THIS is the future of golf.

THIS is the future of golf.

They over built, over sold, over charged, waited too long, weren’t accepting, under developed, lost touch, I would love to go on.

But time is wasting. Literally.

They’ve spent millions and millions of dollars (lots of that on 15-inch cups).  They’ve established organizations devoted solely to solving a singular problem.  They’ve hired some of the “smartest” people inside and outside of the industry to find the “holy grail”. They have all come up empty.

At the end of the day the industry has no one to blame but themselves.  They need to look in the mirror and get out of their own way. They have become dinosaurs and we all know how that story ends.

The answer is staring them right in the face.  And no better display of that answer than this week in Phoenix, Arizona.

It starts here.

FUN.

honestly this is the way golf has to go. I was in the same boat as a lot of you gentleman. This was until i went to a top golf facility. Let me tell you, i have never seen as many women and kids that enthusiastic about golf. I think top golf needs to expand, broaden its approach, and we may see golf on the rise again. not in the traditional sense, but growth of the game is what every enthusiast needs to have their approach to the game be, or we won’t have this game at all.

Seriously?? If given the chance to pick the Masters or US Open or ‘the’ Open would a real golfer choose the Waste Mgmt? Watching a throng of drunk adolescents scream is anti golf. Open or Masters ‘patrons’ are knowledgeable and courteous offering only encouragement and perfectly timed adoration. Phoenix is an aberration. Golf would die if it were a weekly thing.

I guess the hacker that writes for this site thinks pebble beach sucks and 100,000 wasted douchebags screaming is the future of golf. It’s fine once a year, and yes, it’s cool, but getting shit faced is not really the future of the game

Every tournament should be different, embracing the local flavor. I love the WMO, but it doesn’t work everywhere.

That said, more fun isn’t a bad thing everywhere.

Welcome to the bacchanal! As a one of a kind event, the Phoenix may have its place. I hope that it remains in it’s place. This expression of hope comes from one who loves golfing while enjoying a good beer and cigar.

I dont think that most golfers are in golf because it is “fun”. We are in it because it is great. I enjoy golf, but only because i love the feeling of a well struck shot that goes where i wanted it to (And i love improving myself at impossible things). Enjoy and fun are different. The people i play with make it fun. Maybe we need to be more fun people…

The issue is that we have a “one size fits all” mentality when it comes to golf. I think the future of golf is recognizing that there are the Ricky Fowler and Waste Management styles of golf and the Jordan Speith and Masters style. The purists and the non conformists. The golf world can handle all kinds of workable approaches. Why do we fight with each other about what we feel is the greatest format when we are all after the same thing, which is the advancement and enhancement of the game.

I’m trying to interpret the intent of this article. If it’s about tournament golf on the PGA you’d have to find different fun things that mark different tournaments. Frankly though I don’t think there is a major issue with live attendance at tournaments – I’ve been to any of number of tournaments from Majors to lesser events opposite majors and there are always plenty of people.

I’m guessing that the FUN comment has to do with golf in general. How do we make golf more fun for the general public. It’s got to be fun enough for people to part with their disposable income.

I’m all for suggestions and attempts to make the game more fun. I’ve taught two boys how to play the game and have any number of friends whom I’ve gotten into it too – we almost always have fun on the course – we might not always play the way the USGA would want us to but we have FUN.

Especially for a star studded field, this concept may eliminate the feeling of people in the gallery “how I wish I could be in two places at one time” … albeit one may need binoculars.

I think this could work for some tournaments, but obviously not all. It needs to be the proper venue and feel, Arizona, southern CA, Las Vegas, Florida, South Carolina. As for people saying the they don’t need drunks yelling at the tee box…it already happens, plus there’s always some Dipsh!t yells “get in the hold” every time Tiger tees off, and having a stadium hole is not going to change that. Venue is key and this tournament in particular has been known for the party environment.
I think the PGA need to have more fun with golf, trick shot and skill challenges…i saw a video of guys on the European Tour skeet golfing with clay pigeon targets. These men and women can do so much with a club and ball, encourage them to show it off… There’s some unbelievable young golfers on the tour now, which helps appeal to the youth, but if you can show people the fun side too, it can only help.

The thinking is that the NASCAR atmosphere makes it easier for current golfers to get non golfers to go out to the tournaments, and then get them interested in playing themselves? That watching golfers play in front of drunken bros yelling BABABOOEY! will somehow make the game more interesting to television audiences who otherwise have no interest in golf?

      Not seeing it.

I think every tournament should have one “fun” hole like 16 at Scottsdale. It’s the best of both worlds. Golf purists can go out and walk around the other 17 holes following guys just like at any other normal tournament (probably better for these people bc fewer people will be around so better views). Kids and people who want to have fun can go to the stadium.

There’s a reason the Phoenix Open consistently has the largest attendance of any golf tournament in the world…

The idea of the stands is good but all the other crap that comes with that hole is a bit over the top. Kinda get the feeling the vast majority there just go to get drunk and aren’t that bothered about the golf.
