to grow that number to 10). Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t significantly skew the results.

More to what I think is the meat of your question, what I’ve found is that actually spending some time with the people at the golf companies, whether it’s TaylorMade, Callaway, Cobra, or Nike, has actually given me more freedom to write the stories I want to write, and say exactly what I want to say. Sometimes it’s positive, sometimes it’s not.

If you don’t know me and I write something negative about your company your tendency will likely be to see me as just some jackass with an axe to grind. As they’ve gotten to know me, and understand where I’m coming form and what MyGolfSpy is all about, most have come to understand that nothing is personal, and that I don’t write anything without putting some real thought into it. Most have developed thicker skins, and have shown more of a willingness to work with us (send us product for review, give us access to their people, etc.).

I’ll touch on this more in the article, but the private jet thing…totally over the top, but the thing is, I know it, every other media guy that was on the plane with me knows, and TaylorMade knows it too. While it’s important to TaylorMade that we all have a good time, I don’t think anybody involved in the planning of the event had the mindset of “Let’s rent a private jet and then they’ll say nothing but good things about us”. It’s not that sinister. It’s more along the lines of, “you know what would be fun…let’s launch JetSpeed on a Jet”. Again…it’s comical, but it’s fun…and TaylorMade (and everyone else on the plane) is aware of it.

And yes…I believe rockets are faster than jets, and they launch higher too. I’d need to check the respective spin rates, but I think they probably launched in the wrong order.

I severely doubt that these guided tours and somewhat exclusive events do not impact your reviews. All you guys do is praise TM for everything they do. I get that they are making clubs for the guy who didn’t get the latest one but releasing a new club every 2-5 months is completely ridiculous. This turns away new golfers who don’t want to believe that their brand new expensive driver is now bargain bin crap. I hope people wake up and see that not all of their equipment is worth the price.

      Tony Covey

I think if you went back through the history of our articles – even recent history, an objective look would reveal a balanced approach to our TaylorMade coverage. The fact that we get near equal parts “you guys sold out to TaylorMade” and “you guys are just TaylorMade haters” on nearly every article we produce that mentions TaylorMade is suggestive of the fact we are balanced. My question for you is, do you really want balance, or do just want to read somebody who simply takes a dump all over the industry. That’s far from balanced.

Sometimes I like what they’re doing. Sometimes I don’t. What I will say is that no matter how much gear is produced or whose producing it (factually speaking, TaylorMade does not release more new gear than anyone else. At least two other companies have released more over the last several years); covering new equipment is what we do, so quite frankly, the more that’s released, the better.

The next time I hear a golfer say I quit because there was too much new equipment will be the first. That’s generally something that comes from the traditionalists…the guys who think they speak for everyone, but assuredly don’t. The same is largely true with the argument that new gear is “ruining golf”. We hear that quite often too, but what we’ve never heard is a concrete explanation for exactly how a selection of new drivers can destroy a game with over a century of tradition.

Finally, regarding our reviews…we’re 100% data-driven in our review process. No matter what TaylorMade, or Nike, or Cobra, or Callaway, or Wilson (or anyone else that has or will host us again) says or does during one of our trips, their words can’t make me hit their clubs any better, and they certainly can’t make the other 2-5 (depending on what’s being tested) guys who take part in our tests (and who don’t go on trips) hit their clubs any better either.

It doesn’t really matter what I think, it’s 100% about performance.
