The World’s First Crowdsourced Putter Design

The World’s First Crowdsourced Putter Design

The Goal: To create the world’s first crowdsourced putter design on MyGolfSpy.

We’re talking about a putter designed not by a major manufacturer, not some famous putter designer either. Instead we’re talking about a putter designed by you and produced for golfers. That was the idea I had a few years ago. Because of some legal foolisheness, it took longer for this idea to come to life, but now it finally has.

It used to be that consumers were more-or-less powerless. We had to take what products were offered to us; like when your mother used to say you’ll eat it and you’ll like it. Not here guys. MGS wants to empower and inspire you to design a product you can be proud to say you were a part of creating.

It’s Called #MyEdel

edel-myedel-1-1

In the coming weeks you are going to help design the next Edel putter – the first of its kind. The team at Edel Golf features some of the most innovative club designers in the business. They make some incredibly beautiful equipment. In my opinion it’s the most beautiful equipment in golf.

We are calling this crowdsourced design project the #MyEdel putter.

Each week you will cast your vote to help decide what head and hosel you like best, what inserts you prefer, and which custom finish combinations will ultimately be used. And really, these are just a sampling of the variables that will be settled by you as we create this limited edition MyGolfSpy putter. We will keep you updated on the progress of the putters through MyGolfSpy.com and our social media to give a you little behind the scenes look at how it all comes together.

Once your winning design is revealed, one lucky golfer will win the putter that tops the votes! Edel Golf will award the MyGolfSpy #MyEdel Putter to one lucky follower of Edel’s Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook pages; so your best chance to win is to vote and like and follow all 3. These limited edition putters will be offered in limited quantities after the voting is all done and the putter is revealed.

The workbench of David Edel has provided some of the coolest limited edition putters and wedges, and now, MyGolfSpy & Edel Golf wants to let you decide what they create next.

P.S. – The voting for the first design element begins very soon. In the mean time, be sure to follow Edel Golf on Social Media.

I myself use a Odyssey 2-ball Back-stryke and while it looks very funny ( i though it looked kinda stupid at first) it rolls beautifully for me. i like the alignment and the pushing through feel that comes from the centered back end shaft placement. My previous putter was a Golden Bear anser clone that as a little light, so the extra weight from the mallet worked great for me. I’d like to see their E-1 design with a centered shaft either in the middle or back end.

And what, may I ask, is wrong with a Bullseye putter? I have one that I still use to this day. It is the most consistent, best feeling putter I have ever had in my hands. Although I have tried other putter styles, notably the Ping Anser style and the mallet style putters, I always go back to my Bullseye. It works, and it works well.

I don’t get it. Someone has to explain this to me like I’m a 5 year old. To me it’s nothing new. And when I say that what I mean is from the beginning of golf putters have been make with all these inaccuracies built into the design. 1) the equator of the putter is below the equator of the ball. With 80% of the total weight of the putter below the equator of the ball itself there is nothing the force can do but put ‘BACKSPIN’ on the ball. So nothing has changed with this putter. They never have produced a putter yet that even had the weight 50/50 the majority is too low to do anything but backspin. That why Dave Stockton teaches the tour to be raising the putter up so it’s completely off the ground at impact. You see it every week on Tour and last year every putter manufacturer actually showed that in their own promotional videos. Go look on PGA Tour.com/best putters of 2014 and you’ll see it. 2) there is no way possible to counter balance any putter to stop side spin if the shaft is moved to an end shafted putter Vs a center shafted putter. 3) More BS marketing hype they came up with a new term for 2015 CROWDSOURCED which means absolutely nothing. It’s a beautiful putter that you still have to raise completely off the ground or manipulate in some fashion as no putter does a thing but provide force on the ball. The ground is what causes it to roll, nothing else.

Dalton – I think you are missing the point. This promotion is not about designing the best performing putter on the market, it’s simply about giving golfers a cool new product that they feel came from them.

I agree with a lot of your statements about the science behind putting, and I think you can agree that the equipment industry is getting on board with it. You see a lot of companies putting out unique designs with higher centers of gravity, grooves that reduce backspin, counterweighted grips, etc. The products out on the market are catching up to the science much faster than in years past. Imparting overspin on a putt is not a new concept, Never Compromise, Yes and Guerin Rife have been aiming to do this stuff for decades. The problem is that the most often way of doing this is to raise the COG and/or decrease loft – both causing the MOI to decrease. The average consumer doesn’t put a consistent stoke on their putts. Thus, the general golfing public needs more MOI for forgiveness in their putters (resistance to twisting) which is why you see the majority of equipment being very heavy, having a low and back COG.

If you are looking for something more innovative and engineered, and not just a custom blinged out Anser model, look past the big names in the industry and try some of the following:

This article goes way into the details and science of the putting stroke and putter, and how loft, lie, MOI, COG, etc. affect performance… http://thepowerfade.com/category/understanding-putters/

Should be fun to follow. My guess is that some kind of mallet should win. I only say that because of negative comments posted about another Anser clone. What else would you like , a souped up Bulls Eye?

The balance of Edel putters (and their other equipment) is superior. I am sure they won’t let any design overrule the balance of the club. Their “heel down” designs are interesting. The face stays almost square on the backswing and follow through. It doesn’t twist open going back and close back up coming through. It stays almost square through the stroke. They have “face balanced” and “toe down” putters as well.

I’d bet money right now, that if Edel is in this year’s Most Wanted Blade Putter contest, they will not be “superior” to other equipment. Not saying it’s a bad product (I’m sure it’s great), but one opinion doesn’t mean much on this site, esp. considering it’s all about objective performance. We’ll see. Put up or shut up, Edel… be part of the MWBP testing.

Why not? People are familiar and like that style. This should be interesting to say the least

I agree… you’re not really going to separate yourself from the pack by designing a “pimped-out” Anser putter. There are any number of custom putter shops that can do the exact same thing. Frankly, at least for me, the whole tricked-out custom club thing is getting old. I don’t care about that, I want to know about products I might actually buy one day, not glorified works of art. Sorry to act like the grumpy old man (I’m only 30!), b/c I’m sure you need stuff to write about.

The typical Edel putter or wedge doesn’t look like the fancy ones displayed on their website. Those are for show as well as being completely playable. Only relatively few people use those. Edel equipment is superior, but the bling doesn’t affect that. Most of their putters look like anybody else’s – at least at a distance and before you use them and find out how good they are. The wedges look slightly different due to the grind, but not at a distance. They also have superior playability due to their sole grind and weight distribution as well as their visual appeal due to head shape. I have 2 Edel wedges and they may having a good short game much easier. Like the putters, they are custom fitted.
