Spend $800 on this TaylorMade Driver, because America

Spend $800 on this TaylorMade Driver, because America
Personalized distance and forgiveness takes on a new, patriotic look…

More than a month too late for the U.S. Open, 3 weeks too late for the 4th of July, but just in time for the Olympics, the Ryder Cup, the DNC, the impending (and imposing) election, and whatever other flag-waving occasion that happens to pop up, TaylorMade has just announced perhaps the least specific limited edition golf product in recent memory.

And they say timing is everything.

WZ608_zoom_D

Because America (in a most general sort of way), behold the M1 Special Edition Driver in all of its red, white, and blue, star-spangled glory.

It can be yours for the low price of just $799.99.

“Available for a limited time, the M1 Special Edition Driver features a stunning blue carbon composite crown, red loft sleeve, and an American flag icon on the toe. Further accentuated by a chrome face and a T-track that includes blue and red sliding weights, the M1 Special Edition Driver makes a powerful statement for any golfer, in both looks and performance.”

This driver screams America! as much as any made in China and likely assembled in Mexico product possibly can. But if you don’t find yourself chanting USA, USA, USA yet, no worries, there’s more manufactured patriotism where that came from.

WZ608_zoom_D2

“Additionally, the driver comes stock with premium componentry, including a Z-Grip Patriot grip from Golf Pride, a special edition Fujikura Speeder Evolution TS 661 shaft, and a red, white, and blue TaylorMade head cover crafted from premium leather”

Seriously. TaylorMade just used the world componentry, and I don’t think it was smiling, like I am right now, when it did.

M1patriotDriverSpecSheet

Now in fairness, I’ve been nothing if not consistent in my praise of limited edition product. I love the uniqueness (or at least implied uniqueness), and I can certainly appreciate the need for a golf company to keep its product lines looking fresh in what is damn close to a commodities market. Those feelings certainly apply here.

It should also go without saying that given its 1st place finish in our Most Wanted Driver test (which we’d playfully describe as #DoM1nant), we’re also big fans of the M1’s performance.

And let’s be honest people, given all the moaning and groaning some of you do about TaylorMade releasing new drivers every 6 weeks (a total fallacy, but it persists nonetheless), isn’t a Special Edition driver, no matter the cost, preferable to an actual new model?

WZ608_zoom_D3-narrow

When you consider alternatives to this release, the Un-Official Driver of America is among the least egregious of possibilities.

So yeah, I like the driver just fine, even if the price tag is absurd.

The Wrong Product at the Wrong Time

The reality is that, as we’ve discussed, the equipment market is performing below expectations this summer. A lack of discounted product availability, along with what sure looks like consumer fatigue, has the golf companies feeling a bit of a pinch. Cobra and Callaway have responded by dropping prices on some lines. TaylorMade appears to be taking a different approach.

WZ608_zoom_D5

While this release certainly borders on pandering, I’d also be remiss not to point out that TaylorMade was at its best when it did things differently than its competitors.

That said, the Special Edition Driver, cool as the color scheme may be, looks more like a gratuitous money grab than it does any sort of innovative path forward.

I’v personally never owned a Taylormade product. I was convinced years ago their products were inferior when I looked at the innards of Taylormade versus a Ping product. This being said the only products I will own are anything but Taylormade. I might order a $40 driver from China but it won’t be a Taylormade. If I see some PSI irons for $20 on ebay, I won’t buy them because they are Taylormade. I am really surprised they won the most recent test for My Golf Spy and I’m not sure some money didn’t change hands somewhere, tell me Tony how much did TM pay MGS to set up that M1 scam. It’s a POS, I’ve demoed one and everyone is different. Quality ain’t job one there.

http://mygolfspy.com/titleist-c16-driver/ and titleist new driver with the same technology will sell at half the price of the limited edition c16 driver that retailed for $1000. At least TaylorMades limited edition driver comes almost a year after the M1 came to market. Yup and for all of you and your “Taylormade will release a new driver tomorrow BS comments.” The Pga championship is upon us this week let me know who won it last year and what diver was he using? How would you feel if you bought the c16 for a grand and then they came out with the same driver in their new 900 series driver for half the price. Also for you ignorant people this driver with this speeder shaft doesn’t sell $499 but much more with it’s “normal” paint job. Go to your nearest TaylorMade retailer and buy this driver with the speeder shaft and let me know what the retail is. Your almost as ignorant as the one who wrote this story up, but not quite!

Ironic that you would call me and another reader ignorant in a comment filled with a healthy dose of ignorance. Let’s run down the list, shall we?

The 917 series LOOKS like the C16, this is true. Beyond that, there are significant materials differences (different types of Ti) with different strength to weight ratios. Basically, those differences alter mass properties, and by extension performance. The C16 costs more because the materials that went into it cost more. Whether or not the resulting performance differences justify a significant price difference is open for debate, but it doesn’t change the fact that you’re talking about two distinctly different products at two distinctly different price points.

With the Special Edition M1, the product looks different from the standard M1, but from a performance perspective, it is 100% identical to the standard production model. We’re effectively talking about a $300 upcharge for paint – and nothing but paint, which I actually don’t have a problem with.

Regarding your assumptions about the shaft, the fact of the matter is that the Speeder EVO 661 TS is one of the NO CHARGE UPGRADE shafts already available for the standard M1. Seriously. I just configured one in my cart.

Let me spell it out: TaylorMade M1 (standard black/white crown edition) with Speeder EVO 661 TS $499.99. So…one more time…RETAIL with the Speeder EVO 661 TS is STILL $499.99. Honestly…it would have taken you 2 minutes to answer your own question.

This is as good a place as any to note that TaylorMade has done this in the past. Wasn’t that long ago they did a special SLDR with an Oban Tour Limited Shaft. The primary difference there…Oban does not do ‘stock’ in any lineup. To maintain the integrity of the product line, it doesn’t give significant volume discounts or sell watered down made-for variants. In that case, the driver needed to be $700+ because of the ACTUAL cost of the shaft. Fujikura has no such issues and frequently gives volume discounts to retail partners. Simply put, this driver does not need to be $800 to offset materials costs. It’s all about boosting margins (significantly) on a pre-existing product.

Granted this is a special version of the shaft (different graphics), so it’s up to the individual consumer to decide whether or not a new color scheme is worth significantly more money. To each his own in that regard.

But in terms of actual concrete facts, comparing the M1 to the M1 Special, we’re talking about two absolutely identical products (paint not withstanding) with a $300 price difference. I also don’t have a problem with this either.

As for your PGA Championship nonsense…I’ve been known to ask the OEMs this same question when they put up stats about victories, or top 10s, or OWGR rankings; (with respect to OWGR, for example), which of your staffers do you feel isn’t in the Top 10 if he played somebody else’s equipment? Nobody has ever had the stones to provide an answer.

So if we extend that out to your example, do you honestly believe Jason Day, who obliterated the field, doesn’t win the PGA Championship if he’s playing Callaway, Cobra, or Titleist or basically anybody else who makes gear every bit as good as TMaG’s, especially for guys who have the luxury of being fit to the nth degree for every club in their bag?

Let’s be clear about one important point, Jason Day doesn’t play TaylorMade because it performs better at the tour level, he plays TaylorMade because TaylorMade agreed to pay him more money than its competitors to do so. His contract is up at the end of this season…if TaylorMade continues to pay him more than anyone else he’ll continue to play TaylorMade. If somebody ponies up more he’ll play that manufacturers product. Either way he’s still going to be one of the best players in the world.

But again…I don’t have an issue with the price. I do think it’s a bit tone deaf to the market at large, but more than that, I find it absolutely absurd that a German-owned company that sources 100% of the materials that go into the driver (and the shaft and grip) from Asia, and then assembles its products in Mexico is trying to capitalize on flag-waving, false patriotism all in the name of America.

Seriously…it’s the lowest form of opportunism.

If you are going to charge $800 for one club, no matter how amazing it looks, we should have our choice of any shaft, any length, any grip, any swing weight. I appreciate their effort to keep it red white and blue top to bottom, but I’m not paying $800 just to need to pay more to make it playable, even if I had the money.
