You’ve no doubt heard the grotesquely overused expression “drive for show, putt for dough.” If you’re familiar with Mark Broadie’s paradigm-shifting Every Shot Counts, you’ve come to realize that it’s actually more accurate to say “short game for show, long irons and hybrids for dough“, but that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. The point is that, while perhaps not to the extent that the cute little nursery rhyme has mislead us to believe all these years; putting still matters.
I know…it’s an obvious point.
So within that context, when the guys at TIBA Putt sent us their Impact Zone Training Aid, which promises to improve swing path, face angle, and distance control for the inarguably affordable low price of $19.99, we figured it couldn’t hurt to take a look.
We’ve profiled several devices claiming to do basically the same thing that TIBA Putt does, but when you considering that just about all of them are $70+, (and some are over $200), $20 sounded like an absolute steal.
The Preemptive Strike
Let’s get this out of the way right now. No doubt some of you will no doubt say “$20 for that? Any idiot could make one of those.” Well, you didn’t. And for those who insist they could make the same thing for $4 (+ gas money and a trip to Home Depot), I’d say “Maybe you can,. I mean, you’re obviously a genius, but really, for a guy like you…isn’t your time worth more than $20?”
Moving on…
What Is TIBA Putt?
The TIBA Putt system (and system might be overstating it) consists of two orange pieces of plastic and four short tees. The box also contains instructions which are well laid out. As you might imagine, setup is a breeze.
Seriously people are looking at us funny on the putting green with our fancy orange plastic arcs. Sigh… Now I gotta explain what we’re doing.
Strange looks? Sure, but does it work?
The Test
Day one, we tested from 6 feet out with 2 sleeves of balls for more than an hour. At the start our tester was struggled to make 50% of putts. By the end of the first hour with Tiba Putt, the make rate had climbed to 5 of 6, with TIBA Putt configured with a substantial gap. With an inch wide gap on on either side of the ball, putting improved substantially.
A week later, we performed the exact same test with TIBA Putt configred at basically putter width. We noticed significant changes immediately.
- Our tester’s backswing was shorter and more controlled
- With the focus on squaring the face, our tester’s stroke was more aggressive with a significantly improved follow through
The Results
Yes, TIBA Putt really works. Kyle Henderson and Don Everhart, TIBA Putt’s creators are onto something here.
Work with the TIBA Putt has translated to improvement on the course as well. Subtle, likely previously unnoticed, faults have been virtually eliminated. Even without the TIBA Putt on real greens (the ones where you have to write down a score), our tester’s stroke, is solid and direct, with a putter face that’s much closer to square at impact. As the make percentage has increased, so to has our tester’s confidence level.
Final Thoughts
Given the simplicity of the device, we doubted TIBA Putt could live up to its billing, but after putting it through it’s paces, we find believing what is an admittedly simply, but highly-effective solution for several common putting flaws.
Not only is it good for beginners, but TIBA Putt’s flexible design makes it adaptable enough to help further refine more established putting strokes. TIBA Putt is one of those small and inexpensive products that could be easily overlooked, but it shouldn’t be. We think it has tremendous potential to help you improve your putting (you have to put in the time). If you struggle with putting, you could easily spend 10x as much money to achieve no better results.

I purchased this device and it arrived the other day. Note: Those whining about the $20 cost are the same ones that spend $400 on a driver expecting to get 15 yards added to their distance doing nothing different at all. You can buy a club but you can’t buy a game.
Anyway, the first time I used it I only had 15 mins to practice with it. Set it up about six feet from the hole with 1/2 inch on either side. First five minutes was horrible. I was shocked at how much my putter head was bouncing off the channel walls. The next five minutes I focused all my attention on not hitting the channel walls. Guess what happened? My stroke appeared and the last five minutes I began making putts one after another…not looking at the hole but hearing the ball go in the hole. Awesome. Listen up, if you have a problem with accuracy but your distance control is good buy it and use it because this device really works.
